Replacement for Guanajuato?

[edit]

Guanajuato has been scheduled for 11 March without any support votes. There are issues with the article, and we should consider a replacement. In my opinion, we should raise the bar for scheduling a nominated article. At the very least, there should be one support vote from someone else than the nominator, and no serious issues mentioned. We can consider to nominate Iquitos and put Guanajuato on hold, at least if someone else than yours truly would give it a support vote. /Yvwv (talk) 22:55, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

It looks like a lot has been updated in the Iquitos article, but some of the See and Do listings still need updating, as do some of the prices in "Get around." Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:22, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
There are concerns about civil unrest in Peru. Do we have other placeholders? /Yvwv (talk) 13:02, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

European monopoly on next summer's DotM slots

[edit]

In the schedule we now have nothing but European articles in the DotM section from May to September - five months straight! I think that we should have at least one article from somewhere else in-between, the easiest would be to add that to July's slot - it would result in 2 European+1 from elsewhere+2 European.

Where to look for a replacement? Weather-wise suitable non-European destinations for July can be found in temperate parts of North America (we have a ton of not yet featured U.S. articles) and Asia, plus the tropics south of the Equator where it's dry season.

Vilnius of goes on the main page soon so that one we should not move. Out of Brocken, Glasgow, Lyon and Tirana one needs to be postponed or slushed (if it's not Glasgow, Glasgow would be moved to the vacated slot). Ypsilon (talk) 11:04, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Jakarta/Central needs a few updates, but should that replace one of the four European features after Vilnius? I'll nominate the article once I've updated it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:19, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sure, Jakarta could work. First I was looking at Glacier National Park (Montana) but if we'd run that, it should preferably not be featured in the same month as Tombstone Territorial Park (another North American national park). Ypsilon (talk) 11:29, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Tombstone TP is also more up-to-date (I wrote almost all of it from scratch last November) than Glacier National Park, Montana, though I don't know if Glacier National Park should be featured as a DotM or OtBP, but barring a few updates, it looks feature-worthy to me. I was also going to suggest Daintree Rainforest for one in the Asia–Pacific region, but we featured its respective state article last southern winter. Finished updating the eat section, started drink (will finish tmr) and will update sleep once I get some sleep. @Veracious:, any other thoughts on Central Jakarta before I nominate it? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
We have touched on the dilemma of quality versus diversity before. Hopefully we can agree that a featured article should always be at guide-level quality, with no exception just to represent a country or continent. When we have a surplus of guide-level articles, we can aim for more geographic diversity. Europe is at its finest from May to September (though the inland of the Mediterranean countries might be too hot), but we also have enough guide-level articles from North America and other continents to avoid long streaks of European destinations. /Yvwv (talk) 14:06, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Europe (and the parts of it we cover best - UK, Netherlands, Germany and the Nordic countries - in particular) are best visited in these months, and we should use these months to feature them. Actually, during Northern Hemisphere mid-summer the weather is also suboptimal in most parts of the world where English Wikivoyage has a weak coverage so there's even more reason to run articles from Europe then. Perhaps three or so European articles for each feature type (DotM, OtBP, FTT) would be optimal but not as much as five. Let's add SHB's Jakarta suggestion and/or look if one of the many unfeatured American guide articles could be nominated also. Ypsilon (talk) 14:48, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Hmm, i'll try to do some cleanup... Veracious (talk) 06:35, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to SHB2000, we now have a good non-European candidate - Jakarta/Central - and as mentioned I think we could place it in July's DotM slot to have 2 European+1 non-European+2 European. Out of the European DotM noms, Tirana seems to have the lowest support. We could place Tirana on hold (remove from schedule), move the Glasgow-Lyon couple one month forward and place Jakarta/Central in July's slot. How about that? Ypsilon (talk) 15:34, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
LGTM; thanks for coming up with an alternate solution, Ypsilon! SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 22:03, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ypsilon: It might be too late to make any major scheduling changes now, but I just realised that if we include OtBPs and FTTs, we would have one feature from Europe for 6 consecutive months (from Klaksvík, FO, to Glasgow, but it's 7 if you consider Ankara as semi-European). My first instinct was to swap Belgian coast by tram with Rail travel in Japan so we have one month where this long continuous streak is broken up, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't see it as a problem that there's something in some category from Europe every month. If we start cutting down European OtBPs and FTTs, in a way the many European DotMs stand out even more. Ypsilon (talk) 16:16, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Streamlining the update process somehow?

[edit]

I just updated the OtBP section to show Longyearbyen, as usual it took half an hour with finding the file names for the banners, and the names and authors of their source photos etc. and getting everything copied and pasted in the right place. Possibly it had want faster if I'd been doing this every week and a half like André did when he took care of this until a few years ago. But I'm wondering if it would be possible to streamline the process somehow. Making some of the steps automatic like Template:Discover, maybe omitting some steps, having a link from the banner to the original photo already when the banner is created..? Ypsilon (talk) 20:02, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

With other images the crediting is automatic - just click on the image and the you get the Wikivoyage File: page for the image, which has all the information (or it should have). Template:Banner is different. One possible solution would be to modify Template:Banner so that there is a "click here for photo info" box at the bottom, which behaves like clicking on a regular image. Then we would not need Main Page/Photo credits.
A less radical change would be to put the banners as large thumbnails on Main Page/Photo credits, with text saying to click on the image for information. AlasdairW (talk) 20:39, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for slacking with the Main Page updates recently – I've had other fish to fry IRL recently and fell completely blindsighted to updating the Main page. I would support semi-automating this process, and may propose some solutions when I have spare time on my hands. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:05, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

October 2023

[edit]

None of the featured articles currently scheduled for October 2023 are relevant to a major travel event of international significance: the October 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse. I advise changing the choices for these featured articles so that they can be relevant to the likely millions of people who will be traveling from around the world to see the Annular Solar Eclipse. Nicole Sharp (talk) 08:20, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

First of all, you completely fell oblivious to Ankara, which is to be featured for Türkiye's 100-year anniversary.
Your proposed FTT is neither in style with many past FTTs, nor is it a guide or star article. Most FTTs are scheduled months in advance, and while relevance to current events are considered, they're featured for their quality.
I also doubt there'll be millions of people travelling to see a non-full solar eclipse, but that's a discussion for another day. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:47, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Update needed

[edit]

FTT was supposed to be updated two days ago, could someone please take care of it? Otherwise I might have time to do it tomorrow if I remember. Ypsilon (talk) 19:55, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Time for a South African dive guide?

[edit]

We have featured some of the best sub-articles of Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay, the last one in February 2022. With the customary 24-month cooldown time between neighboring destination, shall we nominate a new one for early 2024? They help us addressing the lack of African destinations. /Yvwv (talk) 01:44, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, for the winter 2024-25 we could run a dive guide, there are even some star dive guides that we haven't featured yet. No need to nominate it yet, though. --Ypsilon (talk) 10:02, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Stockholm itinerary for 2025?

[edit]

We tend to have a 24 month cooldown between features from the same city. Given that the Swedish Empire (with many venues in Stockholm) featured in May 2023, we could consider a Stockholm itinerary for 2025. While the Stockholm Quay Palace tour is elaborate and might need little more work, the Jewish Stockholm tour has too few possible waypoints to ever become a lenghty article. It could be completed in good time for 2025, which is the 250th anniversary for the legalization of Jewish faith in Sweden, the 80th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust, and the 25th anniversary of Sweden's recognition of Jews as an endemic minority. Another candidate could be Haunted Stockholm tour, which could be scheduled around Halloween, to use the dark evenings as a feature rather than a nuisance. Which would you prefer? /Yvwv (talk) 17:51, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've actually been thinking about Gothenburg for DotM for some summer month. That would mean Haunted Stockholm tour for late fall would be slightly better schedule-wise with a few months between Swedish features. --Ypsilon (talk) 19:01, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Gothenburg is about time to feature, with World of Volvo and Feskekôrka newly opened; no Oceana, though. Stockholm environmentalist tour should wait until at least 2026, with much work remaining at the gas works. Södermalm heights tour is in good shape, but could possibly wait until Slussen gets less chaotic. /Yvwv (talk) 20:01, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Gothernburg sounds good for next northern summer. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 21:35, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
How bad are the disturbances from Västlänken? /Yvwv (talk) 22:36, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't have a clue. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 02:45, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
The Jewish Stockholm tour could be suitable for a holiday such as Pesach or Rosh Hashana, making space for Gothenburg at summer (as there should be no overlapping features from the same country). Which are the greatest events in Gothenburg next year? /Yvwv (talk) 13:02, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I improved Jewish Stockholm tour. What does it need to reach guide level? /Yvwv (talk) 22:09, 10 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

San Diego International Airport

[edit]

The San Diego International Airport article has found itself in an awkward spot due to Vancouver International Airport probably being featured this April, the question is when exactly should it be featured, and maybe should it be featured before Vancouver? Someonehere12345 (talk) 02:06, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

San Diego can probably wait; we're no short of US destinations and it allows a buffer between two features from the same state. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 03:11, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Officially there should be at least two years between articles from the same city or region (right now Ohlone Wilderness Trail from California is FTT), meaning it would take until late 2026. However I'm for one definitely not a fan of having articles sitting around forever here on the nominations page, and as per my comment in the E69 nomination the pool of potential FTT candidates is surprisingly small so I'd say we could feature this towards the end of 2025 - after all California is pretty large and East Bay and SD are at almost the opposite ends of the state. --Ypsilon (talk) 09:58, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
