Welcome to the Arrivals Lounge

The Arrivals Lounge is a place where learners on Wikivoyage can ask questions about the website; in particular, questions about formatting, templates, or any problems or concerns. Experienced users can answer their questions and help them learn more about how to use the website.

For travel advice, please ask at the tourist office instead.

To start a new topic, click the button below entitled "Click here to ask a new question", so that the new topic gets added at the bottom of the page, and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~). To see the archives, please visit the archive for the month you are looking for. For example, Wikivoyage:Arrivals lounge/Archives/2018/September gets you the archives for September 2018. Archiving is done automatically after one month per discussion. There is also a page with links to archives; see Wikivoyage:Arrivals lounge/Archives.

Map of the world

Yes? Do you have a question? There is a selection of world maps e.g. at Maps of the world at Wikimedia Commons. At Wikivoyage, there is a world map (actually two) at Destinations, and the dynamic maps at most pages can be zoomed out to be the same world map as the dynamic one there (with different markers). –LPfi (talk) 08:41, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@LPfi I do have a question. How often does the Destinations dynamic map get updated? I have created new pages (Jičín in December 2023, Kuujjuarapik in February 2024 and Kugluktuk in June 2024 as examples). All have not been added to the dynamic map, which makes me question if that map is still an accurate representation of all destination pages in Wikivoyage. What can I do to help WikiVoyage

[edit]

Other than editing, is there any way I can help Wikivoyage in the real world? RockTransport (talk) 15:29, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

You can always tell people about our project and introduce them to editing by running beginners workshop. Not everyone knows about Wikivoyage and many do not think they have the expertise to write for Wikipedia. You can also take photographs of attractions, local restaurants and hotels and upload to Commons. Some of them are marked in green (indicating that photo is already available) in WikiShootMe! while others are marked in red (indicating that we don't have a photo of that place but would like to have one). And sometimes, even though a picture is available, it may be blurry, low resolution or taken 15+ years ago and we would like to get an updated photo. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:47, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the follow-up message, but could we do an event for Wikivoyage or something else? RockTransport (talk) 15:49, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are definitely edit-a-thons that get organized to have groups work together to edit or sometimes classes where part of the students' responsibilities are to update the travel guide (e.g. here is a current example). If you want to get even more involved, there are grants issued by the Wikimedia Foundation that could pay for something like travel to a certain place to document it or maybe building up some of the infrastructure of the site or creating an app. Those are obviously much bigger investments of time and talent and such, but if you're motivated and have the capacity, they are all options to help. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:36, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for replying to this! I was thinking like representing WikiVoyage at like a sports game to promote it, or helping out in a public place. Thanks for the suggestions, though! RockTransport (talk) 17:49, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@RockTransport For in-person events, check if your country/city has a movement affiliate. Contact them and see if they have upcoming wiki activities planned. Typically, on January 15 (or the weekend close to it) is Wikipedia Day and many editors organize offline editing events. Since many typically don't edit Wikivoyage, you can introduce them to this project! OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:59, 18 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I want to contribute on Wikivoyage

[edit]

Hello I'm a contributor on wikipedia from Burundi then i want to know much on Wikivoyage, such as to use it contributing on it. Then after knowing it i wish i can teach others who we are together and some online meetings, i'm ready to attend them in order to know many things. Thanks Steve Uwimana (talk) 21:20, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I put the standard greeting for new contributors on your talk page. If you have questions after reading that & some things it links to, ask here or in the pub. Pashley (talk) 21:25, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Of course you might contribute to the Burundi article, or articles on your town or region, or perhaps related topics like German East Africa, Lake Tanganyika or Great Rift Valley.
One thing I notice is that the Burundi article has red links for some cities and most of the national parks; if you could create articles for some of those, that would be quite useful. Pashley (talk) 22:17, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
yes i can contribute them so how can i contributee them because i tried even to insert their images or add some links on the parks but it didn't work. for sure if i can know to create them it may be better than, so can you please give me some instructions in order to know it faster. Steve Uwimana (talk) 22:40, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
See User talk:Steve Uwimana. Pashley (talk) 01:49, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, if you describe the steps you took and what exactly did or did not happen, it is much easier to help. Did you push the "Publish page" button? What happened? Or did you never get that far? (There is nothing in our logs.)
(Images can be a mess for copyright reasons, except photos you took yourself that aren't about modern architecture or art. I am happy to give more exact advice on what to do with possibly problematic images, or any other problems. If there are no copyright problems, then you can click the "Upload file" link and then the link to the upload wizard on Commons or click the direct link in this sentence.)

Map coding

[edit]

Hello, I'm having a look at Jeju#Regions, and there seems to be code (mapshapes) for each listed region. Is that meant to do something? Further, is there a system for picking the colours, or are they chosen at random? Since Marado is there, I thought it might be useful to add Gapado as well. Thanks, CMD (talk) 07:45, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes. The mapshapes should colour the regions in the dynamic map created by {{mapframe}} (in this case below in the Cities section). However, they depend on the Wikidata item being linked to the appropriate shape at OpenStreetMap, and in this case only some regions are (only Seogwipo-Si?), and to avoid confusion the shape opacities are set to 0, i.e. they are invisible. As the shapes get created and linked (or whatever is needed), one can adjust the opacity to some suitable other value (or remove the parameter, if the default is sensible).
The colours should be standardised, but I don't remember where they are listed.
LPfi (talk) 12:05, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
The standardised colour scheme is listed at the (unfortunately named) {{StdColor}}. It might be somewhere in the Wikivoyage namespace as well, but that template is what I usually reference.
Wauteurz (talk) 14:20, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both. Fiddling with OSM is still slightly beyond my knowledge base. I'm not sure how you for example know it is only for Seogwipo-Si. Nonetheless, thanks for answering the questions. CMD (talk) 06:50, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
