Purpose / travel focus[edit]

So a country being governed by some sort of crowned head is nice and all, but where is the benefit for visitors to know that? Just listing monarchies isn't gonna do much for that... And sometimes palaces no longer used as such are way more interesting than those where a reigning monarch still sits in... Hobbitschuster (talk) 22:26, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The type of government of a country, anyway, can be covered in each country article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:13, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is a very good opportunity to actually discern between those monarchies who have a particluar set of sites/places which related back to the empire/monarchy, against those where very few traces requie some searching (some in Jordan and Indonesia for instance are literally archaeoligical sites only)

The opportunity is where there is adequate qualifiers as to what is in the country that can either evoke or inform the visitor. St Petersburg in Russia, or Edinburgh in Scotland have excellent traces of the former Monarchies power and context for instance JarrahTree (talk) 03:21, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Many current or historical monarchies are tourist attractions in their own right. Each entry should have basic visitor information, and preferrably a link to the Head of State's official website. /Yvwv (talk) 17:22, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are actually all kinds of attractions related to monarchies; palaces, crown jewels, royal apparel, events... ϒpsilon (talk) 17:43, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[unindent] There are some nice things about this article, but I'm still wondering a little about making a system of government a WV topic. Are there plans afoot to also make articles on topics like Republic (form of government), Theocracy and Autocracy? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:40, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What about hereditary communist Republics that are not communist ? Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:55, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You get my point. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:21, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I do. Hobbitschuster (talk) 22:43, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Irrelevant tabs in listing templates[edit]

It's precedented, for example in the article about Ancient Rome, to do the exceptional thing and delete obviously irrelevant tags like "email", "phone", "tollfree", "fax", "hours" and "price", but they understandably keep getting put back in by well-meaning editors. It seems even more necessary to delete them from "listings" that consist of entire nations, don't you agree? And if Geo is given for an entire nation (or, well, realm), it shouldn't be accurate to a km or two, either, unless we're talking about a tiny principality like Monaco. Where is the 5th decimal place in the latitude of a nation? Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:04, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's likely that the listing editor would put some of those tags back if they're absent. What is the freephone number for Ancient Rome, anyway? I think 1-800 was MCCM? :) K7L (talk) 14:18, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe 1-800-SPQR? Or 1-800-Friends-Romans-Countrymen? Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:14, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anyone actively types them back again, rather they are automatically added when you click on the Listings icons above the editing window and people are too lazy to remove them. Phone= and similar parameters in a listing of a country are of course entirely useless, but as empty parameters don't show up in the article text in reading mode I don't see them being there as a huge problem. One alternative to listings are markers, but there's as far as I know no other way to add them than copying and pasting the marker skeleton.
As a side note, occasionally people have found time to remove parameters from see, do, eat etc. listings in cities that they have been unable to fill (for instance when cleaning up Stockholm's district articles there were probably hundreds of these) which IMO is just annoying. Farouk quote[edit]

w:Farouk of Egypt was that country's last reigning monarch, overthrown by Nasser et al. in 1952. His best-known quote is:

The whole world is in revolt. Soon there will be only five Kings left--the King of England, the King of Spades, The King of Clubs, the King of Hearts, and the King of Diamonds.

I'd say that quote belongs somewhere in the article. Pashley (talk) 01:26, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. /Yvwv (talk) 02:21, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be better than quoting "God Save the King", which the current text does? I'd say yes.

Order?[edit]

I don't see alphabetical order by city, so what order do we want to put the cities in?

I'd add Munich as the capital of the Bavarian kings, but until I know what order things are in, I don't want to add anything. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:38, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think they aren't in any particular order... Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:06, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What order do you think they should be in? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:56, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose/travel focus redux[edit]

I see there were misgivings about this article back in 2015, and, as of now, the article seems firmly out of our scope. The "Understand" and "Monarchies today" sections are encyclopedic with no value for travelers. The rest, the "Historical monarchies" section, is a list of sights, but a list of castles scattered around the world does nothing for readers. Is there any plan to bring this article to a useful state? ARR8 (talk | contribs) 21:17, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okinawa[edit]

Once a monarchy & at least one palace still stands, see Minority_cultures_of_Japan#Ryukyuans. Add it here? Pashley (talk) 00:26, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, on the same basis that Iolani Palace in Honolulu is listed. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:41, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
