Translation from Russian

I've begun the process of translating chunks of this article from the Russian WV. I'm going to list here information which I omit and the justification for doing so. I'd be happy to put these anyone if anyone disagrees with my reasons, or doesn't, but thinks it would be a good addition, anyway. ARR8 (talk) 01:48, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Understand section:

• The location of Volgograd on the Volga. I don't think English-speaking travelers would be familiar enough with the Volga to want to know the city's exact location.
• Time zone information. The time zone section in the Russian article discusses the city relative to Moscow time and neighboring regions. This is unlikely to interest someone traveling to the region.
• Mention of a Russian writer having been to the city. Not likely to have meaning for English speakers.
• A listing for provided excursions. The website is down, and the Russian WV doesn't mention that they are provided in English.

The information about its location on the Volga might be a good thing to retain, but otherwise I agree with you. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 02:19, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

None of these need to be kept, but IMO (in my opinion, that is) the first two should be added to this article and the second two don't need to be. I agree with AndreCarrotflower that the location along the river is useful, and the fact that English don't know about the Volga, and local geography, seems to me all the more reason to include that information. Time zone information is also useful, although only a sentence or so saying that the time zone is the same as Moscow, or UTC+2 or whatever, is all that is needed for travelers. But I think basic time zone information is useful in an article, since we don't want travelers' schedules to go wrong.

About the second two: the mention of a Russian writer is okay as trivia, but I agree that it's not needed here unless the writer is well-known outside of Russia. I'm a little confused by the last one, but from what I understand it doesn't sound like it's necessary.

Volga is the longest river in Europe, probably among the 10-20 most famous rivers in the world and the city is even named after it so we should most definitly mention it in the article. Time zone is usually not something we mention at city level (unless for example the city is in a separate timezone from the surrounding area). If the writer is someone whose name people could possibly recognize even if they're not into literature (e.g. Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Tolstoy), by all means mention him/her, otherwise not. If you by excursion mean tours, I think they need to be available in English too and be within our tour policy. --ϒpsilon (talk) 11:41, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Given the fact that the nearby city of Saratov is in the different time zone, the time zone of Volograd would be very natural to mention. --Alexander (talk) 17:29, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
