This article is completely orphaned. I believe that the Torres Strait islands are administered by a special body, but are geographically part of Queensland? I will breadcrumb as that. If anyone disagrees, please discuss here.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:26, 12 May 2010 (EDT)

Region?

[edit]

Is this article a region? It may be an extraregion since it goes into PNG as well, but sure, I think it should be a rural area. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:37, 20 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rural areas are often used for bottom-level regions but since a few of the islands already have their own articles and classified as "cities", it won't make sense to make TSI a rural area. It may need to be renamed to Torres Strait Islands (Australia) though, because as you say, a few islands belong to PNG which are not covered here. Something like Patagonia, Patagonia (Argentina) and Patagonia (Chile). Gizza (roam) 05:10, 20 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
We could include the PNG section here as well, since that is not enough alone to warrant its own article, but in my personal opinion, the {{IsPartOf}} should be part of just Queensland, and not the Far North since that only goes as far as Nanum or Trunding or at best, Jardine River NP. If we also just make it as Queensland it makes more sense as well since the islands of PNG wouldn't be hanging on an Australian local region, but rather a state. Language "still spoken", British "scrutiny"

[edit]

From the article:

Unlike their southern neighbours though, their language is still spoken today.

Which neighbours are those? There are Australian Aboriginal languages that are still spoken.

Also, while I'm at it, is "scrutiny" the right word in this sentence?

In fact, they are more ethnically Melanesian than their southern neighbours, although they have been put under the same scrutiny by British colonialism.

Is the intended meaning of the sentence that they were also oppressed by the British? I don't think "have been put" is the right tense, either, as British colonisation of the islands is a thing of the past.

Map?

[edit]

A map showing the constituent islands would be very helpful. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:07, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
