"Help translate" tag proposal[edit]

Swept in from pub: I have been doing some serious work on Ouro Preto and Mariana and other Brazilian locations, and I noticed that, unsurprisingly, there are a lot of destinations for which the English site has but a skeleton, while the Portuguese version is pretty fleshed out. I'm sure this is the case for many other locations in various other languages as well. In order to promote better cooperation between language versions, I'd like to propose a tag or set of tags for these cases, to be placed at the bottom of such an article or possibly even at the top, indicating that a more complete article exists in x language, and compelling users that speak that language to help translate the information here on en:. What do you guys think? (WT-en) Texugo 11:49, 4 February 2009 (EST)

I think that is a great idea. Additionally, it may be helpful to place a smaller tag at the bottom of the superior articles, compelling multilingual users to contribute to the language articles with less information. (WT-en) Jtesla16 15:18, 4 February 2009 (EST)
I think putting a tag in the superior articles would have us with a tag in almost every article we have, since there is bound to be at least one language version without much of an article. The number of articles which have a good article elsewhere but not here are bound to be more manageable I think. Any other thoughts? (WT-en) Texugo 23:17, 11 February 2009 (EST)
That's true. Your original idea is probably best then. How do we go about creating such a tag? Do we need permission? (WT-en) Jtesla16 08:44, 12 February 2009 (EST)
We don't need permission and I can create it if we decide on the text of the message, but I'd like to hear from a few more people and get a little broader consensus before we start.(WT-en) Texugo 09:58, 12 February 2009 (EST)
I think this idea is quite worthwhile, and it would be nice to also create a Project:Article translation page, on which we'd add a link to each page that has the Template:Translate template. To increase the visibility of the translation page, we could insert links into the Babel templates (e.g., [[Project:Article translation#Spanish|español]]). Language on Template:Translate could be something like "This article exists on the [[:xx:Article|XX language version]] in superior form. Please help us with translation!" --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:59, 12 February 2009 (EST)

I like the way this is solved at Wikipedia (or Wiktionary?): they "star" the most high-quality language article (in the list which is already under the Toolbox), thus encouraging to improve other language versions from that starred one. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:03, 14 February 2009 (EST)

Did someone end up creating a template for this? I think it's a great idea. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:50, 11 April 2009 (EDT)
And just in case anybody needed any further support, I think it is also a great and simple idea. Are you still volunteering to build the template, (WT-en) Texugo?

Implement[edit]

One year later, and I've finally created the template. I added it to at least one article. Look good? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:27, 2 May 2010 (EDT)

Looks excellent, great idea and implementation guys! --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 15:19, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
What if we do something like Wikipedia and have a star (or some symbol we create) listed on the left by the language version. If you're unfamiliar with this, see Chad [1] Under the languages on the left, you can see stars beside Bulgarian, Norwegian, Swedish, and Chinese. On Wikipedia, that means that the article was featured. We could do that (with our DotMs and OtBPs) or just do it for guide/star articles. That would get the message off the actual page while still letting people know that the other language versions have more complete articles (although in the Chad example, it has also been featured in English). I guess this was mentioned above, but no one commented with any thoughts. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 18:24, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
Having special symbols for star/guide articles of other languages would be a neat thing. Anyway the template is still important as it is more visible and we can have a page to list all translation requests and thereby assist any contributors. By the way, does such a page - showing all articles to be translated - exist yet? Maybe put new links in the "Project Home" also? --(WT-en) Sebindi 00:50, 5 May 2010 (EDT)
The simplest way to check such a page would be at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Translate. I could also insert a category into the template. It would be nice to find a good way to force it to sort by language... --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:24, 6 May 2010 (EDT)

rm Origin[edit]

I wonder why we can't simplify usage towards skipping "Origin=", which could result in something like {{Translate|:es:Fuenterrabía|Spanish}}. Ideally we'd derive :es: into Spanish automatically (so we leave only one of them in usage), but that's not what I'm very experienced in.--(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:20, 19 August 2010 (EDT)

No objections? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 19:57, 1 September 2010 (EDT)

Category for articles in need of translation?[edit]

Could the template add articles into a category of articles needing translation (possibly in that language)? As it stands, the only way to see if any articles need translating is to check the "what links here" link and work from there. --(WT-en) rfilmyer 10:03, 12 April 2011 (EDT)

It might make sense to add a "Articles needing translation" category that could be a child of Category:Articles needing attention. Let's wait a few days though to see if anyone else supports/objects to the idea. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:16, 12 April 2011 (EDT)
Support, though looks like it will work best if there's a separate (sub?)-category for each language, as people normally can help with translating from language they know well. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:21, 12 April 2011 (EDT)
Strong Support. If someone were enthusiastic about translating, there is currently no way to really locate where the marked articles are. It would be nice to have a convenient way to find them, and yes, if possible, organize them by language. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:42, 12 April 2011 (EDT)
Seems like no one is objecting and a few people support this. I looked at some wikipedia template sources and it's easier than it seems. I'm going to make all templates with the translate template be auto-added to the Category:Articles needing translation page. --(WT-en) Rfilmyer 15:16, 25 April 2011 (EDT)
It works! Pages should be added to the category, which itself is a subcategory of Category:Articles needing attention --(WT-en) Rfilmyer 15:39, 25 April 2011 (EDT)
Hey, great job! (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:18, 26 April 2011 (EDT)
I would suggest making a different template for each language, so we can have a separate category for each language. Otherwise you have to click to each article in the list to see what language it needs translating from. (WT-en) texugo 23:54, 26 April 2011 (EDT)

smarter parameters[edit]

Refactored the original idea into what I find more usable; feel free to plunge forward to replace if you find it useful (or I will myself some day): Template:Translate2. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:48, 29 April 2011 (EDT)

Beautiful! Let's move this to Template:Translate and start using it. (WT-en) texugo 22:01, 29 April 2011 (EDT)
Done: moved Translate2 source into Translate; redirected from Template:Translate2 to Template:Translate. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:48, 27 May 2011 (EDT)
That switch is nice! It works beautifully in this situation. I went ahead and changed the new Category titles to remove the slash, since it causes breadcrumb navigation to kick in and it didn't automatically add it to the parent category anyway. I also arranged the categories so they are included in the parent category and gave them descriptions. (WT-en) texugo 09:54, 29 May 2011 (EDT)
I'm fine with categories rework, although I believe MediaWiki has every support needed for sub-categories, per [2]. But not sure I have spare efforts to invest into it right now--maybe someone else. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:29, 29 May 2011 (EDT)
Oops, looks like it works already just fine. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:43, 29 May 2011 (EDT)
Yeah, I set up sub-categories. It's just that using a slash doesn't make that happen automatically and instead causes breadcrumb navigation to kick in, which we don't use for categories, so I changed it. (WT-en) texugo 20:32, 29 May 2011 (EDT)

before or after article body?[edit]

Can we specify that in usage example? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:28, 19 August 2010 (EDT)

Sure. It looks like others have been putting it at the bottom, while I have at the top. I tend to figure that those who would be inclined to do the translation (in addition to readers who might notice that they could go ahead and read the article in their native language) would be more casual users of the site, and therefore less likely to see the template at the bottom. I don't care too strongly, though, so if others prefer the bottom, I'm OK with that. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:54, 21 August 2010 (EDT)

revisit: Top or bottom[edit]

Of the inclusions so far, some of them are at the top of the page and some are at the bottom. Which do we prefer for this? (WT-en) texugo 09:53, 29 May 2011 (EDT)

Although it's more visible at the top, I prefer the bottom so that it doesn't get in the way of the article itself. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 10:20, 29 May 2011 (EDT)
Initially I had no preference, but I don't like the way it stacks with the routebox, status box and category box. If we do put it at the bottom, could we possibly give it the same size and look as the article status box, just to make it look less like a jumble? (WT-en) texugo 12:31, 29 May 2011 (EDT)

Speaking of templates...[edit]

Swept in from the pub

If I remember correctly, we have a template that we use when we adapt significant portions of text for an article from the corresponding article in a different language version. Can someone point me to it? I'm going to take a break from districting Buffalo for a little while and work on Gaspé Peninsula with the hopes that it can be an OtBP in summer 2015. I've got some amazing photos in my archives from my trip there in 2012. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 03:59, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

{{translate|de|Argentinien}} and {{translated|de|Tegernsee|9th December 2013}}
--Andrewssi2 (talk) 08:48, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is it absolutely necessary to include the date parameter? I am planning on making multiple edits over a span of time. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 13:54, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not completely necessary. The idea was that the origional article (in German for example) would continue to evolve over time, and therefore the date parameter would indicate whether it is worth to look at the source article again for a newer translation. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 14:34, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Translate template position[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Just an aesthetics point, but any objections if we move the {{translate}} tag from the top to the bottom of an article pages? Do not like the idea of the first thing visitors to the site see and read is an maintenance tag or two. --Traveler100 (talk) 09:35, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would support that. Particularly since these templates tend to sit on articles for years, and since the editors most likely to bring in translated content will likely find these articles via Category:Articles needing translation, unless an editorial template is alerting a user that something may be wrong with the article I think we should be careful that it doesn't distract from the article content. Port of Spain is an example I stumbled on last night where my initial assumption was that the article had major issues until I read the templates and noticed they were just callouts for translation. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:25, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would also support this, as some readers who've not seen Wikivoyage before may see these templates as meaning that there is something wrong with the article. Also, what about moving them to the talk page? Category:Articles needing translation would be categorised with talk pages instead, but it wouldn't be hard to work out which page actually needs translation. But moving the templates to the bottom is fine 😊.  Seagull123  Φ  17:11, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Does this template have any value?[edit]

These templates are added to articles, and then ignored by editors for years and years and years. Most editors know that other language versions of Wikivoyage are are good source of material. These tags just add clutter to our articles. Ground Zero (talk) 02:11, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It makes sense if this populates the articles to a single maintenance category, such as Category:Articles needing translation, but it doesn't – I think it should also be transcluded on the talk page. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:31, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
