Announcements and initiatives

@SelfieCity: if we're going to have announcements and initiatives, are we going to have a separate page for that (such as Draft:Nigeria café/Announcements and Draft:Nigeria café/Initiatives?). SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:43, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sure, that's good with me. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Getting the ball rolling

I posted a question I had been asked, and my answer, as a way of showing how the cafe works. Ground Zero (talk) 16:52, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Advice based on our experience so far?

The Nigerian contributors have added a fantastic amount of content, much more than I could have imagined! That's the thing that's of paramount importance, and all concerned deserve to be very highly praised for that!

Of much less importance are the issues that have cropped up, but those can be summarized with relevant links to policy/guidelines pages. I'm thinking of things like not including the name of the city, state, country, etc. in address tabs; not deleting empty tabs; using normal spacing (none before a comma or period, one after both) and capitalization; a recommendation to use the quick versions of relevant templates (usually Wikivoyage:Quick small city article template but sometimes Wikivoyage:Quick park article template) when starting articles; not starting articles about non-huge airports, bus stations or individual attractions that aren't destinations in themselves (large non-urban parks are), though this has died down lately. I'm sure we could think of a few others. Where is the best place to post this advice on best practices, with relevant links? I feel like I could be of much more use doing this than trying to answer questions over Zoom in real time. The documentation is almost all on this site already, but maybe it needs to be made more focused and digestible. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:24, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

The main page is probably where it should be posted. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:47, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: Yes Done - there's now a page explaining where things should go. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 09:07, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Which main page? There are some other things that have been issues, such as the long lists of villages without sufficient information to be of use to visitors. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:13, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
The main page is just here. Also, which articles have the long lists. Just want to know. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 00:53, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
The long lists may have all been moved to the talk pages of the articles in question by now, but such lists of villages or neighborhoods without any or much further information or context have been a recurring issue. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:03, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've posted a thread on Wikivoyage:Nigeria café. Hopefully it attracts attention. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 04:15, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
A minor point I have observed among the Eat listings is that they only talk about whether the restaurant has dine-in, takeaway or delivery options. They don't talk about what kind of cuisine or food is served. Gizza (roam) 05:05, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Very true. ps, is this page meant to be a behind the scenes page? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 05:31, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I thought it was only some users, but it apparently is uhm... most of them. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 05:37, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Another recurring issue is encyclopedic information like the exact number of square kilometers or meters in a city or lake, its exact elevation from sea level, its exact population in a given census, and apparent copypasta, sometimes including out-of-context and therefore obscure citations. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:40, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
They don't seem to be attributing the authors in their edit summaries. Some of them however, do put {{Wikipedia}} on the relevant talk page though. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:45, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I know of at least one example: Look for "(Omin, 1983)" in this edit. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:16, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tutorials?

@Ikan Kekek: Would having a page giving new users on how to start or edit help? Your post on Wikivoyage:Nigeria café#Starting a new page would not only just help the new Nigerian users, but also help all newcomers. And I reckon we could transform that into a page on the Wikivoyage space. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:51, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

We already have those, but I think we could make them clearer, step-by-step "how-to"s in some instances. I think it's a worthy project. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:54, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh yes, I forgot about those. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:57, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
