Time to take the Earthquake banner down?[edit]

Apparently, UNESCO world heritage sites are set to reopen tomorrow. Should we move the banner to the Stay Safe section for now? Or take it down altogether? --GeneralPericles (talk) 23:32, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Possible vandal[edit]

User:DaGizza has been adding phone no which is not related with the article in the middle of the article. It seems possible vandal. --Ashishlohorung (talk) 02:24, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

DaGizza is a longtime editor who has long since earned everyone's trust. No doubt, he pasted a phone number in a couple of places by mistake. Welcome to Wikivoyage, and thanks for correcting his error. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:38, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
@Ashishlohorung: I'm a bit confused about this. I found those same numbers on the website of the airport and I assume that's were DaGizza got his information from. Is there something there I am missing out? Drat70 (talk) 02:49, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Actually, I misread his edit. I would have assumed it was accurate, too. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:02, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

Irregular districting[edit]

Are Boudhanath and Thamel the only districts of Kathmandu? If we are considering them both to be districts of Kathmandu, why are they breadcrumbed to Kathmandu Valley instead of Kathmandu? And why does this article apparently have a big city and not a huge city article template and no map of the city showing its division into Wikivoyage districts? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:43, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Kathmandu is not a huge city, but Thamel and Boudha are the two districts where tourists hangout. Other than the downtown (Durba Square and around the palace), the other areas are of no interest to the traveller. As Boudha and Thamel are at opposite ends of the city, it is inconvenient for the traveller to have them listed on the same article.
That's not the way we do things on this site. Every section can be subdivided into two subsections for those two districts if that's most useful to visitors, but they cannot have separate articles unless we are districting the city. The articles in question need to be redirected back to this article if we aren't going to district the city. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:15, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Kathmandu can be dived into districts, such as west or east, but in reality the only suburbs that travellers will venture into are Thamel, Boudha, and Swayambhu. There is nothing of interest in the other surrounding areas. Furthermore, anyone searching for Thamel or Boudha will look for articles under these names, not East Kathmandu or Temple area ect. Basically, I'm trying to use titles that the traveller will look for. Anyway, if you want to reabsorb the two articles back into the general Kathmandu article, that's fine with me, and I will continue to contribute to that article, though, personally, I think it won't be of benefit to the traveller to place Boudha and Thamel under the general heading of Kathmandu, where all the hotel and cafe listings will be mixed up together. For reference, here is the Wikitravel article on Thamel: 05:00, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
It sounds like Kathamandu is halfway in the process of being districted and should probably be districted all the way. Note that we don't need to have too many districts. From the sounds of things, Thamel, Boudha, Swayambhu, downtown and another article or two on the non-touristy areas might work. Most huge cities have at least one non-touristy district since all the districts together have to cover the entire geography of the city. Gizza (roam) 05:10, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
Thamel and Swayambu are not too far apart, and so could perhaps be one article. Boudha is small, but is basically a microcosm of Tibetan culture and has no relationship with the areas around it. Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with the suburbs of Kathmandu, and so cannot be the person to set up the districts. In the mean-time maybe Thamel and Boudha should be separate articles for the convenience of travellers. In reality, it makes no sense to have all the listings on one article, when travellers will be looking for hotels or cafes based on whether they are in Boudha, Thamel, or Central Kathmandu. 13:08, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
No they should not, not if the city is not thoroughly districted. On Wikivoyage, part of the point of the traveller comes first is to have clear organization, mapping and breadcrumb navigation. Irregular, partial districting may be done in the perceived interest of travellers, but it really isn't a great idea. I pointed out above that there are useful ways to subdivide sections of an article about an undistricted city: for instance, Thamel and Boudhanath can be given as subheadings of sections as relevant. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:00, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
As I said, I don't have the knowledge to draw up districts, and so do you want to temporarily leave Boudha and Thamel as separate articles until someone can do the job, or do you want to delete those articles and reabsorb everything back into the main Kathmandu article. I'll hold on adding any new listing until a decision is made. Thanks. 15:52, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
It could even be as simple as having three district pages: Boudha, Thamel and the rest of Kathmandu. That seems to be the de facto situation. We just need to expressly say that, create a map and organise all of the articles based on this three-way split. Gizza (roam) 21:24, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
OK, I've looked at the map, and I think this might work in terms of solving the issue and placing related and geographically close attractions under the same banner, 'Thamel and West Kathmandu' 'Central Kathmandu'. 'Boudha and East Kathmandu'. I have tentatively added these titles on the Kathmandu page, but will not initiate the new articles until I get feedback. 04:35, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with Kathmandu myself and would be happy to support any consensus on how best to district the city for Wikivoyage readers. Please post an announcement at Requests for comment. I'd do it myself, but I'm on the road and busy with important projects unrelated to Wikivoyage right now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:12, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
Districts looks like a good idea. There is a reasonable number of listings in the article and if people with local knowledge recommend a split, then I think it should be tried. But please do not do a half job, all listing need to be moved and the main article needs a few paragraphs describing the highlights. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:49, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
As the attractions of KTM are spread out across the city, it makes sense to break the city up into districts. I have time constraints, but I'll slowly move the listings to the correct articles. 09:19, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
IP user, while there is no obligation to do so, it would be helpful for the community if you created a named account rather than editing from multiple different IP addresses. This carries several benefits for you, but also makes it easier for the rest of us to know who's doing what. You're making many helpful edits, so it would be a shame not to receive credit for them.
