Promotion to Guide status[edit]

I have been working on this article extensively for the last few days - do you think it should be promoted to Guide status? As far as I can tell, I have met all the criteria necessary to do so, but I want a second opinion. What do you guys think? 82.3.185.12 13:54, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Is it possible to write more on cycling than just a link to a map? I also think you might want to have structured listings under Drink, not just prose. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 15:17, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
First of all, I've been noticing your edits here and can see the article's really taking shape. The Sleep and Do sections in particular look a lot different. The article ticks most of the boxes for Guide, but the areas where it's a bit weak is the Eat and Drink sections. Saffron, the Great Moghul etc. should have proper listings like the three restaurants that already do. Basically the same story with the pubs in Drink. If you want a hand with those over the next few days (I'll be relying on Google, because I've never visited Eastleigh), just let me know.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:34, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
A few things. The Eat and Sleep listings need a bit of description. Places in Drink should be listingfied with contact information & descriptions, the same for the couple of restaurants in Eat which are just named. And a pic or two in the last third of the article wouldn't hurt.--Ypsilon (talk) 15:54, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Almost Support – Feedback below
  • Cycling needs better work. Listing the website isn't enough
  • See the messages I've left for the time to get to London and Birmingham
  • A little more description needed for the eat and drink, as guide articles usually have a description for the eat.
Otherwise, I'm in favour of upgrading this. SHB2000 (talk) 21:46, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

@ThunderingTyphoons!: Thank you for offering your assistance. I'm starting now so feel free to help if you want to. 82.3.185.12 16:56, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

I will, but there's no point me editing at the same time as you, or there'll just be a bunch of edit conflicts.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 17:49, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: I see. I'll tell you when I'm done. 82.3.185.12 18:18, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
@82.3.185.12: Okie-dokie. BTW, before you add any more chain restaurants, you might want to read WV:Boring. We generally don't list branches of (inter)national chains, because it's assumed that most travellers are more interested in trying something unique to the place they're visiting, and even if they're not, it's really easy for them to find the nearest branch of their favourite fast food place. Eastleigh apparently has no lack of independent restaurants, so there's no need to list the likes of Greggs, Maccys, KFC etc.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 18:56, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!, SHB2000, Ypsilon, Vaticidalprophet, Ikan Kekek: I am going to stop editing this page now and come back in a couple of days. I have a list of restaurants for Chandler’s Ford and Fair Oak to add to the list. I am well aware of the 7+2 rule, and I am planning to put them into smaller categories (maybe different types of places, e.g. Chinese, Indian etc.). I am also going to remove some places per WV:Boring, however I think it will be easier for me if I add all the places first, them remove some and categorise the rest. 82.3.185.12 20:37, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Don't worry too much about long lists of restaurants. List everything worthwhile and subdivide as useful. I'd keep price divisions as primary and then suggest subsections within those price categories. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:42, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
If you want to split them, do User:KevRobbSCO's restaurant style. SHB2000 (talk) 21:45, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@ThunderingTyphoons!: Although South Hampshire’s area code is 023, Southampton’s area code is 0238 and Portsmouth’s is 0239. I am going to put it back to that for now. 82.3.185.12 09:07, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, but that's not true. The area code for the entire 023 area is... 023. You should read this Wikipedia article, because you're not alone in believing that 02380 is the area code for Southampton (the page W:02380 even redirects to that article). And if you don't believe Wikipedia, try using your house phone (if you've got one) to dial an Eastleigh landline with just six numbers, i.e. omitting 02380; it won't work.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:12, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
There's a reason I noted in this article that's it's a common misconception, and also that it's unfortunate that most Eastleigh numbers start 02380, because it makes everyone think that's the area code.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:13, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Most signs in Eastleigh say 02380 XXXXXX or just XXXXXX (although these might have been from when the area code was 01703). 82.3.185.12 09:16, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
I believe you, but they're still all wrong. Many signs in London say 0207 XXXXXX or 0208 XXXXXX, even though the area code is 020. It's just one of those things, because the vast majority of UK area codes have five digits (e.g. mine is 01252). As said already, I noted the misconception in the article because it's very common and easy to believe.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:26, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: I see. You do occasionally see 80XXXXXX, although just XXXXXX is more common. Thank you for explaining that to me TT! 82.3.185.12 09:32, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: who doesn't have a house phone ;) SHB2000 (talk) 09:38, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Eastleigh used to have a five-digit code (01703) just like Aldershot, although they changed it to 023 instead. Although this Wikipedia page says Southampton’s area code is 02380. 82.3.185.12 15:58, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Most of the articles for towns in Hampshire - and the article for Hampshire itself - use +44 23XX XXXXXX rather than +44 23 XXXX XXXX. Is it best to change it on all of them or would that just take too long? 82.3.185.12 16:40, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Should we change it to +44 23 XXXX XXXX? This Wikipedia page says Southampton's area code is 02380, and the phonebook uses 0238X XXXXXX. As well as this, most of the articles in the Southampton/Portsmouth area (including Hampshire's article) use +44 23XX XXXXXX. It would probably take quite a while changing it on all of them. 82.3.185.12 17:52, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't get these pings. The numbers should be changed, but as you said it will take a while. There's no immediate rush to change them, because they've probably been like that for years, but as I visit articles gradually I'll change them; you could do the same if you wish.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:01, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @ThunderingTyphoons!: And before you told me above I was changing them to +44 23XX XXXXXX. 82.3.185.12 16:04, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

It may be possible to revert those, rather than changing them back manually. But it depends whether there are later edits that conflict.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:09, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: I see. 82.3.185.12 16:29, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

I'm done[edit]

@ThunderingTyphoons!, SHB2000, Ypsilon, Vaticidalprophet, Ikan Kekek: I think I have done all I can to improve this page. Feel free to check it out and tell me whether you think I should upgrade it to Guide status or not. 82.3.185.12 16:36, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

@Ground Zero, AlasdairW, Crouch, Swale, Nricardo, ShakespeareFan00: Any thoughts? 82.3.185.12 16:46, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
Would still be good to have some kind of descriptions for the sleep listings, maybe from their websites but otherwise it could probably be promoted to guide status. For future reference, you can have a look at articles we have previously featured on the Main page: Previous Destinations of the month for bigger and more visited destinations, Previously Off the beaten path for smaller and less visited destinations, and Previous Featured travel topics for travel topics (itineraries, cuisines, phrasebooks, historical and cultural topics etc.) to get a picture what guide articles should look like (they're interesting reading too :)). --Ypsilon (talk) 16:57, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
@Ypsilon: Okay, thanks for the advice. I will try to do that. 82.3.185.12 17:26, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
No problems, and there's of course no rush. --Ypsilon (talk) 18:07, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
Not yet. On a quick look I saw a few things that are not perfect: The page banner is a photo taken near Curbridge, which is not really in the scope of the article. Understand has a sentence about Bishopstoke which has a blue link which takes you back to where you started from. The Concorde Club is not a "see" listing unless it has something like an exhibition on its history - it is do or drink. Connect has nothing about phone reception, wifi, post offices etc. Hotels have no price ranges or descriptions. Generally I would prefer to wait a few months after the post lockdown reopening to see how things work out. AlasdairW (talk) 19:10, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
This looks to me to be pretty close to Guide standard already. Many of the comments in the prior section (and some of my bullets below) seem more appropriate for an article seeking Star status. However:
  • I want to reiterate the comments about Get around > By bike. It doesn't need to be long, but include a sentence or three on the main routes. (In my pet Star article Caldas da Rainha, I stuck Bicycling under Do > Outdoors, as I felt it was more practical as a leisure activity than as transport).
  • The Eat listings could do with a bit more description beyond restating the cuisine already mentioned in the subsection header. Maybe mention especially good dishes / house specialities, decor, or standard of service.
  • Under Connect, I don't think that eastleigh.online complies with Wikivoyage:External links.
  • Under Go next, break up the second bullet into separate bullets for each place, mentioning at least one interesting sight in each.
  • I know prices are difficult, as people order different meals and hotel rates depend on many factors, but try to give travellers some rough idea of how much they can expect to spend on eating and sleeping establishments.
Nelson Ricardo (talk) 20:52, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

I like everything except the "by bike" section. SHB2000 (talk) 23:18, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

@AlasdairW, Nricardo, SHB2000: Thanks for the advice. 82.3.185.12 05:55, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
@Nricardo: Prices and opening hours are probably not the best thing to add right now, as they are constantly changing due to the pandemic. 82.3.185.12 19:54, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
@SHB2000: In the Travelodge Eastleigh Central listing in the Sleep section, I can't get the convert template to say "100 metres (0.05 mi)"; it either says "0.06 mi" or "0.1 mi". I have typed it manually for now, although it would be good to get the template to be able to round to numbers that are not powers of 10. Since you are a template editor, I thought you were the right person to ask. 82.3.185.12 20:23, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm getting ~0.06 miles. 0.05 miles is only ~80 meters https://duckduckgo.com/?q=100+meters+to+miles&ia=answer https://duckduckgo.com/?q=.05+miles+in+meters&ia=answer Nelson Ricardo (talk) 22:19, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
I'll try and fix it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs) 22:24, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
I can't seem to do it. Perhaps try and ask an interface admin? SHB2000 (talk | contribs) 22:25, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
@SHB2000: Okay. It doesn’t matter anyway. It’s fine without the template. 82.3.185.12 06:09, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, everything looks good to me. Crouch, Swale (talk) 10:02, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, these are the things people think should be done to promote the article to guide status:

  • Yes Done Add more description for the "By bike" section
  • Yes Done Add information about how to get to London and Birmingham
  • Yes Done Add more places to eat
  • Yes Done Add more places to drink
  • Yes Done Split up the "Go next" section
  • Yes Done Add description to the hotels
  • Yes Done Promote the article to Guide status

I will try to update this list as I complete these things. 82.3.185.12 17:12, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

@ThunderingTyphoons!, SHB2000, Nricardo, Ypsilon: I have tried to follow your advice to the best of my ability, and I have promoted the article to Guide status. Thanks for all your help. 82.3.185.12 17:51, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
@AlasdairW: The banner is of the River Hamble, which is technically in the Borough of Eastleigh. Feel free to make a new banner if you want to though. 82.3.185.12 18:02, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Fareham appears to cover this area slightly more than this article, in that it has a listing for Bursledon Brickworks (should this listing be moved here?) Maybe a sentence could be added about the River Hamble - are there any riverside walks? The banner technically is too small an image, so it would be better to replace it. Do you have any photo suggestions - either pictures already in Commons, or could you upload a photo? AlasdairW (talk) 20:16, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
@AlasdairW: Do you think it would be possible to crop one of the photos on Commons? 82.3.185.12 06:56, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes. Can you suggest any that are over 1800 pixels wide? If you list some possible images, I am happy to crop them. AlasdairW (talk) 12:33, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
@AlasdairW: Here are all the photos over 1800 pixels wide that I can find: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]. I also found the photo the current banner was cropped from - although this is only 640 pixels wide. 82.3.185.12 16:27, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Number 5 is my personal favourite. 82.3.185.12 16:28, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
Bandstand banner
Thanks for looking. The selection is disappointing, but here is the replacement. Unless anybody objects or comes up with something better, let's use it. AlasdairW (talk) 21:03, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── That looks fine to me. 82.3.185.12 21:07, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

@AlasdairW: I have changed the banner to this one. 82.3.185.12 14:41, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
@AlasdairW: The new banner looks brilliant, thank you for making it! 82.3.185.12 13:01, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Star nomination[edit]

I have nominated this article to become Star status. 82.3.185.12 18:02, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Edit conflicts[edit]

We can't both edit at the same time, because we're overwriting each other's edits. I'm stopping for now.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:36, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

@ThunderingTyphoons!: I probably won't be editing it any more today, unless there are any suggestions on WV:Star nominations. 82.3.185.12 16:34, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know, mate.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:40, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: You're welcome. 82.3.185.12 16:44, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Pubs[edit]

I'm not really sure which pubs to include per WV:Boring. Here are a list of five pubs that were on the article but were removed. Which ones do you think should be added again?

  • The Chamberlayne Arms (Marston's)
  • The Wagon Works - formerly The Tavern (Wetherspoons)
  • New Clock Inn (Hungry Horse)
  • The Cricketers Arms (a Greene King pub)
  • The Hiltonbury Farmhouse (a Lantern Inn pub) - this was listed as an 'Eat' listing. 82.3.185.12 18:18, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Sorry it took me a while to get around to this. I'd say all apart from the Hungry Horse can be reinstated, since they're mainly about food, and the food is not great. The rest all look like nice places to spend some time in.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:15, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Reinstated THF to 'Eat'.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:41, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Thank you. 82.3.185.12 16:29, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: I have added all the pubs on the list except for the Wagon Works to the article. 82.3.185.12 16:53, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Nice.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 17:30, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
