Happy New Years![edit]

I felt like saying...between you and Gorilla Jones, you two successfully created 10 star articles this year. Congratulations! Looking forward to more in '08... PerryPlanet 22:09, 31 December 2007 (EST)

Closings[edit]

So you don't have to slog through my mass of recent edits to find them - Mas in Chicago/Wicker Park and Cafe Suron in Chicago/Rogers Park are closed, and I deleted a bar in the Chicago/Near South that had virtually no description or info beyond the address. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 16:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)

Oh, and the Uptown map still needs Spacca Napoli. Thanks! (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 17:44, 5 January 2008 (EST)

Try (m|M)(i|I)(k|K)(e|E).*(m|M)(e|E)(t|T)(t|T)(e|E) ~ 203.144.143.4 06:38, 9 January 2008 (EST)

You might also want to add m-ikemettedefensefund\.org (without the hyphen) [2] - the above should catch it, but probably worth adding this too just in case ~ 203.144.143.4 12:40, 9 January 2008 (EST)

If you'll be around to re-protect it in 5 minutes, could you unprotect it? ~ 203.144.143.4 15:18, 9 January 2008 (EST)

Sure. Btw, the phrase you suggested cast too broad a net. For some reason it caught up this edit. --Peter Talk 15:21, 9 January 2008 (EST)
I think the problem was an extra blank line that crept in - I think it blacklisted every page, regardless of content. Anyway it's back in again now and everything seems to be OK. If it all goes pear-shaped, just revert the lot. Thanks. ~ 203.144.143.4 15:43, 9 January 2008 (EST)
BTW - did you mean to delete the dtdbxd0\.cn line [3] - ?

"Penzenskaya Oblast" looks like an alternative name - how about incorporating it as Penza Oblast (Penzenskaya Oblast) is a region in... or something like that? Then if someone searches for either "Penzenskaya" or "Penzenskaya Oblast" (which I'd guess must be possible/likely as that's the name of the Wikipedia article) the Penza Oblast article will show up. ~ 203.144.143.4 01:40, 11 January 2008 (EST)

Doesn't the redirect serve this purpose? I purposely avoided transliterations of adjectival names, since that goes against general English naming conventions. --Peter Talk 02:09, 11 January 2008 (EST)
The redirect does help, albeit in a rather roundabout way if you "Search" as opposed to "Go". Anyway, I think it's definitely worth having some form of ultra-simple confirmation on the page that the two names do refer to the exact same place - lots of people will have absolutely no idea what an adjectival form is. But I'll leave it up to you - thanks for the explanations. ~ 203.144.143.4 02:27, 11 January 2008 (EST)
Nice!
Just curious - why <i> instead of '' - ? ~ 203.144.143.4 02:31, 11 January 2008 (EST)
I don't know exactly what was going on, but I hit all sorts of awful formatting problems using the wiki markup for italics. In part, at least, because the ' is necessary at the end of oblast' to denote the Russian character ь. --Peter Talk 02:33, 11 January 2008 (EST)
I had a play with it, but best I could come up with was ''Penzenskaya oblast' '') which leaves an unwanted space thus: Penzenskaya oblast' ) ~ 203.144.143.4 02:43, 11 January 2008 (EST)

Could you take a look at the (...Vologodskaya oblast’) bit of WikiPedia:Vologda Oblast - is that acceptable? ~ 203.144.143.4 12:20, 11 January 2008 (EST)

Travel guides in Russian[edit]

Dear Peter, I have wrote many articles or made a significant contibution)in Russian Wikipedia (Budapest, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence). Now I started to write articles in Russian Wikivoyage. To my opinion, its level is too low. I can contribue due to my experience. The countries I visited are: Switzerland, UK, France, Spain, Czechia, Hungary, US, Italy. I can write also in English or Hebrew. See my Wikipedia page at [4]--(WT-en) Aklyuch 22:44, 14 January 2008 (EST)

Hi - I made a few edits to the entry for Morogoro, Tanzania, but they don't seem to show up. I looked at the history of the page and saw your userid. It looks like you're an experienced user of this site (I am not) so I thought I'd ask - did I do something wrong in trying to save the edits ? Do I just need to wait for someone to approve them ? I have many more edits for Morogoro, but I thought I'd wait until the first batch go through. Could you please reply at [deleted] ? Thanks. - Albert

Peter - Thanks for explaining. I'll continue to update the Morogoro site. My plan is to move everything from the REDOUBT site to WikiTravel - no sense in hoarding the data when there's a great site like this. Thanks. - Albert

Hi Peter - Living in Morogoro, it's quite useful to have the cell numbers of a few local taxis handy. I think this would quite legitimately be useful information for travelers. However, it seems quite strange to put someone's primary phone number on a public web page. Also, I was thinking that because there are literally hundreds of taxis in the area, it could get to be quite ungainly to list them on the main page. That led me to wondering if there is a precedent for this situation, and I figured that you might know. Thanks, - (WT-en) Albert

traveler vs traveller[edit]

I thought "traveller" was already well established as the default for Wikivoyage - see Main page, etc. ~ 203.144.143.8 22:49, 18 January 2008 (EST)

Yeah, we've been schizophrenic on that because Evan for whatever reason grew up using the English spelling. Like I said, it's not something I care too much about—I'd rather see a policy that encourages spellings local to the destination, so I'm not a big supporter of the American-only rule. --Peter Talk 22:52, 18 January 2008 (EST)
OK to continue standardising on "travell..." then? ~ 203.144.143.4 22:56, 18 January 2008 (EST)
standardizing :=) --(WT-en) Wandering 23:18, 18 January 2008 (EST)
No chance - if it's from one non-supporter of the American-only rule to another non-supporter of the American-only rule, then it's definitely with an s. ~ 203.144.143.4 23:23, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Well, again this is just my view and it's not a policy, but for me the most important thing is the consistency within a single locale. What exactly constitutes a single locale is up for debate, of course—I would argue that any collection of articles that would conceivably wind up in a single book (were such a book to be written) should have a purely consistent spelling/punctuation format. So I would definitely oppose "traveller" changes to Chicago, for example, because there is a published guide that needs to maintain consistency in (American) spelling. All this is not really in line with policy, though. It might be useful to bring this discussion to Project:Spelling, which is a policy I think could anyway benefit from more discussion and review. --Peter Talk 00:19, 19 January 2008 (EST)

Sleep section header in region articles[edit]

Hi, Peter. I noticed that you "restored" a Sleep header to the Arizona article. I believe it is policy that region articles do not have a Sleep section. In my experience that is good policy as everyone wants their listing in the highest geographical level for better exposure, but leaves us sorting huge lists to lower levels where they belong. -- (WT-en) OldPine 07:43, 19 January 2008 (EST)

No kidding! --Peter Talk 15:05, 19 January 2008 (EST)

New user question[edit]

I am trying to add information about Norskedalen (where I work) to Wikivoyage. Being new to this, I did create a user ID to disclose that the information comes from our non-profit rather than a traveler. I added to the 'See' section of Southwest Wisconsin (which is where I saw your name). I am not sure I did it right; the 'See' changed fonts and I didn't touch that, it has a 'link example' in blue at the end of the paragraph, and I wasn't sure if I should create a separate page for Norskedalen? I was just hoping you might give me a bit of guidance if you would be so kind. Thanks —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Svennorsk (talkcontribs)

Chicago[edit]

Hi, thanks for the heads-up about the external links policy in Wikivoyage, I'll be sure to follow it from now on. Please dump anything I added that may be inappropriate. Still, I hope the link to my Blues Brothers map might remain – I know of many fans of the movie who have used it as the basis of self-guided tours of the city, which is an interesting way to get off the beaten path. Maryland map[edit]

Thanks a bunch for the map! I'm really excited to have that sort of quality content in Maryland. One question, though: shouldn't Talbot County be in the Eastern Shore? That's where it was in the Maryland tourism site I took the regions from. --(WT-en) Jonboy 19:29, 6 March 2008 (EST)

Yes! Cecil County. Good thing I don't have to re-take my 4th grade Maryland geography test. (Which I thought was ridiculous, since I had no intention of living here as an adult. Hah!) I'm happy to help out as much as I can. I'm spending the whole of March here (first month w/o travel in 3 years), so I'd be happy to pitch in with any Maryland/Mid-Atlantic projects. --(WT-en) Jonboy 20:56, 6 March 2008 (EST)

I realize this is a little picky, but shouldn't DC be shaded the same not-Maryland color as the rest of the not-Maryland part of the map? Until we have retrocession, it's probably a little less confusing that way. --(WT-en) Jonboy 12:22, 14 March 2008 (EDT)

Looks good, although I can't figure out how to get it to re-load from cache, so I had to go onto shared to look at it. Last December, I explained to a cab driver in Singapore that I was from just outside the capital, and he thought I was from New York. --(WT-en) Jonboy 13:36, 14 March 2008 (EDT)

Ireland Maps[edit]

Peter, I think I've messed up the Ireland maps (serves me right for messing with something I know nothing about!) I was trying to change the spelling of two of the towns shown on the road map, changing Moneghan to Monaghan and Carrick on Shannon to Carrick-on-Shannon. Is it something you can fix up easily, or have I made a complete mess of it!??! Sorry. --(WT-en) The.Q(t)(c) 10:45, 14 March 2008 (EDT)

Peter, firstly, apologies for the delay in getting back, but it was St. Patrick's Day yesterday, and the whole country (it seems) made a long weekend of it! Thanks for the assistance, and for allowing me the opportunity to fix it myself, hopefully I have it right now. Gee, but it's a complicated process, isn't it? Or have I just made it so? --(WT-en) The.Q(t)(c) 11:35, 18 March 2008 (EDT)

borders for Rome districts[edit]

Hi, Peter. I am about to sort out some part of listings in Rome; before I start, just to make sure: do you think there are high chances that you can help with definition of district borders for Rome in the nearest weeks? If so, I will postpone my edits until there some consensus on districts appear; otherwise I can plunge forward immediately with a dozen or two of moves that are clear even for a present district structure. What do you think? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 04:09, 15 March 2008 (EDT)

Yes, I can definitely help! My attention is, as always, divided between different things, but don't wait on my account—I'll join the effort. --Peter Talk 11:17, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
I've done all I could do: moved Trastevere-based establishments from Rome into their district article. With the rest, it's not so easy. I have a dozen or two of good places around Pantheon and Campo di Fiori, but before we have some consensus on borders of districts there, I plan to add my listings directly to Rome--but maybe you have a better idea? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 03:28, 5 April 2008 (EDT)

Dear Peter , please don't merge the Roman districts into a few districts because Rome is so different and full of history that have to be explained in every part of it ! For example with the merged version the Trevi Fountain is located into the Modern Rome ?!?!? or Aventino and Testaccio are merged but they are completely different , the Testaccio one is a popular district of Rome meanwhile Aventino is a luxury district for diplomates !!! I could continue for hours...I was born in Rome and I live in Rome adn this week-end I'll make a rational work into this section and I'll add several information about every district. Ciao (WT-en) Borisgiulivi 10:39, 16 October 2008 (CET)

Просматривая по вашему совету Chicago, я наткнулся там на раздел "Tourist Information" и понял, что я не рассказал о нём в русской статье. Map of Ballymote[edit]

Thanks for the comments. I've updated it a bit, now, does it look any better? By the way, I've left the following question on Wikivoyage_talk:How to draw a map:

Hi. I'm in the process of trying to make a map for Sligo, and I'm getting on OK (I think), but I'd like some advice on how to show two specific things
1. How do I show a pedestrianised street? The main street in the centre of Sligo (O'Connell Street) was a regular road until about a year ago, but is now pedestrianised. How do I show drivers that this road cannot be used by car now?
2. As anyone who has ever tried to navigate Sligo by car will testify, it is a confusing (to say the least!!) mix of one-way streets. How do I show the only direction fo travel on any particular road?
Many thanks. --The.Q(t)(c) 11:18, 27 March 2008 (EDT)}}

Hi Peter

I'm planning a trip to Sri Lanka in August. Given the terrorist activity through out the country, so you think I should cancel my trip and go somewhere else? I was told that if we avoid public transport and stick to the south we should be fine.

What are your thoughts? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 59.154.50.124 (talkcontribs)

Hmm, I'm no expert on Sri Lanka, having never been there myself. I have had a few friends travel there without incident, although that was years ago. The best advice I can give is to stick to the South/West, but you already know that ;) Generally, my attitude is that terrorism should not be a real concern for anyone traveling outside of Iraq—street crime in the average American city is almost always a greater danger than exotic terrorism. --Peter Talk 17:13, 25 April 2008 (EDT)

Your info on the southeast side of chicago is right on, except for the fact that a lot of the stores and restaurants no longer exist. Virgin Gorda Map[edit]

Thanks for adding the map: http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Image:Virgin_Gorda_map.png

Here are some adjustments on the restaurant locations, most minor a couple major.

Put Rock Cafe above LSL Bakery. It's at the T-intersection (yes, it's still the same rocks as at The Baths).

Put Island Pot across Tower Road from LSL Bakery.

Mine Shaft Restaurant is a little inland from the coppermine, on the north side of the road: http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=18.4340976&lon=-64.4298363&z=15&l=0&m=s&v=2

Put Flying Iguana on the lower left cornr of the Airport icon. It's on the south side of the airport road.

Credit for articles?[edit]

Peter, I just made a boo-boo. I made several contributions to articles on Kaliningrad and Murmansk, only to discover that, when my dial-up connection dropped out midway, I was no longer logged in to Wikivoyage when I continued, meaning that my contributions were attributed to "Anonymous." Considering that I brought these articles from almost zero info to having at least basic info populated in most of the fields, I'd rather have some credit rather than Anonymous. In the Murmansk article, I "undid" everything then resubmitted the info after logging on. Not sure if that's the kosher way to do it -- one could steal another's work that way, but I was only repopulating my own. Should I do the same for today's edits to Kaliningrad, or is there another, better fix? -Andrewsyria

Hey Andrew, if you'd like a "cleaner" way of doing it, I could delete the article, then restore it to the point just before you started editing it. Then you could copy/paste in the current version and get credit for it that way. You'd have to hold on to the copied version in the meantime, on notepad or a User:(WT-en) Andrewsyria/Sandbox page. Let me know if you'd like to do that and I'll be happy to oblige. Two other things: you can auto-sign & date-stamp your comments by typing four tildes ~~~~; and thanks for all the awesome work you've been doing! --Peter Talk 01:03, 8 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks. The Murmansk article is undone and redone. OK to leave it as it is now, although I went about it the hard way. As for Kaliningrad, would you mind reverting it to the article before the July 6 edits? I have those on notepad, and I can rebuild it from there, I also found a bit more data to add for some of the listings, so I can build on it, too. Thanks again for your help.

Revert[edit]

why do u delete my portions of data in the document??? id: prithwisaha@ gmail.com

I reverted your edit because it added a tour listing that violates our tour policy. Also, adding a listing multiple times in one page is considered spamming. --Peter Talk 22:33, 18 July 2008 (EDT)

Another revert question - this edit looks like a legitimate question to me, although I don't know the user's history. Would it make more sense to just move that edit to Project:Local spam blacklist? If the user really is trying to edit without touting it would be good to give him some feedback. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:33, 26 July 2008 (EDT)

I reverted that one, because other incarnations of that organization (like this one) were edit warring to spam each and every Hawaiian island article with links to their site. Since then, they've been leaving messages on my talk page touting their site and adding multiple links. That last one was a good deal less egregious, but my revert finger is twitchy on this issue, and I'm not inclined to give a lot of leeway to use my talk page as a touting platform. --Peter Talk 00:35, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

Chicago/Wicker Park map again[edit]

I just noticed that the distance key is wrong. The line representing a quarter mile actually looks more like a half mile. (WT-en) Eco84 11:21, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Chicago/South Chicago Shore map[edit]

The 55th-56th-57th Metra station is mislabeled as "55th-56th-59th". (WT-en) Eco84 12:03, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Other Chicago maps[edit]

Sorry to keep hassling you about the Chicago district maps, just thought I should point out a few more errors:

Near South: The See/Do key is messed up. Numbers 3 and 4 are missing, replaced by numbers 12 (Charter One Pavilion) and 10 (Dearborn Station). Charter One appears as number 4 on the map, and Dearborn Station appears as number 3; these should be switched.

Lakeview: Distance key is off; it's labeled as 0.25 when it's actually 0.5. Belmont red/brown/purple line station appears to be missing.

Near North: Distance key is off; it's labeled 0.5 when it's actually 0.25. The Mag Mile inset might be off, but I can't tell for sure.

Far Southeast Side: The main map is fine, but on the Pullman inset, the Kensington/115th Metra station is mislabeled as "Kensington/111th".

Uptown: Argyle red line stop isn't labeled (not sure if there is space for this or not), and the Berwyn red line stop is missing. The Bryn Mawr red line stop is missing and could fit on the map, but it falls completely outside the district boundaries by several blocks so it probably isn't that important.

North Lincoln: The main map is fine, but on the Lincoln Square inset, the distance key is labeled as 125 kilometers (!!!); I'm assuming this was supposed to be 125 meters.

That's all I have for now. I'd fix these myself if that were possible/if I knew how. (WT-en) Eco84 17:51, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

It's no hassle at all—I really appreciate the criticism. I have the widespread problem of not being able to effectively proof my own work. I've fixed the Wicker Park & South Chicago Shore maps, and will get to the others soon. If you're traveling around the city, I hope you're enjoying yourself! --Peter Talk 18:05, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Hello from atitarev[edit]

Thanks for the warm greetings, Peterfitzgerald. Quick question (hopefully). Do you know how to add quickly an accent to a Cyrillic or Latin letter? Like this: Спаси́бо or Sharápova (I copied and pasted). --(WT-en) Atitarev 09:16, 14 August 2008 (EDT) --(WT-en) Atitarev 09:16, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

For a cyrillic letter is a only way to insert &#x0301; (html syntax for a unicode char U+0301 "Combine acute accent") after a accented vowel, e.g. спаси́бо. For a latin letter you can use either &#x0301; or already accented unicode chars like &#x00E1; for a accented small "a", e.g. Sharápova. -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 10:17, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
I've also imported шаблон:ударение from the Russian version of Wikivoyage, it displays like this: Яку́тск, with the syntax Яку{{subst:accent}}тск. So just subst: the template right after the letter you wish to accent. Hope that helps! --Peter Talk 14:19, 14 August 2008 (EDT)
It certainly does, Thank you! Could use this template somewhere else? --(WT-en) Atitarev 07:33, 15 August 2008 (EDT)
Yes, just copy/paste the template to other language versions. --Peter Talk 17:55, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

Церемония развода караула в Стокгольме
Церемония развода караула в Стокгольме

Питер, помогите ещё раз с английским в новостях ("A guards mounting starts at Saint Petersburg Peter and Paul Fortress", 9 августа). Особенно я волнуюсь, будет ли понятно "a guards mounting"? По-русски это называется "развод караула", нечто подобное, но в больших масштабах, происходит во дворе Королевского дворца в Стокгольме. -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 03:26, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

--Peter Talk 01:35, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

-- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 04:29, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Massachusetts regions[edit]

Sorry about the delay in responding. I forgot about your question and then was actually travelling. You asked if the regions were solid enough to move forward on. It has been noted that the list exceeds the 7 +/- 2 guideline (see talk page). The consolidation option on the talk page there is a decent one. I'll get on it as soon as I can. (WT-en) OldPine 07:01, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

I wouldn't worry about 11 as opposed to 9 for regions, but if consolidation makes sense from a travel perspective, by all means go forward with that. Let me know when it's final, and I'll get working on the map! --Peter Talk 17:56, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

Well, yeah they're stable until someone comes along and doesn't like them :) I believe they're in good shape, though I admit I've been distracted and lost interest in the project (and Boston). I attempted to list every town in each subregion, so I think you can follow where the lines are drawn. Note that the Quabbin subregion in Central Massachusetts carves some towns out of the eastern portion of the Pioneer Valley county subregions. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/20/opinion/20gorbachev.html?th&emc=th(WT-en) cacahuate talk 09:43, 20 August 2008 (EDT)

I don't want to get too much into my personal politics here, but this is a really depressing event for me. I know a lot of people who live and vacation in that area. I hope they're ok, but I don't have many good ways to contact them. From a travel perspective, it's also a disaster for this little country, and for me, since I spent so much effort working on the Gori article, which may or may not have been made very outdated by the bombings & assaults.
It's also depressing to see these countries at each other's throats, when they for so long have had such a great relationship (and depressing since I'm both a Russophile and Kartvelophile...). I think that Gorbachev's arguments fly in the face of international norms of behavior, but not to the extent that the American invasion of Iraq did, so it's awful hard for our government to challenge Russia's invasion even diplomatically. I must add, though, that the popular Russian arguments for the military reprisal seem really hypocritical in light of their campaign to control and keep within the federation Chechnya—a campaign which I thought very much justified. --Peter Talk 17:12, 20 August 2008 (EDT)

Hi from Crowsnest[edit]

Hi Peter, Thanks for the complement. I really spun-off here as I wanted to get something down in text form. My real passion is for OpenStreetMap and I am having fun mapping out the Crowsnest Pass via GPS, see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Canada:Alberta:Crowsnest_Pass

There is a group who have just release a history-route map of places in the Pass. There is no copyright statement so I'm trying to get in touch with the author so see if he/she will license the text under CC. Would be nice to import this into the pages for the separate towns.

Is it legit to take other people's CC work and relicense under CC-SA? Or do you have to exactly match terms?

Cheers, Mungewell.

Yes, if it is licensed as CC-Attribution, you are within your rights to relicense it as CC-Attribution-ShareAlike, since the absence of the ShareAlike clause means you can distribute it under any licensing, as long as you maintain attribution. I've tried fooling around with OpenStreetMap too, but am endlessly frustrated by the fact that I can't use street names taken from non-free content maps! --Peter Talk 16:05, 21 August 2008 (EDT)
It's seems as delirium that a street names may be copyrighted by anyone... :-0 Where you read this, Piter? -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 02:57, 22 August 2008 (EDT)
The street names are not copyrighted, but the maps from which you might get names are. And if that map has idiosyncratic, or especially incorrect, names, then copying them will make the derivative map not 100% free. I still get street names all the time from existing copyrighted maps, but I'm not so perfectionist as OpenStreetmap! In any rate, I certainly agree that intellectual property right laws are often pathological, sometimes downright insane. --Peter Talk 03:02, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the compliment[edit]

Hi Peter. Cheers for the note on my Talk page. The support is appreciated! (WT-en) Tarr3n 13:54, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

Tenderloin[edit]

Hi Peter, I have made all the last minute adjs as per star nom page. I tried to readjust the color areas per 'Loin neighborhoods but wasn't able to snap them neatly to the street grid. I wonder can I ask you to tweak it please?

  • Little Saigon should be stretched (not moved) one block south to Turk
  • Tandoor-Loin should be stretched (not moved) one block west to Leavenworth St
  • The Polk Gulch is a bit off. It's everything north of Geary St between Polk and Hyde St.....it should run right to the end of the map as it technically goes into the next neighborhood.
  • The Tendernob is Geary to Sutter between Larkin and Mason.
  • Finally, for the general Tenderloin area (everything else) it should be light pink everywhere else in between this boundary (except of course for the other colors above): starting at Polk St and Golden Gate Ave intersection and going round clockwise...Polk St....Sutter St...Mason St...Market St...and finally Golden Gate Ave (back to Polk St and Golden Gate Ave intersection)

I hope this is clear, if not let me know. One last thing, looking at it I forgot to put a "1." beside the first drink listing, could you oblige whilst you're at it? Thanks again (WT-en) Asterix 18:46, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

I'm just about done making these changes, but it seems like Pork Gulch and Tendernob overlap between Geary & Sutter, Larkin & Hyde. Should they? --Peter Talk 21:33, 22 August 2008 (EDT)
ooops, sorry....Polk Gulch should be everything north of Geary St between Van Ness Ave and Larkin St. Sorry bout that! (WT-en) Asterix 12:14, 23 August 2008 (EDT)
Should be fixed now! --Peter Talk 16:46, 23 August 2008 (EDT)

St Pete status[edit]

Thanks for your thoughts on the St Pete article. I'm trying to develop it as fast as I can, but if others beat me to it, all the better. As for restaurants, yes, there are a million, but I suspect there will have been significant turnover since 2003. Any Uzbek restaurants you can add would be great - there are too few now, and the one closest to me has been boarded up for about a year now. Would be glad to collaborate somehow on looking into your old favorites.--(WT-en) Andrewsyria 02:12, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

Data Dumps[edit]

In fact I haven't done for some time. I think the best way to do it would be to use Special:Export and Special:RecentChanges to track changes to the site. -- (WT-en) Mark 04:52, 26 August 2008 (EDT)

Chicagoland[edit]

I just added a couple sentences to the Chicagoland article to emphasize the ties to Southeast Wisconsin and Northern Indiana. If you do an article on Lake County (Indiana), then we could specify that that and Kenosha are often included in Chicagoland--either at the beginning, the end or both.

I guess what I'm trying to avoid is having a summary of Lake County that appears both in Northern Indiana and in Chicagoland--likewise with Kenosha and SE Wisconsin. It just seems like bad organization to me--as the sections evolve in the natural wiki way, they either have to be kept manually in synch or else they'll diverge in ways that are not helpful to the user of the site (e.g., having to look two places to get all the useful info--or mistakes being corrected in one place but not the other). Keeping them separate and cross-referenced would be my preference--which I guess I've made clear; my apologies if I'm belaboring the point.

Anyway, since you and I seem to be the only ones currently paying attention to the Chicagoland page, I'm wondering what you think of the changes I've made to it--I'm a newcomer to Wikivoyage and I'm trying to bring the page more in line with the ideal form of a regional article, but I'm not precisely clear what that is. Am I doing the right thing with the attractions, for instance? And was getting rid of the hotels en masse the right thing to do? If those all didn't seem like they had been put there by PR agents, I might have been more circumspect.

(WT-en) Nareek 17:26, 26 August 2008 (EDT)

Do you know of a good example of a sub-state regional article that Chicagoland could more or less follow as a model? (WT-en) Nareek 23:59, 26 August 2008 (EDT)

Colorado regions[edit]

That's an excellent draft map, and it does a good job of pointing out some of the challenges of making Colorado regions. In a "flatter" state, use of latitude and longitude, or at most reliance on highways, usually provides adequate guidance in setting up regions. When regions are defined by mountain ranges (and, usually, the borders of those regions by the resulting valleys), however, things meander, and highly non-intuitive "regions" result if one aims for consistency in transportation routes, regional attractions, and so on. Actually, Arizona is even more of a pain in this regard than Colorado is...

It's probably most practical to consider the "black" region part of Northwestern Colorado, although perfectly sensible arguments can be made either way. One reason is that the northwest region otherwise gets rather short shrift in terms of destinations and attractions; may as well give it Aspen, Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction to beef up the content somewhat, although Aspen "feels" more like part of the southwest or South Central Colorado regions in many regards. For destinations along the border, there are always hard choices -- and one of the things about a mountain state is that the destinations will be along the borders, because valleys bearing the roads, rivers and other things that define the borders are exactly where the cities are built. One challenge is to come up with a simple, tidy description of the resulting western regions, but it looks like you've made headway on that, at least graphically.

To me the distinction between the Denver region and others is less of a problem. One simple criterion works: if it's urban, it's part of the Denver region; if it's rural, put it in one of the others. Your draft does quite a good job with that, although my wife's brother's house probably gets bisected by the western edge of the Denver region ... -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:20, 27 August 2008 (EDT)

Region Maps[edit]

Hi, thanks for the compliments on the Lower Mainland map and the link to the Regions Map Expedition. I like maps so I'd be happy to chip in help out (although slowly since I don't have too much free time and fixing up Vancouver and area is my first priority).

One question about map making -- are we allowed to trace a copyrighted image to make a map? I'd like to think that style things added by the map maker are copyrighted but the shape of the earth and street layout isn't! Thanks. (WT-en) Shaund 11:13, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Help with Duplicate pages for 1 City[edit]

Hey Peter, do you know how to fix a problem of there being two pages for one city? Springboro, Ohio has two pages, Springboro and Springboro (Ohio). The first one is the more up to date version, and the second one has been abandoned. How can I delete the second page, and make sure no other pages link to the duplicate? Thanks.(WT-en) Jtesla16 18:10, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Thats exactly what I was looking for, thank you. Does Wikivoyage have a system of Service Awards or any fun ways to encourage and recognize contributions? You seem due for more than a few. If you're not familiar with the idea | here is an example. (WT-en) Jtesla16 01:24, 1 September 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the help.[edit]

Peter,

Thanks for the help in cleaning up the page. Please bear with me as I'm new. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Tristan1961 (talkcontribs) .

Golden Gate[edit]

Hi, firstly, yes I am bit bummed that no one read the article, however, I was certainly not referring to you — who has diligently read all of the other noms.

As regards me taking the article down 50 mins early...I was unaware, but now that I have checked, yes it was 45 mins early. However, I'm sure it says that we've 14 days in total to have a discussion about it...so if you had of intended on making any changes, technically that would have only left me with 45 mins to rectify — otherwise it would be the "slush pile." Imo, any comments should come in at least 24 hours prior to the deadline to allow the nominator at least some time to rectify the mistakes. (WT-en) Asterix 15:26, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

It was just missing thumb on the image. I've fixed and it is now displaying correctly. --(WT-en) Nick 03:16, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Qualifications for "usable" article status[edit]

Peter, on your Maryland Expedition, you spell out here: Project:Maryland_Expedition#Current_priorities - Very close to usable, and should get there in no time with a little collective push. Needs: at least 2 Drink listings; a couple Get out destinations; addresses, where listings lack them. Are these sort of qualifications for "usable" article status spelled out anyplace? I am currently having a conflict with a new contributor who I believe is promoting articles prematurely. (WT-en) gamweb 14:47, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Wikipedia legal violations[edit]

(WT-en) Gamweb and myself have been disputing over his contributions to Florida pages. I contend that he is data dumping from wikipedia and the yellowpages. The following pages are straight wikipedia-copy-and-pastes: Palatka from wikipedia, Sebring from wikipedia, Canaveral_National_Seashore from wikipedia, Fort Myers from wp, Escambia County (Florida) from wp, DeLand from wp, Sanford (Florida) from wp. These are merely the latest examples I could dig up in his recent edits. I believe this activity to be much more widespread by this user. What can be done to stop this? (WT-en) Jtesla16 19:01, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Fyi: the stuff I fixed up were mere phonebooks of info, not copyvios. -- (WT-en) Colin 22:26, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Wikipedia & Wikivoyage[edit]

Peter, I have attempted to "rechew" any text that I may have seen at Wikipedia as an example. In the case of Canaveral National Seashore, I found a source of Public Domain text from the National Park Service (an agency of the US Government), which Wikipedia cannot claim as their own copyrighted work. However, if you have any problems with anything else I have added here, let me know. I left you a related message on Wikivoyage shared a few days ago, if you could take a look please. (WT-en) gamweb 20:31, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Oh, and I am a Wikipedia contributor myself. I suppose I have to make certain I add any text here first, before adding it to Wikipedia? (WT-en) gamweb 21:13, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
No, the content is yours and you can do whatever you like with it — but it may be useful to note on the Talk page that it really is yours, and not just copied from someone else's work on WP. (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:59, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

Verses[edit]

Питер, я заметил, что вы добавили стихи Тютчева в раздел "Understand" статьи Russia. Может поместить туда профессиональный перевод Анатолия Либермана (взято из Wikisource):

You will not grasp her with your mind

You will not grasp her with your mind
Or cover with a common label,
For Russia is one of a kind –
Believe in her, if you are able...

А вот тут целая куча разных переводов этого стихотворения: [6]. -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 03:08, 16 September 2008 (EDT)

PS: Чтобы не нарушать вашу забастовку по поводу рекламы, вы выберите лучший вариант, а я могу сам внести в статью... ;-) -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 03:15, 16 September 2008 (EDT)

Но вот - "Believe in her, if you are able..."
-- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 02:03, 18 September 2008 (EDT)

Spain regional hierarchy[edit]

Hi Peter: I've finally reorganised the top-level regions in Spain, so please take a look. The Spain page itself might need some adjustment to the layout (I'm not expert enough to attempt that) because of the shorter "Regions" section now.

But maybe you can slot in a new map ;-)

Thanks, Jim (WT-en) Jnich99 09:43, 20 September 2008 (EDT)

Yeah, those regions look great to me! I'll get working on a map, but ideally we should have one more thing done first—we need to sort out the "other destinations" list. None of them should be cities/towns ("other" = "other than cities/towns"), all of them should be some sort of non-city attraction, like national parks, islands, monasteries, gigantic theme parks, etc. And there should be no more than 9; ideally we should have exactly 9. Any suggestions? --Peter Talk 20:46, 20 September 2008 (EDT)

I'll give it some thought! Cheers (WT-en) Jnich99 09:42, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

Dear Mr. Peter,

I understand that you are very passionate about travel. And that you are making great effort to maintain many of the travel pages in this wiki. On the contrary. I would request not to edit/truncate any text without validating that it is right or wrong.

I thought that these pages are for public, to contribute, enrich with information. I have noticed that you have reverted some edits in the past few days several times where as the information added was absolutely correct, valid and more than real.

I also noticed that you are from US. In case you think that this message also needs to be validated, you can contact me (mondarmoni@yahoo.com) for further information on the place. I am going to this place since 2003.

Have a great day

Thank you,

We don't allow touting on our pages, and we don't want our hotel descriptions to read like a brochure. Adding things like "best rooms in Mandarmoni" are not helping our project. We also don't describe every detail of a hotel, just the basics. I kept some of the recent things you added to your hotel, like the price range, which is good to have. We appreciate your understanding what I'm trying to say here, none of us want to continue to have to fight over this and constantly revert each others changes – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 15:37, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
Thank you for your understanding, "Cacahuate". On the same note I believe using the word "touting" is very strong in this case. If you pay a bit attention then, you would notice that, every body should be given equal space to express in a certain way. In this case, the truth is truth. How much one try to negate, it still remains the same. If I understand English, I would say, some of the text still reads like "brochure". The words like "contemporary", "eco-friendly" equally affirms the uniqueness and strides to strike a difference. Anyway! I still appreciate the effort from the bottom of my heart. Hope this would end the "constant revert" fight. BTW,one quick information, Project Digante is much bigger than the resort that the group of people have built, they are deeply engaged in other social activities in the area for last 4 years, it's a dream project for them, not a mere business to scalp money, Thank you again. Hope this information helps.
Everything is expressed in the same way here, from the point of view of a traveler, not from the hotel owner's point of view, that's all. There's a large difference between describing a place as contemporary or eco-friendly (which a lot of travelers care about and want to know) and hotel owner calling their place "the best" – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:25, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
I disagree that everything is expressed in the "same" way. Have you visited Digante? If not then go visit and the question yourself. You are editing something and truncating it to no meaning without knowing about the place. It is best that the traveler be informed, not under informed. If you have a problem with "the best" you can edit that but please be sensitive about cutting out the entire text. Yes!!!! Bengali traveler care about fresh FISH caught straight from the pond and served. And may I ask you the question: How do you know I am the Hotel owner !!!!!!!!! I felt as a traveler who stayed in most of the hotels at M'moni, that Digante has the best rooms (decor, facility and design). That's all. Now it's up to you whether you will continue to target the text. Thank you.
BTW, I have edited your disliking, using the word "the best"...thank you.
Ooh, I was so tempted to leave in that "homely atmosphere" bit! --Peter Talk 01:20, 27 September 2008 (EDT)
Your edits make you sound like you work for the hotel, that's all... unfortunately several hotel owners/workers in Mandarmoni and a couple of travel agencies have all been frequent visitors to our site and created a little war on the Mandarmoni page, so you'll find that it's a little more difficult than normal to get flowery writing onto that page. Reason #12 why hotel owners shouldn't tout their hotels, it will only backfire – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:14, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

I know it's a bit to ask for, but could you do some proof reading on the article - I'm not a native speaker, so that prose must be perfect part, is a bit intimidating. Maps and stuff[edit]

Hi Peter, thanks for the kind words on the NZ map. As I was putting it up, a question came to mind... What should we do with the old Factbook maps? I'd like to think the new maps are so good the Factbook maps are redundant and we can remove reference to them. :-)

But just in case we're attached to them, let me know. (WT-en) Shaund 01:34, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

Tanzania Regions[edit]

The Tanzania Regions section has "Pembwe and the Southeast" as a region. I believe that it would make more sense to rename this region/page to "Coastal Tanzania" and to remove Pemba (not "Pembwe" that I'm aware of) and either make a new page for it, or move it to the Zanzibar page. I started to do this, but thought I'd ask you first since it looks like you came up with the original TZ region scheme. Also, regarding the map; I will have to figure out how to re-color the regions, and it looks like "Tobora" should be "Tabora" (but then I was wondering if that was intentional). And I may have question about renaming the page. Anyway if you have suggestions for any of this I'd appreciate them. Thanks. (WT-en) Alingelb 11:35, 8 October 2008 (EDT)

-- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 04:25, 14 October 2008 (EDT)

Rome Districts[edit]

Hi Peter I'm Boris from Rome , I've been so disappointed to see you changed again the Roman districts without answer to my suggestions that I left on your talk page last week... I could continue for hours...I was born in Rome and I live in Rome and this week-end I'll make a rational work into this section and I'll add several information about every district I passed this matter to my uncle architecht and town planner professor Racheli ( username Pasquino ) that he knows very well as the Rome districts are divided . Please let me know . Ciao

Rome[edit]

Good Afternoon from Rome My name is Prof. Alberto Maria Racheli , I've been instructed to carry out this work on the neighborhoods of Rome by Boris , my grandson has asked me to fix this issue , because in his opinion this division is pretty weak compared to the rich history of Rome. Basically I agree with him, passionate student of urban planning, that the division should be optimized creating at least 7-8 large areas of the historical center and creating even 4 large areas outside the center and Ostia, with its magnificent ancient ruins. Let me know if you agree to be able to work. Dear Greetings Alberto Pasquino 19:34, 19 October 2008 (CET)

Districts map of Istanbul[edit]

Hello. Here are the changes I suggest to be made on the districts map of Istanbul:

  • Princes’ Islands (those nine islands off the southern Asian coast) should be distinguished from Asian Side with a different colour.
  • Northwesternmost part of ‘Beyoğlu’ should be seperated from Istanbul/Galata, and added to Istanbul/Golden Horn. Drawing a straight line on the same direction/line with the western border of ‘Fatih’ would do the trick.
  • The lowest part (only the very lowest) of ‘Şişli’ should be seperated from Istanbul/New City and added to Istanbul/Bosphorus. Joining of this section to official Şişli district was a highly controversial political act happened about ten or fifteen years ago, just to let a skyscraper (which now houses a hotel which is listed on ‘sleep/splurge’ section) to be built on an otherwise historical area spared from further development.
  • This is not such a big deal, but to be totally correct, Çatalca and Silivri in the west and Şile in the northeast should be greyed out, as they are not really part of the city of Istanbul, but of the province of Istanbul, thus they should have their seperate articles rather than being merged into one of the districts of Istanbul. It’s not exactly same situation, but this may be likened to the difference between the city of New York and New York State. You wouldn’t assign a distict of NYC to, say, Albany, would you?

I don’t know any online city map of Istanbul to create a map out of for Wikivoyage, but I’ll let you know if I come across one one day.--(WT-en) Vidimian 08:18, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

Edmonton Wiki Travel Press[edit]

I am talking with Jpatokal on whipping up a Edmonton travel guide book. I was wondering, since you did a fine job with Chicago, you'd be able to help A BIT with how things work and small edits. Would you be interested? Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 13:34, 15 November 2008 (EST).

Sure, the content (i.e., text) updates are really pretty simple to do. You just remove listings that have closed, report transit route closures, and vet changes made by other contributors. The hard part, which requires a good deal of time and effort, is the maps. First, you have to change the maps to meet Wikivoyage Press' standards—this takes a ton of time. (I spent an average of 3.5 hours per map conversion and 40 minutes per article conversion—but by this time I was already very familiar with inkscape.) The biggest changes to the maps are to adjust the color scheme for high color contrast (Wikivoyage_talk:How_to_draw_a_map#Increasing_color_contrast_for_better_printing), to bold and darken text, and to change the size to exactly 1731x3008 pixels (or 3462x3008). That last task is very tricky, but you'll note that all maps throughout the Chicago districts conform to these standards (this one does too). So to get working on a WTP book, you'll need to get very familiar with Inkscape. Once you've already got a book out, the main task will be to update maps as listings are added or removed—this isn't too hard, but it is a bit of a pain to deal with all the uploads every month on top of the map editing itself. --Peter Talk 14:05, 15 November 2008 (EST)
Well Peter, it'll all probably be fine for me, because I'm not doing the maps:P. Shaund and PerryPlanet have done the maps-so they'd need to know this. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 14:10, 15 November 2008 (EST).

darmstrong[edit]

I have something to pick at you. What I don't get is how you can revert my edits to an edit made by a user who is so blatant in the obvious fact that she is confused and thought it was a destination. I was trying to help! Then you say" User pages are for whatever the person wants to speak of", but yet they can't talk about their company that they work for. Now I know it can be considered an edit, yet you are letting people do mistakes and not helping them, but yet are getting rid of perfectly formed wrods about people's company which a lot of I don't think want to ad, they just want to talk about their working situation. Some yes, are obvious ads. But I just don't get it anymore. Anytime I try and help with this kind of stuff, I basically get hit in the head. Sorry if I did seem harsh, although I mean what I say. Maybe something isnt clear to me. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 20:31, 18 November 2008 (EST).

OK, several issues here. First, you really need to watch your tone on talk pages, particularly when dealing with new/inexperienced users—you often come off as inappropriately informal/unprofessional as well as aggressive. Second, please don't ever SHOUT again—it's considered very rude to type in all caps on a wiki, or really anywhere on the internet. Third, users can use their userspace in whatever fashion they like, and we will rarely intervene even if a user is using their userspace for touting (only if it's linkspam will we blank the page). Fourth, you should never comment on any page other than talk pages.
Now in this case, the new user might have been using their talk page as a sandbox, to try and figure out how wiki markup works. In that case, having their work deleted and replaced with your comment would be puzzling and possibly intimidating. Or its possible that they wished to write an article about Dekalb, but didn't know how to go about creating it. A more appropriate way to have handled this situation would have been to gently point the user to a link like Project:How to start a new page, or as it is, to point her towards the existing DeKalb article. With the aggressive way you handled it, my hunch is that Debbie will be turned off to contributing. --Peter Talk 20:44, 18 November 2008 (EST)
Sigh...I see where you are coming from. Oy I feel like such an idiot. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 20:55, 18 November 2008 (EST).
Regarding the caps: From you're first day around. it's not just that, but there are several times where peoples advices seems to go straight through you. That being said I think you've really improved lately, and you've been doing really great work on doing welcomes. But please please please, try to take peoples comments and advices to your heart, instead of taking them personal - I haven't seen of any of them as personal attacks, as you sometimes seem to do. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:01, 18 November 2008 (EST)
Well Sertmann, thank you for that. I am sorry, I forget some things, and I really do try to cut back-old habit's die hard. I try to make the most of each comment regarding me. If you think I thought this was a personal attack I didn't-initially maybe-but that last reply no. I am just sensitive, something I've said a couple times. I don't necessarily mean sugar coat or anything, I just take things seriously a lot (not saying you cant gimme a sweet joke or something) and take it to heart (or personal). M glad to see I'm improving. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 21:06, 18 November 2008 (EST).

DC[edit]

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, with all the talk of the inauguration in DC, I figured it would be a good idea to have the travel guide updated. That section was seriously overworked and hadn't been updated since 2006. What I would really like to do is flesh out more of the itineraries. Do some that are "non-monument" tours (i.e. more city-oriented as opposed to just the National Mall). -(WT-en) Epicadam 13:07, 19 November 2008 (EST)

Obama-mania[edit]

We should probably leverage Obama-mania, worldwide phenomenon that it is, a little more heavily. What do you think about writing a brief Obama itinerary? You have a lot of the pieces already. We could work him into the main Chicago article intro as well. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 00:42, 20 November 2008 (EST)

Hey Peter, I was wondering if you could go to my talk page and it should be the second last topic, "Raja1020", and just read over both our opinions, etc. on the topic and could you post your thoughts, I would love a 3rd opinion. I don't mind if you go against me-most people do so on here anyways, just voice your opinion in a polite manner, its a rather awkward situation. Thanks! Hahahaha-that's the hilarious thing, I was guessing you. But it's odd a user runs the site, but then again, you're no ordinary contributer-you're amazing-you're the person behind the Chicago articles that eveyrone looks up to, you've done Wikivoyage Press, and you're quite the admin. Don't listen to him, it's a big fat lie if I ever saw one. I think we need a Wikivoyage cage match to determine who the leader of this site is now that (WT-en) Evan is spending his days creating wikis about wine and life in Quebec. You, (WT-en) Jani, (WT-en) Cacahuate and others can battle it out. Perhaps we can get (WT-en) Mark to serve as impartial referee, and (WT-en) Sapphire can serve as MC if he isn't too busy with whatever he's doing over in Poland. (WT-en) Colin can probably also pitch in somehow, most likely by writing hotel bots and blocking spambots. I'm not sure about (WT-en) Stefan and his monkeys, but I'm sure getting them involved would drive up the TV ratings - everyone loves monkeys. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:51, 23 November 2008 (EST)

I just told you, the moneys in the dungeon run this site - they pay them in bananas, and give them 10 minutes of sunlight every day. Australia's Northern Territory[edit]

Hey Peter, I hope you're well. I was wondering if you would be able to offer me some guidance regarding the pages I have contributed to. I am really interested in getting all the pages up to guide level if not stars, I know it's a big job but I think this region has a lot to offer travelers who are after new experiences. StregaNona[edit]

Hey, Peter, what's up with reverting StregaNona on sight? I don't see anything incriminating in his/her contribution history. (WT-en) LtPowers 19:44, 28 November 2008 (EST)

He's been around for years on the site, and is the reason we have a term called "page creation trolling." His sole goal here is to waste our time (particularly in getting us to discuss how to deal with him), and we decided a while back to give latitude to choose whether to revert on sight, or to take a softer approach. I tend towards the former. → discussion --Peter Talk 03:27, 29 November 2008 (EST)
Sorry to jump in, but this very lengthy discussion resulted from this user. In the case of StregaNona I checked out a number of the places on Wikipedia, and several were for census-designated places (not even towns) that weren't the official address for the hotels listed. Deletion/reversion seems like the best way to deal with this stuff. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:56, 29 November 2008 (EST)
Hey, no problem. I knew Peter had to have a good reason. =) It just looked odd. I didn't think to check the deletion log, which is probably where the tip-off edits are now. (WT-en) LtPowers 13:43, 29 November 2008 (EST)

Millersburg Reversion[edit]

Any particular reason why you reverted Millersburg? I was just told by Texugo that it was allowed to have what I added there. You guys really need to work on consistency if you insist on policing everything. What the heck am I allowed to post if one of you says it's okay and another comes behind and wipes it out? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Silenyjizda (talkcontribs)

Spamming your hotel across lots of pages is not a good way to build trust in your account here. I reverted your edits en masse because you were widely violating our Project:Don't tout policy. I actually only meant to revert your addition of a photo of your lodging to the page, but I wasn't spending a lot of time checking over this, since I assumed from your other edits that all of them were basically undesirable. --Peter Talk 17:36, 30 November 2008 (EST)

I was not 'spamming' my hotel. It isn't even 'my' hotel and is only a place of lodging that I frequent on regular basis when visiting and know a great deal about it and its location. I frequent it and a few others as well which I intended to list. I was only placing the information in the areas of interest in which this particular lodging facility is located using a format that is still used on other listings. While I understand the 'placing it only in the closest city' rule I still find issue with why another lodging facility is listed in Holmes County page but not the one I have tried to list or any others for that matter. The particular one that still stands there is located within walking distance to the one I am trying to list with the same Millersburg city address. Your rules at best are inconsistent and unequally applied as I've seen and pointed out. Having also read over the information regarding the area Amish population on the page I find major points being incorrect or greatly misunderstood and misrepresented. Having friends that are former Amish and Amish alike I was interested in correcting these errors with realistic factual information. However, it appears that anything I write at this point will be deleted en masse by any of the countless people here that are not enforcing a level field. That being the case I have no real desire at this point to really provide anymore of what could be considered valuable information to the average or seasoned traveler. Best of luck having anyone else even try in the near future.--(WT-en) Silenyjizda

No, if you follow the guidelines from this point your work won't be reverted. The rules are not inconsistent, although not all content on the site conforms to them, as it is not possible for volunteers (i.e., everyone on the site) to police every contribution. A wiki is always a work in progress, and if you see room for improvement (for example, if other hotels are listed in inappropriate places) fix it yourself! --Peter Talk 23:15, 30 November 2008 (EST)

Dear Peter, From what i can see from the recent changes list you are erasing the listings for my business acadia park kayak tours from pages for different areas and towns in Maine. Please stop this. Costa Rica[edit]

how come my costa rica cities mods keep getting removed? the city and link of "Quesada - the largest city by far in the country's North, surrounded by hot springs popular with Costa Rican vacationers" is a small city that has 0 tourist value, the one I add Jaco is one of the most popular beach cities in costa rica. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 76.195.60.222 (talkcontribs)

Right, we try to impose a limit of 9 cities or regions per page, what you should do is go to the Talk page and try get a consensus on replacing Quesada with Jaco, also consider signing up, it makes communication easier :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:20, 8 December 2008 (EST)

Monterey[edit]

Hi, Peter!

The policy says external links should go to: "Official tourist offices for a destination." I thought I was following the guides by linking to Monterey County's official travel site. www.montereyinfo.org is the official website of the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau. If that is not an official tourist office for a destination, then what qualifies? (WT-en) Rednikki 13:28, 10 December 2008 (EST)

I looked at your edits in more detail. It appears you've rolled back all the edits. Can you tell me what I did wrong by giving detail on the Grapevine Express (the local public bus that goes to all the wineries), and providing a link to MST's page on that route? It's the official transit system site, which seems to fall under "Official government Web sites." It is also, definitively, the primary source.
I'm really not trying to be a pedant. I just followed rules #1 and #2, and found my edits rolled back anyway, and I'm trying to understand why. I'm afraid to make any more edits, as every edit, even the ones that only fixed the bad grammar, were rolled back. (WT-en) Rednikki 13:32, 10 December 2008 (EST)
Peter, thanks for the clarifications on my Talk page. I'll keep them in mind, and when I have a little more time on my hands I'll make some great revisions! (Also, yeah, apparently my browser was cacheing just that one page, hence my confusion. Grrr arrrgh.) (WT-en) Rednikki 14:50, 10 December 2008 (EST)
Actually, I do have more questions. The official tourism site has sections dedicated to other tourist destinations within the county that have their own pages on Wikivoyage (such as Pacific Grove and Carmel.
If I'm linking to the official tourism site, do I link to the top-level page for the site, or the top-level page for the destination in question? My instinct is to link to the top-level page for the destination, but I'd rather ask and be clear than do it and be redacted. :-)
If linking to the destination page rather than the top-level page: Wikivoyage has Carmel Valley and Carmel-by-the-Sea all in one page, Carmel. Would I link the term Carmel-by-the-Sea to the C-B-T-S area on the official website and the CV mention to the CV area on the official website? On the one hand, it's two links to the site; on the other hand, it's more helpful to the user, since they're two different areas and are located miles apart.
Thanks for helping me get all this sorted! I want to make sure my edits are correct and helpful. (WT-en) Rednikki 15:02, 10 December 2008 (EST)
Thanks again, Peter! You've been a huge help to me in figuring out how best to tackle this. I'm going to go one page at a time and try to get as many destinations on the Central Coast cleared up as possible. (WT-en) Rednikki 12:04, 11 December 2008 (EST)

OK, spend the better part of day doing some research on Okha, in an attempt to get the last two cities up to usable status. And I was wondering if you could lend me your Russian skills, and write nord-stranger@mail.ru, if we could get permission to upload a few of the surprisingly good images at http://oxa.nar(spamfilter)od.ru/photoalbum2.html under a CC licence - from the google translated version I understand that they are mainly interested in receiving due credit anyway. Hi Peter[edit]

I am just wondering, as Edmonton is supposidly CotM next month, will the new format via CotMs change Edmonton being the next CotM because I am getting stuff ready for it and am kind of excited - I mean I hope to make it quite successful. Or, will it just fit into the regular format for the new style? I hope you see where I am coming from and I am totally sorry if this was already brought up as I may have forggotten/didnt read parts. Sorry! (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 17:32, 18 December 2008 (EST).

So willl there even be a CotM next month, I mean if it is coming up next week, it is a short voting time for one next month and you should know at least a day in advance. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 10:38, 19 December 2008 (EST).

Lookiing at that Cotm page and your formula for Mexico City, I can honestly say that three nominations have been made already that look similar to that format for noms: Copenhagen, Calgary, and Edmonton. Although, quite honestly I see where you are changing things, I mean the current format only requires a basic list. It will be also good because the people nominating will have to put work into noms which make it not get spammed as easily and shows the people really care, good work. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 15:08, 19 December 2008 (EST).

Thanks[edit]

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your tactful direction. I guess that was a bit presumptuous to change the heading. Just getting started here.

Please explain to me the reason for not allowing the link to www.dominical.biz. Is this because it is a portal? It appears that links to internal pages are permitted?

Thanks again!

Wondering.[edit]

Manager[edit]

Hi Peter! I remember you saying in the CotM page that we will need someone to manage the CotM system when the new system is impleneted. I was wondering if I could do that. But before I fully agree or anything, would you mind throwing out some of the stuff I would do? I mean, to me, it sounds like an interesting thing to do, but I wanna know what I am getting into. What do you think? I could do well, and be fair! (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 15:21, 19 December 2008 (EST).

Edmontonenthusiast, I just want to point out that you'd have no control over anything really. If someone else came along and decided to update it before you or make changes to something, then that's how it works - the wiki way. Plus, you don't really have to commit to anything, because you do what you can and if you can't do it sometimes then someone else will pick up the pieces. It must really be cold in Canada if it's this cold (just south), so have a fun and cold day! -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 16:06, 19 December 2008 (EST)
Hey, thanks, I didn't mean it in a "controlling" way, just someone who manages it and makes sure everything is properly done and is going by the rules, etc. But thankyou. LOL - about the cold. Actually it isn't too cold here, well it is, but not as bad as Las Vegas and St. Louis are getting lol! But Toronto is getting pretty hard as that's where the storms headed and there's been so many flight cancellations. Edmonton is at -25°C, I don't know what that is in farenheit, but it's just a little below our average for right now (-16°C). Honestly, here, if you bundle up, you should be fine, as long as there is no wind (or under 20 k/hour)- that's when it is bloody murder. Thanks, you have a awesome chilly day too! (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 16:13, 19 December 2008 (EST).
This sort of discussion should be moved to Project:Collaborations of the month since it is about a community process and not specific to Peter. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:12, 19 December 2008 (EST)

Vladivostok map[edit]

From one Russo-phile to another, could you add a map of central Vladivostok to your queue? I don't think I'll be able to raise it to guide status for lack of Buy, Eat, and Drink options - I was there more than four years ago, and didn't do much of the three - but I think it could become a pretty useful article for travelers. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:59, 21 December 2008 (EST)

Yeah, it's in good shape. I would cut it: north where Aleutskaya curves into Oktoberskaya (or even a block or two before, if necessary), east where Korabelskaya ends, and south a little way below the train station...perhaps where Naberezhnaya comes in from the sea. (West, obviously, is the sea.) Does that make sense? A couple of sights will be left out, but that's all right. Thanks! (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 23:40, 21 December 2008 (EST)

Internal compasses and all that.[edit]

Hi peter,

Thanks for your comment.

Montreal is a unique city European by nature and just a bit offset. Although we do our best to make tourists as comfortable as possible, notwithstanding the snow, if you ask directions they will be based on our skewed compass.

When can I expect a visit from you?

District map for Detroit[edit]

Hey, Peter! Detroit needs a map for its districts. I see that you've made some, such as the Chicago one, and I was wondering if you could create one for Detroit? I'm not sure what info you need to create one, so whatever you need to know I can tell you. Merry Christmas! --(WT-en) Local hero 16:28, 23 December 2008 (EST)

Merry Christmas[edit]

Hi Peter! I know we've had it rough together and we have had arguements, but I still want to wish you a Merry Christmas :). Why? You have been extremely helpful despite the Disagreements and have helped me figure out the rules. I really want to thank you. All the best in the New Year :). Happy holidays, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 12:43, 25 December 2008 (EST).

Hoax[edit]

Hi - I see from your userpage you are an admin - I'm a wikipedia editor (generally) and one of our regular vandals has been busy here Draafstein is a hoax - thought I'd stop by and let someone know. --(WT-en) Cameron Scott 18:49, 26 December 2008 (EST)

I just wanted to give you my reasoning and a small question[edit]

Hopefully, this doesn't come across as anything wrong. I don't see how it would. Anyways, the point of me not reading everything relevent to helping me understand a topic in travelers pub is because, well, I don't have the time and I would be completely bored. Besides, I said I would read some of it. I shouldn't have to be bored or feel like I need to read certain things ... rules aside. There is just too much reading because I looked at it and I would rather be doing other Wikivoyage stuff, or, well, living my life. Anyways, you probably wonder why I am telling you this...well just cause you reverted the comment in travelers pub so maybe you didn't understand myside. Anyways, I also have a question. Why did that coment get reverted? I don't see why it was harmful or waseful or bad or against rules. So - to help me for future reference could you please help me by explaining - that would be really appreciated. Hope it's cleared up and we don't get into arguements. Peter's not going to answer you, but I will. Simply put, the topic of the article headings has been discussed to death, and you're wasting everybody else's time if you don't even have the common courtesy to read and understand what the current consensus is before spouting off your own opinions. And whining about how it's "boring" or how you don't "have time to" or you "shouldn't have to" read it is even more obnoxious; everybody else participating did it, so put up or shut up.
