Intention of this page[edit]

Is this page intended as an index to other articles about rail travel in general? Most of the rail travel in the US/Canada articles do not actually qualify as "heritage and tourist railways", which I would assume is intended more to include things like the steam locomotive between Durango and Silverton. Wouldn´t those links to more general articles about rail travel be better off in a "See also" section? I can think of a few things that could be mentioned here, such as the steam train between Ouro Preto, Mariana, and Tiradentes in Minas Gerais or the tourist train passing through several little towns between Curitiba and Paranaguá, but from the current format I cannot really tell how these ought to be treated here. (I don´t expect Brazil really has enough of these things to merit its own Rail travel in Brazil article.) Texugo (talk) 13:48, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking the questions. The intention of separating this form of rail from the main topic is that (1) the smaller aspects - like particular railways or operations (like the Tierra del fuego one) are hoped for - not a country level link... (2) apologies the links left in this article were not removed when creating the topic - the only good example is the sub section of the travel in the united kingdom... I was hoping people would get the idea and modify the article outline to identify specific operations - lines, rather than 'country level links' sats (talk) 15:20, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New banner?[edit]

Current banner.
New banner.
Glenfinnan Viaduct and Jacobite
Steam train near Fraser
Steam train in Mouchnice

The current banner is on more locations on Wikivoyage. Policy states that banners may only be used once as to not confuse the traveller, so I've gone ahead and made a new banner (right). Should we replace the banner?

Thanks for creating this. I think that it would be better to have a more prominent train - either a different photo, or this one cropped to 2100 pixels wide. AlasdairW (talk) 00:05, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Current banner is superior; railway is way too small in suggested replacement. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:43, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't there some images of the Tallylyn or Severn Valley that could be used? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:44, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The current banner doesn't even show a heritage railway, so should definitely be replaced, when a decent image has been sourced. The Talyllyn Railway doesn't have any pictures worthy of being turned into a banner (IMHO; see what you think), and the Severn Valley Railway has its own WV article with banner, so using it in another banner wouldn't be the best idea. --ThunderingTyphoons! How about this? Hobbitschuster (talk) 11:33, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have had a go at making three further banners to choose from. Fraser is the best picture, but unfortunately the text covers the engine, so my preference is for Glenfinnan. However pedants should note that this is a steam train on a mainline railway. AlasdairW (talk) 15:12, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one. That's a good choice. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:42, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well a steam train on a mainline is probably not 100% ideal either but good enough for now. I prophesize another debate about this some time in the future... Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:06, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you make a banner out of the image you proposed (I couldn't picture it myself), then that may fit the bill. However, the steam train on Glenfinnan Viaduct is superb and iconic, so I'd want to see it redeployed somewhere. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 19:17, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think that maybe the text should be tweaked to include trains like the Jacobite, which is run on mainline tracks, but by a separate company from the regular passenger trains. I don't see that there is much difference from a traveller's viewpoint, and I think that the only way to have such a long steam hauled route (65km) is using mainline tracks. I did look at using the other suggested image, but I thought that the train was a bit hidden by the steam. AlasdairW (talk) 23:27, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Remember we also have tourist trains Hobbitschuster (talk) 03:40, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I do realise the current one is nice, but I stumbled across this image on Commons and I prefer its composition. If it doesn't find good use, I'll start a travel topic for heritage railways in Aus and NZ, and probably try and make it a good travel topic someday (the wikipedia articles for both countries are reasonably good), so it's not a loss if this new banner doesn't find good use. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 12:27, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
