Flags?[edit]

Is using flags instead of country names a good idea? I doubt it because I can read all the names but cannot recognise anywhere near all the flags. Pashley (talk) 19:33, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, they actually look good & they do save space. Objection withdrawn.
There is a small problem, though. For purposes of these statistics, the UNWTO treats China, Macau & Hong Kong as three separate places. We need to maintain that separation and make it clear that when we list Macau & HK as the 9th and 10th highest-revenue tourist "countries" on Earth, we mean Macau alone is 9th & HK alone is 10th. I think that means we should not just put the Chinese flag next to them. On the other hand, we probably should not use the Macau & HK flags. They are part of China and there are touchy issues here; we need to avoid offending people.
When we were using names & links, my compromise was to use "(China)" in the country column for Macau & HK, while using "China" for cities on the mainland. I do not know what to do if we are using flags. Put "(China)" back? Pashley (talk) 01:57, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why is the Pakistan flag a different size than all the others? Pashley (talk) 22:39, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The flag images cause the column sorting to be incorrect (or, more accurately, non-intuitive). I'm not sure it's a good idea. The Pakistan flag looks fine to me. LtPowers (talk) 01:20, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Odd. I just tested and on my machine (1280 by 600 screen, Linux and Firefox) sorting works as I'd expect on every column, except the flags go in some arbitrary order. Pashley (talk) 02:23, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's sorted alphabetically by filename, but that's not a useful sort, since not all of them follow the Flag_of_*****.svg naming convention, and others are things like Flag_of_the_United_Kingdom.svg, which sorts before Flag_of_Turkey.svg.
I think the text names and links for countries/territories are more useful, myself. Easier to read and work with, and not everyone (certainly including me!) will immediately recognize every country's flag. -- D. Guillaume (talk) 02:39, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What about this format? Pakistan otherwise we can link flag images --Saqib (talk) 07:17, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't this page just for us editors? We're not here to show it off to the world, so it doesn't need to be immediately intuitive or obvious if it saves space. If you can't recognise the flag, hover over it, and the name should pop up in the bottom-right corner of your browser. It really should be designed to pop up next to the cursor. I'm not fussed either way, because there's a lot of free space on the right for now, but we may wish to add more columns later and space will be tight. James Atalk 07:54, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, using format Pakistan so it sorts correctly.
For Hong Kong & Macau, format is Hong Kong , with headings fiddled so we don't call them countries. Pashley (talk) 13:41, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well now the flags are just superfluous. LtPowers (talk) 20:58, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What is map link Pashley? --Saqib (talk) 06:18, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many but not all articles now have a link to a map just above & to the right of the banner. Pashley (talk) 10:29, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, got it. --Saqib (talk) 10:32, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Columns[edit]

Pashley, do you think we need another column under "Wikivoyage" where we can mention whether the article is previous featured ? --Saqib (talk) 15:02, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We could add such a column and/or delete the Banner and Map/geo columns since all entries now have those. I do not think this is very important and have no plans to do that work. Pashley (talk) 16:08, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It might also be useful to add rows — the original WP list had 224 cities — but I am not likely to do that either. Pashley (talk) 16:16, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Districting in progress"[edit]

Does that mean discussion on how to district is currently underway, or does it include cities that have district articles but still need "movetodistrict" templates in some sections? Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:26, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What is this list for?[edit]

Is this some kind of reminder for long-time editors or is it intended for "general consumption"? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:05, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was intended for editors, as a sort of refinement of Wikivoyage:World cities with fewer cities but more detail for those. Now that none of these cities have outline status & all have maps & banners (none of which was true when I created the table) it is much less useful. I would not say delete it, but it is of more historical than practical interest now.
If there were a way to make it useful for general consumption, I'd be in favour, but I cannot think of one. Pashley (talk) 18:38, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, it's still useful as a reference, as it's sad that at least the top 10 aren't all guide-level (possibly a good cotm if anyone wants to revive those). Wuhan is now an outline. I wasn't sure what to do with Rome, because there was a revived district discussion, but it seemed to have petered out in January. I updated all the statuses and whether cities were districted, I think, but the populations and potentially other stats could still be updated. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:53, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Lagos City is also an outline and has districts that I cannot manage to wrap my head around. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:02, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, so it is. Thanks for updating it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:28, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
