I noticed that one company is listed for tours. I tried to add others and they were deleted. Obviously some people have been paid by these companies to delete other peoples listings, which is unfortunate. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) RangerTodd (talkcontribs)

Comments[edit]

  1. This needs attention: As cute as the belugas are, the flies are as demonic a plague, so bring long pants...
  2. The "big" text in "Prepare" is a bit overwhelming.
  3. What is an inukshuk for?
  4. Do they rent weight belts for scuba or must you take your own? • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 07:07, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why you underlined "the flies are as demonic a plague," as it seems fine to my eye. But I reworded it slightly [1]—does that seem more clear to you? There is no equipment rental for scuba, so I have to assume that would include weight belts. If you think that isn't obvious from the current text or could be conveyed more clearly, please go ahead and make the change, as this is not an activity I know much about. I have made the other suggested changes. --Peter Talk 16:46, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like the part about the Tundra inn having a weird smell is unnecessary. I have been there and have not observed anything of that nature. Is it possible to have that segment removed. The aurora domes are no longer connected to the Tundra Inn owners either so I would recommend removing that for accuracy.

Under Boating should Churchill Custom Tours be aded alongside Sea north. people can book beluga whale viewing, Price Wales Fort Tours and Sunset boat cruises with Churchill Custom Tours so seems like they would be a good fit to have listed. —The preceding comment was added by 184.67.169.122 (talkcontribs)

Plunge forward and edit or update anything suitably. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:27, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other activities?[edit]

Two major reasons some people go North are hunting and fishing, & the article currently mentions neither. It does have some text about wildlife spotting that actually uses the phrase "hunt down" various animals, and I think that needs rewording since it probably refers to using binoculars or a camera rather than a rifle but it could be misread.

But should something about hunting and fishing be added? Perhaps only a comment that those are not usually done from Churchill and some links to areas that are more suitable? Pashley (talk) 04:49, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did the minor rewording.
Are the bears, belugas, etc. protected species? I know the Inuit hunt caribou and seal, not sure about larger species. What about visitors? Pashley (talk) 04:58, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Inuit rarely hunt visitors, but they also don't live all that close to Churchill (they're farther north), so tourists are probably safe ;) --Peter Talk 05:06, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, OK, Churchill is neither a fishing nor hunting destination. I can't find anything on the web suggesting such activities anywhere closer than 140 miles away, and there are no businesses listed in the town that offer these activities. We could mention the potential to hunt polar bears, which is done in Nunavut for space tourism-high prices. The Canadian government allows First Nations that have traditionally hunted polar bears (and other protected/endangered species) to hunt a certain quota, but in practice the allotments are all auctioned off to wealthy foreigners (supervillains?). If you think that's worth mentioning, I could put it in Get out, but discussing the individual "tour" companies that you can contact to do this would be out per Wikivoyage:Don't tout, since they are not connected to Churchill. --Peter Talk 05:06, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think mentioning pricey bear hunting is worthwhile here. It does seem worth pointing out that, unlike some northern areas, Churchill is not a fishing or hunting base. Pashley (talk) 05:17, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Strange weather sign[edit]

weather rock Is that real? If so, should we add it to the article? No photo I can find on Commons, plenty around the web but I have not checked licensing. Pashley (talk) 19:39, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's definitely real, and I have pics of it. But the article as it is, I think, cannot hold any more photos, and there isn't one I'd be happy replacing with the rock. Maybe it should get a see entry, though ;) --Peter Talk 23:26, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greatly exaggerated fares for train[edit]

Just wanted to point out that the fare examples for the train service are high above the normal price. A return-journey in January booked though VIA-rails webpage gives CAD$ 260 for economy class and about CAD$ 550 for a bed in a cabin for two. I'm guessing there's an fare increase during the summer months but still, we should adjust the price downwards a bit. --Jonte-- (talk) 15:03, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tried the same enquiry, telling viarail.ca that I'm leaving Winterpeg on St. Jean Baptiste day, returning two days after Dominion Day. $352+tax return for one adult, economy. If you're going to change the article, please list the high-season rate instead of just something that isn't available for much of the year. K7L (talk) 17:27, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tundra Buggy[edit]

Is it a trademarked name like Jeep and Land Rover or a generic noun like snowmobile? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:54, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to be a name owned by one specific local company in Churchill. The wikipedia:Tundra Buggy fleet "is now custom built and manufactured by Frontiers North Adventures in Churchill, Manitoba", according to a WP article flagged as "This article contains content that is written like an advertisement". That makes it less generic than "Jeep", which is FiatChrysler this week but exists in many cities. K7L (talk) 23:39, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. So caps are correct. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:40, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Tundra Buggy® is a registered trademark. 184.67.169.122 19:51, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The train[edit]

Wikipedia claims the following: "

In 2018, the Port of Churchill, the rail line, and the Churchill Marine Tank Farm were purchased by Arctic Gateway Group, a private-public partnership that includes Missinippi Rail, Fairfax Financial Holdings and AGT Food and Ingredients.[30] The group engaged Cando Rail Services and Paradox Access Solutions[31] to repair the flood damage.[32] On November 1, 2018, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined Churchill residents to celebrate the return of rail service.[33][34][35] Freight shipments resumed in late November[36] and passenger service in early December 2018.[37] "
