June 2018 Votes for deletion archives for July 2018 (current) August 2018

I was searching through the deletion archives for the Marriage in China discussion and came across this one, which was originally voted as "keep" when it was nominated for deletion in 2013. I know we don't normally delete real places, and we don't normally but places up for nomination again, but this redirect is just silly and it's crazy this didn't get deleted the first time: who would type a redirect for a country name and put a period at the end? Should we create redirects for every single place in the world and add periods just in case someone happened to enter a period at the end? I'm saying delete because this is just a pointless redirect. Also, I don't want to hear the "redirects are cheap" excuse for keeping it again. Selfie City (talk) 14:35, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: As I understand it, the argument against deletion was that Russia is a transcontinental country and this redirect was a workaround so that destinations east of the Urals don't end up breadcrumbed to Europe. Is that still the case, or have we found a more artful solution in the intervening time? -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:04, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I kind-of get it. But it's only working as a redirect, right? Why couldn't we use Russia (Europe) and Russia (Asia)? Selfie City (talk) 15:08, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or perhaps we should just assign Russia with one particular continent - people often just include it as part of Europe. Selfie City (talk) 16:05, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That "kludge" was originally implemented as Russia (Asia): "#REDIRECT [[Russia]] {{ispartof|Asia}}" and was abandoned in favour of putting Russia in Eurasia. Other language Wikivoyage projects may have handled this differently; I recall ru: having put "Russia is in Europe" because someone felt that culturally or linguistically it fit Europe better than Asia. Well, if we now have a new "tactic" for dealing with this, we may as well delete the redirect, right? Selfie City (talk) 23:45, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Result: deleted. Selfie City (talk) 21:21, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty pointless redirect. People think they're getting something which they then aren't getting. Hobbitschuster (talk) 12:02, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pointless redirect, badly formatted name. Pashley (talk) 17:09, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If it was "Middletown, PA" or "Middletown, Pennsylvania", that would make sense, but having no spaces and poor capitalization makes it all totally different. If this hadn't been up for 12-13 days this would be a good speedy delete candidate. Selfie City (talk) 01:16, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear article title that should never be used for anything as it is way too generic. Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:46, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page deleted. Pashley (talk) 23:30, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Hobbitschuster (talk) 00:18, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another "redirect that disappoints". Either make it a proper article or delete it. Plus it is quite conceivable that those three letters mean something else, somewhere else. Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:35, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A real place per w:Voi so the redirect is OK, but some text mentioning the town should be added to the target article. Pashley (talk) 22:13, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Although there was an article before it was a redirect, I doubt that any of that content was used anywhere - certainly not in the target article which does not even mention Voi. If it is not deleted, then please add a sentence about Voi to the article. AlasdairW (talk) 22:17, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
