Complete list of Cities

Map
Map of Lagos State
Okay. I don’t think all these should be included on the map, though. They are part of Lagos City. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 22:53, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
They should probably go on a map in Lagos City, or Lagos City/Mainland. At the moment it is useful to see where a newly created suburb sits compared to the ones that we already have - so that new listings get added to the right article. AlasdairW (talk) 23:43, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Lagos State and City are kind of a mess. I'd support anyone who wants to take on reorganizing this. Ground Zero (talk) 01:26, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's definitely a mess and needs some tender loving care. I'm willing to volunteer in cleaning it up, but only after 2022/02/15, 15 days after the Nigeria Expedition has concluded to minimize the disruption. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 01:45, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense. And thanks for volunteering. Ground Zero (talk) 01:55, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

It's likely that a bunch of these have to be merged. There's just more and more being created, that some of them just duplicate the content in another. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:11, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm keeping this on hold until we get all the copyvios sorted out first. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 22:11, 18 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Arguably, the copyvios were far more important to deal than this, but since that's mostly* sorted out.

However, I'm thinking on whether some of the suburbs like Isolo or Ojuelegba should be merged into Lagos City/Mainland, somewhat along the lines of my one-month worth of merging all the suburbs of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland into a new Sunshine Coast article. While the Sunshine Coast has a population 50 times smaller than Lagos City, the key thing that nearly every single one of these suburb articles lack is see/do listings, which was something I noticed when doing that merge.

Another thing that should ideally be done is defining what's Lagos City, and what's outside Lagos City. My first instincts would be to use local government areas, because it seems to reflect the state of most articles created during this expedition were created on the grounds of municipal boundaries. While in most cases, municipal boundaries have often failed, if done properly, it can work out well – perhaps look at SEQ or Greater Brisbane, entirely based upon municipal boundaries.

Another issue I see is how the scope of "mainland" is defined. According to Wikipedia and OSM, Lagos Mainland (Q6472602), it only covers a small part of the mainland, not what our article suggests.

I'll be drafting a map soon, and what I propose is that we revamp the districts based on local government areas, which:

  • has a clearly defined scope, on what's there, and what's not
  • prevents a lot of listings outside a destination, which is currently an issue in many articles
  • enough see and do listings to be covered
  • easily available OSM data – meaning we don't need to handdraw a static map, which few can do

I also did find a map of Lagos City's LGAs, but it seems to be inaccurate, so I don't think we should use that one for now. I'll start a draft of the district boundaries soon, and I'll comment here when I'm done with that. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:59, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

For reference, here's a map of the new proposed districts. The two major anomalies currently on the map as of May 20, 21:26 (UTC+10):
  • Apapa is another victim of a disappearing mapshape
  • Lagos Island should only be showing the western half of the island, which I have corrected on OSM – that same wikidata id was used on both the LGA and the island. I removed the wikidata id as that was incorrect.
Other opinions to the proposed districts? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:31, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
And Apapa is back, leaving only Lagos Island. Now only Lagos Island left, which will take a few days. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:42, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bikes disallowed?

[edit]

Magodo#By bike says "Entering Magodo by bike is not possible due to the ban by the state government on bike." That prohibition should be explained here if true, removed otherwise. I have a problem understanding such a prohibition, so something about the background would be good to tell. –LPfi (talk) 07:49, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Me too. @B.Korlah may probably know more about this. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:09, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well, the Lagos State Government issued a ban on bikes into some areas of the state, so I guess that area (Magodo) is affected, so that should be why the editor had written it in that way. B.Korlah (talk) 10:43, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Although, I can’t really confirm if Magodo was indeed affected by that ban, but I’d make confirmation and try to get back. B.Korlah (talk) 10:46, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I found this article by the Guardian. It seems to have the reason why they're banned. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:52, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
We should also clarify whether the ban is on motorbikes, pedal cycles or both. Although having looked at Lagos roads on StreetView, I can see that pedalling around the city may not be popular. AlasdairW (talk) 19:51, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

The ban is on motorbikes. Pedal cycles are not really used as commercial mode of transportation, it is rather used as a personal exercise mechanism and personal movement in some cases (definitely a short journey). B.Korlah (talk) 07:42, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Is "bike" used for motorbikes in Nigeria? Saying entering "by bike" is forbidden is seriously misleading if it concerns only motorbikes. If I had a motorbike, I wouldn't think the By bike section concerns me. –LPfi (talk) 08:58, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I'd think that "bike" would mean a bicycle, not a motorcycle. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:00, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Same here, though in the U.S., we also recognize motorbikes as different (less heavy) from motorcycles. And now, there are motorized bicycles, too. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:01, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
