Borobudur and Prambanan

Further subregionalisation

The articles are piling up a bit and I think that this region needs further division. I am not quite sure how to go about it though. If Central Java was to be split into two further sub-regions, does anyone have ideas for that?

We currently have the following city articles breadcrumbed to Central Java:

• Semarang — the administrative capital and an ancient seaport
• Cilacap — a quiet off the beaten track town on the south coast with great potential for tourism development
• Jepara — the furniture manufacturing capital of Indonesia; hundreds of workshops working mostly in teak
• Magelang — the nearest large town to Borobudur with a splendid history from the Mataram period
• Purwokerto — gateway to mighty Mt Slamet and the adjacent highlands
• Solo (Surakarta) — bustling city that has retained a very authentic traditional Javanese nature
• Tegal — north coast town with a strong colonial past
• Wonosobo — sleepy small city and regency nestled between Mt Sindoro and Mt Sumbing
• Yogyakarta — the heritage city of all Java and a semi-autonomous sultanate

• Baturetno
• Wonogiri
• Kendal
• Kudus
• Salatiga
• Kopeng
• Ambarawa

And these Other Destinations:

• Borobudur — the world's largest Buddhist monument
• Dieng Plateau — a volcanic area in the highlands with the oldest standing temples in Indonesia, pre-dating Borobudur by some 100 years
• Karimunjawa — a marine park of 27 islands, well off the beaten track
• Mount Merapi — a perenially active and spectacular volcano
• Parangtritis — a beach to the south of Yogyakarta and easily reached from there
• Prambanan — a collection of awe-inspiring Hindu temples

Hmm, by gut reaction would be to counsel avoiding further subdividing as much as possible, although I know that if anyone could do a good job of this, it would be you. Perhaps you could simply subdivide the city list here? That way we wouldn't have to worry about writing full articles for "East Central Java," "South Central Central Java" and so forth. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 22:33, 28 July 2011 (EDT)

If there is ever a need to subregionalise Central Java further (when there is enough decent content to do so), I think the sensible way to do it will be for the province to be divided along the limits of the previously existing Karesidenan. Although wikivoyage does not always favour formal division, in this case I think at least for Central Java it is quite a sensible one as each area has certain commonality binding them. There is no need to be 100% rigid with the boundaries, but they are roughly as follows: Semarang (Semarang and the bordering regencies), Pati (Kudus, Pati, Jepara, Rembang), Surakarta (Solo, Klaten, Boyolali, Karanganyar, Wonogiri), Kedu (Magelang, Purworejo, Temanggung, Kebumen), Banyumas (Purwokerto, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Cilacap), Pekalongan(All the areas of northern coast from the western border up to Batang), and lastly of course the whole Yogyakarta Special region.

The foreseeable problem will be the naming of the exact region as some of them necessitates duplication, which might confuse the traveller. Of course they can still be changed here and there. These divisions are somewhat still in use locally by the people, if not also formally. Of course, naming divisions with "North Central Java" or "East Central Java" could be more pragmatic and easier for the traveller to handle, but beyond planning it could be much less useful on the ground as it is too arbitrary and nobody is aware of such divisions. Advice on climbing volcanoes

I've added a short piece on the general options for climbing volcanoes across the province, but need advice on how and where to give more specific advice. Hiking will start from different towns depending on location - is it best to put a specific entry with the relevant town or to keep everything together on this page?
