[edit]I guess the main thing preventing this article from already being a guide is the lack of a map. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:07, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Is there anything else? It would be great for this article to be turned into a Guide article that's good enough to feature as a Destination of the Month. Africa is so underrepresented among our good guides, to this point. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:12, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Ikan, i started with Dakar with the exact intention as you;) Seems like we both saw the dotm/otbp schedule a bit as underrepresentative for Africa. I think the see and drink section would need some more content an a map what be the biggest point. OSM is often at the limit, so hopefully some time we are able to get it done. Dakar would be perfect for the first quarter 2014! jan (talk) 12:20, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why, but right now, I can't figure out what OSM is. One thought I had was that there might be a better Dakar article on French Wikivoyage, but that is not the case, so it doesn't look like we'll be able to borrow all that much from there. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:26, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Ikan, i'm talking about http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/14.7131/-17.4531 OSM licence is same as us and this allows to easily create a map for Dakar. AS OSM is a foundation there server is often in overload and i can't export the map at the moment. Usually during the European night it is much better, Saqib was so kind in the past to export it during the late evening in the US/early morning in Asia. jan (talk) 12:44, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, I see. I really know nothing about map-making here. That and pagebanner-making are two things I have not taken the time to learn how to do. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:49, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Pagebanner has lots of friends, so no need to get involved. The map is the complicated issue because sources are scarce and OSM is the best source. As they are badly underfunded it is difficult to download maps... This slows us down, too! jan (talk) 13:01, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Just was lucky and able to download a basic map. I think only splurge entries for hotels are now needed to bring a to guide. jan (talk) 13:18, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- The features on the map are not viewable, though. Is it reasonable to make that map 4 to 5 times bigger? Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:29, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- User:Torty3 reverted me and back, as he is good with maps he might have something in his mind. Maps from osm only come in levels. I could go deeper in but then the island of Ioree would not be anymore on the map. More features for the city or the island? jan (talk) 13:35, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Ha, it was merely a misclick, sorry :) Gonna put in a script to stop me from doing that. I'm alright with it really. Just wondering if the embedded map would be good in this case though. -- torty3 (talk) 13:49, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

I still have trouble to download a better map from OSM but i really like the article. Would anyone object if i nominate it for DotM? There is an open spot in spring 2014 which would fit perfect. jan (talk) 08:03, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
- I don't object, but what about the map that's in the section below? It's a heck of a lot better than the one in the article, right? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:25, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
::Ikan, indeed the map is better but it can't be seen by a big bunch of users due to our switch to https. Or did you mean the static below? That is easy. jan (talk) 08:29, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
- Ikan, map is changed, mapframe has an issue but osm seems to work. jan (talk) 08:33, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
- Exactly. I can't see the mapframe, either, unless I click on it. The OSM is visible. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:38, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
- Changed the map. I think it is now a weak guide as in eat and drink the adresses are missing and listingfication is weak. jan (talk) 08:54, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

[unindent] I'm not convinced this article is a Guide yet, because a lot of listings are lacking addresses. I looked up a couple of easy ones because they had listed websites. Others will require web searching. Do people not use street addresses much in Dakar? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:45, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- Ikan, i can only offer second hand experience with Dakar. I was told that fixed addresses do exist but that's most for administration etc. Informal parts (bars, clus, nightlife) try to reduce their visibility to avoid official which are asking for cadeaux I agree hotels etc is easy to find the address but for drink/eat/nightlife most was only Facebook/Google+ etc. Compared to other guides Dakar is a weak guide, its not all listingfied but we have a map etc. jan (talk) 12:21, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- I understand. In which case, it does sound like the article is a Guide. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:37, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- Should the guide template be changed to usable? --Saqib (talk) 17:33, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not convinced this article is ready to feature, because so far, no-one has come forward who's actually been to the city and can pass judgment on the article, but I don't think that means we need to downgrade it. Why are you considering doing so? Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:40, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I thought to downgrade it in light of concerns raised by User:ChubbyWimbus atDotM nomination page. --Saqib (talk) 18:37, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I'm unconvinced they're sufficient to downgrade the article, but you don't really need anyone's permission to downgrade it and I won't fight you if you feel there's a good reason to do so. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:02, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Illegible screenshot map
[edit]Is there a good reason that we now have an illegible screenshot map embedded in the article instead of a dynamic map like the one above, please ?--W. Frankemailtalk 17:27, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Frank, plunge forward. The static osm is just a base to discuss which parts should be in the map. I'm not a local and only intended to give ideas a base.
- Mmmm, I see that there is currently a problem with the {{Mapframe}} dynamic map template not displaying if you are using a secure connection, so you might wish to use this alternative:
<slippymap lat="14.72" lon="-17.47" z="13" h="470" w="470" layer="Mapnik" marker="0"></slippymap>
By road?
[edit]One of the best-known things about Dakar is the old Paris-Dakar Rally . We do not currently mention it. Why on Earth not? Is the rally route drivable? Is it 4wd only?
My understanding is that it is currently being run in Chile or some such. Is that because parts of West Africa are dangerous? If so, we should have warnings. Pashley (talk) 01:24, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- In my opinion, we should definitely not list the race here if it's not being held from Paris to Dakar, because what's the use in listing an event that's not happening? If it's being run in Chile, it should be listed there. There should be warnings in a guide to anyplace where a visitor's safety is in danger, but if the danger is in Mali, travellers should be warned not to cross the border from Senegal to Mali in the Senegal article, not this one. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:49, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- The Rallye Paris-Dakar was moved to South America a couple of years ago. Main reason are the terrorism groups actice particularly in Mauretania and Mali. France is trying to bring back a safe way to sub-Saharian Africa but at the moment is suicidal to do that trip. We should add a warning box and mention the rallye. I think as long as Mali and Mauretania are not under (government) control, the route is too dangerous. While Mali is improving, Mauretania is rather difficult.jan (talk) 08:07, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- Mauretania has a huge warning box, i think we can just copy parts of it. jan (talk) 08:09, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Eat/Drink Section
[edit]Hi! I think overall the article is a guide with some weakness in the Eat/Drink section. It seems to be very difficult to get exact address because they seem not really useful. Most is something like cnr ave x to rue y in a side way z instead of 10, rue suisse. Even bigger places don't have homepages and the whole bars/drinks/nightlife is on facebook. That's an issue for xl. jan (talk) 11:18, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
New airport
[edit]I've added what I know about the new airport (I'm here now, it's been open for 39 hours).
My taxi driver didn't know the way, and Google Maps doesn't yet have the new motorway marked. However, it's clearly signed, and it's on OpenStreetMap. Tolls for about half the motorway were 1400CFA, I'd guess the whole length is around 3000CFA. (My driver took a wrong turn, so we finished the journey on unsafe local roads.)
The railway to the airport is supposed to open in 2018. M Blissett (talk) 03:05, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! It's always great to have local on-the-ground knowledge. Hobbitschuster (talk) 10:06, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

New nomination?
[edit]This article was nominated and slushed. See Wikivoyage:Destination_of_the_month_candidates/Slush_pile#Dakar. What does it take to make it featured? /Yvwv (talk) 20:16, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
- Many of the listings are undated, so updating them would be a first step. Ground Zero (talk) 20:46, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
