Talk:Wuhan
Add topicNice work folks! I created a stub two weeks ago because I know Wuhan's an important city, but I had almost nothing to say about it. Others have turned it into a real article very quickly. What a pleasant surprise. (WT-en) Pashley 04:43, 15 May 2006 (EDT)
- You nagged me enough that I finally got off my keister and started contributing. --(WT-en) 严加华 05:45, 16 May 2006 (EDT)
The docent code doesn't accept anything but plain-vanilla western text as a user ID. I'm willing to act as docent for Wuhan, but can't flag this.
Train schedules
[edit]I see that this paragraph was cut out from the article, so here it is:
The following table lists train travel times from Nanjing to major cities, as of the early 2014 (as per http://qq.ip138.com/train/hubei/wuhan.htm , http://qq.ip138.com/train/hubei/hankou.htm , http://qq.ip138.com/train/hubei/WuChang.htm ). Included are high-speed day trains (G and D series) and faster "conventional" trains (Z and T series, many running overnight). Travel times by slower trains (K series, or "no letter" ones) are longer.
--Vmenkov (talk) 14:30, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- Should this be restored to the article? It seems useful, so on the face of it, I'm not sure why it was removed, unless it's either obsolete or somehow redundant. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:21, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- Not sure it should be restored. The linked site is only in Chinese and is not an 'official' one either.
- I can't speak to the accuracy of the times provided, but in China rail changes rapidly and all the time. I would not plan any trip on the basis on the linked site. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:13, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think we should ever concern ourselves with the specific train, bus, flight schedules unless we have a link to an official site that is kept current. Otherwise, we run the risk of providing outdated information that could really mess up someone's travel plans. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 10:53, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
The linked site is not "official", but I've been using it for the last several years (because I found the official one less convenient), and they update the schedules in a very timely manner. I am not saying the links should be restored to the article page, but I'd like to at least keep it here for reference. Yes, the site is in Chinese; but I would hope that a traveler who buys his own train tickets and then takes a train across China on his own can at least read a train schedule in Chinese! :-) -- Vmenkov (talk) 06:51, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
"Learn" section
[edit]I'm assuming all these schools accept foreign students on years abroad? If so, the listings are OK to include, but could someone please summarize and tailor the prose to non-matriculated students taking short courses and foreigners doing semesters or years abroad? Going on and on about universities is not Wikivoyage style. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:34, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
Restrict editing for new users for a while?
[edit]Look at the history, guess who's vandalizing their umpteenth Asian article for the umpteenth time. Should we limit editing of this article to autoconfirmed users only for a while? --Ypsilon (talk) 19:25, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- Or actually it may not be a good idea, an IP just improved the warningbox. Didn't we have a filter for the wheels vandalism? --Ypsilon (talk) 19:52, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Districtify?
[edit]I've recently done a lot of work on this page and have managed to push the number of listed attractions to well over 100 (and I'm not done yet). It would seem therefore that now would be a good time to begin discussing districtification, the coronavirus notwithstanding. Anyone disagree? STW932 (talk) 09:02, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Assuming there is consensus on the need to districtify, I would like to propose the creation of the following district articles:
- 1. Northern Wuhan (comprising Huangpi and Xinzhou)
- 2. Northwestern Wuhan (comprising, Jiang'an, Jianghan, Qiaokou and Dongxihu)
- 3. Southwestern Wuhan (comprising Hanyang, Caidian and Hannan)
- 4. Wuchang (Most of Wuchang, except the areas close to the East Lake)
- 5. Eastern Wuhan (Comprising Qingshan, Hongshan and those areas of Wuchang bordering the East Lake)
- 6. Jiangxia (all of Jiangxia)
STW932 (talk) 09:02, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- This is a somewhat odd time to district, but actually, it's a good use of your time, and you have my blessing to do it the way you want, as you know the city and have a clear plan. Just one question: About how many listings do you expect to have in each of these districts? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:01, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- Northwestern Wuhan should be called "Hankou". I think Wuchang, Hanyang, and Hankou need to be district names. It's VERY helpful to know where each is when you're in Wuhan. Residents refer to them a lot when talking about parts of the city. I think it's a disservice to the traveler to use things like "Northwestern" when a useful name like Hankou exists. I would probably also change "Southwestern" to "Hanyang" and just state in the article that our Hanyang article includes Caidian and Hannan. Other than that, it seems fine. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 11:16, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- I take your point. Perhaps we could compromise by using names such as "Hanyang and Southwestern Wuhan" and "Hankou and Northwestern Wuhan" ("Hankou" includes Jiang'an, Jianghan and Qiaokou, but not Dongxihu). Or would you say those names are a little too wordy? STW932 (talk) 14:46, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

At present, the number of See and Do listings available for each of the proposed districts are as follows:
- 1. Northern Wuhan: 14 listings
- 2. Hankou and Northwestern Wuhan: 32 listings
- 3. Hanyang and Southwestern Wuhan: 13 listings
- 4. Wuchang: 23 listings
- 5. Eastern Wuhan: 25 listings
- 6. Jiangxia: 4 listings
Bear in mind that these are not the final figures. I'm pretty sure I can probably add at least another 3 or 4 more listings for Jiangxia for example. STW932 (talk) 14:46, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
It may be useful to this dicussion if someone could create a map showing the proposed districts. STW932 (talk) 14:46, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- That count of listings per district looks OK to me. I figure the one for Hankou and environs could divide up the listings in subsections, if need be, so as to not have overly long lists. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:22, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- Do we have other examples of districts using "X and Northwest (or some cardinal direction)"? It looks a bit long to me. How many sites are in Dongxihu? Would it be strange to make it part of "Northern Wuhan"? Or we could leave it in Hankou and just state in the article that it covers the three districts that make up what is historically "Hankou" but that our article also covers Dongxihu. I believe this is done in other article districts. Dongxihu is not so large, so it shouldn't be too jarring to just include it with Hankou, and as Ikan Kekek mentioned, "Dongxihu" could have its own subsection to make it even clearer that the district belongs in that article. I think the same for Hanyang. Call the region Hanyang, explain that our article covers other regions and give those subheadings. I'm not sure about Jiangxia. 4 total is really low. Do you think it can hold its own district? ChubbyWimbus (talk) 12:54, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, I'm leaning toward accepting your arguments on the naming of the districts. Regarding Dongxihu, we currently only have one listing (though there are at least 5 more that could be added). I would prefer to group Dongxihu with Hankou due to the road and metro links, and also because there is one listing (the Wuhan Expo Garden) which sits on the boundary between Qiaokou and Dongxihu. As for Jiangxia, I'm quite certain we can increase the total number of listings to at least double the present number. (Examples of potential new listings in the Jiangxia area include the Jiangxia Museum, the Bee Museum, Jiangxia Central Park, Canglong Island National Wetlands Park, Qinglongshan National Forest Park and the Huaishan Stone Embankment.) If that's still not enough, perhaps we could add in the South Lake region from Eastern Wuhan, which would give us an additional 3 or 4 listings. STW932 (talk) 15:28, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Sounds good to group Dongxihu with Hankou. With the places you've listed, I think Jiangxia sounds more viable as an independent region. Is there anything else that needs to be decided? If not, I think you can go ahead with the new districts! ChubbyWimbus (talk) 10:37, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- Everything's fine now, or so it would appear. I will wait a few days just in case anyone else has anything to say. STW932 (talk) 16:01, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Shall we replace the banner?
[edit]Shall we replace the banner? The current banner could be used on the Wuchang District page. STW932 (talk) 08:21, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- That solution is OK with me. Let's see what other people think. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:35, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- I generally prefer banners that show off the city's character rather than city panoramas. It's not a bad picture. It's just generic. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 09:27, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- I prefer the alternative pagebanner to the current one. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 11:55, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

- So do I, actually. The pagoda is cut off, and the trees either side are awkward. The banner reminds the reader that, although little known outside China (recent news notwithstanding), Wuhan is an important city the size of London. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:44, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Looks like we have a majority in favour of changing the banner. Shall I go ahead and change it? STW932 (talk) 11:36, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- I agree with ChumbyWimbus's objection to yet-another city panorama, but the current banner isn't a good one, as FT explains. I support the change. Ground Zero (talk) 11:56, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, I've made the change. STW932 (talk) 12:33, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- What about one of the “Future City” images? One of them is already used in the article, but there are others. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:15, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Renewed discussion for 2022
[edit]There is no custom pagebanner on Wuhan/Wuchang, and the old banner is nicer than the current very smoggy city view. Whatever it was originally changed to was deleted either from Commons or Wikivoyage. So I'd recommend changing back to the banner with the pagoda unless we prefer to have truth in advertising and turn people off from visiting this city. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:48, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- I agree. Go for it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:51, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- Any objection? Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:41, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with having the pagoda as the banner. The pagoda is one of Wuhan's most iconic tourist attractions, and even though the current one is a reconstruction, it plays a very important role in Chinese culture and was featured very prominently in ancient Chinese poetry. The dog2 (talk) 23:02, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- I tried to restore the old banner, but the banner looks the same. I'm guessing that the banner at Wikidata is overriding this edit. What needs to be done to change the image? Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:04, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- Fixed. Banners on Wikidata cannot override local non-default banners as far as I know. —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:26, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

Metro map
[edit]Hi @Painjet:, let's talk about this. The map which I prefer has been constantly modified since it was first uploaded and was last updated a year ago. To what degree is it defunct; how much has changed? Assuming it is up-to-date (which I don't know for sure, that's why I'm asking), it's simply laid-out and easy to use, with large text, line symbols and minimal geographic details.
I'm sorry to be critical of your map, but I find it impossible to read without going into Commons and zooming in to a ridiculous degree. It can't be used by someone reading Wikivoyage, which is important because our articles are designed to be used offline or printed out, if that's what a traveller needs. Regarding the design, it's an impressive piece of detailed, geographically-accurate cartography, but I couldn't use it to navigate the Wuhan Metro for the first time. But I'm interested to read your thoughts, and hope to get the opinions of others too. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:20, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @ThunderingTyphoons!: firstly, thanks for your attention to Wuhan and your criticism of my work. West Extension of Line 4 (Bailin - Huangjinkou) & Phase 3 of Line 8 (Yezhihu - Military Athletes' Village, a 3-station section) opened in 2019, however, they are not shown on the old map. I have no idea if the author of the old map is planning to update it. After discussing this problem with him, I will give you a solution.
-Painjet (talk) 13:39, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Respect Section
[edit]Should we add more details to this respect section? If so, can you think of more than just COVID-19 naming or outbreak?--204.129.232.195 18:38, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think there is anything else specific to Wuhan that doesn't apply to the rest of China. I wonder though if more than being "offensive" if you could actually be arrested for references to Covid that outright or appear to blame Wuhan or China. It seems that should be made clear.
