Talk:Sydney Airport

I read this a few times.. still not sure what it means? (and I have used this terminal quite a few times)

"If you are arriving at terminal 3, don't expect people to be able to get to the gate to meet you on a late arrival as they will have to wait at baggage claim if you arrive after the last departure."

I suspect it means that after the last departure, they close the security screening to enter the gate area. —The preceding comment was added by 202.159.138.231 (talkcontribs)

Guide and Featured Travel Topic?[edit]

I think this could be a good FTT towards the end of the 2018, when a year has passed since our we last featured an airport (Manchester Airport). Currently we have two guide airport articles that haven't been featured yet, but as the last airport was Manchester and the number of American nominees have almost gotten out of hand, neither Heathrow Airport nor Seattle-Tacoma International Airport would be the optimal. Also, this would be our first featured airport from the Southern Hemisphere.

I just added a dynamic map and coordinates for the terminals and hotels. What else needs to be added for the article to achieve guide status so that it could be nominated for FTT? Does it look good already?

Obviously prices and such might not be up to date, but given they can possibly change during the 10 months before the article hits the main page, let's update them later. --ϒpsilon (talk) 09:00, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I have always thought of airport articles as useful pieces that supported other articles (for example Sydney) rather than being a FTT in themselves. Andrewssi2 (talk) 20:18, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't worked a lot on airport articles but improving Sydney Airport and making it a guide and FTT quality sounds like a good idea. Gizza (roam) 01:13, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No more suggestions? I'll upgrade it to guide and nominate it to see what happens. ϒpsilon (talk) 10:42, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage Sleep policy[edit]

Briefly, there has been a discussion regards to what hotels should be listed on an airport page (See Wikivoyage_Talk:Airport Expedition#Airport hotels, O'Hare, and policy). As I've just done quite a bit of work just getting the Eat & Drink section in order, the next section that could bring this article back down to useable is over the hotel listings. I propose 3 options over what would be allowed on Sydney Airport, (and hotels which aren't close enough to the airport are moved to Sydney/Botany Bay):

  1. Only consider Hotels on Sydney Airport site - This would mean that Ridges Sydney Airport would be allowed.
  2. Only consider Hotels which are within the ring road that surrounds the airport - This would then include ibis budget and Mantra.
  3. Consider Hotels which live within 1.1km radius of the Train station locations, and 1.1km radius from Shep's Mound - This would include all hotels on this list except for one hotel not at all close by.

I would prefer option 3. It gives those hotels which are clearly serving the Airport than the ones where it could be a bit more of a mix.

My question is whether there's much around the airport such that hotels could serve anyone other than people who have to catch a flight the next day and whether these hotels could very reasonably be listed in other articles. Those should be the determining factors. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:08, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. You'd need to look at Sydney/Botany Bay (the district that contains the airport), which right now doesn't contain a whole lot. There's been some back and forth on the official policy, and I'm not sure we've come up with a one-size-fits-all rule yet, but my opinion is that any hotel for which "being close to the airport" is its defining characteristic and pretty much its only appeal is fair game for listing in an airport article. While the Botany Bay district is referred to as "Airport & Botany Bay" on Sydney, I would see no problem in moving the listings for airport hotels from that district into this article, and putting a "see also" hatnote in Botany Bay for anyone looking for accommodations close to the airport. --Bigpeteb (talk) 20:03, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

how will we name this when the new intl airport opens?[edit]

Just wondering how will this article be written when Nancy Bird Walton Airport Opens?

Wouldn't "Sydney Airport" cause confusion? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:33, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Probably Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport or something along these lines. It's often useful to follow the lead of Wikipedia, and they currently too use Sydney Airport for this airport. --Ypsilon (talk) 10:19, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then there's also Camden Airport. But it's not considered as part of Sydney. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:22, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I know we're about four years away, but I am wondering whether we should rename this article to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport? It's the full name of the airport, and its usage is increasing in local media to distinguish it from the currently under-construction Western Sydney Airport. I guess this is not the most urgent thing, and we can probably wait another year or two, but it is worth considering it. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:20, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
