Rationale

[edit]

Brazil is an enormous country, bigger than the continental US and taking up almost exactly half of South America, with a wide range of climates, cultures, cities, nature, attractions, and activities. The country received a record 5.5 million international tourists in 2011 and hosted the World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics of 2016.

Our current coverage of Brazil needs a great deal of attention; currently there are no state/region articles above outline status, only 5 guide-status articles, and not a single star. This Expedition exists to clarify exactly what needs to be done in pursuit of our goals for articles related to Brazil, identify avenues for potential collaboration, and generate enthusiasm towards achieving our goals.

Goals

[edit]

The current long-term goals of this expedition are:

  • to prepare our coverage of major tourist areas in Brazil, bringing them up to guide status
  • to bring all state articles up to usable status and improve their subregional organizations
  • get our first Brazilian star article, and our second, third, fourth...

Current priorities

[edit]

To get started we should:

  • bring the 9 usable World Cup/Olympics host cities up to guide status, and recheck the status of the 3 already given guide status
  • create a World Cup 2014 article similar to the World Cup 2010 article, to help those planning their trip to get organized
  • bring the most important secondary destinations (those in bold in the Destinations section) to at least usable status

References

[edit]

These references may help you in researching new content for our Brazil articles.

  • Wikivoyage Portuguese - The most obvious reference, pt: has many articles which are better developed than what we have. These are marked in the trackers below with the symbol. Even if you don't know Portuguese, you can probably understand at least the names and contact details of attraction, activity, restaurant, and hotel listings that have been recommended there, which is in many cases more than we have here, and which can serve as starting points for further research.
  • EMBRATUR - Ministry of Tourism site in English and Portuguese .
  • Turismo Brasil - Another government tourism site, this one only in Portuguese.
  • KeKanto , Apontador and GuiaMais - Review sites for hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. (all in Portuguese)

This is the article status tracker for important tourist destinations of Brazil. These lists by no means represent all the articles we currently have or should have in the future, but serve as a tracking mechanism for the most important regional hubs of the country and the popular tourist destinations associated with them.

If you have upgraded an article's status and need to change the tracker color, edit this section, find the line which contains the destination name, and change the color to: "Red" for no article, "OrangeRed" for a stub, "Orange" for an outline, "Yellow" for a usable article, "PaleGreen" for a guide and, hopefully one of these days, "LimeGreen" for a star.

Cities and parks

[edit]

The twelve hub destinations which will host the 2014 World Cup and/or 2016 Summer Olympics represent most of the major destinations of the country. They are each listed together with the secondary destinations most likely to be visited in conjunction with a trip there. Secondary destinations in bold are considered to be of special importance. Below the twelve destinations, there is a list of a other important destinations of interest which are a bit further from the 12 hub destinations, but which any good Brazil guide should have a good article for. Here, again, those in bold are considered to be of special importance.
