[edit]A little bit of a conflab going on here and here. I am sure you would have found those discussions anyway, but I am giving you a New Year's nudge :). Your understanding of these issues is much deeper than mine and your input would be very valuable. I have already devoted far too much energy to what I think is a needless discussion... --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:43, 3 January 2010 (EST)
Thanks for your supportive comments on the London CoTM page. I am very happy to have seen the article get so much helpful contributions from users and think it was a great way to finish of 2009! I'm happy to do what little I did and look FW to helping with future CoTMs and articles...when people notice the hard work and say something about it, I think it helps all of us to plunge forward! Happy New Year!(WT-en) Zepppep 14:15, 4 January 2010 (EST)

Washington, D.C. neighborhoods map
[edit]Thanks for the recent update to the map of the D.C. neighborhoods. I hadn't realized my neighborhood is now "Kalorama Triangle", but that's probably about right. I'm writing to ask if you do have a larger resolution version of this map suitable for printing as a poster. I see last year you did upload a huge version, too big for Wikipedia even, and wondering if I can get an updated copy of it. Thanks, and keep it up!--Patrickneil 09:51, 6 January 2010 (EST)
- Thanks! Indeed, the neighborhoods are more like layers upon layers, with things like "Golden Triangle" as a layer over Dupont Ciricle, or "U Street" as a layer under Shaw. Anyway, thanks again.--Patrickneil 11:01, 8 January 2010 (EST)
Brunch?
[edit]Finally found some inspiration, Mind giving Copenhagen#Brunch a quick skim, something seems to be a bit off language-wise, but I can't quite figure out what it is that makes it read badly. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 19:51, 6 January 2010 (EST)
How to draw a map
[edit]I have finally had a go at completely re-writing this article to bring it up to date. I am very aware that some of my own personal map-making foibles may have come through, so please do give it a very critical once-over. I am sure though that this is both easier to follow and more representative of our current format and standards than the previous version. I started off thinking I would include instructions for both city/district street maps and region/country maps. That became confusing over-kill, so instead I have advised users to go to the regional maps expedition for specifics on that type of map. That is actually exactly how I learned, so it may not be bad advice. I have also included a section where any map-maker willing to help others with questions can sign their name. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:50, 8 January 2010 (EST)

Far East
[edit]Just discovered when making writing stuff about Khabarovsk, that it is the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District which this region roughly corresponds to, do you know if these districts have any sort of practical implications, or is it just red tape? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 15:03, 12 January 2010 (EST)
- ... And what's the deal with Russians and their dialectical marks? is Хаба́ровск or Хабаровск right for a site like ours? and since you seem to have a better grasp at our pseudo pronunciation than I do, mind fitting one in up in the intro, found Khabarovsk to be a tricky one to get across to the ticket ladies --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 15:51, 13 January 2010 (EST)
Any change you could help with this one. for the Get out section of Komsomolsk? what's that letter after the "r" in "Ul. Memalur?ov", and does it rally say it takes 7 hours to drive the 40 kilometers up there? Cheers --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 08:02, 5 February 2010 (EST)
- Thanks for all the praise :o) My interest in the mapping is for the cities along "my itinerary", once I redo the Korsakov map, my mapping will be complete for the Russian part until I get my computer back, where I have a nearly finished map of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. For now I need to figure out how to do a map of Wakkanai, since they have no street names in Japan! ugh. Getting a map for Vladivostok and more content to make it guide, or near guide, status would be pretty darn neat though - we'd have some pretty good Far Eastern content with Vladivostok in good shape also. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 13:44, 10 February 2010 (EST)
I want to do some work on the Khabarovsk Krai article, but other than a more expansive understand section with some bits about Climate, History and Nanai culture, I'm a bit at loss on what to do with it? Any idea's/themes that springs to mind? especially for the eat, drink, see and do sections. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 14:45, 11 February 2010 (EST)

Qatar map
[edit]A minor point but the Hawar Islands should be shown as dark grey on the Qatar map as they "belong" to Bahrain. Great to the see the Middle East complete. Bahrain and Qatar are both remarkably uninspiring maps to draw :). Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:37, 12 January 2010 (EST)
- Heh, I actually enjoyed doing Qatar for the sheer novelty factor of putting full street names on a country map (all three of them). It's amazing to me that a place half the size of my home county in the States can be a full fledged nation state. I've been thinking for some time, actually, that if Israel/Palestine can be so small but cause such a ruckus, that perhaps we should invade our neighboring county and try to destabilize the Mid-Atlantic. --Peter Talk 22:44, 12 January 2010 (EST)
- I foolishly missed out on that pleasure with Bahrain, where the same was certainly possible. And when you are really bored, you are now safe to take the coloured Labuan pin prick off the Malaysia map as I have removed it as a top level region. Onward. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:38, 13 January 2010 (EST)
Israel map
[edit]Hmm.. I better should have seen that discussion before! I actually thought the whole Gaza thing was a mistake as it didn't have the name Gaza Strip (but just Gaza, which I thought referred to the city). Anyway, I made a map of Palestinian Territories, what do you think of it? --(WT-en) globe-trotter 17:27, 13 January 2010 (EST)

DR Guide
[edit]Hey Peter! Thanks a lot! It's my first time doing this stuff but I've found my way around. If you have any suggestions, please tell me! I wanted to do this service to my country, as I couldn't believe a world top tourist destination didn't have an extensive wikivoyage guide. I use wikivoyage every time I travel, and I hope I'm making a good service to my country :-) Thanks for the support! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Mfa88 (talk • contribs)
Travelodge Ireland
[edit]Peter,
Why do you remove systematically our listings for Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Cork and Waterford ? But you leave online those belonging to our competitors: The G Hotel, Jury's inn, etc...
We are not a Marketing Agency. We are the hotel owners.
We have the right to get our hotels listed on Wikivoyage like the other hotel chains. There is a script proposed by Wikivoyage for that purpose: Hotels: * <sleep name="" alt="" address="" directions="" phone="" email="" fax="" url="" checkin="" checkout="" price=""></sleep>
We need to understand why do you do that. I don't know if I can leave my contact details on this page, but you will find my contact details on Travelodge.ie (Contact section).
Regards,
Kamal Taibi

- You absolutely do not have a right to advertise on Wikivoyage. This site is meant to provide travelers' with guidance, not to serve as a business directory, and the volunteers who work to keep this site useful have a real problem dealing with marketing agencies and owners who spam their businesses across the site. Please see Project:Don't tout. --Peter Talk 11:05, 20 January 2010 (EST)
- Can you stop removing my hotel from Dublin> Sleep> Mid-Range, the owner of the hotel requested I add the hotel to this page. I have the same right as anyone to be on this page. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 87.198.141.54 (talk • contribs)
- You have the right to edit the page, but you do not have the right to have your business listed. The selections of businesses to include in our travel guides is meant to be done on the basis of traveler & other volunteer-submitted recommendations, not on the aggressive advertising of business owners.
- I, and clearly others, dispute your additions, and we operate on the principle of Project:Consensus (see especially Project:Consensus#Status-quo bias). You can make your case for including the hotel if you like, but you will need to convince others that your business should be listed, and I don't think you have done a good job of that so far. Poor behavior on-wiki reflects poorly on your business, and spamming a single business across multiple articles, insisting that you have some right to advertise here, and edit warring, all constitute poor wiki etiquette.
- This concept of a hotel having the "right" to list (advertise) on Wikivoyage and then indignant spammers getting offended, is amusing. :) --(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:34, 21 January 2010 (EST)
Cotswold Water Park
[edit]Would really appreciate your guidance on this one. New user (WT-en) Tristan Thomas has been developing an impressive guide to the Cotswold Water Park (CWP) User:(WT-en) Tristan Thomas/Cotswold_Water_Park. This is an important area in a region of England which I know quite well from way back. I am slightly at a loss to know how it will fit into our regime though. Parts are in Wiltshire and parts are in Gloucestershire. A large number of existing towns and villages could be said to be part of, or adjacent to, the CWP. I can see why he has used a region template. Will it need to be travel topic or is there a neater solution? Please have a look and maybe reply directly on Tristan's talk page where I have started a discussion. Many thanks. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 06:08, 21 January 2010 (EST)

[edit]my name is kevin. i saw ur name on a forum leaving a comment to someone who had wrote about the capiznon language, so i had to ask you because i could not find out how to contact the writer. do you know anything about the bysayan dialects? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 99.184.147.251 (talk • contribs)

- Hello Kevin, your asking about the Bisayan dialects? This refers to the group of languages in the Visayas area which is Akeanon, Hiligaynon, Capiznon, Kinaray-a, Cebuano, Winaray and many more....
- If you want to know more about these languages, just go to my user page... (WT-en) Oxyzen 14:39, 2 February 2010 (EST)
A Russian scam, perhaps
[edit]Peter, this edit appeared in several Russian city articles, repeated more or less word-for-word. I have reverted them all. I have no idea if there is some useful scam information here or not. If so, it could go into Russia. I will leave it to your judgement :). --(WT-en) Burmesedays 23:18, 29 January 2010 (EST)
- If this is going on it's certainly new to me—it would have had to start becoming widespread within the past two years, but that's certainly possible. It shouldn't be copied across multiple articles, and maybe could go in the main Russia article, but it's already covered at Common_scams#Dual_menus, so it might be best to just leave it there, since it's not actually specific to Russia. --Peter Talk 13:20, 30 January 2010 (EST)
- It's not exclusive conditions only for Russia. For residents and russian-speake mans, but non-aborigen, monopolist's taxi (example in airport) offer huge cost too. It's life: don't know - be ready. Еxclusion: state protective fix price for foreigners (fees in museums, etc). (WT-en) Digr 01:37, 6 March 2010 (EST)

Star format
[edit]First, I promise I have looked in the obvious places and am not being (entirely) lazy. Is there a discussion page about star guide format which is not one of the obvious articles? This is prompted by the established convention of omitting email addresses, which is clearly an exception from the "exactly matches MoS" guideline. Not that I disagree with that, but I figured it must be discussed somewhere..... :). --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:12, 1 February 2010 (EST)
- I wouldn't say this has anything to do with star status (I've just been suggesting getting rid of them, rather than making a case for disqualifying articles for star status because of them). You're right, though, that the question of when to add email addresses, and why we haven't been, is unresolved. I've started a discussion at Project:Listings#Email addresses. --Peter Talk 14:16, 2 February 2010 (EST)
When you have nothing else to do (which I think is a rather rare situation :) ), could you please adjust the map of Turkey so it properly shows the other destinations recently linked from country article? Adding Bodrum would also be nice, since it is now in the cities list.—(WT-en) Vidimian 11:56, 4 February 2010 (EST)
- Done. I also wrote up a section for Sümela, although it's just off the top of my head, what I remember from 2005, so it could stand to have a little research on the details! --Peter Talk 13:39, 4 February 2010 (EST)
- Although I haven't been to the place, the section you wrote about Sümela reads fairly good. I'll search and try to add some transport info for the monastery soon. I don't know if there is a second Uludağ on the actual point you put it on the map (and it's likely there is, as Turks are somewhat far from creativity when it comes to naming geographical landforms, many capes along Turkish coasts have the common clumsy name of Karaburun, literally "Black Cape", for example), but the Uludağ listed as an OD in the article should be just south of Bursa.—(WT-en) Vidimian 13:55, 4 February 2010 (EST)
Hull
[edit]Peter, I think the Kingston upon Hull entry should have a lower case 'u' in 'upon' not upper in the name. However, I don't know how to chamnge the page title. Can you cahang it? (87.102.14.110)
- There is a discussion about this at talk:Kingston Upon Hull. I believe it should be Kingston-upon-Hull.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:46, 5 February 2010 (EST)
- Just for the record, you can rename a page by logging in/registering an account, and then clicking the move tab at the top of the page. See Project:How to rename a page for more details. --Peter Talk 11:32, 5 February 2010 (EST)
User names
[edit]Hi Peter!
What to do with user that have weird user names (e.g. User:(WT-en) 上山打老虎) or have sex etc. in the name. I don't want to delete them without discussion but some aren't active for years or appear during crusing recent events and could insult faint hearted user... (WT-en) jan 10:22, 5 February 2010 (EST)
- Deleting userpages is generally not allowed, unless it is to get rid of non-contributing userspace spam, or if the userpage was created by someone other than the user to whom it belongs. Blocks on the other hand, are something we have, very rarely, used for vandals with obscene usernames. The discussion is at Wikivoyage_talk:How_to_handle_unwanted_edits#Permanent_bans, and the current existing ban nomination is Project:User_ban_nominations#Unacceptable_usernames. --Peter Talk 12:25, 5 February 2010 (EST)
- To add to this, deleting users from the registry is not something that is possible for us (perhaps root access would allow this), although a bureaucrat ((WT-en) Jani) can rename an account. Doing so for vulgar usernames used by vandals is not something we have consensus to do, and I'd assume Jani would not support such a practice. --Peter Talk 12:29, 5 February 2010 (EST)

A little milestone
[edit]Today, I uploaded the final Bali map (Lovina). I kept putting this one off as it was more than a little troublesome. Some advice on regions
[edit]The principle of this one has been bothering me for a while. I know that WT has a guiding principle of not repeating information in more than one article. An area where this is perhaps(?) questionable is for get in details. For example, please see this large edit made yesterday to Southeastern Islands . Should we just blandly say "see xxx article" for such info, or does it bear some repitition? In theory, I guess you could say that the detail goes into the higher level (region) article, but that would really weaken the city article and make it less useful for the traveler. Some guidance please!--(WT-en) Burmesedays 19:51, 14 February 2010 (EST)

Peter -- here again. Perhaps as a matter of urgency you could look at the comments on Kingston upon Hull re position of photos on a page. [edit]Re your edit summary: Bolded entries are only auto-indexed if they're two words or fewer; three-word entries are not, sadly. Fortunately, Jani was kind enough to add Template:index for me. =) (WT-en) LtPowers 16:30, 27 February 2010 (EST)
- Oh, and regarding McDonald's, I included it for completeness; it's odd to leave out only one restaurant in the entire complex. (Unless you're suggesting I should also remove chain restaurants like Rainforest Cafe and Earl of Sandwich, which I would have to protest vigorously. =) ) (WT-en) LtPowers 16:30, 27 February 2010 (EST)
- We don't have any sort of blanket ban on chains, even international ones—Georgia's one McDonalds location is a landmark in Tbilisi and belongs in that article. I included Nando's Peri-Peri (South African international fast food chain) in the D.C. guide, since it's interesting enough, fills a gap in the article, and you won't find it most places in the U.S. But given McDs ubiquity, it's not something we really need to recommend or explain, and people will find it if they want it without advice from a travel guide. Oddness aside, the aforementioned reasoning plus the fact that it's closing soon—might as well remove it in advance. And I didn't realize that about bolded terms! --Peter Talk 17:46, 27 February 2010 (EST)

[edit]Awesome job on the Falkland Islands map, and all of the other maps that you and the map team put together. [edit]Nice map, really nice. It arrived at about the same time as my Chad map, and not for the first time we have quite independently chosen similar colour schemes for neighbouring countries :). A couple of points:
- Please have a look at Talk:Chad as I am proposing a small change to the existing region structure.
- I see that you went for an unfilled blue outline to represent a non-permanent lake (in these cases, wadi flood lakes). Looks good and gets the correct impression across. For Chad, I drew a stripy blue pattern for the fill and used a dotted strikeline. I also used a dotted blue line to represent wadis, as opposed to rivers. Please let me know what you think about that. Would be good in future in standardise I guess?--(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:55, 4 March 2010 (EST)

Why all the bias and editorializing?
[edit]I've noticed that many of the pieces of you've written in the Washington, D.C. article are slanted, inaccurate, irrelevant, and misleading.
For example: 'Driving in D.C. if Difficult.' This is your opinion. It is not fact. Plenty of people drive in D.C. without incident. I've been driving in the city for 16 years with no accidents, speeding or parking tickets.
" Expert drivers get major bragging rights" - are you kidding?
"Remember that the plan was intended to confuse invading armies. " Actually, no. If this is true I'd love to see a source. Pierre L'Enfant's plan for D.C. is a grid system bisected by wide avenues.
Ruthless, sadistic, absurd: these words have no place in an objective piece. If you want to write editorials get a job at a newspaper.
D.C. has no more 'street closures without warning' or 'frequent street direction changes' than any other city. How many cities have you driven in? How many countries? There are plenty of cities in the region with worse streets than D.C. Ever been to Philadelphia?
Driving in D.C. is not difficult for me. If it's hard for you, I guess that's something you'll have to work on. There is no reason to say that 'driving in D.C. is hard'. It is not hard. I think it is safe to say that driving in D.C. can be stressful, dangerous, and infuriating, but 'difficult' must go. (WT-en) Michael 3000 02:53, 9 March 2010 (EST)
- It would be helpful if you placed your comments in one place Michael. You are all over the place. If you could upload the SVG of Image:West Africa regions map.png, I will give it a going over with the current style brush :) One of your earliest maps I surmise. Deleted hotel listing from the Cavtat & Mljet pages
[edit]Hi Peterfitzgerald, Could you tell me what's the reason for deleting my text from the pages for Cavtat & Mljet? There was no explanation, so I don't know where I'm going wrong.
Peter: anon user 89.253.128.102 (and some other IP's followed after)caused trouble and finally blacklisting of a hotel chain User talk:Jc8136#Spamming_German_articles_with_multiple_hotel_listings_and_always_in_the_splurge_section. which finally blacklisted due to your non-policy complaint behaviour. It's a SEO company (WT-en) jan 06:46, 24 March 2010 (EDT)
OK, but we have posted other articles in WikiTravel after this case. Now the rules are clear for us. So how could we be removed from this black list? I think we're following the WikiTravel guidelines for the last articles in Cavtat & Mljet pages.
- I think it would be a trust building base if you would get yourself a login here like other SEO (e.g. User:(WT-en) Themegroup) and confirm that you follow the policies (xl, dt, apt, style, tone etc.). Then it is easier to communicate with you if other users question your edits. I guess you have to wait a couple of hours concerning Peter's revert as he lives at the US East coast and is still sleeping (currently it's about 6:30 AM in Chicago). Help regarding embedding an image
[edit]Hi! I saw your name in the contributors of Langkawi page here. I want to embed some of the pictures I took in Langkawi last month. As a trial, I have uploaded one image on Wikivoyage Shared (http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Image:DSCF0214.JPG). Now I want to embed it to the article on Langkawi in the main Wikivoyage site. Can you send me the instructions for the same? Once I know the system, I can upload more pictures too. Thanks, Umang
- Peter is away, so I will answer for him. The syntax for adding an image to an article is straightforward: [[Image:example.jpg]]. You will need to refine the layout after that though, using alignment and size instructions. Typical complete image syntax would look like something like this: [[Image:example.jpg|thumb|right|300px|Picture of an example]]. That would produce a right-aligned thumbnail, 300 pixels wide with the caption "Picture of an example".
- One request: when writing on a talk page, please sign your name by hitting the 2nd button from the right on the tool bar at the top of the edit screen. Then we always know who is talking to who. Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:16, 31 March 2010 (EDT)

SpringHill Suites spam
[edit]Good Evening,
I had edits/additions reverted and for future use would like to understand how to correct this. I just started using Wikivoyage and I am trying to add multiple hotel listings. Initially I did make some errors that were pointed out to me...used similar descriptions and did not include price. I then read the instructions I was directed to and resubmitted the listings. However, as they are still be removed I'm obviously continuing to do something incorrectly.
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Brooklyn
[edit]I've been working on Brooklyn a bit, including adding district descriptions on the main page. Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about either Williamsburg or Flatbush-Bed-Stuy, but if I remember correctly you said you did. Would you mind writing descriptions for these two, so the thing will be complete?
Thanks (WT-en) Rastapopulous 15:12, 5 April 2010 (EDT)
- Absolutely. I unfortunately got distracted after we finally got the districts sorted out, but I'd love to finally get around to filling out some of those off-the-beaten-path district articles—the research should give me a bunch of cool new places to check out next time I'm in the area! I've been very busy lately offline, though, so it may still be a little while. --Peter Talk 20:54, 5 April 2010 (EDT)
- Also, do you think you can check on my Brighton Beach description? I feel it's a bit long and I remember you know that area well, too.

Maps
[edit]Did you use OSM to make the neighborhood map of Brooklyn? Or something else? (on a side note, getting an appropriate-sized map of Queens in OSM is very difficult) (WT-en) Rastapopulous 13:14, 8 April 2010 (EDT)
- Yep, OSM for Brooklyn. And don't start working on a Queens map! I've actually finished one except for the neighborhood/district boundaries, which I want to be accurate to the street level. I'll try to hammer it out tonight, since I'll be really busy for the weekend.
- Incidentally, I manually selected the area on the OSM export for Queens and exported the Mapnik SVG at 200,000, if that helps give you a good idea of what sort of size and zoom is possible to work with. The first step after opening it up in Inkscape is to Ctrl-F find all of the smallest streets (copy-paste the style info from the Ctrl-Shift-X XML editor), Ctrl-K to combine them into one massive path (that can take a long time—I usually let the computer run for an hour or two while I do something else), then move it to a separate layer and turn that layer off. It's the small streets that cause the SVG file to be so big, so turning off the small streets layer will open up your computer's visual memory so you can actually edit the file. You can also Ctrl-L them after combining to simplify them, which will bring the filesize way down, but lose a bit of accuracy. Be sure to vacuum defs from the file menu after simplifying.
- For more instructions on this type of import, look at Project:How to create a map#SVG imports from OSM (and Project:How to draw a map for more general info on Wikivoyage-style maps). Maybe you might try your hand at creating a Bronx or Staten Island map using this method? --Peter Talk 19:55, 8 April 2010 (EDT)

First, your Australia map made producing the WA region map relatively straightforward and this was a really enjoyable map to put together. Minot
[edit]Saw ur article on Minot... (I added a bar.) I wasn't sure how to add more tho, so maybe you'd like to? The Sleep In hotel is in Dakota Square, hosts a pretty good waterpark. Expensive, over $100/night. There's also a bar called Ebeneezer's, an Irish pub, downtown. VERY good food, for over 21. Lake Metigoshe could be listed, too, as many people have cabins there. For trivia's sake there is a antique/junk/everything store downtown. It's just awesome!!! I will find address/name/number if you'd like. I'm not from Minot, but Bowbells... 72 mi north. I really liked your info... and I'm glad you DID note how traffic doesn't yeild to pedestrians... Minot, ND is the worst place in the world to drive, other than Salt Lake City. And I lived in Los Angeles!!! (lol)...... again, thanks for the wonderful info. We small towns need all the help we can get!

Two requests
[edit]Peter I would be very grateful if you could look over the following:
- The discussion on regions at Talk:Guatemala. Hatching this map, making sense of the tangled maze of articles, and implementing the region scheme has been tricky to say the least. There are two outstanding naming questions which you might have a view about, and I would also greatly appreciate another set of experienced eyes running over the region scheme and map.
- Bougainville. This is a slightly curly one. In 2007 I was privileged enough to be on a diving liveaboard which explored largely unknown reefs off western Bougainville, and I also spent two days in a converted troop carrier moving around the east coast of the island. It is probably the most OtbP place I have made it to, (although Halmahera would come close!). The point is, I am writing that region article in a non-standard way and really do not want to implement "city" articles. These would be totally and utterly pointless. Bougainville as a region will just about sustain one article, with a sub-article (maybe) for Buka Island. What would your view be if I added all information into the region article, including attractions, sleep options (very few), Get in information etc? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:46, 1 May 2010 (EDT)
- Thanks for the prompt reply Peter and I will push on with that. It is a top level region of a large country, hence the region template. Are there cases where we have used a small city template for a top level region?--(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:34, 1 May 2010 (EDT)
- Thanks for that - it was a lot of work hacking through the maze and ensuring the regions made sense! There are two region renaming suggestions: Pacific Highlands -> Pacific Guatemala (as the region is both highlands and a long stretch of coast) and Carribean Coast -> Izabal (being the only department of that region). --(WT-en) Burmesedays 13:27, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
- On Bougainville, I have gone as far as I can and I think it hangs together OK. I would love to draw a map but there are no sources, except... this. What is your take on using that as a trace source? Believe it or not, that website is the official tourism site of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. There is no copyright statement anywhere. Do you think I could use that map as a source in all good conscience? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:27, 7 May 2010 (EDT)
- LT Powers has very helpfully pointed me to a UN Map, which looking at it, I suspect is the source for the map I questioned. It will be a perfect source for WT travel map, so please ignore the question above.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 18:57, 7 May 2010 (EDT)
This must be a first
[edit]I know you were amused by the prospect of placing a street name on a country map when you did Qatar. Well, this is even more unlikely — I have just finished the Nauru map, and used two hotel icons :). I thought that might amuse you.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:11, 5 May 2010 (EDT)
- Ha—just two? I take that to mean the beaches aren't nice. All I know of the place is that it's a total ecological disaster, with the entirety of the island pretty much dug up for phosphate. --Peter Talk 20:36, 5 May 2010 (EDT)
- Indeed. Phosphate and the sleazy deal with John Howard - "we will give you more aid if you house an Australian refugee processing camp....". Only two hotels and 90% unemployment says it all really. A sad disaster of a nation. Nice map though :) :) --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:28, 6 May 2010 (EDT)

I just saw the message you left to me one month ago! I've been traveling around the world for 1 year 1/2 now and I don't have time to update Wikivoyage regularly. We already had contact for French translation about new CC license.
I definitely want to improve Wikivoyage when I'm back especially the poor French version. I'll have more questions later, to create and translate maps particularly. I saw that you added a map for Paraguay. Good work! I've traveled in those small countries along with Uruguay, Suriname, Guyana, El Salvador... which don't have much content and I will update them.

Japanese city organization
[edit]Hello Peter (if I may)
Here is a comment I just posted and wanted to forward to your attention:
The launch of this site has been terrific and I applaud the pioneers and creators so far... And I think we are ready for the next "phase" in this Japan Wiki Travel Project... making entries according to train stations for Japan's major cities.
I can see that only a few major hubs have been done in phase one, however it seems we are at a turning point as we have started to lump together too much info into Wards. Furthermore, such categorization is not true to the way the major Japanese cities are arranged and imagined. I can see this might fit the original format given by Wikivoyage worldwide, but is that the proper way to organize Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya or Osaka?
Wouldn't we suggest people check out "Ryokoku" or "Komazawa-koen (Park)" or "Takadanobaba" rather than each Ward name? Further, wouldn't people using a full info base expect not only genuine, but also more specific categories? Conversely, wouldn't our jobs be nearly over unless we make that move? Is there another site that has Wiki-type info on each of the stations on the Yamanote line, for example? (Well, Wikipedia is going there... So if Wiki travel doesn't make the next move, then who?) Admittedly, there are simple bedroom towns around staions out on many lines, so for Tokyo, for example, perhaps we can start with all stations on the Yamanote line. Given the size, identity and importance of stations, given the nature of user-generated sites, I suggest we make this move as "Phase Two" for the Japan Wikivoyage. Thanks. SS
- Japan is a bit out of my realm of expertise, although I have had some fun times there. Looks like this is being discussed at Talk:Japan#Proper Organization & Next Phase. --Peter Talk 18:16, 25 May 2010 (EDT)

User-creation spamination
[edit]Hey Peter. I don't know if you've noticed, but over on es: we have been experiencing a sort of user-creation spam from mostly Peruvian-based tour operators where they create a username plus number, like IncaTrail996, Travelperu5, Machupicchu986 etc, and post an ad for their business, usually in English, on the user talk page (have a look at the user creation log and the deletion log). For what must be a couple of months at least, I have been deleting the talk page of these, with nary a comment from them, yet every day they come back and make a new one with a different number attached. I'm pretty sure it's not all from the same source since they seem to be from what would be competing tour operators, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm getting a little tired of deleting their crap every day, and I'm not really sure what to do about it. If I could confirm that they are coming from certain static IP addresses, I could block them, but since they create a user ID first, I can't see what IP addresses they are using. Isn't there a way to see what addresses new user creations come from? And aside from that, do you have any suggestion on how to stop this silly crap? Thanks... Thanks for catching that this page was an SEO ad - I looked over the first few paragraphs and marked it patrolled without getting down to the last several. You're either the master of browser tab usage, you've built the world's best patrolling scripts, or you have some other secret recipe for catching these things that I'd love to know about. In any case, thanks. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:11, 11 July 2010 (EDT)
DC Neighborhoods Map
[edit]Any chance you would be willing to send an svg file of your lovely DC neighborhoods map? (DC_neighborhoods_map.png... this one --> )
I'm new to DC and would like to use it for an art project (not for any monetary gain or the like, just to decorate my walls and learn the city).
—The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Jsusanc (talk • contribs)
- Certainly, but it will take me a bit of time to extract it from my "workshop SVG", which includes tons of layers and information unrelated to the basic neighborhoods map—I'll leave you a message on your talk page when I get around to it. I figure it would be worth doing, though, since this is a popular map. In the meantime, if you are just looking for a high res PNG version for printing, try this .
Azerbaijan edit conflict
[edit]I rolled back three edits made by an anonymous user yesterday on the Azerbaijan article (history) in an attempt to keep the working neutral regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This user redid those edits. The paragraphs have been moved and broken up, but the only significant change is the wording of NKR-related sentences (which I recently wrote). It started off as this little blurb:
- The region of Nagorno-Karabakh was the subject of a war with Armenia that has left it a de facto independent republic. "Occupied" by the Armenian army, this conflict has not officially ended with minor skirmishes frequent, and is a major source of contention among Azerbaijanis.
Occupied is in quotation marks to reflect the attitude you find throughout Az. regarding the situation. I thought that was a good description of the situation and fair, but this anonymous user has changed it to:
- The Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, which is part of Azerbaijan, was the subject of a war with Armenia that has left it a de facto independent republic, which is not internationally recognized, ironically including Armenia which "supports" it. Azerbaijan has lost 13% of its territory and must support some 800,000 refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. Occupied by the local Armenian troops to this day, this conflict has not officially ended with minor skirmishes frequent, and is a major source of contention among Azerbaijanis. "
The user asserts in the edit summary that: "Occupied is a fact based not on politics but on the actual situation which does affect potential travellers to that area." It would be nice if, as an admin and third-party, you could please explain this to the user as I'm not sure how to best explain this to him/her and would like to avoid an edit war. Thanks. [edit]I started with what I know well, and added or enhanced the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site article. I think I'm pretty much finished with it, until changes or suggestions pop up. I know that it lacks a map, but would appreciate any other comments on format, phrasing, missing info, conflicts with policy, etc., so I can improve this article and also ones in the future. Meanwhile, I'll keep working on the world heritage site list.
I have also added do or get out sections to some of the nearby towns, especially the ones which I included in the Cahokia article (and added pages when missing). Just today, I ran into the discussion on email addresses so removed them from the DO and SEE listings I had created when I also had web addresses. But I know that I have a ways to go to get a good understanding of what belongs on the site.
As a librarian, I also went looking for detailed information about how to search the site: things like using Boolean, fuzzy, wildcard. Info about potential delays in indexing. And I could not find a page. Just "finding travel information" in Project:Welcome, newcomers. I used the Help:Searching page on wikipedia, and a good bit of that works, though not all is implemented here. And of course examples are not from wikivoyage. Wikipedia also dwells a good bit on categories, which are not used in the same way here. Is there such a help page and I'm just missing it? Is this something that would be desirable for me to start writing? If I did, I'd put something together on a subpage under my user talk page, and seek comments on whether it was something sufficient to move out somewhere. And of course comments on whether what I said was accurate.
Thanks. (WT-en) Bill in STL 00:36, 26 July 2010 (EDT)

Phrasebooks
[edit]I have made some substantial changes to the List of phrasebooks page, which show my ideas of what it might look like. I would appeciate your taking a look. I'm still trying to learn my way around the site, so if I did this too fast or with insufficient discussion, please revert as appropriate. Thanks. (WT-en) Bill in STL 19:26, 11 August 2010 (EDT)
- I looked through the list of books by status, and your color coding was almost completely correct. You do good work! I found a couple of oddities, and updated them based on the status template they are assigned. The Dogon phrasebook which you created in April is the only phrasebook which I could find which is not listed anyplace on the page. But then again, it has no translated words to English, just the box asking for help. Do you think it should be listed someplace here? Russian is listed as Guide; looks good to me as a star, but then I only speak English so I really can't assess.
- Should there be a "noinclude" section in the phrasebook page with instructions for adding new phrasebooks to the table or updating color when status changes? I know that wikivoyage normally stays clear of fancy formatting, so I don't know what the normal custom is when we go past that. Do you think that if someone knew enough to add their new phrasebook to the list page then they would understand the table structure without help, or else would be hopeless even with help? Most folks adding a new page wouldn't think of going here, and I suspect that anyone looking for stray phrasebooks or patrolling new pages and looking to see if it had been added here would have no problems at all.
- Not happy with the Creole phrasebook page, since I doubt that the creole of Guinea-Bissau is "much more famous" than all the other creoles. In the states, I think people think more of Gullah or Louisiana French when they say creole, and elsewhere probably other creoles. I made Creole into a disambiguation page, and we probably want to rename/move the Guinea-Bissau page and redirect "Creole phrasebook" to the disamb page. I'm thinking that we don't need to list the generic "creole" on the phrasebook page. If you got here, you probably know which creole you're looking for. Thanks.
- Not sure where we are with Eu.Portuguese phrasebook. At the moment it is a blank page, so I added the only portuguese page to South America, also in Europe and world list. If they decide about separate pages, then this can be updated then. (WT-en) Bill in STL 21:59, 17 August 2010 (EDT)
Interview Request for U.S. News
[edit]Hi Peter,
I'm an editor with U.S. News & World Report. I'm writing a feature on Once in a Lifetime getaways for an upcoming issue of the magazine. We did a survey and found Bora Bora is the #1 spot most people would like to go for Relaxation & Spa. I noticed that you'd contributed to that page (which is very well done, by the way).
I'm looking for anecdotes from people who've traveled there, lived there, or currently live there to spice up the article. Would you be available to speak to me this week? I'm in D.C. as well, but I could also send you some e-mail or User talk questions if that's preferable.
You will be attributed.
Thanks so much,

Didn't visit any gulags - not that interested in human suffering. There are some reasonably well preserved ones not from from Nizhneangarsk, Novaya Chara, and apparently Ust-Nera. Most of the Kolyma Gulag has long since been eaten by taiga. One exception is the area around Tynda, which has several functional North Korean gulags...
Regarding maps, I used ones I found on google image search. Google earth also has a line picked out for most of the road. I found a soviet map in magadan (and bought it!), but I doubt it's useful for this article. Most people who drive the road don't have maps - there's only about 3 junctions on the whole thing, so it's not too hard to navigate.
I do need help with wiki formatting, and all the other stuff. I did a bit of wiki-izing about 4 years ago, but forgot most of the information since. Listings templates
[edit]Hey Peter, how's it going? Do you know how I can go about getting templates like
* <see name="" alt="" address="" directions="" phone="" email="" fax="" url="" hours="" price=""></see>
working on other language versions? I can see that the English one works there, so I suppose it must be something universal, but we need translated versions running, and it would be nice to get the clickable ones under the edit window as well. I figure if this has already been addressed, you probably know where to point me, so that's why I'm asking you. I'll be glad to translate them and do it myself if it is somewhere I can access... Thanks. (WT-en) Texugo 10:12, 6 September 2010 (EDT)
- Thank you. I'm looking at the Portuguese version now. I copied the Edit tools over now, and I found the tags you translated on ru: -- It appears that that is where you a) found out you can't translate the raw markup tags (I tried it too) and b) succeeded in translating the form editor labels (without IB's help). So now the form editor appears in Portuguese fine, but you can only get to it by clicking the small edit button at the end of a listing already in template format-- there is no section button for "add a listing". So two more questions, if you don't mind: 1) How do I enable the "Add a listing" feature, and 2) Is the fact that the raw tags cannot be translated due to laziness or refusal on IB's part, or have we even tried talking to them about it? Hi Peter. How do you handle something like the latest edit to Venice? 23.57 10 Sept. Delete reference to the shop and insert new section on credit card scams? I am off to Entebbe for a few days soon so I'd be grateful if you could take action as it cannot be left as is. Thanks (WT-en) Shep 02:42, 11 September 2010 (EDT)
- It looks like Globe-Trotter took care of cleaning up that edit. With notes like these, it's generally a toss up between removing the listing outright, per Project:Avoid negative reviews, or leaving in a mild warning for truly notable situations. Whichever seems like the more useful choice for the traveler! --Peter Talk 23:36, 12 September 2010 (EDT)

Consulates
[edit]I thought I would attempt to garner your opinion on whether you think adding consulates to city pages is a worthwhile cause or not. I have been working on adding them to various cities (U.S.) the past week. New York City and L.A. had zero listed on their article page, which I found pretty jaw-dropping (they now have a dozen or so).(WT-en) Zepppep 14:34, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
- Not Peter, but I continue to be of the opinion that it's largely unnecessary. (We've discussed it on-site somewhere in the past.) In general, the consulates of at most one (or maybe two) countries are at all useful to any single reader of our articles. That makes printing the whole list a bit of a waste of space. A far better organization for consulate and embassy information is to organize it by country, rather than by city. (Embassies, I note, are a bit of a different story, as they can sometimes be an attraction in and of themselves.) That's not to denigrate the hard work you've put in, but I just don't see the usefulness. (WT-en) LtPowers 18:09, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
- I should point out here that I probably do not represent the consensus opinion here. (WT-en) LtPowers 21:00, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
- Point well taken. I guess "usefulness" was the wrong word to use, as I agree most ppl would already have such information jotted down before venturing off considering the importance consulates play (agree on embassies...because they're different from consulates, I think they should be listed on the country page as well, and not the capital/city page...this would do away with some of the issues that are brought up when WTers put an embassy/consulate on a city page of a small country or island, where the country is so small/concentrated that it would be nearly impossible NOT to go to the capital). Re: the space issue, doing a 50% Wikimarkup split is possible, like the Chicago article exemplifies. Alas, Chicago also happens to be a star article so I guess I'm just trying to copy from some of the better articles. (WT-en) Zepppep 14:29, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
- It's true your opinion isn't the consensus (and I appreciate your candor, not bashing here) as PerryPlanet posted a big "thank you" on my talk page...it's not so much work to simply list consulates, but what takes up quite a bit of my time is inserting all the contact info., although it can be oh-so-time-saving for WTers. Sigh.(WT-en) Zepppep 14:42, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
- Well, I guess my main concern is someone printing out our articles... a city with a lot of consulates could produce multiple pages of consulate listings; if paper is at a premium, that'll be a waste for most people. But really, this should probably be discussed someplace more central. (WT-en) LtPowers 20:25, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
- I'm all for it, a discussion in a central location. Chicago has 69 consulates listed and with the 50% split takes up about as much space as the religious services section, so I guess I'm thinking it's pretty manageable for those who wish to print out their guide. (WT-en) Zepppep 13:02, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
- I should also add I have probably only added 1 or 2 consulates to the Chicago article, so don't want to make it look like I'm taking credit. Other user(s) have added the vast majority of those listings and as the article has star status, I used that article page as my inspiration for wanting to post the same type of info to other cities. (WT-en) Zepppep 13:07, 17 September 2010 (EDT)

Map svg files
[edit]Hi Peter. If you can, please take a look at your shared talk page-- I am having some issues with translating maps because the svg files have been replaced with Russian or Hindi or whatever, scripts I can't read. So.. I want to know a) if you can put back the English svgs for a few maps, and b) if you don't think it would be better to have separate svg files for the different versions to avoid this kind of problem. Buy Section
[edit]Some recent additions to the "Buy" section of Franklin (Venango County) make me wonder if they belong. My concern is that some of them are not tourist-oriented (ex: Celebration Station, Sportsworld, etc.). I am just not sure if they belong in Wikivoyage and would like another opinion. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 14:54, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
- Celebration Station, I think should definitely go. Sportsworld seems a bit less clear—is it something exceptional, like a really huge store that people from out of town would have a reason to visit? Or is it some undistinguished chain(ish) sports store that you'd find basically anywhere in the U.S.? Nice to see that section getting fleshed out a bit, but careful pruning is always a fine task. --Peter Talk 14:58, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
Hi Peter. See the latest addition about a Blog here, which I have edited. Seems fairly useful but I'm not sure about the policy that would apply to this. Please advise. Thanks (WT-en) Shep 01:50, 26 September 2010 (EDT)
- It looks like Vidimian beat me to it, but I'd agree that the blog would have to be removed, since Project:External links is pretty clearly against blog additions. I'd actually be tempted to remove the learn and walks listings, as there really shouldn't be any listings in a region article—only in "bottom-level" articles for cities, towns, and other destinations. --Peter Talk 17:26, 26 September 2010 (EDT)

Updated map of South America
[edit]Hi Peter,
I started a translation of English maps into French. My very first attempt was the update of the Map of South America: updated SVG with new layers for French translation , some minor corrections in the English .png and a new French .png .
Could you please check that I did everything OK? in particular regarding acknowledgements and license issue (I selected CC-by-sa 3.0 but it was already set to CC-by-sa 1.0 and above in existing maps).
Do you have any standard policy regarding map version names e.g. Map_of_South_America_fr.png instead of Map_of_South_America(fr).png?
Also, do you know how I could use the Regionlist template in wikivoyage/fr? It doesn't seem recognized in this version.
Thanks a lot for your help! (WT-en) Joelf 01:31, 16 October 2010 (EDT)
Chicago "Sides" Map

I hope you are the one who created the Chicago Sides map grouping by color the community areas into sides. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chicago_community_areas_map.svg) I am working on my dissertation and I'm trying to figure out the origin of the "sides". How did you come up with those names and groupings? What is the earliest day they were used and are they officially recognized anywhere?
