Low German phrasebook says "Most people living in northern Germany [...] use it as a second language", so I suppose you could get along quite well, if you understand it well and generally know how to understand dialects of languages you know. The different dialects are not necessarily that close one to another; the phrasebooks says "Eastern dialects are often harder to understand, and they often contain more High German words or general influence" and Dutch Low Saxon phrasebook says: "Dutch Low Saxon is highly likely to be mutually intelligible with Low German; however, as each language is influenced by Dutch and High German, respectively, some misunderstandings are possible". Cities probably have many people from other regions, who don't speak Low Saxon at all.

I don't know any of those dialects and haven't lived in the region, so take this answer with a big grain of salt.

How to differenciate attempts to impress using a language vs genuine efforts to learn a language.

People often say sentances in swedish like hur mår du or hallå där. how to differenciate a tourist with genuine intrest to learn or just somebody wanting to inpress? i do not wanna change to english when that person is making an effort. but i dont wanna get the person who would want to inpress in a akward situation.

I think it's a good question. I would try to follow their lead – if someone speaks to you in Swedish, respond in Swedish, but be ready to switch to English if they do. If they greet you in Swedish, maybe greet them back, then see if they continue in Swedish or switch to English. Just my two cents. —Granger (talk · contribs) 09:27, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
