User talk:Texugo/Archives 2009-2010
Texugo - hi there.
I made the events additions - I am cool with your edit, but just let me explain my thinking.
1. I know that the Vorst site was not English, but it does mention in the rules that the links don't have to be always in English - of course anyone can figure out the bands on offer without knowing French or Flemish. Anyhow - I am sure you know the rules better than I.
2. The lastfm site - I know its not Brussels specific - but it is very useful for cataloging the lots and lots of small gigs which might be of interest to visitors.
Your other comment about slicing the section - well I do think that its useful for visitors to be able to see whats on in a city - and thats not always very easy to find in Brussels (IMHO) the official visitors site is just plain awful - I have been living here for ten years.
Anyway - I concede to your greater knowledge - but just to explain.
Regards Mark

Talk archive
[edit]Hey Brian, did something go awry in your talk page archiving?
- Yep. Every time I try to copy it and paste it in the target page, Wikivoyage says "f*** you" and it doesn't work, and my attempt doesn't even show in recent changes. Do you have any idea how to fix that? (WT-en) Texugo 15:48, 6 February 2009 (EST)
- Yeah, I have no idea why that was happening, but it was for me too. To get around it, I moved your talk page to the target, copy-pasted the content back here, then reverted the target page to the pre-archive version. Unfortunately that nuked the page history for your current talk page, but it got the job done. Weird problem. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:42, 6 February 2009 (EST)
Dindigul page
[edit]I uploaded the .svg and .png map in the wikivoyage shared page. The name is " drawing-with-usilampatti-batlagundu-smallhighway.png " But the map is not displayed in the wikivoyage page. Please advise how the map can be displayed. (WT-en) Kbala1055 09:59, 15 February 2009 (EST)
- Image tags are case-sensitive. Correcting it to the exact image name fixed it. Do you think you could crop the bottom of the map a little better? Lots of blank space there. (WT-en) Texugo 00:01, 22 February 2009 (EST)

EE
[edit]Sorry for reverting you, but unless people feel strongly to the contrary can we just leave the current EE user page as-is? Policy is that people can do pretty much whatever they like with their user pages, and it would be nice not to provoke him further by having him return daily to un-blank it. There are a number of user pages that are disparaging against others and we've let them be (User:(WT-en) Jo is the first that comes to mind) and if in this case it gives him some closure to feel like he fired the final salvo I think it's best to let him have his say and be done with it. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:02, 12 March 2009 (EDT)

Districting Southcentral Alaska
[edit]Hi Texugo - This is the first contribution I've ever made to a Wiki and don't know much about it. I just spent 6 hours on figuring out what I should and shouldn't do and writing the material. I believe I had all the formatting right and as far as changing the system--there wasn't really much of a change. The Kenai Peninsula IS a Borough.
But would appreciate any help you can give me on this, so I can do it correctly. Thanks.
Carol - (WT-en) AlaskanAtHeart 11:30, 20 August 2009 (EDT)
Hi - Thanks for your quick answer.
Actually, all of Alaska has been divided into boroughs politically for quite a few years. I can add a complete list of all the boroughs that will cover the whole state. And factually, I can't think of any other breakdown of the State by region, because there really isn't any. The boroughs actually do identify areas as well as any system that could be devised. For instance, there is a North Slope Borough--that effectively covers an area that has a unity to it. Also, there are a number of cities, such as Anchorage, that are also Boroughs. The Municipality of Anchorage is actually a much larger area than the city itself and was originally called the Greater Anchorage Area Borough. It is still a Borough even though the name has changed, so it needs to be listed as a Borough as well as a City.
If anyone else comes up with a better system, I'll be happy to go with it if it seems reasonable. But the borough is the only type of subdivision I can think of that would effectively divide the Regions that have already been set up.
And just a note on Southcentral Alaska - it is much more than just Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. It most definitely includes the Mat-Su Borough.
I'll await to hear any future comments on this system.
Thanks, (WT-en) AlaskanAtHeart 12:05, 20 August 2009 (EDT)
As far as I can tell, the regions probably do, but it's impossible to tell with that map. It is much too small and there aren't many landmarks, like towns or rivers. And each borough is quite large - the Mat-Su Borough alone has over 25,000 sq miles of territory.
I would assume that whoever divided it into regions, would have used a system that followed the borders of the existing boroughs, otherwise the division lines wouldn't make any sense. There really is not much out there in remote Alaska, so there are not a whole lot of factors to consider. There are Native villages, a few other settlements and leftovers from early Alaskan years. And the Boroughs were set up with a cultural factor in mind for the Alaskan Native groups, as well as the few developed areas like Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

Awaji
[edit]Can I ask why you removed this from Awaji? (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:58, 22 August 2009 (EDT)
- I thought it didn't really follow from the previous sentence unless you happen to know that "awa" means "foam" and infer that the name of the former prefecture may be in reference to the afore-mentioned whirlpools. I wouldn't mind putting that info about the former prefecture in there though, just didn't make sense to me to put it right there. (WT-en) Texugo 04:39, 22 August 2009 (EDT)
Trobriand Islands
[edit]Why do we need sub-headings when there is no information? Apart from anything else there is now a Table of Non-Contents rather than contents. Is this Wikivoyage policy to have all these headings?
In the Trobriands you eat and drink where you stay, so not much point in duplicate listings.(WT-en) Shep 15:02, 29 August 2009 (EDT)
- In a regional article such as this, those sections are for general descriptions. In the Eat section (a mandatory section), what are the local specialties? prices? Are all the local restaurants in hotels? Are there snack vendors on the beaches, etc. Are there local fruits to try? For the See section (also mandatory), what are the sights to see? any rock formations? temples? something else? In the Do section (not mandatory if there is nothing to do there), surely there are at least some scuba/snorkeling/swimming type options? The Drink section is not mandatory either, but if there are any special beverages popular there they should go here, or just describe generally where to get a drink (bars? beach kiosks?).(WT-en) Texugo 00:45, 30 August 2009 (EDT)

Country "See", Country "Do"
[edit]I had originally added the "See" and "Do" section to Iran, but deleted it after noticing that it was not on the articles for Japan, South Korea, or Ghana. Is it really supposed to be on the country page, or did I just happen to choose every wrong page as my reference points? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:31, 1 September 2009 (EDT)
- Hmm.. Perhaps I was a little hasty-- Upon checking a few other countries, I see that several others have no See section, no Do section or neither one, while some others have both. Wikivoyage:Article templates states that the See section is "obligatory for every article", but actually it is not currently part of the template itself. There is also an unfinished discussion which seems to mostly support adding them back in. I think we should renew the discussion there. (WT-en) Texugo 22:51, 1 September 2009 (EDT)

Lake Bolsena vfd
[edit]Hi,
You have added a vfd to this page but I can't find any explanation as to why. Before I start to argue on the vfd page please let me know why. It is an interesting area but the cities themselves do not really rate individual entries. I did the same for Lake Bracciano. The idea came from the fact that there is an (incomplete) page on Lake Trasimeno which was there long before I got involved with Wikipedia, so I was just following precedent.(WT-en) Shep 01:53, 27 September 2009 (EDT)
Bali map
[edit]Thanks for the kind words. The simple regional map of Bali which I prepared was a bit of unsophisticated bodge job I am afraid. I took a public domain outline of the island and then labelled and coloured it in Photoshop to match the regional table template. I have been looking at the standard Wikivoyage map project and will definitely get to grips with it at some stage. Peter has also indicated he would like to prepare a Wikivoyage style map for Bali, here. If one of you could, then the article would be improved enormously. The Bali project is getting there. Been a bit of slog but the six regional and 29 destination articles are now all in pretty good shape. Still some style clean up of old articles to do, but I am really happy with the progress so far.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:06, 27 September 2009 (EDT)
United States
[edit]Hi, Texugo. What problem are you trying to fix? (WT-en) LtPowers 16:18, 18 October 2009 (EDT)
- I was trying to fix the page worth of white space directly under the map caused by the fact that the Mid-Atlantic region started just before the map ended, and so kept its narrow column width even though there was nothing beside it. (WT-en) Texugo 22:59, 18 October 2009 (EDT)
- Unfortunately, the nature of HTML makes it impossible to predict where anything like that is going to end up. It all depends on your browser width, font size, and other details. For example, for me, the map goes all the way down to the Midwest section. I don't think we can afford to put in extra line breaks for everyone who has a layout problem. (WT-en) LtPowers 11:03, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
- No problem, feel free to pull it. I was just messing around with it mostly. I still wish we could get things to auto-wrap properly. (WT-en) Texugo 20:15, 19 October 2009 (EDT)

[edit]Hi Texugo. Thanks very much for helping. I am sorry that my style was a little out of the standard. I am just trying to do my best in view of a big international event that will take place in Pedro Gonzalez. It is important that we provide full information to the guests (including how to change currency and where on the web to check the current rate), i would say vitally important. Sometimes i put some stubs that we will fill with information together with my friends who are now there. Please have a little patience with us. Thanks Moonwalker

Thank for the intro / Hamamatsu Article
[edit]Thank you for the introduction.
Upon checking your user page I see you live in Hamamatsu, and after doing a look through the history of the Hamamatsu article it would appear you wrote most of it. Knowing that, I have something I feel I should share with you.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say that Hamamatsu is one of my favorite places in all of Japan and the excellence of the Wikivoyage article is partially why!
Let me explain: When my wife and I were in our first year here and still fairly new to living (and traveling) in Japan, we wanted to take a trip but were still noobs as far as traveling Japan and reading Japanese went. There's lots of info on the major destinations (Tokyo, Kyoto, Himeji, etc...) but we wanted to branch out as well and there wasn't much good info available.
We decided to go to Tokyo for Golden Week 2007 but wanted to spend a night or two somewhere between Nagoya and Tokyo on the way there. "Where should we stop?" This led me to the Wikivoyage site and I looked up a bunch of places between Tok and Nag. We decided on Hamamatsu because of all the major cities on the way, Hamamatsu not only had the best/fullest article, but said article made it clear how much good stuff there is in that city!
Of the many items listed in the Hamamatsu article of particular interest to us were the beer hall Mein Schloss (we lived in Germany for awhile, missed it), the unagi, and the Filipino restaurants. However, during our two days there we ended up biking around the lake and found so many things we loved about the city that we've gone back at least 8 or 10 times in four years or so. The best part is that almost every time we go we find some new treasure in that city.
Of course Tokyo and Osaka are the technically the top places in Japan with the most to do, but I'd say if we could choose any one place in Japan to live for a few years it'd be Hamamatsu. It's one of the unsung jewels of Japan, in our opinion, and we've only grown to agree with this idea more and more with each trip there.
Anyways, thanks for writing/contributing to that awesome article - otherwise we may never have went! It also led me to use WikiTravel in planning Japan-related travel a number of times since.

Chile
[edit]How up to speed are you on Chile? I ask mainly because of the out of control lists of cities and ODs. These actually caused me to stop on the map, which has been sitting there incomplete for months. If you have any knowledge at all of the country, it would be great to see those lists cut to 7+2. Would love to get that map finished properly. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:47, 2 April 2010 (EDT)

Kochi (Kerala)#Eat
[edit]Hello there. I have many issues with this article (most notably spending loads of time putting the articles into English and then finding gibberish reinstated when I next log in!). However, I thought that the Eat section was now OK (I spent ages redoing it). What's your beef with that section? I think the three main price categories broken into different styles of food works quite well, and is especially important in India due to dietary cultural restrictions. If there is a better way to organise this section, please do go ahead!--(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:45, 6 April 2010 (EDT)
- I didn't realize it was you who had removed the style tag. Anyway, I think it is already too fragmented, and in such a way that it invites even more sections-- if someone finds restaurants from other ethnicities they will logically create new sections for those, leaving us with a Pizza section, an American section, an Italian section, and so on. I'd rather keep the cuisine type descriptors in the descriptions, especially since none of the economic dividers is especially overwhelmed anyway. And while dietary restriction may typically be a big deal for the natives, dietary restrictions are far less common for the vast majority of English-speaking travellers, and for those with dietary restrictions, I imagine India is already one of the easier countries to deal with.(WT-en) Texugo 03:09, 6 April 2010 (EDT)
USA revert: Cities section
[edit]My intentions are not to edit war with you, but I found absolutely no reason for you to revert my work in the USA Cities section. I think it put it in better structure and if was a little lengthlier...so what? It's not like it was a novel or anything. The lengthliness I think was a benefit because it could help travelers understand more about these places (especially considering some really didn't say much of anything, like the San Francisco one I don't even think mentioned a single thing actually in San Francisco) briefly. It wasn't even that long anyways, it just gives travelers a little bit better of a look. It isn't as lengthly as the one I worked on for Canada, and nobody seemed to have a problem with that (it was already longer originally)! So why the United States one? Thanks. If you would prefer, I could try to put some of my ideas into the original mold if simply lists for the most part. You'll probably revert it back anyways, so I probably would. So what was wrong with it? (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 22:30, 16 April 2010 (EDT).
- I saw those as well and thought the revert was appropriate. The Wikivoyage convention is that these descriptions should be pithy one liners. That is of course not always the case, but it should be.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:42, 16 April 2010 (EDT)
- See Project:One-liner listings. Now that I see it, the Canada edit was also dubious; extensive details belong in, and are already in, city-specific articles. -- (WT-en) D. Guillaime 22:45, 16 April 2010 (EDT)
- Okay, but I think the US ones could use some touch ups, so I won't delve into as much detail, but will fix up a tad. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 22:48, 16 April 2010 (EDT).
- Although no description is set, the only U.S. city description that I think needs to be rethought completely is Miami. When we say "strivers from Latin America and the Caribbean" are we saying that Miami is famous for illegals and refugees? That's an odd thing to mention in a travel description. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:56, 16 April 2010 (EDT)
- San Francisco and Seattle were the ones I was thinking of. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:06, 16 April 2010 (EDT).

Hello.
[edit]Texugo, mentioning Gainesville's (common) stores and resturants IS important to the article because it is relevant to the structure of Gainesville. Other towns may have these stores, but I rarely see a town that has been planned as well as Gainesville. Having a historic train depot (and "Depot Days" festival) the city is designed around the railroads, while other towns are designed away from them. I am impressed with this and those very reasons sound like tourist attractions. I want to write a general summary at least, because otherwise articles that can't have much in them seem very useless!!

Peruvian es userspace spam
[edit]Unfortunately, there isn't any real way to stop page creation or user registration by blocks if done by a new ip. If you block the registered user, however, you have the option to prevent all edits from that user's ip & account creation, which should stop new registrations from that exact ip. Other than that, I think we're stuck patrolling the newuser log from time to time. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:31, 2 July 2010 (EDT)
BR-010.jpg
[edit]Hi, Texugo. Saw you uploaded Image:BR-010.jpg, but the quality is really bad. A PNG generated from commons:File:Br-010 Rodovia Highway Signs.svg would look a lot better within an article. (WT-en) LtPowers 13:04, 5 September 2010 (EDT)
- Yeah, I noticed that after the fact, but my Inkscape isn't working at the moment. (WT-en) Texugo 17:52, 5 September 2010 (EDT)
- Oh, but Mediawiki generates PNGs on the fly. It doesn't work here on Wikivoyage, but it works fine on Commons. Like so. (WT-en) LtPowers 21:09, 5 September 2010 (EDT)
Listings translation
[edit]Whew, it's been a while since I dealt with those, so I don't remember too well. I do know that if your plan is to change the way the tags ("see name", 'phone=""', etc.) as they appear in the raw wiki markup, then you are out of luck. If you take a look at ru:special:Allmessages and start looking at "MediaWiki:Listing-", you'll see host of tags that I translated, but I'm no longer sure why I did that, or if it was ultimately to any purpose—I think that was me trying to get it to work and not succeeding. The listings form editor can be translated, though, but that will require work on IB's part. Moreover, there seems to be some problems with the form editor in other languages right now—at least in other alphabets. So we're a little stuck!
Which language versions are you thinking about? Copying the raw wiki markup for listings from MediaWiki:Edittools to them would be a good first step. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:57, 6 September 2010 (EDT)
- I'm looking at the Portuguese version now. I copied the Edit tools over now, and I found the tags you translated on ru: -- It appears that that is where you a) found out you can't translate the raw markup tags (I tried it too) and b) succeeded in translating the form editor labels (without IB's help). So now the form editor appears in Portuguese fine, but you can only get to it by clicking the small edit button at the end of a listing already in template format-- there is no section button for "add a listing". So two more question, if you don't mind: 1) How do I enable the "Add a listing" feature, and 2) Is the fact that the raw tags cannot be translated due to laziness or refusal on IB's part, or have we even tried talking to them about it? (WT-en) Texugo 22:23, 6 September 2010 (EDT)
- I'm actually not sure about how to enable "add a listing"—I suppose that either means you'll need to ask (WT-en) someone more knowledgeable than me, or that IB will need to do it. I haven't asked IB to change the raw tags for other versions, and I think the concern there would be interoperability if we are doing things sitewide, but didn't have standardized tags. That's actually one of the reasons why I pushed hard to get the form editor up and running—if a contributor can't understand the listings tags (either for language difficulties, or simply not processing what all that wiki markup means), then they can just use the form editor. Of course, this all assumes that the form editor actually works... --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:00, 7 September 2010 (EDT)

Editing the Hoi An (Vietnam) page
[edit]Hi Texugo,
We intend to add some contributions to Wikivoyage Hoi An page. It seems that you are the admin for this page.
We are Hoi An local and our new launched tourism website has some interesting sections which are not posted in Wikivoyage Hoi An page.
Can we add in those sections or you can recommend some sections we should edit?
Best, HATourism
Información
[edit]Hola Texugo
administrator vote
[edit]I think you might have made a mistake when you voted on the Project:Administrator nominations page - you wrote "delete", which isn't one of the two options when voting for potential administrators... :) (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 00:55, 11 December 2010 (EST)
- Oh geez, how ridiculous of me! You're absolutely right! Corrected now. (WT-en) Texugo 09:51, 11 December 2010 (EST)
Hi Texugo, you just reverted an edit I did on Kochi (Kerala). I assume you had your reasons but they are escaping me. I was having some problems editing (15min+ to view, preview or edit a page) and so I just gave up, left the page and went out to the beach for a while. The edit by 195.229.235.43 had replaced a listing for Hotel Dwaraka with one for S31 without explanation. I assumed they did not know how to do a new listing and so just 'over-wrote' that of someone else. Further to the listing re-instatement I re-ordered the listings concerned by alphabet order.
I had also reworked some slight touting out of the listings and corrected some expression issues (such as remains/remain).
I do not think the listings for Tandoor and Somewhere else had any role in my edit and so your re-instatement of those listings was not part of a 'revert' of my edit, did you think that I had deleted them? My 'edit' only dealt with the reinstatement of Hotel Dwaraka and a slight tidy up of S31.
I assume Tandoor and Somewhere else are 'legitimate' IGF listings that you felt should be re-instated.
As for Conucopia I am a bit confused, their listing also states they are inside Bat and Ball, as did the (new) S31 listing that you deleted. Is there a conflict between the two that I have not been aware of? I left the S31 listing in there with a slight edit as a gesture of good faith even though the IP editor 195.229.235.43]] deleted another listing. I hoped they may have just been 'stupid' rather than 'malicious' in deleting the Hotel Dwaraka listing. As they left no edit note giving a reason for removing Hotel Dwaraka I restored that listing.
I could not do anything with my recent edit and subsequent check on the article due to the prevailing connectivity issues with WT. Now that you have done this revert I remain concerned about the content. However I do not want to edit the article listings further until I know what is going on here. Do you know something about this edit sequence that I have missed??
Subsequent to your 'revert' of my edit the Tandoor listing is now back to being vaguely 'touty' ie (The best and most tasty North Indian, particularly Punjabi, food. The Kadai chicken and ginger chicken is truly world class, and no other place in Kochi can offer than (sic) unique taste) and you have reverted the Hotel Dwaraka listing to read "and it remain (sic) a most popular option", rather than remains.
You have also removed the listings for 24 Carat, Spice Route and Lokah World Cuisine. I know you are an editor of good repute so you must have had your reasons, but what are those reasons, you have left an air of mystery by not providing an edit not other than that you have reverted my edit. I note you last edited this article on 16 dec performing an appropriate revert of "'Reliance NetConnect Braodband+ call 9349040010" but that edit gives no prompts as to your recent action and I see no other apparent prior activity on this article that provides any clue as to your reasons. Please let me know what is up here...
BTY, in regard to my edit 'lag' times, are you having any similar issues in the last few of days, sometimes a page takes 15mins plus for a single page resolve and sometimes many attempts. A few of us discussed this issue at WT Pub a while back. Maybe it is a mirror server problem, very frustrating at my end. Please let me know if you are having a similar experience. thanks. (WT-en) felix 07:18, 19 December 2010 (EST)
- Hi Felix. I believe I had that open in a tab and failed to see your last edit in which you explained what you were doing. I reverted it back to your last version, so I'll leave that to you. My lag time on opening a page seems to be around 10-15 seconds today, not the worst I've seen, but not the best either... (WT-en) Texugo 08:38, 19 December 2010 (EST)
- 10-15 secs sounds about X60 times faster than what is happening here. Glad to hear it is not a universal problem. I think maybe the mirror server explanation is the most plausible.
- So it sounds like it was just a muddle up with the edits. Those Indian articles can be both frustrating and time consuming and I was concerned that maybe I had missed something regarding the legitimacy of some of the listings. After I wrote the above I did notice an earlier exchange you had with Burmesedays on issues in that articles Eat section so it seems you are likely well acquainted with the prevailing issues there. As with some other articles in the region things seem to turn into a bit of a linguistic and content free-for-all at times. Please look over my further edit and if you think there is anything that needs a further adjustment then just go ahead. (WT-en) felix-
