Hello, Paulboht! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you want some practice editing, please do so on our graffiti wall. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. If you want to contribute with information about the place where you live, see Wikivoyage:Welcome, locals.

Thank you for your contributions to articles in Nigeria! Also take a look at template {{mapframe}} which makes it easier to add maps to city articles. Thanks. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 12:01, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Empty articles

[edit]

Paul, you've just created many articles with no content, or that just have subheadings with no information. Are you planning to add travel content to them? If not, I will delete them as they provide no benefit to readers. Please let me know what you plan to do. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 02:09, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Paul, the articles you've just created, Ode remo and Ethiope, are of no use to travellers. Are you going to add travel content to them? If not, they should be deleted, and you are wasting your time here. Ground Zero (talk) 12:03, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would love to see travel content added to them, but if that doesn't happen, I will start deleting them soon. Ground Zero (talk) 12:26, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
You can delete it for all i call. What sort of threat is that?
Do you know if i'm making my research on those articles i created? Paulboht (talk) 19:37, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
How will you say i'm wasting my time when i know what i'm doing?. You need to exercise some patience and not jump into conclusion. Thanks Paulboht (talk) 19:36, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, Ethiope seems to be an article about a river. If that's correct, unless you mean to make it a viable itinerary article, per what is an article, we don't have articles about rivers. So what are your plans for that article? I'm sorry you were annoyed at being questioned on your editing process, but this is a site with collective authorship, and we don't know what your editing process is like or what your end goals are for the articles you create unless you either tell us (at least in edit summaries if nothing else) or make it evident through your actions. Sure, we can be more patient, but if you think about it from the viewpoint of someone who's patrolling recent edits, when someone creates a number of blank articles, it's understandable for them to wonder what the followup will be. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:10, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why are you so focused on what I'm doing? This is a volunteer work and I will suggest you encourage rather than being an authoritarian. Well, if you read it well and understood what i added, you'll see that it's a place to visit and it's still a work in progress. Thanks. Paulboht (talk) 21:25, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I absolutely do encourage you and everyone else to keep working, but I suggest you not call me an authoritarian when I'm just asking you questions. I will be delighted to give you latitude to do the work you plan on doing, but what you seem to think is authoritarian is to engage in discussions, rather than treating a wiki as a place for purely independent individual work. It would be better if you would respond to questions. So, then, is the Ethiope article about a river, or is it about a town? Because right now, what you added is only about a river. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:42, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Paulboht, if you are going to work on these articles, then I will leave them alone. I have been trying to find out what your plans are for these articles, but you have not responded, and have continued creating articles without content. Unfortunately, we have had a lot of experience with people who have created new articles and then stopped editing. I am glad to hear that you are not one of those people. It would best if you would focus on the articles that you have already created before creating any new ones. I look forward to learning more about these places from you. Ground Zero (talk) 01:06, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Paul, the articles Jimba Oja and Gambari you created on 2021/12/28 still have nothing but the skeletons which don't even identify where they are. Are you going to work on them? If not, I will nominate them for deletion. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:15, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
The same with Lisa, Ojoolu, Jagunna and Abeloju. It's almost a month since 2021/12/28, and you've had ample time to work on them. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:32, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Guidelines against touting

[edit]

Hi, and sorry to bother you, but if this was your first edit, I would post a touting warning on your user talk page. Of course I know you are not here to advertise, but nevertheless, in that edit, you did. So please read the guidelines at Wikivoyage:Don't tout, some of which might be surprising, and in case you copied and pasted promotional information from the hotel's site, keep Wikivoyage:Copyleft in mind, too. I'll revert that edit now, and please repost the listing without promotional language.

Thanks and all the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:07, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't really advertising. What i did there was wrote about the hotel to help travelers to understand more about the hotel. It may seem like an advert like you noted but I feel you should give me the time to rectify it before you delete it. Paulboht (talk) 14:29, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
You have time. Your text is on the left side of the difference I linked for you above. Please edit the text. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:21, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Time formatting

[edit]

Hi Paul, according to Talk:Nigeria, the 12-hour clock should be used for articles about Nigeria. I've fixed this one up, but can you please use the 12-hour clock in future. Regards, --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:02, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Paul, please use the 12-hour clock (e.g., 9AM-noon, 5PM-midnight), not the 24-hour clock in Nigeria articles. Thank you. Ground Zero (talk) 12:54, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Alright. Thank you. Paulboht (talk) 13:04, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pings

[edit]

Hello Paul, can you please answer the pings given to you in Talk:Uselu. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:06, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Don't be a fool, Ground Zero sorted it out already. Thank you. Paulboht (talk) 19:06, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Paul: I sorted it out after SHB2000 posted this. We try to keep a friendly community here. Name-calling is not acceptable. You are wrong, and you owe SHB2000 an apology. Ground Zero (talk) 19:35, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oh, how was i wrong and why do I have to apologize?. I was only explaining to SHB.... that you sorted it out already. Paulboht (talk) 21:29, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

You could have pointed that out without calling him a "fool". Name-calling won't convince anyone of your position, and just makes Wikivoyage a nastier place. Try reading what you wrote without "Don't be a fool". It gets your message across in a much more effective way. Ground Zero (talk) 22:37, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well, i wouldn't have used that word if he didn't use the word "bullheaded" for me. Since he used that, i thought those words are normal and a means of communicating with one another. Paulboht (talk) 12:40, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

He did apologize for that, but it is a reasonable way of describing someone who doesn't respond to direct questions. This is a collaborative project. It is hard to collaborate without someone who ignores questions from other people. Ground Zero (talk) 19:48, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

I noticed you copied some text off this website and I had to remove the offending material here. Please don't do that as this is not allowed as it's basically stealing someone else's work and claiming it as your own. Please take the time to read Wikivoyage:Copyleft. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 22:38, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

You also seemed to have copied some text from this website as well. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 22:48, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yes, i did that to have travelers have idea of what they want to get. However, i stopped inputting such in my subsequent contents when I got a comment that it isn't allowed. Paulboht (talk) 12:25, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Okay, if you're aware of it and won't do it again, then it's fine. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 12:33, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

That won't happen again. Paulboht (talk) 12:38, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi, User:Paulboht. Have you been reading c:User talk:Paulboht? Have you been uploading copyrighted photos by others to Commons without permission? It looks like all your uploads are being deleted, so if they are your own work, you might want to defend them in the deletion nomination threads that are linked on your Commons user talk page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:54, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I speedied them as they copied off several websites, and they've now been deleted by KoH. The last two nominated by @King of Hearts: haven't been speedied as whether it's a copyvio is unknown. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:01, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Alright. Paulboht (talk) 12:10, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Alright what? Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:03, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Should I be the one to explain why you deleted the content?. I had to respond to the notification given about the deletion so it won't be like i ignored it like i was accused of always ignoring pings. Paulboht (talk) 22:55, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
uhm, you still haven't responded here. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 23:06, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
[Edit conflict] Which content did I delete? How about explaining why you are just grabbing copyrighted photos and uploading them to Commons, and then ignoring the deletion nomination threads and your user talk page there? Have you stopped doing that? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:07, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oh, i didn't know i was supposed to respond to that. I thought since it was flagged, it was deleted already. I don't like the manner at which you'll take things like I'm being paid to do these things or like you employed me. I care so much to contribute to open knowledge but not at the expense of my personal stuffs. Sometimes i see you pings as rude and like you're talking to your surbodinate. Paulboht (talk) 20:19, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Stop talking about being paid. None of us are paid. And no-one is subordinate; we're supposed to be collaborating here. Uploading copyrighted photos is unhelpful. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:25, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
First of all, as I said to you before, none of us are paid, including stewards. Secondly, this is a collaborative project. Unless you choose to turn off pings, pings are a means of communication. Third of all, the only reason why I, Ikan and Ground Zero have all been pinging you is because we need your input. Fourth of all, as Ikan said, grabbing photos off the web and uploading them to commons claiming them as yours is unhelpful and can stir legal trouble. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 21:27, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Not to mention the issues with your civility as well. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 21:44, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

If you want to complain about my civility, your ill-mannered way of using words caused it. If you had not used those words for me, i would be polite enough to reason with you and listen to your corrections or comments. It's almost my first time understanding the interface as i barely edit. Probably you're getting it wrong as to whether I'm all in on the contest and my focus is majorly on the prizes. If i win anything, it's to my benefit but I'm learning as well as contributing. I don't know if you observed it or not, i have been more responsive than before because now I understand that i have to check my notifications whether it favours me or not. This is where I'll say you have issue of being civil because if not, you would have noticed. Paulboht (talk) 06:54, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm not going to have a go at you here, but as you yourself say, your focus is majorly on the prizes. While I respect your focus on the prize, at Wikivoyage, the traveller comes first. The empty articles you created earlier do not serve the traveller.
As you seem to deny the fact that your civility is not a problem, I could go on, but just some points:
  • You called Ikan Kekek an "authoritarian" well before I had dialogue with you. You never apologized for that, nor did you even answer their question
  • You also called me a "fool". I recognize that I did use the term "bullheadedly", I apologized for that. Also, I did not call you "bullheadedly", I described your actions as "bullheadedly". I apologize again if you want another apology.
  • When Ground Zero called out on your empty articles, you called that a threat.
I could go on for hours. I'll stop it there. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:19, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Well, i could see you read what you felt like reading. To be clear, my focus were not primarily on the prizes as you quoted rather, it is secondary.
Like you apologized, i also apologize for the offensive words i used but I will implore you guys to be more civil when addressing issues.
It could be that you were frustrated about my actions but I can assure you that it was due to the fact that i didn't understand the interface like i do now and the frustration of getting things done on time so I can handle other personal stuffs. You didn't consider what i could be facing which caused all the rifts.
Once again, i apologize for everything and I hope we will be more civil on subsequent conversations. Paulboht (talk) 07:40, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
For my part, I accept your explanation and feel like we're good. Thanks. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:12, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ditto as Ikan. If you didn't know, there's a useful explanation on how to use the interface here. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:16, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I will check it. Thanks Paulboht (talk) 08:27, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
There is also w:Help:Wikitext from Wikipedia and so does v:Help:Wiki markup examples from Wikiversity. Not sure if Wikibooks has one, but if it doesn't, I'd be surprised as Wikibooks' main job is to provide guide books ;-) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 22:34, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your understanding. Paulboht (talk) 08:28, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Paul. I will also double check my posts to you to make sure that I am being as civil as possible. The most effective way of collaborating is communicating with each other, and I hope that we can work together better from now on. Ground Zero (talk) 13:14, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I appreciate everyone of you for your understanding. Thanks Paulboht (talk) 08:11, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Meaning of "Njobbore is in Yola"

[edit]

Hi, Paulboht. I invite your input at Talk:Njobbore, because I'm confused by what "Njobbore is in Yola" means, and the breadcrumb hierarchy of Njobbore needs to be fixed. Let me know if you'd like an explanation of Wikivoyage:Breadcrumb navigation, but it's basically how this site is organized, with cities defined in "IsPartOf" codes at the end of the article as being part of the next larger region (in Nigeria, generally if not always a state), which is part of the next higher region (South South Nigeria or whatever), country, etc.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:26, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I will make clarification on that. Njobbore is a city in Yola State, Nigeria. Paulboht (talk) 06:12, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. So it seems like there should be an article for Yola State that this article should be breadcrumbed to, but I'm confused, because this is what is in the article for Yola city: "Yola (Fulfulde: Ƴoola) is the capital of Adamawa State..." Also, I intentionally changed the listing for Yola Airport to this, because it's not in Njobbore. It's most convenient to have a full listing for an airport in only one article, the article for the nearest city, and to link to that in articles for other places the airport serves. At least Njobbore is pretty close to the airport, but the problem that crops up is that geocoded listings show on each article's map, so they skew the map and usually make it difficult to see the city that's the subject of the article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm confused Wikipedia lacks an article on Yola state and any search for "Yola State" just returns the city. (c.c @Ikan Kekek:) Tai123.123 (talk) 06:28, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I should create an article on Yola State. Thanks for the observation Ikan. Paulboht (talk) 07:14, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
But can’t find anything about Yola state when I search? Can I see a source that it exists? Tai123.123 (talk) 07:15, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please refer to the previous messages. Thanks Paulboht (talk) 07:17, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
You might consider editing Wikipedia, too. w:States of Nigeria shows Adamawa State but no Yola State. You would need a citation from a source to edit the Wikipedia article to add another state and also to create a new article for Yola State. However, w:Yola shows that there is w:Yola North, a Local Government Area of Adamawa State and also w:Yola South, also a Local Government Area of Adamawa State. I guess this was recently changed? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:57, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I made a mistake, Yola is the capital of Adamawa State. I will effect the correction. Thank you Paulboht (talk) 11:54, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
No problem, and thank you! Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:02, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Internally copying within articles

[edit]

Hi Paul, hope you're doing well.

I'm not sure if you read my message on Talk:Takie, but anyway, I'll message you here. I and Ground Zero have recently noticed you have internally copied within Wikivoyage without giving attribution. As per the CC-BY SA 3.0 license, this would mean that it is a copyright violation as no attribution was given. I speedy merged them, as a) it was a copyvio and b) duplication causes SEO issues, and doesn't really serve the traveller. However, if you do want to internally copy something within Wikivoyage, here's what you can do:

  • In an edit summary, mention "Add from [[name of article]] (most preferred method)
  • If you have forgotten to do that, you can either do the following
    • Mention on the talk page that x-diff is from [[name of article]] and linking the diff(s) (most preferred method)
    • Put in invisible text that x-diff is from [name of article]. However, this isn't the best option, as the attribution is not clearly given

However going forward, may I ask that you give us a list of articles where you have done such? It would be tedious to manually go thru a list of the articles you've worked on, and so I'd appreciate your cooperation with this. Also, what I said on Talk:Takie still applies.

If you want to know more about the license info, this guide on creativecommons.org has some good and explanatory information about the license. Also read Wikivoyage:Copyleft.

Thank you, --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 06:34, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I didn't intentionally ignore you chats. I will effect the points made. Thank you Paulboht (talk) 05:47, 3 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Paul, due to the fact that some of the articles you've created have been internally copied with no attribution, there is a proposal to delete the ones that have internally copied at vfd. Thank you. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:38, 25 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
