Happy New Year to you too. Sorry for keeping you so busy :)

Ulan-Ude[edit]

Do you care if I move Ulan-Ude to Ulan Ude? -- (WT-en) Sapphire 23:02, 12 August 2006 (EDT)

Silang[edit]

hey, Silang is a municipality/town in Cavite. Its not a city in Cavite.

About that mountain :-)[edit]

Hey Windhorse,

I have added the getting there information for the Gopalswamy betta in the Bandipur National Park page. I think that information is required as this peak isn't directly accessible from the National Park. It has a seperate route. I'll be adding a few images. Hope you don't move them :-)

Hey Windhorse,

The hill has a seperate enterance fee. You do not pay a fee to enter the Bandipur National Park either, rather I did not pay anything :-) Also, the enterance fee is charged per vehicle and not per person. (WT-en) Sushilsiddesh

Re: Mazar[edit]

Hey there WindHorse, thanks for the collaboration on the Mazar page! Wasn't aware about that rule on the links. I added a little basic info in the 'stay safe' section, but couldn't think of more, it felt alright when i was there (except for an attempted police shakedown which I smiled thru) but obviously things can change quickly. I also re-added the info about Delhi Darbar, I think it got deleted accidentally when you reverted to a previous version. If you did remove it on purpose I'd love to hear why. Thanks again! I'm in Herat now, so will update if possible that section later...

West Bengal[edit]

Just seen your message. How do you decide? General importance of towns or those of tourist interest? -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 00:40, 16 October 2006 (EDT)

I think I will be able to help out. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 02:15, 16 October 2006 (EDT)

Guangzhou[edit]

Hi WindHorse, I would like to thank you too for your great work on the Guangzhou page. I'll be travelling to Guangzhou again in December and last time I was there, I thought that the city is somewhat difficult to grasp. There are only few guidebooks that have anything about GZ and the maps are usually horrible or in Chinese.

I have been creating a vector street map, but my progress is starting to slow down, since I don't have all the street names. Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about the city, I wonder if you could take a look at the map I have created and give me some feedback? Also if you have any resources (online or offline) that you could point out, I would be happy. You can find my email address from my user page. Thanks!

-- (WT-en) Trsqr 23:44, 17 October 2006 (EET)

Allright, but thanks anyway, your contribution's great! Lonely Planet has quite a bad map, but I managed to order two second hand maps from mid-90s - I hope they'll help me. -- (WT-en) Trsqr 19:43, 18 October 2006 (EET)

The debate[edit]

I have been working on Jharkhand for the past few days. I found there were some locations – just general cities. Then I added ‘National Parks’ and ‘Pilgrimage centres’. Now, there could be some places not defined by any of these. I would have to think of another heading to suit that. I personally feel that it is extremely difficult to standardize these things round the world. You have to allow for local variations. Since I do not have information on the full debate you are referring to, I am unable to comment immediately. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 07:35, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

I had not given a thought earlier to the matter. Now I have seen the India page. I think the Indian tourist would look more at the state pages or even individual sites, it is the foreign tourist who will have a look at the India page. For the cities you can just go by the size and probably stop at six or seven. For the other places you have to start with Agra, that is the No. 1 attraction. For sacred sites your list seems to be okay. So you can have three tables – general cities, sacred places and other attractions. Other attractions can include historical places, National Parks, beaches and so on. It would mean about 15-20 places in all. That should be good enough for a country page but then people would be fighting and changing things. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 10:53, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

National Parks[edit]

I have seen the Indian National Parks page. I will create a subsection on "Other wildlife sanctuaries" on that page and list those sanctuaries which are not national parks officially. I find that there are two Sunderban pages - Sunderbans and Sundarban National Park, one of the pages is blank. They should be combined together. I have an intention to work on that page in near future. First, combine them please. There is no point in developing two pages. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 09:37, 28 October 2006 (EDT)

Sundarban spelling is okay. That is more in tune with the Bengali pronounciation. I will change it wherever it is otherwise, in order to standardise. Apart from India-based text, I have earlier poked my nose in Scotland - Loch Ness, Fort William and Glencoe. Now I am trying to meddle in Lake District National Park. Thanks for all the support. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 23:34, 28 October 2006 (EDT)
Macbeth's Birnam Woods are there but Scotland is diametrically opposite to Bengal. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 23:46, 28 October 2006 (EDT)

Sundarbans[edit]

I don't really know. I saw you make the redirection from Sundarbans to Sundarbans National Park and changed it based on that. (WT-en) OldPine 07:24, 29 October 2006 (EST)

Maps[edit]

Thanks. Your words of appreciation have given me the confidence to go ahead with such maps for some of the Indian sites I have put on here. It takes time but I will do it. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 01:07, 4 November 2006 (EST)

Bhadrachalam[edit]

Hi Wind, please let me know if the write up on Bhadrachalam is satisfactory now. ;-)

South African phone numbers[edit]

I notice that you have changed the phone numbers for Soweto. Note that South Africa is changing to manditory 10 digit dialing. +27 11 123 4567 will be a valid number when phoning for outside South Africa, but internal call will require you to dial 011 123 4567, even when in the same city. Dialing just 123 4567 still works at the moment, but will not work after 16 January 2007. See this notice from Telkom for details.

Kipedo National Park[edit]

...should be Kidepo Valley National Park?

Yes, you are correct. It has been moved. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:46, 13 November 2006 (EST)

Thank You[edit]

Thank you for your concern, though I have a lot more to learn about wiki pages. :) (WT-en) Aphrodisiac 11:50, 27 November 2006 (EST)

You keep tracking me , thank you, i feel safe :))) I have a few questions though, I copy images from the net, especialy from the web sites of the municipalities i am editing the cities of. Is it against copyrights??(WT-en) Aphrodisiac 10:05, 28 November 2006 (EST)

York/Leeds[edit]

I'm pretty happy keeping York in there for the time being since York is a larger city than the others listed in "other destinations". Really I was just exhuasted from arguing about Leeds for weeks on the UK talk page, but as long as others want to go with York, and it's not just me going for it, that's fine with me. Anyway, we'll see how it goes, if we're really, really lucky they may not even notice. Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and upload the region and county maps in the meantime. --(WT-en) Paul. 17:47, 30 November 2006 (EST)

Upamanyuwikivoyage here[edit]

Hi windhorse,

Thanx for the support on the Pune article. And after the CoW I'm sure we'll make it a star.

And the picture is Kathgodam, Uttaranchal, which borders Himachal Pradesh.

(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:56, 9 December 2006 (EST)

Hi,

I supported Pune for CoW, and I hope it will b'come a star. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 05:34, 12 December 2006 (EST)

Do come to India if possible. You can visit Nainital and you'll pass the bridge (the one in the photo) if you take the train. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 05:34, 12 December 2006 (EST)

future star?[edit]

What do you think about the Flores article, can you give it a once over if you have a second, I'm trying to give it the final push it needs to make Star status... (WT-en) Cacahuate 11:58, 16 December 2006 (EST)

Cool, thanks for the help, good cleanup! (WT-en) Cacahuate 00:22, 17 December 2006 (EST)

Adminning redux[edit]

I know that some time in the past, you were nominated to be an admin, but declined the nomination. Any chance you might reconsider? There has been an important change in the capabilities of an admin, pertaining to the "Patrol" feature; read about it here if it's unfamiliar to you. Note specifically the "Auto-patrol" part. This by itself would be an enormous help to the rest of us admins even if you don't do a lot of the other admin functions yourself, because your own edits are invariably thoughtful and appropriate, and having them auto-patrolled (via an option you get when you become an admin) would save all the admins a lot of time as we sort through the other edits. Please think about it... -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:09, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Island Peak edits[edit]

There was nothing at all wrong with your edits that I rolled back. I simply screwed up -- meant to click the "Patrolled" button and clicked the wrong button (one that we admins have) to do a revert. Sorry about that. I've undone the damage I did. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 10:42, 13 January 2007 (EST)

That was quick[edit]

That was a quick response to Ae-a. Thanks for the help. -- (WT-en) Andrew H. (Sapphire) 09:38, 14 January 2007 (EST)

Ya, upamanyu here[edit]

Yeah, i got it, won't do such stuff again, PROMISE.

I'll try and help on the Delhi article and Shimla. I don't remember much, just that I stayed in a place called Oberoi Cecil and walked on The Ridge. But I still have my travel diary, so I'll look it up and work on the article.

Thanks, bye. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 10:18, 24 January 2007 (EST)

I'll find time to work on both Delhi and Shimla. I found my travel diary in my cupboard and there's a fair bit of info. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 03:45, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Here's my answer - I AM NOT USING ANY BROCHURE. I'm doing random googling to find out the websites and opening hours. And the reviews are from my own travel diary. Don't worry.

P.S. I am consulting the web to find out opening hours, entry prices and items on the menu which is fine. All the reviews which I am using are being re-formatted which is within wikivoyage conventions. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:19, 26 January 2007 (EST)

OK, but many of the reviews still sound very brochure-like - for example...Admire the Victorian Architecture, for The Mall retains much of its Raj-era charm....The central area of the mall, flanked by its half-timbered buildings, has always been, and remains its most fahionable area. Home to a profusion of restaurants... Don't you agree? If you re-format, you have do more than just change a few words, it has to be re-written. Anyway, I'm just letting you know, because if anyone finds that you have copied something, then definitely you'll banned, and there is nothing I can do about it. Take it easy

Listen, here's the original text. I have re-formatted it.

The Mall in Shimla is a classic example of Victorian Architecture. The half-timbered buildings in the central section of The Mall retain their Raj-era charm. This area is the poshest neighbourhood in the city, and houses a multitude of stylish restaurants, art galleries and shopping plazas.

P.S. Just gloss over the spellings, I tend to use British spellings which apparently isn't the wikivoyage norm.

I'm Done with See, Do, Eat & Drink I'll complete the Sleep Listings today evening, that is 12.30 GMT. And The Get Around is blank, Get In is too sparse.

(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 22:18, 26 January 2007 (EST)

In the See listings, the name and address should be followed by a full-stop, not a dash. I'm undoing your changes ok. Check up Project:Listings (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 07:32, 27 January 2007 (EST)
Sorry, windhorse, I must have sounded rude. Anyway, I added a bit to Buy and Contact. All the stuff which I've added now is in my own words, no copy-vio this time. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 04:38, 31 January 2007 (EST)

Hey wh, what's your name??[edit]

Er, windhorse, what's your real name and where are you from?? I'd still prefer calling you windhorse, I like the name. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 11:18, 31 January 2007 (EST)

Ha ha, nice joke. In fact, I was watching the film just half-an-hour ago on my DVD player!!! I'll call you Windhorse(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 12:23, 1 February 2007 (EST)
Changing it to "elegant", I must admit that it is a much better adjective for the Oberoi atmosphere. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 04:53, 6 February 2007 (EST)

Windsor[edit]

Thanks for the intro to the "Understand" section of Windsor. I wasn't quite sure how to tackle it and I was going to take the bland encyclopedic approach, but your intro solves the problem I had. -- (WT-en) Andrew H. (Sapphire) 20:14, 2 February 2007 (EST)

DOTM[edit]

Hi Daniel, thanks for all your input on the DotM page. It is very helpful...just one thought, however: We now have two US national parks following in successive months - ie Yosemite and Zion. I was just wondering that for the sake of diversity whether it would be better to separate them by adding a non-US destination in between. What do you think? Also, appreciate your work on the Cambridge article. It is encouraging me to linger there a little longer on future visits to the UK. WindHorse 09:24, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Thanks. Yes, I had realised that and I was going to wait for some more ideas before possibly separating them. I am not really qualified to know whther we could move Yosemite to April. We have had problems before of quite a few USA destinations as DOTM in nearby months.
I'll try to do some more work on Cambridge. I wouldn't usually push it so much, I just think that the alternatives are quite poor at the moment. -- (WT-en) DanielC 16:34, 7 February 2007 (EST)

China[edit]

Thanks for keeping me honest....:-) I really enjoyed my time in China and when I ran across the Wikivoyage pages for China and especially the DongBei area pages, I knew I needed to input what I know and learned. I have tried to listen to the input you and the others have given to stuff I've added and made changes accordingly. If you ever have questions, feel free to let me know and I will be happy to reply! Thank you[edit]

Thanks for adding the train schedule to Shimla#By train. You seem to be pretty well-up on Shimla, have you been there more than once?? (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage

Thanks. Regarding the Hindu respect section of Sacred sites, I feel that a brief explanation regarding alcohol, vegetarian food and suchlike needs to be given (we don't want tons of content that won't be useful for travellers). I'll try and help out on that. I'll be free for a few hours now (till about 6PM India time, it's 3PM now) so I'll try and complete the basics of all the sections. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 04:29, 2 March 2007 (EST)

For the Hindu section, under symbols, should we include symbols specific to certain Gods. (For eg, the chakra or spoked wheel symbolizes Vishnu, a modak, i.e. a kind of sweet better known as laddoo is the sign for Ganesh....). I think we should leave it at Om and the Swastika. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 04:29, 2 March 2007 (EST)

I'm adding a festivals after the understand bit list since that is very important. If you and the others don't like it, feel free to delete. I'll finish off the list and then start on the Islam and Sikh bits. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 04:55, 2 March 2007 (EST)
P.S. Why are we listing mosques instead of towns in the Islamic sites sec.
  • Jama Masjid in Delhi (incorrect)
  • Delhi - home to the notable Jama Masjid, one of the world's largest mosques (that's how the listings should be like, don't you agree??)

Hi, you there?[edit]

WindHorse I think you're online, if you are could you just post a message on my talk page. I've gotta discuss something important (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:25, 3 March 2007 (EST)

Ya thanks for responding so quickly. What festivals should I add under Hindu, the major ones or all that I can think of? And under symbols, are god-specific ones necessary? (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:29, 3 March 2007 (EST)

I added the points you mentioned under respect. could you just look through them and clean up if req?

Should I tabulate the train schedule in Shimla#By train? And should I also add a flight schedule to Shimla#By plane??

I've added the return timetable (after consulting Trains At A Glance) in the same format as yours. It looks neat as it is, so I'm not making it into a table. I've also added the flight schedule in a small table. Only the flights TO Chandigarh and Shimla are included. I copied the size from the Gangzhou article. Thanks. Take care — (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 07:38, 4 March 2007 (EST)

Thanks. The Chandigarh-Amritsar and Chandigarh-Leh flights seem to have been temoporarily suspended. Could you add that (Shimla#By plane). Am currently very busy districtifying Calcutta. If you are free, could you help out on that? Thanks (WT-en) Upamanyuwiki(Talk) • 06:08, 5 March 2007 (EST)

Thanks for everything[edit]

Back to Shimla[edit]

I only wrote the IATA codes for the air-routes but included their wikivoyage links. Here, take a look — Shimla#By plane

So if you click on IXC you'll get a link to the Chandigarh article. That's better than including the whole word Chandigarh, that'll take up more space. I did this mainly because some of the codes make no sense, IXC for Chandigarh, IXJ for Jammu, SLV for Shimla and so on... P.S. The Jagson Airlines site seems to be giving some trouble so I can't find the flight(s) to Kullu. As soon as I get the info, I'll update. Take care — (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel )•

It isn't a well-known airline. I came to know about it last month when I flew to Jaisalmer. Kolkata distrification[edit]

Park St hould come under Maidan, although Park Circus (the eastern end of Park St) should be in East Kolkata.

Basically, Maidan is bounded by (in clockwise direction from the North)

  1. Auckland Rd
  2. Esplanade Bus Terminus (the terminus and subway will be in Esplanade)
  3. The northern bit of Chowringhee (renamed Nehru Rd) till the Park St subway station
  4. Turns SE along Park St till Hungerford St, 100m East of the Camac St crossing
  5. Turns right at Hungerford St
  6. Heads south along Hungerford St till AJC Bose Rd crossing
  7. The whole of AJC Bose Rd
  8. Becomes Strand Rd
  9. North along Strand Rd till Auckland Rd

So the part of Park St which is west of Hungerford St i.e. approx.nos. 1 to 120 (since Hungerford St _|_ to Park St) falls within the Maidan district.

Sudder St will come under Esplanade.

Middleton Row will come under Maidan, so will Middleton St.

Park St east of Hungerford St (nos. 120 onwards) will come under Kolkata/East

I hope you've understood. BTW, fantstic work on the districtifying. ... (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 06:00, 9 March 2007 (EST)

It isn't complicated at all. If you take out a map of Cal and trace the route which I have drawn you'll realize that it's simple. You see, when one thinks of Park St one thinks of the shopping area (i.e. the western bit near the subway station). No Calcuttan will place Park St under Esplanade. The eastern bit of Park St is considered eastern kolkata so it should come in Kolkata/East. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 06:16, 9 March 2007 (EST)
Sorry for not replying. Had to rush to the loo. Ya, I hope that my explantion is clear. And you are 100% correct about the JL Nehru Rd n. of Park St = Esplanade and s of park st=Maidan bit. Thanks(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 06:36, 9 March 2007 (EST)

Tell me how to improve Shimla if anything is left. I want to clean it up since it's going to be DotM in a few months' time. And some feedback about Sacred Sites if possible....(on my talk page)(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 06:36, 9 March 2007 (EST)

You're welcome. Regarding Jains, I know a lot of stuff about Jainism, but most of it it encyclopedia-related and academic, and I don't have a clue how to include it in a travel guide. I'll post the info on your talk page tomorrow and see if you can twist the words around a bit so that it is appropriate for wikivoyage. My next big project is to get Bangalore sorted out (districtify it). I've posted a message on Wikipedia:Talk:Bangalore asking someone to propose a break-up. And I've added the festivals of all the religions now, see if you can mention some points under respect. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 11:06, 9 March 2007 (EST)

deindenting. Distinguishing the flights is already done, the table only includes the flights TO Chandigarh/Shimla, and the airport codes for both the destination and the origin are given. Golmud[edit]

Why did you compress the Get In (By Train and Bus) information for Golmud and leave off the locations of the train station and the bus station? I could understand doing this if the article had a lot more information but it is kind of empty. My rationale for doing what I did was to add a little volume to empty articles in the hopes that people will be willing to add info to an article that looks like it has some substance to it. (WT-en) Celticevergreen 01:34, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

I'm going to have to think about what you said regarding the expansion of the info, give me food for thought. Re: trains - specially built for the journey between the lower mainland cities and Lhasa, each train is pressurized from about xian or lanzhou up to lhasa so that as the train climbs the pressure increases in increments so us poor mortals can adjust to the elevation. Kind of like the pressureization of an airplane but over a long distance and a long time. Golmud is just a regular stop on the line to Lhasa. So only those who need to travel by bus will end up there because the train makes tibet easier to access. I have feeling that govt will make access to Tibet even more difficult so that you can only travel by airplane or bus. Makes it easier to know who is traveling there. (WT-en) Celticevergreen 00:04, 16 March 2007 (EDT)

Hindi version[edit]

Next month. I have hols from the 16th to the 29th. And once this is launched, there'll be loads of advantages -

  • I get to practice my Hindi, I had to choose between Hindi and Sanskrit for Grade 9 (begins this April) and I picked Sanskrit.
  • It'll benifit travellers in Northern India
  • It'll be the start of Indian language wikis
  • All the technical terms will help in my Sanskrit, my vocab will improve

Hi, windhorse. I am not sure if you know Chinese or not. In Chinese, "Qian" is an abbreviation of "Guizhou", and "Dongnan" means "Southeastern". I think Southeastern Guizhou is a direct translation of Guizhou.

Hi To. Yeah, I can read Chinese. The Southeastern Guizhou part I understood, but how about the 苗族侗族 part of the name? I guess these two races live within this southeastern region, and it is not Southeastern Guizhou + the place of the Miao and Dong people. Is that correct? If so, then the title is fine and a good translation. Thanks for your feedback. (WT-en) WindHorse 13:03, 18 March 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for your help. 苗族侗族 is a part of the official name. However, Chinese people seldom use the full name of the region. (WT-en) To 13:23, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

Pictures[edit]

Found a bunch of old photos from my trip to china and I scanned them and then posted. The Buddha is really cool. the Temple is really dark so I had to photoshop the image. The jade stands like about 12-15 feet tall and sits up on this pedestal. They had this viewing platform you paid to climb so you could be even with the jade. (WT-en) Celticevergreen 01:11, 19 March 2007 (EDT)

Actually its modern, kind of - the area is kind of a magnet for jade seekers. This piece of jade was found near Anshan in one of the outlying districts and when it was discovered to be the largest on record. the county government paid to have the best craftsman add the images, on both sides by the way. The Guanyin (I think that is what she is called) is really welldone.

Around the Guanyin are temples and other mountain scenery in miniture and also along the back.

Interesting that you guys find Bombay such a great place. Along with Delhi, it's one of the major cities that I feel the least attraction towards. Of the metros, I much prefer Kolkata and Bangalore. Maybe you guys can give me some tips on where to find the city's 'hidden' charm. -- Hey windhorse, you asked this q on Ravi's talk page. The point is that Bombay is a city which grows on you, it's all about 18?19?20? million people of different faiths, from different states who speak different languages, and yet the feeling of brotherhood among Bombayites is awesome. The city per se is not the main thing, it's the people that make it the most dynamic and cosmopolitain (and probably the coolest) city in India. Delhi is a horrible place -- it's full of uncouth people, most of whom are racist xenophobes. Kolkata is awesome (if you can look beyond the slums and muck that line the streets) and Bangalore is a decent place. Deletions, etc.[edit]

No worries I appreciate what you're doing and I bow to your superior knowledge of practices here on Wikivoyage. In retrospect, it makes sense that the average traveler would not need to have the populations of all cities in a region listed in an overview, whereas a simple list of said cities might be helpful. Clearly, the scope of this guide is for the use of a traveler to the region, and I agree that the political situation is necessary to be explained, but not the emphasis. I think that your edits to the article are completely appropriate and I have no interest in challenging or changing them. Thanks for your assistance and tutelage. I plan on editing the article further to reflect the standards and practices of Wikivoyage. -(WT-en) Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 18:48, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Thank you for your kind words. The Krasnoyarsk Krai issue is complicated and I'm not sure that the solution I am now employing is optimal. The three purple regions on the map were formerly separate Federal Districts (Krasnoyarsk Krai, Evenkia, and Taymyria), but just recently were united under the jurisdiction of Krasnoyarsk Krai, maintaining some degree of autonomy for Evenkia and Taymyria. So I have grouped them all under the name Krasnoyarsk Krai, while using the name Krasnoyarsk (region) for the smaller territory formerly known as Krasnoyarsk Krai.

I think it makes sense to still keep these destinations separate, since they constitute very different and vast destinations. I also think it is useful to group them together as Siberia's northern region, since a traveler would likely need to go through "Krasnoyarsk (region)" to get to the other two. But this is clearly a confusing layout. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for altering names to make these distinctions less confusing! --(WT-en) Peterfitzgerald Talk 03:49, 7 May 2007 (EDT)

Link format on disambiguation pages[edit]

Hi

Re this revert: [2] - usually, links on disambiguation pages show the "full" disambiguated article name - e.g. [[Georgia (state)]]), as opposed to [[Georgia (state)|Georgia]]. Any thoughts on why that's not a good idea on disambiguation pages? ~ 60.51.204.185 11:02, 12 May 2007 (EDT)

Hi, sorry I didn't explain earlier. The suffix seemed superfluous as Louisville was already identified as being in the 'United States of America', and so obviously 'the Georgia' that it was linked to was not the country in the Caucasus region, and only other Georgia in the US is a small town in Vermont. In addition, adding the suffix only to the Georgia link and not to the other states listed seemed somehow un..un... un... unbalanced (???). Anyway, I hope that explanation is clear and the reasons given acceptable to you. Apologies for not explaining beforehand. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:41, 12 May 2007 (EDT)
I think it's much better, in the case of disambiguation pages, for all links to show the "full" article name. ~ 60.51.204.185 11:52, 12 May 2007 (EDT)
There seems to be no policy on this. Maybe you can raise the issue here: Project:Disambiguation pages and try to gain a consensus. It would be good to have a standard policy for future reference (WT-en) WindHorse 12:07, 12 May 2007 (EDT)

Went back to those pages you added Tibetan to and all I see are those boxes in a row. Same thing happens when I look at hotel or activity listings written the wikivoyage way. The word 'tel" and 'fax' no longer show up when I view a page. I just get a box in that space. Any ideas? I have my IE set for utf-8 language. (WT-en) Celticevergreen 01:29, 1 June 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the update! (WT-en) Celticevergreen 22:33, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
I get the same thing in both cases when I'm using Firefox, but everything works fine for me in Safari (I'm on a Mac). I read somewhere that Firefox can't handle certain alphabets, perhaps IE is the same way? In the listings, we've got new listing templates that are in use on some pages, and the box your seeing is supposed to be a telephone icon. I don't know why those don't render properly in all browsers. Curious about it myself. WindHorse, enlighten us? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 02:58, 1 June 2007 (EDT)

Nepal regions[edit]

Hi Windhorse,

The government's super-zones must have been set up for administrative convenience. They lack geographic, historical & cultural validity. Of course travelers might be better equipped to deal with the bureaucracy if they are somewhat familiar with the government's schema. So let's leave this scheme alone for bureaucratic purposes.

However for other travel purposes it made more sense to me to organize things by drainage basins: (1) Kosi in the east, (2) Bagmati (Kathmandu Valley), (3) most of the Gandaki basin, (4) (west) Rapti and Babai basins and stuff north of them (technically in the Gandaki and Karnali/Bheri basins) through the Dhaulagiri range and valleys behind, and (5) the remainder of the Karnali/Bheri basin and Mahakali up to the Indian border. Perhaps these could be called Kosi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Rapti-Dhaulagiri, and Karnali-Mahakali Regions.

For travel purposes it seemed really unnatural to divide Mid-West and Far-west at the Karnali River! Nepalis and trekkers quickly get across rivers via primitive ferryboats or bridges. Major drainage divides -- these tend to be high ridges -- make more sense than rivers as boundaries. Getting up to these ridges can be a serious hike! Nepalis are as practical as anyone else and try to avoid it, thus drainage divides are cultural divides too.

The way I did it has more historical validity too. Khas peoples speaking the progenitor of Nepali developed their core identity in the Mahakali and Karnali/Bheri basins. They detoured around the Babai/Rapti basins into the Gandaki basin to settle and grow rice. Prithvi Narayan appears there in the 1700s and heads east to conquer the Bagmati region (Kathmandu valley), then the Kosi region beyond. He or his heirs also consolidate the rest of the country -- the "Chaubisi" (24 principality confederation of the Gandaki basin) and the "Baisi" (22 principality confederation of the Karnali/Bheri basin).

Each river-oriented region can also be subdivided by elevation into Terai (Madesi and Tharu), Lower hills (Brahman-Chhetri), upper hills (Magar, Gurung, Tamang, etc.), then Bhote (Tibetan). It may be a little complicated, but travelers exposed to this stuff will be better prepared for "ground truth".

- David

Hi David - that all sounds good to me. I'll place your comments on the Nepal Talk page and then may I request you to rearrange accordingly. (sorry I can't help as I'm not at all familiar with anywhere west of Pokhara). (WT-en) WindHorse 01:04, 6 June 2007 (EDT)
Hi Windhorse - Pretty good fit! My own expertise starts about at Pokhara and runs west into Rapti Zone and north to Dhorpatan and Jomosom. Unfortunately I never got very far into the Karnali-Bheri basin. Hopefully someone else will come along and work on that.
See what you think of the north-south geographical zones I added. This time I didn't mess with what was already there. I didn't work on the river basin aspect but will later, again leaving the big administrative regions alone
I added a few cities and destinations and some "respect" paragraphs. Possibly the food section could be expanded to explain how cuisine varies from north to south and by ethnicity. So far we are only hinting at those dimensions.
I'm also thinking it would might be good to add a discussion of ethnic groups, at least as much as travelers need and can absorb.
- David (I'm not logged in, but just click on the link higher up if you want to get to my talk page).

More on Regions[edit]

Maybe the administrative regions can be tossed out now. Development workers need to know them; travelers don't.

We have a matrix: south to north by elevation; west to east by river basins.

Most treks are along along rivers and streams that flow south. Going east or west usually means going against the grain with a lot more up and down, with some exceptions. A trekker chooses a region along the east-west axis, then decides how low to start and how high to go.

Having explained the south-to-north geography and the west-to-east flow of history, maybe we need to go back and talk about destinations and hubs with transportation, lodging, health care, etc., and what ethnic groups found in each 'cell' of the matrix.

  • Karnali-Bheri Basin
    • Outer Terai
      • Nepalganj is main city
      • wildlife preserve
      • ethnic groups: (Rana) Tharu, Muslims, Others? (I think they speak Hindi but probably some other dialects)
    • Hills
      • Surkhet
      • ethnic groups: Pahari (Bahun and Chhetri), Thakuri (the King's caste), Kham Magar
    • Himalaya
      • Jumla is gateway
      • Rara Lake
      • Kanjiroba Himal
      • ethnic groups: Khas and Bhote (Tibetan)
    • Trans-Himalaya
      • Humla
      • Dolpo
      • access to Mt. Kailas in Tibet
      • ethnic groups: Bhote
    • note that we have omitted extreme west: Main stem of Mahakali River is Nepal's western border, in its own basin. Dhangarhi and Mahendranagar are Terai cities. (I don't know much about this region)
  • Rapti and Babai Basins
    • border follows Siwaliks, so no outer Terai.
    • Inner Terai is Dang and Deukhuri valleys. Spending time with Thaurus would be the main tourist attraction, probably not in the hot season (May-June). Both are scenic in an unconventional way. The Mahabharat Range rises abruptly north of Dang. Deukhuri has a magical Garden of Eden quality.
    • Hills
      • Rolpa district was the flashpoint of the Maobadi rebellion and is still a stronghold. Adventure tourism featuring battle sites, 'liberated' areas and lifestyle of Kham nationality could develop.
      • ethnic groups: Pahari, service castes, Newar, Kumal, Kham, Magar
  • Gandaki Basin
    • Outer Terai
      • cities: Bhairawa: transportation hub and border crossing
      • Butwal - possible stopping point on east-west highway, buses to Tansen, Pokhara etc.
      • Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace
      • Terai ethnic groups: extension of Bihar. Bhojpuri is important dialect.
    • Inner Terai is Chitwan with game preserve. Narayani river has two types of crocodiles, birds, fish, large alluvial zone.
    • Hills
      • Tansen on top of Mahabharat Range
        • trade route from Tansen down to Gandaki River has foot traffic from about a dozen ethnic groups, lined with teashops.
      • Ridi Bazaar on Gandaki RIver an important pilgrimage site, possible mela (fair), Rana palace
      • Pokhara
      • Gorkha
      • Nuwakot - fortified city that was Prithvi Narayan's first conquest
      • ethnic groups: Pahari, service castes, Magar
    • Himalaya and Transhimalaya
      • Jomosom trek along Kaligandaki between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna with max. elevation about 9,000', OK in early spring or late fall when too cold to go high. Extensions north to Mustang or east to Muktinath
      • loop trek around Annapurnas
      • trek to base of Manaslu
      • Lantang
      • Gosainkund
      • ethnic groups: Gurung, Tamang, Thakali, Panchgaonle,Manangi, Bhote
  • Bagmati basin
    • Outer Terai - Birganj - border crossing point, transportation hub (air, road)
    • Kathmandu valley (Bagmati basin)
      • Kathmandu - capital, tourist district, historic districts
      • Patan - historic Newar city, crafts center
      • Bhaktapur - architecture
      • Banepa - Newar city on eastern edge of valley
      • Religious sites around valley (Buddhist Stupa, Dakshinkali, Pashupatinath
      • Rana palaces
      • ethnic groups: Newar, Tibetan refugees
  • Kosi basin (I don't know this area very well) It has outer terai, possibly some small inner terai valleys, hills, himalayas. No transhimalayan zone. Tibet border mostly follows crest of himalayas. Ethnic groups include Sherpas in high mountains, Rai and Limbu in hills, Tharu in inner Terai, Maithil (Mithla) in outer Terai, possibly Bengalis in far east.

Probably text about regions can parsed down some. However after looking at the India article, I don't think the Nepal article has gotten too long yet. Bhutan is a much simpler country to write about than Nepal, also I think you need to be on a guided tour spending big bucks. Travelers probably can't design own itineraries.

Eventually the Nepal article will probably grow until it needs to spin off regional articles. The main article still needs to set the stage with geographical superstructure: elevation zones and river basins.

I really enjoy reading some of these articles. That one seems like a topic for "Survivor". I got tired just thinking about the physical aspects of that trip. Hi WindHorse. You've just reverted a change I made to the Republic of Ireland article, but I think in error (see this diff).

The change I made was to the ===by plane=== sub-section of ==Get Around==, whereby I removed a couple of sentences relating to travelling to and from Derry and belfast airports in Northern Ireland as irrelevant to this section. They are already mentioned in the ==Get In== portion of this article, and they do not relate to getting around in the Republic of Ireland. I left the statements regarding travel to Cork, Etc. As I'm only a new editor in wikivoyage, I don't want to get into an edit war or anything, so perhaps you'd have a look and return my edits. Just a quick note to say that yeah, the link you added prompted my message on Project:Local spam blacklist, but I've been meaning to leave a note there for a while since a lot of people use the blacklist as a way of enforcing the external links policy. Doing so is fine in tough cases, but after a few months a person of lesser-than-average intelligence like myself is left wondering why some links are on the list. doing-unspeakable-things-with-monkeys.com is a pretty obvious spam link, but best-hotels.com may not be, and having a reminder as to why it's there is a good thing :) -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:11, 2 July 2007 (EDT)

Ireland[edit]

Thanks for moving the discussion about moving Republic of Ireland to Ireland. I judged that it was time to plunge forward on this because that discussion had been up there for a full month, no one had objected, and I had solicited comments in the pub. So I do hope that no one will take potshots at all the work I have been doing to overhaul the regional hierarchy and fix the links pointing to Republic of Ireland. But in any rate, thanks for making sure the discussion is properly archived where people can find it.

On my computer screen, I don't see any of the maps covering up text. Are you referring to the regions map? If the quickbar is forcing the regions map over the text, we can use the html code <br clear="all" /> to force the entire regions section below the quickbar, as it is done on Azerbaijan. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:03, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Oh no. I see that you did object on the Talk:Ireland page, whereas I was just looking at the ongoing discussion at Talk:Republic of Ireland. This is frustrating. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:07, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
Well, to me the very fact that this mistake occurred is another reason to consolidate our Ireland pages—no one was even sure where the discussion should be taking place. To address the point that you raised, I would be surprised to see differing visa regulations between Northern Ireland and Ireland, since there are no border controls between the two countries; you can drive straight from Belfast to Dublin without ever showing a passport. Also, I would not at all object to your proposal (alas, had I seen it) to move the Republic of Ireland article to Ireland (republic), but I really don't want to have to go back and change the 200 odd links to the country page again! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:11, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
Hmm. Perhaps we could move to "Ireland (republic)" and get someone to write a bot to fix the links? Sorry to leave so many rapid-fire comments on your page, I'm just feeling very frustrated that I did not see your comment earlier. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:15, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Ah, I am glad to hear you are not objecting outright to the move. I will try to make it very clear that when we say "Ireland" we are referring to the island rather than the country. As it was before, Northern Ireland was still included in the Irish hierarchy, but was buried in the Ulster region. I will "fix" the quickbar problem with Ireland, but it will not look very pretty. Would you please do me a favor and check to see whether the same problem occurs on your display for the United States of America article. Thanks! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:27, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. I guess it's some kind of bug. -- (WT-en) Kleinzach 23:06, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Charitable Ads[edit]

Based on your previous suggestion, I have continued to advocate charitable ads. IB has told me that they have no objections, as long as a community consensus on the issue can be developed. Maybe we can help restore a few peoples vision. I thought that well worth the time to look into. Will keep you updated. I miss your contributions and wisdom. Hi, thanks for the feedback. I agree that both you and (WT-en) cacahuate have a valid point there. But I was only trying to put the list in a more orderly fashion...at least it looks neater now, don't you agree? As to the Bhutan model, it would work here only if we deleted the detailed description of each festival...do you think that's a good idea? Open to suggestions. OtBP[edit]

I think I fixed it correctly—I've never actually worked on the English version Main Page! And is an administrator necessary to update the OtBP? It seemed that what I did would be possible for any registered user, so I worry that I left something out. Anyway, it's always nice to see you around on the site, since the site always benefits from your work! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:15, 17 September 2008 (EDT)

Ulleungdo[edit]

Hello, Thanks for your message. I reverted the edit because the ferry rides are tours and not considered public transportation. I guess in practice it's a good way to get around the lake but their priority is to guide people on the places they are stopping. I put that information on the Do section.

BTW, I did put in an explanation on the summary for that edit.

Regards, Paula

Cheers to you.

Heyy![edit]

Hi WindHorse! I want to thank you for you're ideas in the Travellers' Pub! Keep smiling, (WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 11:41, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

Patna[edit]

Hey WindHorse,

Request you to Update India Page on wikivoyage-(section coming from Nepal)

Patna has direct road connectivity with Kathmandu & Thimpu via Raxaul and Jogbani on India/Nepal border many travellers from Nepal/Bhutan/India use these roads to get in, Patna is a vital link as it is the state capital well connected with Road/Rail/Air with other part of India.

Patna is the transit route to/fro Bodhgaya(from these countries like Nepal/Bhutan),

Hope you will update.

Thanks

Piyush Nimiyar

Bihar[edit]

Hi WindHorse,

Request you to change the following thing on Bihar page, as UttarPradesh is in the west of Bihar(but wrongly mention East), West bengal is in the East(Wrongly mention West), or I will make to required modification pls. revert back.

Need to mention one more thingh about Patna- Patna Museum is the state museum of Bihar. It was built by the British during the British Raj in the year 1917 to house the historical artefacts found in the vicinity of Patna [2]. It is built in the style of Mughal and Rajput architecture. It is called the Jadu Ghar by locals.

It is a multi-purpose museum. The items on display include archaeological objects, coins, art objects, paintings, instruments, textiles, paintings, thankas, bronze images and sculptures and terracotta images of Hindu and Buddhist artists.[3]

It has a rare collection of paintings of British period depicting day to day life and a fine collection related to the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad.

The fossil of a tree said to be more than 200 million years old is on display at the museum.[4]

Also on display is a casket unearthed at the Relic Stupa of Vaishali, which is said to contain the sacred ashes (relics) of Buddha.

Didarganj Yakshi is the most prized collection of this museum.[5]

It is one of the richest museum in India.

Hi WindHorse[edit]

Is't it OK to copy information from free sources like wikipedia? (WT-en) Manoj nav 12:33, 4 December 2008 (EST)

Thanks for the welcome[edit]

Hi there! I realise that it would be a waste of time to duplicate lots of information. I thought it might be worthwhile having a region article on the Swansea Bay area because most people wouldn't know about the areas surrounding Swansea and just search for Swansea. There are quite a few places worth visiting that are just outside the city proper and I think they are worth a mention. I did mention in the article that it is just about highlights of the surrounding area and it is better to view the main town town and city articles for more details. Is this OK? Do you think there is any detail I should remove from the article? Thanks for your advice (WT-en) Windmill 07:40, 12 January 2009 (EST)

Bhutan map[edit]

Hey WindHorse, I realize you haven't had as much time to spend on Wikivoyage lately, but perhaps you might like to look over the Bhutan map I made? I would very much appreciate your input, and any guidance you might have for finding additional sources of maps that I could use to make it more accurate, or perhaps add more content like park/reserve boundaries. These folks have a nice protected areas map [5], but it is not free re-use. On a broader note, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I hope you'll keep coming back—the site benefits greatly from your work here! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:10, 2 January 2010 (EST)

Kolkata districts[edit]

Hey, as you seem familiar with Kolkata and have been discussing the district breakup before, maybe you can help to finally get the district thing cleared up and mapped? Would be great if you could spare some minutes >> Talk:Kolkata! (WT-en) Sebindi 15:29, 17 April 2010 (EDT)
