Wikivoyage is a city in the Wikimedia universe.

Users

[edit]

There are hundreds of Wikivoyagers. Here are nine of the best:

  • Nah, we'd better not...

Understand

[edit]
Indeed the whole world (plus the Moon!) fits into Wikivoyage

Established by Evan the Great in 2003 two years after Wikipedia, Wikivoyage was first known by the name Wikitravel. A truly multicultural place, it attracted - and still attracts - inhabitants from around the world. The city is subdivided in several city districts according to the languages spoken by the inhabitants, though it's not uncommon for inhabitants to have a home in more than one district.

Around 2006, the German district declared independence and renamed itself Wikivoyage, after the IB party rose to power. The rest of the city districts followed suit in 2012. Since that, the old name refers to the caves deep below Wikivoyage.

Today it is a city of more than two million inhabitants, of which just about 600 are living there. The rest are of course out travelling!

You need Internet access to get to Wikivoyage; using your computer, smartphone, tablet or similar device.

Actually, if you're reading this, you are already here - welcome!

Get around

[edit]

There are several ways to get around Wikivoyage. Links allow you to access related places and topics, Search can get you even further in the blink of an eye if you know where you want to go, and if you don't, you can try Special:Random.

Talk

[edit]

Wikivoyage has 25 official languages, but they are spoken in different towns, called subdomains. English, German, Polish and Italian are the largest four. Swedish and Finnish could be massive, but they prefer writing in English.

Jargon

[edit]
Swap WV the other way around to get the logo of a certain car brand

Like any closed community, Wikivoyagers employ an extensive list of "cool" buzzwords in order to intimidate newcomers. Here's a handy guide with definitions:

  • 7±2 - Because lists of ten smell too strongly of the metric system.
  • Admins - Powerrrr!
  • Block – jail time.
  • Bureaucrats - UNLIMITED POWWERRRR!
  • City - Any hamlet with a motel, apparently.
  • Copyleft - The leftie wokey-cokey version of copyright. A kinder, gentler way of unleashing the lawyers.
  • Disambig - A list of 20 redlinks and one real article.
  • Don't tout - So you have chosen death.
  • Guide article - Has been languishing in Starnom for 3 years
  • Outline article - Hey, I wrote an intro, remembered most of the headings, and cropped a photo of our local power station to the wrong dimensions for a pagebanner. What more do you want?
  • Plunge forward - ALL CHANGES MUST BE DISCUSSED ON THE TALK PAGE!!!!!!!!
  • Rollback - For when edit summaries and talking are just too much bother.
  • Respect - Sweeping statements, circular discussions, and edit wars are here.
  • SEO - Get your thesaurus out, lads.
  • Slush pile - Where dreams go to die. NEXT!
  • Star article - The pinnacle of Wikivoyaging excellence. Definitely doesn't scream "I have no social life or job".
  • Stub articles - Probably a 10-year-old's school project.
  • TTCF - The travel(l)er comes first. Our guiding principle, golden rule, first commandment. Sometimes awkwardly rephrased as the "The voyager comes first", in order to put distance between ourselves and the Website That Must Not Be Named.
  • Usable articles - Potluck! Could be anything from "essentially complete" to "essentially incomplete".
  • The Travellers' Pub - The place where everybody wants to make a mess but nobody wants to sweep. As ever, the French version sounds way classier: Le Café des Voyageurs. Mais oui.
  • WV - If you have to ask, you probably deserve to be shibbolethed back to Fandom Wiki – or Wikiversity.

Leng Buai Ia Shrine in Bangkok/Yaowarat and Phahurat, an article with Star status

Beautifully written star articles that make you believe you're visiting the place even if you're just looking at a screen. Blank articles about things that you know a thing or two or even a lot about. And everything in between, including previous Destinations of the month.

Do

[edit]
  • Edit articles: add information, update and copyedit them, add photos, remove spam, organize stuff, etc. There are a lot of things you can do here. Suggest new Destination of the month candidates or discoveries. You can also join one of Wikivoyage's many expeditions. If you're an administrator, you also have the powers to stop vandals and others making unwanted edits. If you know a lot about a particular destination then you can become a docent, and people who don't know a lot about a particular destination can contact you and ask you questions about a certain destination.

Events

[edit]
  • Each April Fool's Day we traditionally make a Joke article and feature it on the Main Page for one day, like a Destination of the Month. Be sure to be around then, and you'll get to participate in writing it!

Learn

[edit]
"Thank you" in Hindi; another language you can learn the very basics in here

Can you learn something in Wikivoyage? Glad you asked! You can learn about new places, new cultures, cuisines, basic phrases of languages, and if you feel inspired and have time and money you can head to said places and explore them even in depth.

Work

See Do above.

Wikivoyage has job openings especially for travel writers and people knowledgeable about coding and graphics. But everyone is welcome to plunge forward, as long as they're Here to build a travel guide. If not, you're still welcome to read the guide.

Buy

[edit]

Wikivoyage is free to read and edit, though donations to the Wikimedia Foundation are always welcome.

Spambots sometimes use Wikivoyage as advertising space, both by touting actual travel-related services in listings and articles and by creating user pages for something that has little with travel to do. If you for some reason do patronize those businesses or use their products, don't let them know you've seen their ads on Wikivoyage as this will encourage them.

Eat

[edit]
This picture doesn't have any calories. It also doesn't taste good.

Although exploring and editing Wikivoyage can be exciting, do remember to eat and sleep as our eat listings in themselves are not very filling and our sleep listings in themselves won't help you get your rest.

Drink

[edit]
The pub's always open

The Travellers' pub is open 24/7. Teetotalers always welcome.

Editing while intoxicated is a bad idea – be it articles or talk pages, let alone templates and other code!

Sleep

[edit]
  • HÔTEL DU GRAND TOUT, TITANIC ROAD 16, ATLANTIS, 00001, +00 00000 0000. FANTASTIK LOCATION AND EXELLENT RESTAURANT AND EVERYTHING ELSE AND CLOSE TO EVERYTIN YOU WILL BE AMAZED ATT OUR LOV PRICES AND GREAT SERVIZE !!!!1!"!! CHEAP!!!. No. Just no.

Stay safe

[edit]
Travel Warning WARNING: Stay out of the aforementioned caves below Wikivoyage! If you head there, do not talk about Wikivoyage while there. Any mention of Wikivoyage on that site may be subject to the death penalty or life in prison.

Respect

[edit]

Keep Wikivoyage fun. You are also going to want to look at policies as failure to obey them can result in being buried in the underground magma chamber sent to the Moon without provisions fired and no longer allowed to edit another Wikivoyage article again.

Connect

[edit]
  • www.wikitravel.org – provides excellent connection in destinations. No, go away, Internet Brands. You were overthrown in 2013.
  • Show up at a Wikivoyagers house – maybe at 909 N Pacific Coast Hwy 11th floor, El Segundo, CA 90245, United States. No, Internet Brands, your time to shine has long gone.
  • All locals have mailboxes where other locals will leave messages welcoming you to wikivoyage, or telling you if you did something right or wrong.

Cope

[edit]

You may need a Wikibreak every now and then.

Go next

[edit]
  • Wikipedia or any other awesome Wikiproject.
  • Any of the destinations we have articles about. Or someplace else, in which case you can gather information and write one or several new articles!
Damn, this city guide to Wikivoyage already has more stars than some emperor, junta leader, president for life or generalissimo in general! Folks, please stop the silliness ASAP and plunge forward on some real articles instead.

...pretty pretty please..?
