Hotspot for African Americans?[edit]

The article now reads: Once a whaling center, it has become a vacation hotspot for African Americans (...) Is this an accurate statement? I don't know this place at all, but it seems to just be a vacation hotspot for a variety of people? JuliasTravels (talk) 16:43, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That note was added by Special:Contributions/135.19.218.111. Internet sources seem to indicate that the island is popular with visitors of many races, but I didn't find anything that indicated it was particularly notable as a destination for any particular race and would suggest removing the "hotspot for African Americans" unless someone can vouch for the fact that a disproportionate number of the island's visitors are African Americans. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:51, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
With no-one else replying, I've deleted it now. Can always be restored if someone can produce some evidence for this, but I can't find any online either. JuliasTravels (talk) 10:56, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at this article [1]. I think there is some support to the idea that the Vineyard has a history as a specifically African-American vacation spot, especially Oak Bluffs. Rks13 (talk) 05:51, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Region v City article[edit]

I'm new to wiki voyage, and I don't have a strong sense for the dividing line between region articles and city articles. Right now, this article uses the region template, but it seems to contain more details that the guide suggests it should. It also includes links to city articles, but those don't contain much information. The result looks more like a city article mis-classified as a region article with links to moribund city articles. I'm not convinced that the Vineyard is big enough to divide up into separate articles, and I think most visitors will think of themselves as going to the Vineyard, not going to one particular town. Also, I suspect that most visitors (and residents) move around between the towns on the Vineyard enough to make the distinction not particularly useful. I'm willing to do some work rearranging this collection of articles, but I don't want to invest the time if the it's just going to get reverted. Rks13 (talk) 05:48, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Six town articles for an island that is only about ten miles long does seem excessive, although a consolidated article is going to have a lot of listings in it - it looks like we would end up with perhaps 50 hotel listings if everything was combined. I think the argument that most visitors are looking for a guide to the island, rather than individual parts of the island, is a compelling one, so while feedback from others would be helpful, I personally would have no objection to consolidation. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:56, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:Rks13 about collapsing the six articles into one! Please do it if you have the knowledge! See also: Talk:Massachusetts#Massachusetts_Reorg. I get that there would be 50 hotel listings, but do we need to list every hotel? Maybe we could cut it back to just the best 20? Would that be 'bad'? I am having a hard time getting my head around Wikivoyage, what to include, exclude, split out and combine. But welcome to Open Source I guess, lol. --ButteBag (talk) 17:35, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Current banner is basically identical to Massachusetts.
