Usable?

I think this could now be tagged as Usable but since I wrote most of it, I'm reluctant to promote it myself. Other opinions?

I think some more issues should be pointed out, mostly concerning everyday life, and pointers provided for them where appropriate. Off the top of my head:

• Housing: hotels are often expensive and not well suited for extended stay, while renting may be difficult for a foreigner and buying isn't practical for somebody who will soon be moving away. There is a short section on this in Working abroad, but having an employer (and a legal status as employed) helps. Cruising on small craft also has some related discussion (doing laundry etc.).
• Ergonomics. If you are working on your laptop, you probably don't have a proper desk and accompanying office chair. How do you avoid problems? In some places it is possible to rent office space, is that a good solution? If staying short-time in any one place, you won't have seasonal cards to gyms, you may not know the local jogging trails etc. How do you take care of fitness issues?
• We say that making real friends, and keeping acquaintances, may be a challenge. Do we have any advice?
• The wet season is approaching, and you think you had enough of this place, so you are moving on. You need to decide on a place, get the visa and a ticket. Oops, the visa need to be applied for at the embassy in your home country, on the other side of the globe, and you didn't apply when you where home for Christmas (the next visa is mentioned in the article, but perhaps could be emphasised a little). Anything else to get done in time before the move?

What about banking? Is it unproblematic to get large sums (all your spendings) withdrawn from ATMs and handle all local expenses in cash? If you open an account, do you need to explain where the money comes from, and perhaps pay local taxes? How easy is it to get a local bank account to handle your local money transfer needs? In what cases is it an advantage to handle some things, such as renting office space or local internet connections via a company of yours? –LPfi (talk) 18:41, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

Destinations

It might be good to add a section similar to Retiring_abroad#Destinations, probably with a link to that since there is considerable overlap. But what places should it list? Looking at the Reddit board, Spain & Thailand seem most discussed, but there are many others.

Should we add a table like Retiring_abroad/Table, or expand that one & link to it? For nomads, it would obviously need a column for Internet speed. Anything else? Pashley (talk) 00:09, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

There are network advantages, both regarding meeting colleagues and having facilities in place. I assume there are places with many digital nomads and businesses targeting them as an important customer segment, such as ensuring their Wi-Fi is reliable and fast enough (which a random tourist may not care that much about). Also, any difficulties in such a place would probably be fixed before long or well-known in the community. I think that a destination section should concentrate on such places, leaving out possibly magnificent but unproven places, or discussing them separately in more general terms –LPfi (talk) 11:13, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Leaving your laptop unattended

I changed the rationale for the laptop lock. If leaving the laptop when going for the toilet or for a smoke, somebody would have ample time to exchange you USB stick or mouse for one with a backdoor, or do whatever other nastiness. But I can understand that you don't want to pack down everything and carry it with you to the toilet. So what should you do, unless you have a friend who can watch your things? A cracker turning up may be improbable in most places, but if digital nomads are common in the area, it doesn't seem impossible. And as a customer, I wouldn't see it as your having taken due care if confident documents were leaked because you left your laptop unattended in a café. –LPfi (talk) 10:51, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Guide? DotM?

After the discussion at #Usable?, this was promoted. If it were guide, it would make a fine FTT.
