Loved it Nick. Is this for main page? --Saqib (talk) 17:02, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much! :) I was sort of thinking of it as a potential replacement for the Community Portal that (I may be wrong here) doesn't seem to get used very much. It would hopefully be a place where users could create a more personal travel guide experience with their own maps, reviews (?) and other content. What do you think of the colours? --Nick talk 19:37, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nick, why don't you focus working on the new main page design rather than My Voyage? --Saqib (talk) 22:10, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! How do you mean - are you referring to the readability question? Or are you thinking of this? --Nick talk 22:27, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes this. --Saqib (talk) 22:32, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I'm glad you noticed that! The only reason I abandoned it was because it didn't seem very popular with some people here, but if you think it's worth another go I'm happy to have a play with the concept! :) --Nick talk 22:37, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh Its too long to read. Can you briefly tell me what concerns were raised? --Saqib (talk) 23:31, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whilst there was some support for the idea, some people felt that it was too glossy for our purposes and was too limited in terms of navigation. Although it remains glossy, if you take a look now you'll see that I've pretty much fixed the navigation and there's now room for a lot more nav choices - we could have hundreds! What do you think? --Nick talk 23:51, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes right but why don't you borrow some ideas from WT main page design? --Saqib (talk) 23:57, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To my mind, that's probably a recipe for disaster (WT don't like us anyway), plus most of their Main Page is not built in MediaWiki, which isn't really an option for us. What would you like to see? --Nick talk 00:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
PS Try the proposed Main Page with this CSS code. --Nick talk 00:24, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware that their main page is built on something else. Sure, I'll draw a mock-up later and show you what I want to see on the main page. --Saqib (talk) 00:31, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitravel Extra is dead[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Just a little heads up -- after years of neglect, IB seems to finally have killed off Wikitravel Extra, Wikitravel's attempt at conquering the travelling blogosphere, although the message claims it's under "reconstruction". (Quick, everybody start holding your breath!)

The Internet Archive retains copies (complete with nostalgic SQL errors etc), and I'm migrating the fortunately fairly little stuff I posted there to my private blog. Jpatokal (talk) 11:45, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

With that in mind, is it worth me re-posting the long-neglected My Voyage concept? It was supposed to be our equivalent of Extra with more features. --Nick talk 12:29, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The Extra looked like that already in August. Yes Nicholas, My Voyage is a great idea. Plunge forward, by all means! ϒpsilon (talk) 22:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's not dead, it's just resting. Lovely plumage ... Pashley (talk) 22:55, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps 4000 volts or some Norwegian fjords would wake it up :) . ϒpsilon (talk) 09:43, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ah... the inexorable return!

As per the above discussion, I've moved the perennially present 'My Voyage' out of my user space and into the project space - I hope you don't mind! Those of you who followed the project's development will notice that several sections have mysteriously disappeared - I've removed them because they weren't really ready for public use. With that in mind, if anyone can think of an efficient, semi-automated way of creating itineraries from our articles or of creating maps (I'm presently thinking a combination of worldwide imagemap, plus a tweaked version of this might be the way to go), please do let me know! If you've any ideas for other sections as well, please do say so.

If you're unhappy that I've plunged in this way, please do let me know; I can quite easily move it back to my user space if wanted!

I would hope that eventually My Voyage would deserve it's own link in the sidebar, but that would of course require another consensus.

Thanks, Nick talk 19:22, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nick or if I can say Mr. Picky, As you may know, many new ideas and concept are being ignored lately but no offence. Thats good that you plunged forward and moved "My Voyage" to main namespace but I don't think its going to be utilised until people really show their interest in it. While I'm a big supporter of your ideas, I still don't think how MV could be useful. I still don't understand the benefit having a banner of "This month's travel article" on MV page when DotM always display on the main page. We already have a link to "Tourist Office" in the sidebar then why someone would bother to go to MV page if xe want to go to Tourist Office page. If you remember, few months ago I tried to start an article using "Trip reports" but then I deleted it. I'm not in favour of writing entries here that better be suited on a blog or forum but WV is none of either. As for "Notes from the field", to me the it look like the similar case as "Trip reports". No doubt, you're a creative guy but lets work on something that would be useful otherwise I would say you're wasting your precious time on something having no interest from the community. Anyway, lets have a IRC meeting sometime soon when you got some spare time and in the meantime I suggest you to add MV to Wikivoyage:Roadmap as well. --Saqib (talk) 16:50, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, Saqib. Lots of good ideas have gone unnoticed lately and you're probably right that this is not yet MV's time. Whether that time ever comes is something that we'll have to wait and see! Do you think I should move it out of the WV namespace for the time being?
I think WV's major issue (crucially) remains a lack of readers and editors - something that we really need to work on. I'm still keen to look at another Main Page design, but let's also try to think of ways to get more people involved. My hope was that MV would encourage new users by diversifying our output, but I'm not sure it'll manage that.
I'd be happy to have a chat on IRC soon if you'd like. :) --Nick talk 19:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a problem if MV remain in WV namespace. Yes, my proposed Karachi guide book is my effort to get some editors involved in WV from Pakistan and I believe we'll get some Pakistani editors once the book is out. I would request everyone here to help us spread the word about WV. BTW, I got your message on IRC, sorry I was having dinner so couldn't reply. --Saqib (talk) 20:12, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I can see this working as a kind of alternative main page, but I am not completely sure about the "My" in the title. "My" is often used in computing terms to suggest something that the user can personalise, for example "My Documents" in Windows. I think that readers may expect that My Voyage is going to allow them to create their own private itineraries (in the sense of trip plans), and maybe share these with friends, but not with everybody. AlasdairW (talk) 23:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, I do not think it's ready. We have many bright ideas around here, but too little manpower to execute all of them. How about holding that off for a time when we can really kickstart that? Imagine the disappointment of somebody who sees no or barely any Trip Reports to read, and after months and months it's still the same. No better way to communicate that Wikivoyage is something far from mature. Not something we need now, I believe. PrinceGloria (talk) 06:31, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Share Travel notes of Chinese My Voyage[edit]

Swept in from the pub

I know that the English Wikivoyage has already abandoned the My Voyage project, but we still keep it in our Chinese Wikivoyage.

I take the Travel notes of My Voyage as an example. There is place I went to share the travel itinerary for other visitors, and some of the content can be placed in the destination guide.

Although My Voyage doesn't know if it can be recovered, I think My Voyage of Chinese Wikivoyage is available for English Wikivoyage!--Yuriy kosygin (talk) 18:19, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So what happened to the English MyVoyage? Sounds like this was an interesting project, although at the same time I can understand why contributing to mainspace articles is perhaps a better use of time and energy. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 15:05, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. It has a lot of potential. Would like to see some kind of collaboration or group project coming out of it. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:25, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
