Sushi in Buenos Aires[edit]

Moved from Argentina - in case anyone wants to use it -- (WT-en) Huttite 05:35, 19 Jan 2005 (EST)

Sushi in Buenos Aires

The intense growth of the city beside the River Plate in terms of culinary experiences has been outstanding. The late 2001 political and economical crisis has resulted in a positive way regarding the city's attractions, since the new exchange rate has made of Buenos Aires a very profitable and growing market for foreign investors. The former UCR government staff was christened by the local press as the Sushi group because of their chick way of living and expensive tastes. This characterization crashed with the one the press had made of the menemist government: pizza and champagne, a mix of sophistication and low-class origins. From the millenium to this part, Sushi places, bars, restaurants, pubs and all sort of culinary experiences linked to the Japanese culture have blossomed impressively. The alternatives for the delicate palates who enjoy this oriental feast to the senses broaden daily range from good to exquisite. Of the many different cuisine's that my wife and I have enjoyed, the delicious art form that is sushi is by far our favorite. And I would like to share our culinary experiences with all netsurfers that visit this weblog. That's why we will post up a review of each of the Sushi restaurants we eat at, talking about food quality, ambiance, service and of course all sort of additional tips that we find useful for the local and visitor who enjoys good quality, perfect service and extraordinary food!

Article status[edit]

I'm changing the status of this article back to outline because there are no complete listings on the Eat section. (WT-en) Rmx 14:09, 16 Jan 2006 (EST)

Article name[edit]

The city of Buenos Aires, at least outside of Argentina, is much much more famous than Buenos Aires (province). So I've moved the article from Buenos Aires (city) to Buenos Aires. --(WT-en) Evan 12:11, 6 Feb 2006 (EST)

Good move. I thought about this too when I created the article in pt: - it's a bit like the Paris vs. Paris (Texas) dilemma. (WT-en) Rmx 12:35, 6 Feb 2006 (EST)
Do these articles need moving too?
I did it. It fixed the breadcrumb navigation, so I guess that was the Right Thing To Do. Thanks for all your work, btw. -- (WT-en) Colin 18:03, 6 Feb 2006 (EST)
My pleasure, thanks for your help & patience.

Learn[edit]

I heard from a couple of friends that they are Spanish courses in Buenos Aires. I have seen the link from the uni BA. Is this the only one? (WT-en) Jan 05:23, 6 June 2006

Certainly not. I'm sure there are dozens of good courses available (see the Open Directory link on the left side navigation bar) but apparently only this one has been recommended by a Wikivoyager. --(WT-en) Ricardo (Rmx) 09:41, 6 June 2006 (EDT)
Thanks! I didn't know dmoz (WT-en) Jan 09:57, 6 June 2006

I'm writing a more complete overview on learning Spanish in Buenos Aires as the current one sentence is woefully lacking in utility. --(WT-en) Erik 18:58, 3 July 2009 (ART)

I would like to remove the Education Levels section. I don't see what point it serves to a traveler. Any objections? I'll give it a week. If I don't hear any objections I'm removing it.--(WT-en) Ekmsid 18:16, 7 July 2009 (EDT)

I certainly appreciate the consensus the consensus based approach, but I think this case is clear enough where you can just plunge forward and delete it! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:44, 7 July 2009 (EDT)

What exactly is 'latino spanish'? Argentina simply refers to Spanish as 'Castellano' due to history, not the fact that Argentina and Spain speak Castillian Spanish while the rest of Latin America speaks "Latino Spanish". In fact, due to heavy italian/lunfardo influences, Argentinian Spanish is one of the most removed varieties of Spanish from the original Castillian. Moreover, ALL of latin america speaks Castillian Spanish, Argentines (and Uruguayans) are the only one that refer to the language as such.

Minor changes[edit]

(Because this is the English Wikivoyage, we prefer that you talk here in that language. Hopefully you know about the Spanish Wikivoyage as well? Your change makes sense; thanks for the help.) - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 19:27, 26 July 2006 (EDT)

About Marini Buffet[edit]

I don't think that Marini should be recommended in such way. I've been there, it is good, but nothing AWESOME as the article suggest. Actually you can see some complaints about the place here: http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/detail.php?ID=1026 So, i think that the recomendation is completely out of place.

Feel free to plunge forward and edit or remove the listing. (WT-en) Maj 02:01, 26 January 2007 (EST)

Congreso[edit]

Congreso is spelled with only one 's', you retards. 68.175.86.31 20:48, 21 January 2009 (EST)

I don't think "retards" belongs to the spirit of a wiki, but he's right, it's Congreso with only one S ( which means congress ). I don't change it because I see it links to a section, and I'm not sure how and if I can change that too. 201.212.109.232 22:59, 26 April 2009 (EDT)

Bloody Hell! All this griping about Congreso and nobody changed it!?! Very funny. It's fixed.(WT-en) Ekmsid 20:54, 4 July 2009 (EDT)

Racism in Buenos Aires[edit]

Is that section actually accurate, I have a feeling for it to be a bit of an exaggeration especially because at the end it states you should instead go to Brazil. Well, whoever lives there can be the judge of it, just wanted to point it out. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 154.20.22.185 (talkcontribs)

It seemed pretty clearly over the top to me too (and the header was in all caps...). I don't like "racism in X" sections anyway—they are a little too subjective, and they invite controversy and other distractions. So I removed it altogether. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 19:14, 3 March 2009 (EST)

Can we delete this section at this point? --(WT-en) Ekmsid 21:17, 4 July 2009 (EDT)

Do you mean this discussion? If so, no—we don't ever delete discussions. At most, we'd archive them, but we only do that if the talk page has grown very long. For the sake of transparency, we like discussions to stand, to keep a good record of how decisions were made. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:17, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
Thanks, good to know --(WT-en) Ekmsid 08:59, 23 July 2009 (EDT)

Crime[edit]

I took a big bite out of this section. Sorry for the allusion humor. I was shy about changing too much but there are a lot of inconsistent, vague and inaccurate statements. The section I didn't change is regarding Taxis. The same cautions are peppered throughout the whole article and they are out-dated. But first I had to talk with a few sources in BsAs to be sure of the accuracy of what I was going to say. This is coming soon. It is true that 4 years ago there continued to be crime issues with Taxis, but the government cracked down on illegal Taxis very successfully. Petty crime continues (like taking indirect routes or rarely changing money for counterfeits). Also the Ezeiza section goes on a bit and contradicts itself frequently. I took a small stab at that but, as taxi is a portion of it it needs more cleanup.

I welcome your opinions about what I'm planning to do. --(WT-en) Ekmsid 21:17, 4 July 2009 (EDT)

Districts talk (2017)[edit]

Now I am not an expert on Buenos Aires... In fact, I have never been there. But it does appear, that the current number of districts does not serve the voyager well as there are a lot of them with not all that much in them. Maybe some of them could be combined into bigger districts or alternatively the districts could be rebooted altogether? Just a thought... I will not be able to provide any further input on the issue... Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:55, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hobbitschuster, I am with you there! Even the Spanish article - the most comprehensive one for Buenos Aires on Wikivoyage, which has a similar district separation - has many stub articles. I have been to the city multiple times in 2004 and can confirm, that the main tourist attractions are pretty much centered in a relatively small space in and around the city center. That's why I would propose to merge everything into 3 district articles. Below is my recommendation. Maybe Ikan Kekek and other experienced contributors have time to express their opinion as well. In case you agree I can try my best to merge the current articles into 3 new ones.

Some topics, which might be worthwhile to discuss:

  • Add Barracas to South? The only attraction there seems to be this Pasaje Lanín.
  • Add a fourth article for all the remaining districts of Buenos Aires?

Thanks for you support! --Renek78 (talk) 13:43, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Map
Districts of Buenos Aires

  Buenos Aires/North (Palermo, Recoleta)
Palermo is a hip residential neighborhood of tree-lined streets and intersections packed with restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Recoleta is considered one of the finest and most expensive areas of the city. It boasts many French style buildings, large green spaces, and first class restaurants. The famous Recoleta Cemetery is well worth a visit.
Buenos Aires/Centro (Retiro, San Nicolás, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, Monserrat, Constitución)
City centre with many of the major tourist attractions, like Florida pedestrian street, Casa Rosada, world famous Teatro Colón and the renewed part of Puerto Madero among many others.
  Buenos Aires/South (Barracas, La Boca)
La Boca is considered Buenos Aires's most colorful neighborhood with a very outgoing personality. Tourists favor this picturesque district for its rich history and vibrant colors: greens, yellows, reds, and purples highlight the urban scenery. Furthermore it is home to La Bombonera - the football stadium of Boca Juniors. Barracas is famous for its Pasaje Lanín - a street, where all houses are decorated with colorful tile mosaics.
  Buenos Aires/Outskirts (Comuna 3-15)
##Summarize tourist attractions, which are located in the outskirts###
Having used Wikivoyage to plan a recent trip to Buenos Aires, I can confirm that Renek78's proposed districts, together with a fourth district including the rest of the city, would have been more useful to me than the current ones. —Granger (talk · contribs) 15:57, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Since I was pinged: I've never been to Argentina, so I'm happy to simply support the consensus here. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:22, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've also never been, but I clicked on all the district articles and from a content perspective I support the consensus. I'd defer to anyone with actual knowledge of the city, however. --ButteBag (talk) 20:51, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
ButteBag, sounds good. How long shall we wait roughly?--Renek78 (talk) 22:41, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Renek78, I would start putting the "Outskirts" article together now. Once you are tired of doing that it will probably have been long enough to start working on the other three! (I'm never sure about policies, but I think it's usually something in the range of 4 people saying "go for it" within a week or so? It's all a bit nebulous (intentionally).) Suerte! --ButteBag (talk) 14:16, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's been a few months now. I think if there are no objections, we can go ahead and reorganize the districts as Renek78 proposed. —Granger (talk · contribs) 02:02, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Granger, thanks for starting the work! I'll help as soon as possible! --Renek78 (talk) 21:50, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've merged the districts and added the new map to the article. All that's left to do now, I think, is to tidy up the new district articles and make sure that they're well organized and don't have duplicate listings (and that I didn't make any mistakes!). Thank you for coming up with this districtification—I think it serves the traveller much better than the previous one! —Granger (talk · contribs) 02:04, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reciprocity Fee on U.S. Travelers Suspended[edit]

Stumbled on a memo from Argentina's Immigration "agency" stating that as of 26 March 2016, U.S. citizens will no longer be charged the $160 per person fee before or as they enter the country. Could someone with better sources than I confirm this and modify "Get in" for this article, and perhaps move the topic to the front of Get in? Have made similar request for Argentina. Regards, Hennejohn (talk) 17ː23, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

New banner?[edit]

Banner 2 (current)

Banner 9
Banner 10

I don't like the current banner of Buenos Aires very much. It is just a shot of some tall buildings. I'd like to propose replacing this with the musicians banner I had as an option for the country article. Any thoughts? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:10, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

These buildings aren't particularly interesting. I approve of substituting the new banner. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:40, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 22:54, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just added all of the district banners. Many of them will not be needed anymore, if we simplify the district set-up. --Renek78 (talk) 21:45, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Those street musicians could be anywhere in the world. Why not using Banner 3 or 9? At least those pictures are unmistakeable BA. --Renek78 (talk) 21:44, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think banner 9 looks good. It's a nice picture, and I agree that it's recognizably Buenos Aires. —Granger (talk · contribs) 02:23, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The musicians are a snapshot of Buenos Aires life. The vistas of buildings... well all are pretty soulless. Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:37, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess. At least banner 9 looks like Buenos Aires. The musicians could just as easily be in New York or Santiago. —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:06, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The districts of Buenos Aires[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Simply put, those articles that exist are not in a good state overall, some districts simply redlink and the map has a lot of gray. I think a tabula rasa approach makes the most sense, but I fear there is nobody here with enough local knowledge to draw new districts from scratch... Does anybody have another idea? Maybe geotag the listings and go from there? Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:40, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are information on Wikipedia for each district, if we choose to wait with redistricting then I could take upon me to add basic information and geotagging to redlinked districts over the next week . --Jonte-- (talk) 09:14, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There certainly is no rush and geotagging can do no harm. Remember that our districts have to cover everything and have no overlap. We are not bound by any administrative borders however, and may draw districts that make sense from a travel standpoint. Personally I know too little about Buenos Aires to draw districts myself, but I much appreciate you helping out with coordinates and the likes. Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:51, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good news! User:Renek78 has proposed new districts at Talk:Buenos Aires#Districts talk (2017), which I think look like a significant improvement. —Granger (talk · contribs) 16:05, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Porteños" does not refer to immigration[edit]

The original name of the city is "Ciudad de la Santísima Trinidad y puerto de Santa María de los Buenos Aires". It was founded as a city with a port to fend off pirates and enemies in general. People from the port are "porteños". It has nothing to do with immigration.

Wikidata ID's for dynamic map[edit]

Map
Map of Buenos Aires

To the right is the map with all Wikidata ID's for the city. Just click on a district to get the corresponding Wikidata ID. This should simplify the work in case we want to change the district set-up in the future. The tool Wikidata Extractor has been used to create the mapshapes..--Renek78 (talk) 20:44, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Language of Porteños[edit]

The Talk section warns that the inhabitants speak an odd Spanish of their own. We are however referred to Argentinian dictionaries. So what is the relation between Spanish in Buenos Aires, that in the rest of Argentina and that of most Latin America? I think this article should only briefly mention that there are differences between Argentine and Latin American Spanish and that in Spain, and concentrate on differences between that of Porteňos and the rest of Argentina. –LPfi (talk) 13:43, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
