Welcome
[edit]
Hello Rubbish computer! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.
If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:
- NPOV → be fair (not quite the same thing!)
- be bold → plunge forward
- Village pump → travellers' pub
- External links → We do not use a separate external links section, but incorporate primary links only into the text itself.
- sandbox → graffiti wall
- stub notes → Article status notes
It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!
Thanks for your edits across the site - much appreciated! -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:55, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Redirects in non-latin scripts
[edit]Hi, we had a pretty deep discussion last year regarding redirects in non-latin scripts, and we reached consensus against it.
So could you not create redirect such as אַשְׁקְלוֹן ?
Please let me know if you want me to find the reference to this consensus.
Thanks!--Andrewssi2 (talk) 00:24, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Andrewssi2: Sorry, I will bear this is in mind in the future. Thanks for letting me know. --Rubbish computer (talk) 00:26, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- See Wikivoyage_talk:Deletion_policy#Non-latin_scripts_in_article_names for the discussion. Pashley (talk) 00:38, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Redirects
[edit]Hello and welcome!
I think it's great that you've hit the ground running and are editing so actively! However, I question some of the redirects you're creating. Do you really think Corsicana, for example, is such a popular search term that it's likely for people to use Corsicana (United States) and Corsicana (Texas) as search terms, especially considering that when you type in the search window, auto-completions are offered?
- @Ikan Kekek: Good point, I'll restrict redirects like these to popular targets. --Rubbish computer (talk) 01:08, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Popular targets, and I'd say also likely search terms. I don't think, for example, that New York (New York) is a likely search term, though I could see an argument for New York, NY redirecting to Manhattan (and also problems with such a redirect). Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:10, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Ikan Kekek: Good point. --Rubbish computer (talk) 01:11, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- If I may, Corsicana (Texas) is a good redirect, because anyone who doesn't know whether or not Corsicana is a disambiguation page will likely try the former. The auto-complete on the search bar doesn't assist users writing wikicode. Powers (talk) 14:57, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- OK, I don't know what you mean about wikicode, so perhaps you can instruct us a bit. If I put [[Corsicana]] with the brackets into the "Search" window, I get search results, the first of which is in fact the Corsicana article. What is the situation you are referring to? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:01, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- I mean while writing an article, if someone wants to link to Corsicana, they're likely to use (Texas) because they don't know if Corsicana is the right page to link to. Powers (talk) 15:17, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'm thinking we don't usually want people linking to redirects like that. I guess you disagree, and maybe when you explain why, I'll be convinced. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:20, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- It's not that I think they're preferable (so I can't give a reason why); it's that I don't see any reason to avoid them. Powers (talk) 02:14, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- I would edit that kind of link if I saw it in an article and had the time and inclination. Anyway, thanks for explaining why these kinds of redirects are not such a problem. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:47, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

I like your Wikipedia user page
[edit]- pity the link does not really generate random insults... BushelCandle (talk) 16:56, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
- @BushelCandle: The link is at here rather than at Shakespeare Insult Generator. --Rubbish computer (talk) 00:22, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
