Europe > Britain and Ireland > United Kingdom > England > London > London Stansted Airport
It's the fourth-busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers, with 17 million passing through its gates in 2012.
Stansted is a large airport near Cambridge that is designed to service London with largely low-cost airlines and with connections mostly throughout Europe. Flying into Stansted can potentially be your cheapest flight to London, although bear in mind that the connection to your final destination may be longer than you were hoping, and the cost and hassle may make more central airports a better option after all.
There is one terminal for check in and 3 satellites for boarding planes, as well as another building used during peak hours (6 to 8) that buses passengers to remote stands to board their plane.
Stansted is dominated by the low-cost airlines EasyJet and Ryanair who use the airport as a hub, with holiday charter airlines TUI and Pegasus operating flights as well. Stansted also accommodates a few other scheduled carriers within Europe and a small number of inter-continental flights.
The fastest way to get from the airport to London is via the Stansted Express which stops at Tottenham Hale (for connections to the London Underground's Victoria line) and Liverpool Street. Trains depart every 15 minutes with the journey taking around 45-60 minutes. Single tickets are £19.00, but booking online well in advance of your journey can yield cheaper fares. Coaches are roughly half the price, but take quite a bit longer due to traffic.
In addition to services to London, Arriva CrossCountry rail services operate to Cambridge, Peterborough (for further rail connections to the north-east of England), Leicester, and Birmingham. National Express coach services operate directly to Luton, Coventry, Norwich, Ipswich, Nottingham, Cardiff, and Bath.

Early morning flights
Getting to Stansted for an early morning flight is fairly straightforward as coaches run through the night. These are provided by National Express from Victoria and Liverpool Street railway stations. There is also a direct Citylink coach service to St Pancras station which may be useful for connections to Eurostar, or for trains to northern destinations from King's Cross, St Pancras, or Euston.
Be aware that queues for coaches are very common at Stansted and security checks can easily take an hour. Getting to the airport can also take longer than the proclaimed 90 minutes - traffic along the route can increase journey times up to 120 minutes or beyond. When you arrive at the airport queueing for passport control can easily take up to 2 hours for non-EU passport holders, especially for Sunday night arrivals. Because of this you should allow yourself plenty of time to get to the airport or onward connections.
This is a small, compact airport that is easy to walk through. The layout is a simple rectangle with the south east side the entrance/exit to car parks, hire cars and rail/bus connections. Check-in is in one large hall, at the other side of which is the entrance to security and the departure lounge. Arrivals come in the north side of the main entrance/exit hall.
There is a single, for fee, business lounge but no airline lounges. Apart from eating, drinking, shopping, and sitting around waiting there is little to do at the airport. Bringing something to entertain yourself with, such as a book, is recommended!
