Responsive Design[edit]

@Traveler100: I have updated this template to match guidelines on mobile design at Template:WikivoyageSister/sandbox. As you'll notice, it no longer changes depending on desktop or mobile view. Instead, it changes based on the resolution of the browser. You can test this by resizing your browser window. This is called responsive design, and is the preferred way to do mobile sites. It is a little rough now, but incremental changes should be very simple to make by editing the styles.css file. If there are no problems, I will be expanding this design philosophy to more templates. Then, hopefully, we can shut off the deprecated mobile site and switch to the preferred one, and this will improve performance, greatly simplify the structure of the page, and allow us to easier troubleshoot problems. @ARR8: this is a better solution. Just starting to discover the details of this topic. Agree we need to review Wikivoyage code and gradually fix pages to be responsive to browser size.--Traveler100 (talk) 05:51, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Getting the idea. Create {{Communityportal}} using at Wikivoyage:Community portal/sandbox. As yet not worked out how you centered the icons on the page or how to make the gap between them wider. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:14, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the code there to do centering. It is much simpler with that template than with this one, and so should be more obvious what is going on. The gap between items is controlled by the padding property. ARR8 (talk | contribs) 15:53, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Again the issue now with template. When on another page it shows in mobile view, when on the main page does not show. --Traveler100 (talk) 12:19, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm now convinced the issue is related to the deprecated main page we are using. Once we phase out mobile specific code and switch to a responsive design for all templates, everything should display properly (if this is indeed the case). ARR8 (talk | contribs) 15:53, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering if it was to do with a mix of methods on the same page, but the sandbox is using the same methods and is not showing the problem. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:14, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity[edit]

@SelfieCity: For consistency, please consider replacing Wikiversity's "Learning tools" with "Learning resources". See Wikipedia:Template:Wikipedia's sister projects and associated discussion. This would make Wikiversity the longest sister project description, but I'm not sure what else would work. Learning is fine, but the others are all nouns rather than verbs. I'm not sure "Resources" by itself conveys the same message. But "tools" just doesn't seem right. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (talk) 18:41, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please consider adding or importing Wikipedia:Template:Edit protected. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (talk) 18:41, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dave Braunschweig:I’ve done the first of the requests. I’m not used to editing templates but I can look into doing the latter. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 20:20, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Swept in from the pub

MediaWiki has a new logo (see mailing list, MediaWiki.org and T268230). Can someone please update Template:WikivoyageSister to use File:MediaWiki-2020-icon.svg instead of File:MediaWiki-logo.svg. Thanks --Nintendofan885 (talk) 08:56, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We should perhaps not rush it. The linked MediaWiki website still has the sunflower. –LPfi (talk) 12:41, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It displays the new logo for me --Nintendofan885 (talk) 13:33, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see the new logo. Ground Zero (talk) 13:39, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see the new logo too. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 15:53, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Same here. I have gone ahead and changed it in {{WikivoyageSister}}. -- Wauteurz (talk) 16:00, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Seems they haven't lessened caching times in anticipation of the change. I still get the sunflower at their main page. –LPfi (talk) 19:38, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the "Powered by MediaWiki" icon at the lower right corner of every page also has to be changed. Why did they change their logo, anyway? Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:55, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The "MediaWiki.org" (project page) link above explains the reasoning. The old logo is a bitmap image (in contrast to vector graphics), with "too realistic" fine details, making it hard to adopt to smaller sizes and special applications. There may also be some "not following modern trends" reasons, but if so, they are not spelled out explicitly. –LPfi (talk) 09:58, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It happened for the same reason that everything else happened: A volunteer wanted it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:55, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, the old MW logo looks outdated and unscalable in 2020s (SVG version exists but it is ugly IMO).--Vulphere 10:10, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I;ve always hated the old MW logo SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 01:43, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
