Cities and Other destinations[edit]

Given that Lazio is not a bottom-level article, both of these lists should be limited to the 9 most important. For cities, the following seem obvious to me:

Rome, of course.

Anzio, because it is a famous battlefield

Tarquinia, for its great Etruscan museum and pretty Etruscan necropoli, between Tarquinia and Tarquinia Scalo

Tivoli, for the gardens at the Villa d'Este

So which 5 more should be here? For the record, here's the list at present:

I'm guessing Viterbo and Civitavecchia probably belong. But why isn't Ostia on this list? Because it's on "Other destinations" as Ostia Antica? Is that the best solution?

As for "Other destinations", there are 11 of them, and Cerveteri is actually a town, and a very important one because of its Etruscan history and necropoli, so arguably, it should either be in "Cities" or its necropoli should be given as the destination.

Here's the current "Other destinations" list:

Monte Cassino is obvious because of its history. Which two or so of these destinations are least important? Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:22, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Same question almost 5 years later. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:11, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keeping in mind that I've been to only a few of these cities, based on the descriptions in the articles, I'd definitely keep Subiaco and Viterbo and would suggest removing Sperlonga. But that reduces the list only to 11, when it needs to be reduced to 9. If we remove Latera as well, we get down to 10:
But is it correct to remove Latera, and which of these others should be removed? If I hadn't visited Tarquinia, I might suggest removing it because the article doesn't give it justice; the Etruscan necropoli and the Etruscan Museum there are well worth visiting. So which one? Gaeta? Civitavecchia? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:05, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Civitavecchia, which is a usable article, should be kept and Gaeta, an outline, removed.ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 08:42, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think we probably shouldn't do this by how good the articles are, but by how interesting and important the cities are. Would your answer remain the same? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:12, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a perfectly fine aim, but if neither of us know the towns (I certainly don't), then I still think it's best to support the better article, unless someone wants to work on Gaeta to get it up to usable.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 11:11, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A wrinkle is that the following "Other destinations" are actually cities:
Bomarzo "is a small town", although it could be listed in "Other destinations" for the Sacro Bosco (Park of the Monsters); Castelli Romani "is an area of small towns southeast of Rome", so maybe an "Other destination"; but Cerveteri is an important town that should probably be among the "Cities"; Civita di Bagnoregio "is a small Italian hill town in the province of Viterbo" and Sutri "is a city in the province of Viterbo". (All quotes from the ledes of these articles.) So we have to figure out what to do with those listings. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:39, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Make sure they're listed in the provinces, then delete from here or merge the blurbs I guess.
I have now made sure every city article listed under Other destinations is listed as a city under the relevant province, so with your agreement they can be removed from this article altogether. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:02, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! But I think Cerveteri probably should be among the list of 9 cities. I'll delete the others and adjust the link to the Park of the Monsters for Bomarzo. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:14, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Ah, okay. What do you reckon should happen to Castelli Romani? Is it important enough to be listed here, or demoted to the province? --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:19, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, but I think it can remain an "Other destination", and there are now 9 (soon to be 8) "Other destinations". The remaining issue is how to fix "Cities". I fear that because I have not hung out in seaside locations in Lazio, I am probably undervaluing them, but I'm seeing this list as a possibility for 9:
Is it disrespectful to the Allied war dead to eliminate Anzio? Otherwise, I think either Civita Castellana or Tuscania goes, Tuscania has multiple points of interest while Civita Castellana has a well-developed article with multiple restaurant listings and what looks like a beautiful Duomo. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:48, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with eliminating Anzio. It looks like Wikivoyage could do with some local knowledge round these parts. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:18, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Most definitely! Thanks for your help with this. I'll make the change, and we can always revisit this whenever someone with a wider knowledge of Lazio beyond Rome, Sermoneta, Tivoli, Tarquinia and Latina shows up. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:47, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to bring up another wrinkle, but I was looking at the provinces within Lazio, and a couple of them have no representation at all among the Cities or Other destinations, and Rieti looks like it should be on the list, bumping off something. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:00, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh fiddlesticks. You just had to double check, didn't you? ;-) On balance, it's probably better that every province have at least one city in the list for it to be representative. How about we go with the four you originally picked out as being obvious inclusions, and then make the remaining five as geographically diverse as possible ? Even if two or three of the resulting inclusions are not that special, at least the article covers the whole region.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:26, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Latina province has no destination represented, but I don't think Latina is that interesting, except for fans of Fascist architecture, so I'd tend to either put Priverno in the list or, more reasonably (IMO), make Priverno#Fossanova Abbey an "Other destination", now that there are only 8 "Other destinations". Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:31, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If putting the abbey as an Other destination would allow the ninth city to be something worthwhile, then go ahead. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 18:25, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think Tuscania goes, replaced by Rieti, and then I'll add Fossanova to "Other destinations". And then we're done until someone who knows Lazio better than we do may have other ideas. :-) And I forgot to remove Canterano from "Other destinations" before: it's a town. So Fossanova substitutes for it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:39, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
