Guangzhou

Hi WindHorse, I would like to thank you too for your great work on the Guangzhou page. I'll be travelling to Guangzhou again in December and last time I was there, I thought that the city is somewhat difficult to grasp. There are only few guidebooks that have anything about GZ and the maps are usually horrible or in Chinese.

I have been creating a vector street map, but my progress is starting to slow down, since I don't have all the street names. Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about the city, I wonder if you could take a look at the map I have created and give me some feedback? The debate

I have been working on Jharkhand for the past few days. I found there were some locations – just general cities. Then I added ‘National Parks’ and ‘Pilgrimage centres’. Now, there could be some places not defined by any of these. I would have to think of another heading to suit that. I personally feel that it is extremely difficult to standardize these things round the world. You have to allow for local variations. I had not given a thought earlier to the matter. Now I have seen the India page. I think the Indian tourist would look more at the state pages or even individual sites, it is the foreign tourist who will have a look at the India page. For the cities you can just go by the size and probably stop at six or seven. For the other places you have to start with Agra, that is the No. 1 attraction. For sacred sites your list seems to be okay. So you can have three tables – general cities, sacred places and other attractions. Other attractions can include historical places, National Parks, beaches and so on. It would mean about 15-20 places in all. I have seen the Indian National Parks page. I will create a subsection on "Other wildlife sanctuaries" on that page and list those sanctuaries which are not national parks officially. I find that there are two Sunderban pages - Sunderbans and Sundarban National Park, one of the pages is blank. They should be combined together. South African phone numbers

I notice that you have changed the phone numbers for Soweto. Note that South Africa is changing to manditory 10 digit dialing. +27 11 123 4567 will be a valid number when phoning for outside South Africa, but internal call will require you to dial 011 123 4567, even when in the same city. Dialing just 123 4567 still works at the moment, but will not work after 16 January 2007. See this notice from Telkom for details.

Adminning redux

I know that some time in the past, you were nominated to be an admin, but declined the nomination. Any chance you might reconsider? There has been an important change in the capabilities of an admin, pertaining to the "Patrol" feature; read about it here if it's unfamiliar to you. Note specifically the "Auto-patrol" part. This by itself would be an enormous help to the rest of us admins even if you don't do a lot of the other admin functions yourself, because your own edits are invariably thoughtful and appropriate, and having them auto-patrolled (via an option you get when you become an admin) would save all the admins a lot of time as we sort through the other edits. Kolkata distrification

Park St hould come under Maidan, although Park Circus (the eastern end of Park St) should be in East Kolkata.

Basically, Maidan is bounded by (in clockwise direction from the North)

1. Auckland Rd
2. Esplanade Bus Terminus (the terminus and subway will be in Esplanade)
3. The northern bit of Chowringhee (renamed Nehru Rd) till the Park St subway station
4. Turns SE along Park St till Hungerford St, 100m East of the Camac St crossing
5. Turns right at Hungerford St
6. Heads south along Hungerford St till AJC Bose Rd crossing
7. The whole of AJC Bose Rd
8. Becomes Strand Rd
9. North along Strand Rd till Auckland Rd

So the part of Park St which is west of Hungerford St i.e. approx.nos. 1 to 120 (since Hungerford St _|_ to Park St) falls within the Maidan district.

Sudder St will come under Esplanade.

Middleton Row will come under Maidan, so will Middleton St.

Park St east of Hungerford St (nos. 120 onwards) will come under Kolkata/East

It isn't complicated at all. If you take out a map of Cal and trace the route which I have drawn you'll realize that it's simple. You see, when one thinks of Park St one thinks of the shopping area (i.e. the western bit near the subway station). No Calcuttan will place Park St under Esplanade. Golmud

Why did you compress the Get In (By Train and Bus) information for Golmud and leave off the locations of the train station and the bus station? I could understand doing this if the article had a lot more information but it is kind of empty. My rationale for doing what I did was to add a little volume to empty articles in the hopes that people will be willing to add info to an article that looks like it has some substance to it. I'm going to have to think about what you said regarding the expansion of the info, give me food for thought. Re: trains - specially built for the journey between the lower mainland cities and Lhasa, each train is pressurized from about xian or lanzhou up to lhasa so that as the train climbs the pressure increases in increments so us poor mortals can adjust to the elevation. Kind of like the pressureization of an airplane but over a long distance and a long time. Golmud is just a regular stop on the line to Lhasa. Next month. I have hols from the 16th to the 29th. And once this is launched, there'll be loads of advantages -

• I get to practice my Hindi, I had to choose between Hindi and Sanskrit for Grade 9 (begins this April) and I picked Sanskrit.
• It'll benifit travellers in Northern India
• It'll be the start of Indian language wikis
• All the technical terms will help in my Sanskrit, my vocab will improve

So once I'm done I'm going to try a Bengali wiki, that might be easier because I can take help from my parents, none of my parents can write Hindi (my dad reads a bit).

Southeastern Guizhou

Hi, windhorse. I am not sure if you know Chinese or not. In Chinese, "Qian" is an abbreviation of "Guizhou", and "Dongnan" means "Southeastern". I think Southeastern Guizhou is a direct translation of Guizhou.

Found a bunch of old photos from my trip to china and I scanned them and then posted. The Buddha is really cool. the Temple is really dark so I had to photoshop the image. The jade stands like about 12-15 feet tall and sits up on this pedestal. They had this viewing platform you paid to climb so you could be even with the jade. Actually its modern, kind of - the area is kind of a magnet for jade seekers. This piece of jade was found near Anshan in one of the outlying districts and when it was discovered to be the largest on record. the county government paid to have the best craftsman add the images, on both sides by the way. The Guanyin (I think that is what she is called) is really welldone.

Around the Guanyin are temples and other mountain scenery in miniture and also along the back.

Interesting that you guys find Bombay such a great place. Along with Delhi, it's one of the major cities that I feel the least attraction towards. Of the metros, I much prefer Kolkata and Bangalore. The point is that Bombay is a city which grows on you, it's all about 18?19?20? million people of different faiths, from different states who speak different languages, and yet the feeling of brotherhood among Bombayites is awesome. Delhi is a horrible place -- it's full of uncouth people, most of whom are racist xenophobes. No worries I appreciate what you're doing and I bow to your superior knowledge of practices here on Wikivoyage. In retrospect, it makes sense that the average traveler would not need to have the populations of all cities in a region listed in an overview, whereas a simple list of said cities might be helpful. Clearly, the scope of this guide is for the use of a traveler to the region, and I agree that the political situation is necessary to be explained, but not the emphasis. I think that your edits to the article are completely appropriate and I have no interest in challenging or changing them. Thanks for your assistance and tutelage. Siberia Map

Thank you for your kind words. The Krasnoyarsk Krai issue is complicated and I'm not sure that the solution I am now employing is optimal. The three purple regions on the map were formerly separate Federal Districts (Krasnoyarsk Krai, Evenkia, and Taymyria), but just recently were united under the jurisdiction of Krasnoyarsk Krai, maintaining some degree of autonomy for Evenkia and Taymyria. So I have grouped them all under the name Krasnoyarsk Krai, while using the name Krasnoyarsk (region) for the smaller territory formerly known as Krasnoyarsk Krai.

I think it makes sense to still keep these destinations separate, since they constitute very different and vast destinations. I also think it is useful to group them together as Siberia's northern region, since a traveler would likely need to go through "Krasnoyarsk (region)" to get to the other two. But this is clearly a confusing layout. Hi, sorry I didn't explain earlier. The suffix seemed superfluous as Louisville was already identified as being in the 'United States of America', and so obviously 'the Georgia' that it was linked to was not the country in the Caucasus region, and only other Georgia in the US is a small town in Vermont. In addition, adding the suffix only to the Georgia link and not to the other states listed seemed somehow un..un... un... unbalanced (???). Went back to those pages you added Tibetan to and all I see are those boxes in a row. Same thing happens when I look at hotel or activity listings written the wikivoyage way. I get the same thing in both cases when I'm using Firefox, but everything works fine for me in Safari (I'm on a Mac). I read somewhere that Firefox can't handle certain alphabets, perhaps IE is the same way? In the listings, we've got new listing templates that are in use on some pages, and the box your seeing is supposed to be a telephone icon. Nepal regions

Hi Windhorse,

The government's super-zones must have been set up for administrative convenience. They lack geographic, historical & cultural validity. Of course travelers might be better equipped to deal with the bureaucracy if they are somewhat familiar with the government's schema. So let's leave this scheme alone for bureaucratic purposes.

However for other travel purposes it made more sense to me to organize things by drainage basins: (1) Kosi in the east, (2) Bagmati (Kathmandu Valley), (3) most of the Gandaki basin, (4) (west) Rapti and Babai basins and stuff north of them (technically in the Gandaki and Karnali/Bheri basins) through the Dhaulagiri range and valleys behind, and (5) the remainder of the Karnali/Bheri basin and Mahakali up to the Indian border. Perhaps these could be called Kosi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Rapti-Dhaulagiri, and Karnali-Mahakali Regions.

For travel purposes it seemed really unnatural to divide Mid-West and Far-west at the Karnali River! Nepalis and trekkers quickly get across rivers via primitive ferryboats or bridges. Major drainage divides -- these tend to be high ridges -- make more sense than rivers as boundaries. Getting up to these ridges can be a serious hike! Nepalis are as practical as anyone else and try to avoid it, thus drainage divides are cultural divides too.

The way I did it has more historical validity too. Khas peoples speaking the progenitor of Nepali developed their core identity in the Mahakali and Karnali/Bheri basins. They detoured around the Babai/Rapti basins into the Gandaki basin to settle and grow rice. Prithvi Narayan appears there in the 1700s and heads east to conquer the Bagmati region (Kathmandu valley), then the Kosi region beyond. He or his heirs also consolidate the rest of the country -- the "Chaubisi" (24 principality confederation of the Gandaki basin) and the "Baisi" (22 principality confederation of the Karnali/Bheri basin).

Each river-oriented region can also be subdivided by elevation into Terai (Madesi and Tharu), Lower hills (Brahman-Chhetri), upper hills (Magar, Gurung, Tamang, etc.), then Bhote (Tibetan). It may be a little complicated, but travelers exposed to this stuff will be better prepared for "ground truth".

Hi Windhorse - Pretty good fit! My own expertise starts about at Pokhara and runs west into Rapti Zone and north to Dhorpatan and Jomosom. Unfortunately I never got very far into the Karnali-Bheri basin. Hopefully someone else will come along and work on that.

See what you think of the north-south geographical zones I added. This time I didn't mess with what was already there. I didn't work on the river basin aspect but will later, again leaving the big administrative regions alone

I added a few cities and destinations and some "respect" paragraphs. Possibly the food section could be expanded to explain how cuisine varies from north to south and by ethnicity. So far we are only hinting at those dimensions.

I'm also thinking it would might be good to add a discussion of ethnic groups, at least as much as travelers need and can absorb.

Maybe the administrative regions can be tossed out now. Development workers need to know them; travelers don't.

We have a matrix: south to north by elevation; west to east by river basins.

Most treks are along along rivers and streams that flow south. Going east or west usually means going against the grain with a lot more up and down, with some exceptions. A trekker chooses a region along the east-west axis, then decides how low to start and how high to go.

Having explained the south-to-north geography and the west-to-east flow of history, maybe we need to go back and talk about destinations and hubs with transportation, lodging, health care, etc., and what ethnic groups found in each 'cell' of the matrix.

    • Rolpa district was the flashpoint of the Maobadi rebellion and is still a stronghold. Adventure tourism featuring battle sites, 'liberated' areas and lifestyle of Kham nationality could develop.

• Gandaki Basin
  • Outer Terai
    • cities: Bhairawa: transportation hub and border crossing
    • Butwal - possible stopping point on east-west highway, buses to Tansen, Pokhara etc.

    • Terai ethnic groups: extension of Bihar. Bhojpuri is important dialect.
  • Inner Terai is Chitwan with game preserve. Narayani river has two types of crocodiles, birds, fish, large alluvial zone.

      • trade route from Tansen down to Gandaki River has foot traffic from about a dozen ethnic groups, lined with teashops.
    • Ridi Bazaar on Gandaki RIver an important pilgrimage site, possible mela (fair), Rana palace

    • Nuwakot - fortified city that was Prithvi Narayan's first conquest

Probably text about regions can parsed down some. However after looking at the India article, I don't think the Nepal article has gotten too long yet. Bhutan is a much simpler country to write about than Nepal, also I think you need to be on a guided tour spending big bucks. Travelers probably can't design own itineraries.

Eventually the Nepal article will probably grow until it needs to spin off regional articles. The main article still needs to set the stage with geographical superstructure: elevation zones and river basins.

I really enjoy reading some of these articles. That one seems like a topic for "Survivor". I got tired just thinking about the physical aspects of that trip. One of the problems with getting old, is that when your kids are gone and you can afford it, you no longer are fit for it. Same goes for food, you can afford to eat what you want, but your body cannot take it. Elevations of destinations also becomes very important. Anyway, keep it up, I like to read of Great Adventures. Well, to me the very fact that this mistake occurred is another reason to consolidate our Ireland pages—no one was even sure where the discussion should be taking place. To address the point that you raised, I would be surprised to see differing visa regulations between Northern Ireland and Ireland, since there are no border controls between the two countries; you can drive straight from Belfast to Dublin without ever showing a passport. Also, I would not at all object to your proposal (alas, had I seen it) to move the Republic of Ireland article to Ireland (republic), but I really don't want to have to go back and change the 200 odd links to the country page again! --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 22:11, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Ah, I am glad to hear you are not objecting outright to the move. I will try to make it very clear that when we say "Ireland" we are referring to the island rather than the country. As it was before, Northern Ireland was still included in the Irish hierarchy, but was buried in the Ulster region. I will "fix" the quickbar problem with Ireland, but it will not look very pretty. Hello, Thanks for your message. I reverted the edit because the ferry rides are tours and not considered public transportation. I guess in practice it's a good way to get around the lake but their priority is to guide people on the places they are stopping. I put that information on the Do section.

BTW, I did put in an explanation on the summary for that edit.

Need to mention one more thingh about Patna- Patna Museum is the state museum of Bihar. It was built by the British during the British Raj in the year 1917 to house the historical artefacts found in the vicinity of Patna [2]. It is built in the style of Mughal and Rajput architecture. It is called the Jadu Ghar by locals.

It is a multi-purpose museum. The items on display include archaeological objects, coins, art objects, paintings, instruments, textiles, paintings, thankas, bronze images and sculptures and terracotta images of Hindu and Buddhist artists.[3]

It has a rare collection of paintings of British period depicting day to day life and a fine collection related to the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad.

The fossil of a tree said to be more than 200 million years old is on display at the museum.[4]

Also on display is a casket unearthed at the Relic Stupa of Vaishali, which is said to contain the sacred ashes (relics) of Buddha.

Didarganj Yakshi is the most prized collection of this museum.[5]

It is one of the richest museum in India.

Hi there! I realise that it would be a waste of time to duplicate lots of information. I thought it might be worthwhile having a region article on the Swansea Bay area because most people wouldn't know about the areas surrounding Swansea and just search for Swansea. There are quite a few places worth visiting that are just outside the city proper and I think they are worth a mention. I did mention in the article that it is just about highlights of the surrounding area and it is better to view the main town town and city articles for more details. Is this OK? I would very much appreciate your input, and any guidance you might have for finding additional sources of maps that I could use to make it more accurate, or perhaps add more content like park/reserve boundaries.
