Rename to Merritt Island?[edit]

@SelfieCity: - would it be a good idea to rename this to Merritt Island? Considering most only colloquially call Merritt as KSC, with most ending up going and exploring the whole island. (this includes myself in 2019) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:39, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, nice to know there is a fellow visitor to the area here on wiki. We already have an article on Cape Canaveral. But though I thought the Cape Canaveral article included the space center as well, I see it has no markers for the main visitor area of the space center (which is on Merritt Island, as you clearly know). I don’t like the idea of splitting the space center across two articles, but given the way the articles have currently developed, it seems like the best way to improve article coverage for now. At what point does Kennedy Parkway close to the public and open for space center use? Just north of the visitor center perhaps? --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 10:05, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC, from KSC northwards, where only buses could go (free buses if you want to go just to the Apollo Centre, but from what I can remember, it was about $30 for the guided tour buses). Those $30 tour buses do go north of the Apollo Centre to the Wildlife refuge centre. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:50, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, I've always thought Cape Canaveral was where the space center is but after a look at maps it's not. --Ypsilon (talk) 11:29, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the same until I went there. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:50, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm doing some research, because at least in my area (which isn't far from Cape Canaveral), everyone referring to Cape Canaveral refers to the broader area, as the Canaveral National Seashore extends beyond "Cape Canaveral". Upon research it seems that they are technically two separate places, so we ought to follow suit, I guess. I only wish there was a term for the KSC/Cape Canaveral broader area so we could incorporate the two closely related articles. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 16:40, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I had created this article a year ago as I was trying to distinguish between Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. However, as I have learnt from WV:WIAA, attractions should not have articles. Therefore, I'll propose merging it to Merritt Island. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:21, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pagebanner[edit]

I've cropped a few banners but I'm unsure which one to add. Please share your thoughts below SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:09, 19 June 2021 (UTC):[reply]

Banner #1 - Just at the entry to KSC
Banner #3 - This is the real Atlantis at the Atlantis center
Banner #4 - This is just the view from the bus tour turnoff is.
I like the first banner most. --Ypsilon (talk) 11:30, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add the first banner. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:35, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal 10 October 2022[edit]

According to WV:WIAA, attractions should not have their own articles, unless they are in remote places. Therefore, I propose merging it to Merritt Island. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:29, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As someone who's visited KSC before, I'm neutral on this. For starters, most visitors have absolutely no idea where Merritt Island is cf. KSC – it is also reasonably complex so there was merit in you creating this, but at the same time, I wouldn't say it's that complex not unlike Universal Studios Florida or Walt Disney World. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:50, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel passionately either way. This one seems like a grey area. For what it's worth, I've heard of Kennedy Space Center but never heard of Merritt Island. ButteBag (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
With a merger, Kennedy Space Center would be redirected, so anyone who looks up KSC will be taken to the correct article. Ground Zero (talk) 17:40, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I vote NO to this proposal because it's not putting the traveler first. A real life traveler will want to know about interesting, famous places....like Kennedy Space Center (which should be the article title). He definitely doesn't want his view occluded by a lot of geographic gobbledygook like splitting hairs over what municipality a place lies in. It also does our collective reputation no good when we force interesting topics to live in articles with boring ass titles. Travel is fun and cool, we don't need to make it sound dull and boring. Mrkstvns (talk) 19:51, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'd tend to support a merge and redirect the other way, based on the principles of Wikivoyage:Naming conventions, because in this case, Kennedy Space Center is a much better-known name than Merritt Island. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:13, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
KSC only forms a part of Merritt Island, though. Most people only explore the rest of the island if they have a bit more time to spare. Anecdotally, my Uber driver went on a short detour to see some dolphins from the freeway bridge (I think it was FL-A1A?), but that's only because I was in no rush to get back to Orlando. I would prefer keeping both pages separately for this very reason. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 05:44, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Keeping them separate seems like a reasonable approach. Can we remove the merger proposal tag? Mrkstvns (talk) 15:35, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrkstvns: Yes Done. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 00:47, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
