Photos Would Be Nice

[edit]

As someone who's never been to Staten Island, some aerial photos of it would be nice--especially on a TRAVEL website. Also, a few photos of some popular Staten Island destinations AND a few photos of some "secret" destinations (like a favorite eatery, museum, park, "watering hole", theater, park, pond, etc.) would be nice for us novices. "A picture's worth a thousand words."

Sections

[edit]

Should it be broken down into North, East, West and South Shores, or North and South Shores? —The preceding comment was added by 68.174.242.217 (talkcontribs)

With the caveat that I'm a Manhattanite, I've never heard anyone talk about the east or west shores of Staten Island, but there are various neighborhoods, such as New Dorp, Tottenville, etc., etc. My feeling is, anyone who wants to should group the neighborhoods into North Shore and South Shore, but there should be only one article about Staten Island. I have the distinct impression that Staten Island is not a "huge city" by our standards. If we get to the point that we're districtifying Staten Island, I think we need to re-evaluate our guidelines! (WT-en) LtPowers 08:43, 18 July 2010 (EDT)
I agree completely. Staten Island doesn't merit more than one article. However, dividing the neighborhoods into two categories within this article is not a bad idea. (WT-en) Ikan Kekek 14:57, 18 July 2010 (EDT)

That is what I meant when I said to group it. Put what attractions are on the North Shore and South Shore. I didn't mean divide it into 20 different neighborhoods, just 2 sections that are fairly different (the North Shore is more urban) would suffice. —The preceding comment was added by 65.88.88.82 (talkcontribs)

Map

[edit]

This article needs a map so I'm going to try to make one (WT-en) –sumone10154 00:57, 31 January 2011 (EST)

Closed listing (moved from article)

[edit]
  • Paolucci's, 412 Forest Avenue (Take the S48 (Ramp B) to Sharon Avenue). As good Italian as you'll find on the North Shore.

Organizing the See section

[edit]

Staten Island is the official "Borough of Parks" so can the See section get a subsection for those? There is a ton of them (and I'm ready to add some), but jamming them all into the main See section would be pointless, not to mention worthless to a reader not interested in parks. Nick1372 (talk) 02:33, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, of course. By all means, go ahead and create the subsection and insert information within it. Thanks! Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:46, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cross Island?

[edit]

In the Get in section, the following text is found:

Buses connect at the St George Ferry Terminal going to destinations all over Staten Island. The buses can be grouped according to their service area: […] Cross Island: S50s series (S51, S52)

How is this possible? First off, there is no way that the S51 & S52 can be considered crosstown buses. The S51 travels along Bay Street and Father Cappodano Blvd, alongside the ocean, and ending in Midland Beach, halfway down the shoreline. The S52 takes a similar route, just a few blocks inland.

I would assume that the term "Cross Island" would be used to describe lines that are off the usual path, in this case to/from St. George. This would pertain to some of the routes mentioned at the bottom of the section, such as the S53, S57. However, this would also make it totally irrelevant in this section, as it is about getting in from the ferry.

Can I request that "Cross Island" be rephrased? I just have a hard time thinking of what to name it. Nick1372 (talk) 23:37, 17 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

You can request, but I think you're more likely to do this well than anyone else. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you actually live on Staten Island, whereas I'm a Manhattanite and haven't actually been to Staten Island in several years. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:58, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I must have phrased that wrong; I didn't request it in the way of asking someone else to do it, just if it was OK. I am perfectly happy to do it, I'm just at a loss as to what to name it. Is "East Shore' a good name?
BTW, you were right about me being a Staten Islander (and proud of it!). Nick1372 (talk) 21:43, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know about "East Shore." How would you describe where those lines go, if someone asked you? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:53, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
If they were a Staten Islander, I would tell them they were "Below Hylan" (as in Hylan Blvd). However, that wouldn't be remotely helpful to a traveler, as what we refer to as "below Hylan" isn't even south of the street! That specific area doesn't have a name, so to a traveler, I would either call it the South Beach area (per its biggest neighborhood) or as part of the wider East Shore. Nick1372 (talk) 23:02, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Anyone else have anything to add? If not, I'm going to go ahead and replace it with "East Shore". Nick1372 (talk) 20:56, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Changes I want to discuss

[edit]

A few months ago, I started to revamp this page, and I did a lot of work on it. I left for a while, and came back with fresh eyes. There are a few issues I want to discuss.

  1. Is there a reason this doesn't have an Understand section? It needs one.
  2. Can we move that bus info to the Get Around section? It shouldn't really be in the ferry part of the Get In section.
  3. The Eat section is not very well done (pun totally not intended). When I organized the mess it used to be in May, User:Ikan Kekek informed me on my talk page that my organization was not the standard style of Wikivoyage. I presented a compromise, he didn't like it, and I wasn't too satisfied with it either. So, I though about it, and I was wondering: why do we have those other cuisines in the first place? No one comes to Staten Island for the Mexican food. My new proposal is this: We get rid most of the international cuisines, move the Cargo Cafe to drink, as it has a bar, and then sort the Italian listings into price ranges. We might keep the Sri Lankan listings, becuase that's a rarity in the United States, but there's something wrong with them (one references being next to the other but the addresses are totally different).
  4. The lead is horrible. We should not have a lead paragraph in which the first incentive for coming to Staten Island is to stay in a hotel & visit other places. However, that can wait until the rest of the article is in shape.

What does everyone else think? Thanks, Nick1372 (talk) 00:27, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's been a few days without replies, so I'm going to start doing a few of these things, but I still want all of your opinions on the eat section dilemma. Nick1372 (talk) 23:04, 27 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't have any great ideas for the eat section (will have to think about that some), but I agree with you completely on the lead: I'd suggest kicking that line down to the top of the Sleep section, and overwriting the ridiculous assertion that "SI has three hotels". Just because we don't have the other few dozen listed doesn't mean they don't exist!
For the express bus info, I'd like to chop it down seriously and just reference that express buses from Manhattan do exist, here's the fare, here's a link to the MTA page with the schedules. There are too many of them, and our beloved MTA changes the routes and schedules so capriciously, that listing individual routes and times will go out of date very soon if it isn't already.
I've found Understand sections are surprisingly hard to write. Probably the reason no one else has stepped up yet. -- D. Guillaume (talk) 02:49, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, Nick, I didn't see this until now. I think that it's fine to list any good restaurant including a Mexican one, because though few would go to Staten Island specifically to eat Mexican food, you might want to have some while you're there. I know that doesn't really address any central issues; I'll try to get to those a bit later. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:56, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the express bus section needs chopping down; in fact I think the whole section needs cleaning up. I'll start doing that right now. Nick1372 (talk) 19:23, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've rewritten the lead—what does everyone think? Nick1372 (talk) 04:17, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I edited it. I also think Staten Island was several villages, never one rural town. Am I wrong? Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:32, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think you're right. I'll change the wording a little. Nick1372 (talk) 14:02, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I added an Understand section with some general info and an Orientation section. I'll add a history section too, but I want to double-check some facts.

Now that there's an Understand section, do you think this article qualifies for guide status? Nick1372 (talk) 00:46, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think it's been a Guide for a while, hasn't it? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:33, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Big facepalm there. I have no clue how I missed that… Nick1372 (talk) 20:04, 9 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Update?

[edit]

User:Nick1372, are you still reading this site? Would you like to update the article to prepare for an Off the beaten path nomination? Or would anyone else like to update? I'd enjoy seeing the "forgotten borough" featured on the front page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:47, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Geo coordinates

[edit]

Unfortunately very few of the things listed here have geo coordinates. I think we should add them... Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:08, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Mapshape

[edit]

Does anyone know why it is shading in the island but not the waters around it? A look on OSM shows that there is nothing wrong, so it seems to be something on our side. Does anyone know how to fix it? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 00:27, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
