2011

December 2011

Place: Bath
Blurb: {{{blurb}}} (should not exceed ~145 characters)
Article status: guide (must be guide or above).
Time to feature: anytime
Nominated by: --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:58, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
Comment: The place speaks for itself and the article is a good guide.

Nomination
  • Support from me at least. No comments on this one? We are terribly short of non-Asian candidates.--(WT-en) burmesedays 00:34, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Some issues still need to get fixed, like Royal Crescent Hotel is listed double and maybe the Drink section could use some rewriting. But that can all be done. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 01:22, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. There is some minor formatting that could use cleanup, but overall a solid article. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 01:38, 28 September 2011 (EDT)

Place: Bandarban
Blurb: {{{blurb}}} (should not exceed ~145 characters)
Article status: Guide (must be guide or above).
Time to feature: best December to June
Nominated by: --(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:39, 1 August 2011 (EDT)
Comment: This one really surprised me. Lovely article about a lovely destination. Needs a bit of polishing up but not much. Would make a great OtBP feature.

Nomination
  • Don't support The lack of comment might indicate the level of interest on this one. Looks like an interesting destination but I cant say the same about the article. Understand is great, See is not particularly useful, Eat and Drink are barely worth reading and at least one of those images should be vfd'ed. Not really what we should be featuring. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 04:40, 7 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Support A really interesting and very OtBP destination in a section of the world that hasn't seen any features in quite a while, if I'm not mistaken. The biggest population center is just 32,000 people (and this is in Bangladesh), so we can't really expect long, involved eat or drink sections. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:46, 10 September 2011 (EDT)

November 2011

Place: Kuching
Blurb: {{{blurb}}} (should not exceed ~145 characters)
Article status: guide (must be guide or above).
Time to feature: anytime
Nominated by: --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 02:52, 30 October 2009 (EDT)
Comment: Impressively comprehensive guide, with some nice pictures to boot.

Nomination
A few things: The "Do" and "Drink" sections need more descriptions. Are all of the food specialties specific to Kuching or could some be moved into the regional article? Also, many of the listings are not properly formatted. (To those who keep saying formatting is not required, I'd like to point out that it is listed as a requirement through the statement, "listings/headers/etc. that match our manual of style." Formatting is part of the manual of style, and "listings" are even mentioned directly. Please continue the discussion on the talk page if you have any thoughts on this.) (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 16:32, 30 October 2009 (EDT)
Virtually all of those food items should be moved over to Sarawak, which already lists most of them with the same pictures to boot... (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:20, 1 November 2009 (EST)
Yeah, was thinking that might come up, what if we temporarily delete (move to the talk page) those empty listings while it's featured? there are plenty of others to go on. Aaaand, If you're going to oppose it on the merrit of the lack of "new style" format, I'll just go right ahead and slush this one again, cause I sure as hell ain't doing all that work, but I still think it's a pitty to disqualify good good guides on that basis. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 17:02, 30 October 2009 (EDT)
Unless the "Do" and "Drink" sections are deemed to be lacking too much, I don't think it needs to be slushed for the formatting. If it were next month's feature, it would be more urgent, but since this is unscheduled, there could very well be 6 months before it is featured. That would be enough time for someone (not necessarily you) to put the listings in proper format. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:49, 31 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. It would be very cool to have a Brunei feature, and this one is, I think, certainly up to guide status and thus qualifies for a feature. I don't think deleting the very few unfinished listings would be worthwhilethat wouldn't IMO be an improvement, and if anything we should hope that they will encourage a new user to fill them out! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 04:25, 1 November 2009 (EST)
  • Support, slightly grudgingly. It is good when DoTM are actually nice places and I dont't like Kuching much. I know likes and dislikes are supposed to be irrelevant, however... :) More objectively, it is a good article for sure and certainly worthy of a DoTM. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:32, 1 November 2009 (EST)
  • Support. That's a really impressive article. My only very minor issue is why some of the destinations in the driving distance table are bolded and others are not. Perhaps one of you would like to clarify or edit that. But it's a really good article. (WT-en) Ikan Kekek 02:39, 8 August 2011 (EDT)
  • Needs work, Support. While there is some good prose, a lot of work is still needed. A amount of listings in the See, Do, Eat, Drink and Sleep sections need to be listingified. Even if we don't listingify, the Drink section still needs clean-up, and there are a lot of empty listings. The Get out section has a big style tag on it and has way too much content. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 22:23, 3 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Comment. Do we say anywhere that listings must be listingfied in a feature article? I really hope not, as that will severely limit our choices. Drink section can be fixed in an instant by deleting the empty bullets. I will deal with Get out right now. Given our extreme lack of options, I don't see any need to hold this one up.--(WT-en) burmesedays 23:01, 3 September 2011 (EDT)
Done. --(WT-en) burmesedays 23:31, 3 September 2011 (EDT)
  • That's definitely an improvement. I've changed to support. I still think the Drink section isn't a good read, but maybe I'm a bit too nickpicky here :-) --(WT-en) globe-trotter 23:51, 3 September 2011 (EDT)

Place: Pyin U Lwin
Blurb: {{{blurb}}} (should not exceed ~145 characters)
Article status: Guide (must be guide or above).
Time to feature: anytime
Nominated by: --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:50, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
Comment: Hill station in Burma.

Nomination
  • Support. Article looks good, with nice photos. (WT-en) Ikan Kekek 16:38, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Not Sure It'd be nice to have some complete listings and more information about the Shiva and Chinese temples would be nice. On top of those, though, I don't see a picture here that is of a high enough quality to feature. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 04:25, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Looking again, I am a bit concerned that the substance of the article has not been updated for a few years now. From my own experience, I can say that the article is a good accurate reflection of the situation from that period... but the lack of updates bother me for a featured article. There are some nice pics on Flickr which are suitably licensed - so we can deal with that objection.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:33, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Interesting destination and the article looks good. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:50, 20 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support - Eat and Sleep info on any destination like this goes out of date quickly. The See and Do listings should all still be the same. Maybe exposure will encourage others to put in more current info. I agree, the images aren't spectacular but if beter ones can be sourced - no problem there. The article is still worth featuring - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 03:17, 7 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Comment. Have added a couple of nice images. The horse carriage in front of the whacky mock Tudor house perfectly captures the essence of the place.--(WT-en) burmesedays 01:04, 9 September 2011 (EDT)

October 2011

Comment: We aren't exactly running short on Japan DOTMs, but here's one more for sometime in 2010. Best in spring or fall.

Nomination
Support. Good descriptions in this one. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 11:21, 18 July 2009 (EDT)
It's a very pretty article, but there are few addresses listedis this a Japan-specific thing? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:22, 18 July 2009 (EDT)
It wouldn't hurt to add them, but in general directions are much more useful for finding places in Japan. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:27, 20 July 2009 (EDT)
Most other Japan pages have addresses. The listings on the Kanazawa page only mimic Wikivoyage's formatting, but they do not actual use it. I suspect that's why the addresses are left out. There is a lot of time, though, to format the page properly before this is featured. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 17:27, 21 July 2009 (EDT)
  • Support Wish I had read this when I was there, all I remember seeing was the "clock fountain" and the park. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 16:50, 4 December 2009 (EST)
  • Support Great article. --(WT-en) Tiagox2 09:32, 16 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support Scrolling through the past DOTM and OTBT locations, I can see what you mean about the not running short of Japan. Having said that, this Spring is chokkas already, so the earliest time this could go up is (late? not sure on the climate in that prefecture) Autumn, which would actually mark almost 2 years since the previous Japanese DOTM... but Wakkanai is scheduled as a OTBP.(WT-en) Snave 07:12, 6 March 2011 (EST)
  • Support. Looks good. It would be better if the listings were listingified, but it still looks neat nonetheless. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 22:29, 3 September 2011 (EDT)

Comment: It seems pretty complete.

Nomination
  • Support. Very complete. --(WT-en) Tiagox2 09:37, 16 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 12:53, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 00:20, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Info is complete (if a bit dense in sopts) Those left aligned images look messy to my eye. Otherwise, some nice writing and genuinely interesting (non Asian) destination. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 02:42, 5 September 2011 (EDT)

September 2011

Very nice guide to an ever popular destination.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:51, 8 July 2011 (EDT)

  • Support It looks pretty good, and I like the sunset picture. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 18:36, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Really great work from Whatsinaname. The only issue is the "cities" and "other communities" sections, which I think should be removed and the content incorporated in other sections (such as Understand). Best featured in the summer, not after September. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 09:07, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Yep, that is a bit non-standard. The article does though (correctly) use a region template, and cities is a valid sub-section of that. The alternative would be to put those 2 sections under an orientation sub-section of understand. That would be a bit strange though for an island which is not tiny. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:07, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support: Surprisingly full of detail on every aspect of destination. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:44, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. The article is up to date, detailed and contains a lot of information, especially (but not only) for the gay traveler. A map of Mykonos island and a map of Mykonos Town would have been nice , though it is doubtful if a map of the maze of tiny streets in Mykonos Town would be very useful. The listing of hotels and restaurants only consists of the better hotels and restaurants, from affordable to expensive, based on personal experiences and reviews at Tripadvisor. The article contains some nice pictures of which three could function as eye-cather for Destination of the Month. Best featured in August or September 2011, or otherwise June 2012. --(WT-en) Whatsinaname 19:52, 19 July 2011 (EDT)

A very small monastery town famous for its Buddhist art. The last Chinese OtBP was back in 2007 so maybe it's time for another. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 09:03, 7 July 2011 (EDT)

  • Support It reads well, except the last sentence in the Understand section: "Unfortunately the surrounding town has suffered modernities blandifying stroke leaving any of its former charm limited to a few crumbling corners." The part that says, "suffered modernities blandifying stroke" doesn't read well and I'm not sure it makes sense. What is 'stroke' here? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 04:19, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Very nice article indeed. I guess by stroke, the editor means "touch" or "effect". A rewording might be: "Unfortunately, the surrounding town has been blighted by modern, bland architecture, leaving its former charm limited to a few crumbling corners."--(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:28, 11 July 2011 (EDT)

August 2011

Here's what I think would make for a great OtBP district nomination. Our guide is essentially complete, with a map to boot, and most certainly equal or better to any other guide you'll find on the neighborhood. While there certainly is not a ton to do there, there is an enormous interest in the neighborhood among visitors following the much publicized destruction in Hurricane Katrina. The article is also a nice little plug to recommend eschewing the big Grayline tour buses and instead try to get to know the place outside of a giant vehicle. I'll make just a few tiny tweaks, but I think it's ready as is. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:26, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

  • Support. A complete guide with super map. A left field nomination and one which is very worthy.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:47, 3 June 2011 (EDT)
  • Support - Nice article. It'd be useful for the Do section to be broken up into headings so the info on DIY tours of affected sites and the big bus tours area separated. Maybe a mini itinerary of places that were/are damaged with info about what happened would help people do it on their own. (WT-en) Cardboardbird 21:37, 9 June 2011 (EDT)
That would be neat, but it's way beyond my ability to talk about specific properties—they do kind of tell you their stories by appearance alone. I pretty much just wandered around, then talked to people at the Chinese place and some random guy near the steamboat houses. Probably nothing you could write down would be more effective than just saying hello to people you meet. I think the bus tours were left out (both by myself and the other people who worked on it—mostly Infrogmation) because they wouldn't pass our tour policy. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:00, 9 June 2011 (EDT)
  • A question: The guide is excellent, but is it OK to have an "Eat and Drink" section, instead of two sections, "Eat" and "Drink"? I've been changing that in every other guide when I've seen it. But aside from that format question, I would Support the nomination. (WT-en) Ikan Kekek 02:41, 12 July 2011 (EDT)

We have featured a number of Indonesian articles over the past 2 years but none are currently nominated. This wonderful little island speaks for itself, and the article is a Star. Could be arguments for it being either DotM or OtBP. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:58, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

As a star article, I can't imagine a possible objection. I would call it OtBP, along with virtually anything in Indonesia other than Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:46, 3 June 2011 (EDT)
My only hesitation for OtBP is that this island is a part of Bali. However, it does not have any chain hotels or restaurants, and the visitor profile is decidedly independent. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:45, 3 June 2011 (EDT)
  • Support Indonesia may be our new Japan! lol Actually, for me, it's just nice to see new nominations and discussion on this page. Like Peter said, as a star article, there shouldn't be reason for objection. There are many great pictures, too. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 20:32, 3 June 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. I think it should be a DOTM, many people I know have been there. It is a popular trip from the main island of Bali. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 08:57, 5 June 2011 (EDT)
I see that Lembongan made it straight to the top of the list and is scheduled for next change. I have therefore updated the map ahead of the feature.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 06:28, 10 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Strong support. Now that (WT-en) Burmesedays has tackled some of the problems we were having with touts this article is back to amazing shape, and the sunfish picture makes for a great eye-catcher for the front page. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:35, 10 July 2011 (EDT)
I don't think the sunfish picture is a good choice, because this fish could be swimming (almost) anywhere. There are better pictures in the article that give a much better impression of the island. --(WT-en) Whatsinaname 18:06, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
I see your point. However, the picture used for DotM/OtBP is intended more than anything else to grab attention and generate a click. A wacky, bizarre sunfish will achieve that I think.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:35, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. From personal experience in 2010 I know that with a print of this article you can visit Nusa Lembongan without needing another travel guide. The article is up to date, detailed (especially the map) and contains a lot of information that you cannot find in any travel guide. I think it should be OTBP, being “a world away from the hassle and hectic pace of South Bali” (source: article itself) and relatively undiscovered. --(WT-en) Whatsinaname 16:59, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
Absolutely delighted to hear that this article was so useful in the real world to a Wikivoyager. I think it could sit happily as DotM or OtBP. It is part of Bali which screams DotM. However, it is one of the less visited Bali destinations which requires independent effort to reach, and is mercifully free of anything resembling cookie-cutter tourism. That decision needs to be made quickly as the article is scheduled as DotM in 11 days. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:44, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
Hmm, I've changed my opinion, I now think OTBP is better. Bali as a whole is of course hugely popular, but if we look at all the articles within Bali, it is one of the lesser visited places. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:39, 20 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Support NL is DoTM not OtBP. In the new catalogue for the winter season, even the biggest Swiss/German charter companies added a chapter for NL. The article is star so its obviously ready. (WT-en) jan 06:37, 30 July 2011 (EDT)

July 2011

Frankfurt (DotM)

Was slushed in 2009 for bad formatting. I started a full review and added also a small citycenter map. The Eat section is a bit weak but i work on this as i will do some business trips to Frankfurt, soon ;-)

Stefan: I'm not finished with the Museums and the Eat section in particular. I hope someone helps with a real good map in general and for the museums in particular! (WT-en) jan 14:52, 23 February 2011 (EST)
  • Weak Support The article is much better than before, but I would still like to see the "See" section organized by districts of some sort. The Museumsufer, for example, is so much more helpful for a traveler than "Skyline" or "Other museums", which give no indication of location in the city or in relation to other sites. From your trip, do you think you would be able to form proper districts? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 12:54, 7 March 2011 (EST)
CW: I don't think it would make any sense to districtify Frankfurt. The city is pretty compact and splitting it up would be difficult because that would result in a lot or redundancies. I will try to write in the opening paragraphs of the section some more orientation. Wikipedia has an own article for the museumsufer in English and it is very compact. I think you might assume to much distance then there is in reality. (WT-en) jan 13:40, 7 March 2011 (EST)
I don't mean to districtify it into separate articles, I mean give districts as subheadings of "See" (like the Kurashiki article), such as "Musumsufer". Right now, I have no idea whether or not I can walk from one specific site to another. It's much more helpful for a traveler to have sites organized according to location. That way, if I'm at or planning to visit the Goethe Haus und Museum, I can see what else is in the direct vicinity versus what I may have to use public transport to reach. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:42, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

Menzies (OtBP)

An old goldrush town in Western Australia. Lots of history and interesting sights in and around. Best time to visit is Aug-Oct, but anytime of the year is fine as long as you don't mind the heat. The article has a way to go before reaching guide status but I'm steadily working on it so should be ready by change over time. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 11:18, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

Content obviously needs added to the empty sections, but it's definitely getting there. When you feel that it is at guide status, give an update here and then hopefully I/we can support it! (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 19:06, 6 May 2011 (EDT)
Menzies is at guide status now. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 11:40, 21 May 2011 (EDT)
Support. Very interesting destination and a decent enough article. I suspect it would benefit from a stay safe section (most of Australia does), but that's a minor quibble.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:18, 22 May 2011 (EDT)
You make Australia sound dangerous ;) Well, it probably is. I considered including stay safe but there are no specific dangers in or around Menzies that are not covered in the region article or in the Western Australia/Australia articles. - (WT-en) Cardboardbird 10:53, 23 May 2011 (EDT)
  • Support It looks interesting, and I assume that there aren't other eat/sleep options. Oh, before I forget, it seems that both Sleep sites are listed as #2 on the map. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 20:35, 22 May 2011 (EDT)
Thanks, I missed that map problem. I fixed it to reflect the current listings. Yeah, that's all the places to eat/drink/sleep in town, and the Menzies Hotel covers 50% of the options alone. (WT-en) Cardboardbird 10:53, 23 May 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. Lake Ballard looks wild! Nice little article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:27, 2 June 2011 (EDT)
  • Support. What a weird little place - good catch for an OTBP. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:35, 10 July 2011 (EDT)

June

Great article. --81.193.162.197 12:02, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

Indeed, but I think LtPowers is still working on it. Maybe it would be better to wait for him to nominate it once he thinks it's ripe. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:48, 11 May 2010 (EDT)
Missed this somehow. I'm almost done with the district articles, and then I can get to work polishing up the main article. I know that featured articles don't have to be stars, but that's what I'm shooting for and I'd like to wait at least until I'm reasonably certain that the quality is up there before featuring it. (WT-en) LtPowers 22:51, 11 May 2010 (EDT)

Don't Support - I know the arguments about attraction v destination have been done to death in the past wrt Disneyworld, and the article does look very, very good even if a lot of the prose reads a bit "corporate" for my taste. However I don't think we should be featuring a commercial attraction as DotM. Fair enough it would be a tiny drop in a huge ocean as far as Disney's publicity is concerned but in my view it's still too much. (WT-en) Tarr3n 05:01, 12 May 2010 (EDT)

That is not a valid reason to oppose a nomination, per the rules: "All objections have to be based on the guidelines above: poor formatting, missing information, etc. Personal opinions, dislikes, etc do not count." Also: "Any destination, region, itinerary or event that passes the 'What is an article?' test is eligible for DotM/OtBP." In other words, if you feel that some topic should never be featured, then we should never have an article on that topic and you should begin a VfD discussion. (WT-en) LtPowers 08:55, 12 May 2010 (EDT)
Or, if we need to, start a discussion to formalise that there is already a ton of other factors about a destination in every nomination that goes beyond formatting and completeness. IMO Wikivoyage having a better guide than is available elsewhere is an excellent reason to nominate, and Wikivoyage only being one of many similar guides in mountains of information and publicity is an excellent reason to de-prioritize, and this doesn't come down to a personal opinion about the article. If we just concern ourselves with completeness and formatting, featured articles becomes just a subset of a starnom. Not commenting on this particular nom, of course, on which I have no opinion. --(WT-en) inas

I don't know how others continue to feel about this. I withdraw my concerns, as I feel I have the article up to DotM quality at this point. I would be happy to have Walt Disney World featured any time. (WT-en) LtPowers 19:50, 3 September 2010 (EDT)

You know, I don't see why WDW is a problem because it's a commercial operation, when we already have featured Jurassic Park on the front page. (WT-en) LtPowers 09:47, 18 October 2010 (EDT)

So, should we slush this, or what? (WT-en) LtPowers 09:26, 4 November 2010 (EDT)

  • Strong support. This is one of the strongest guides on our site, soon to be a star, and all around a no-brainer choice for a feature. Since the selection rules clearly state that personal dislike of a destination is not a valid reason to oppose, I don't see any possible objections in the way of featuring this. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:49, 4 November 2010 (EDT)
(WT-en) Tarr3n is still contributing but has not started any discussion (that I am aware of) about revising the feature guidelines, and I believe Inas has left the site out of frustration of how it is run. Although I don't personally feel like theme parks are the type of features that Dotm/OtBP is meant for(similar to O'Hare International Airport), without any discussion on talk pages, I also don't think it's fair to hold a nomination in limbo by use of non-response or guideline complaints with no move to change them, so until someone starts a formal discussion, the current non-support is invalid and unfair.
I do however, feel that this article should only be featured when nothing better is available for the specific month. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:38, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
  • Support loads of work put into this, it's a great guide, and we're running short on good nominees --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 19:34, 21 February 2011 (EST)
  • Support. Let's feature this for June, since as LtPowers points out on the talk page Lyon isn't supported. Disney is popular year round, and the article is in great shape. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:04, 31 May 2011 (EDT)

May

Khabarovsk (OtBP)

would be nice to see it featured before the information to gets too outdated, June is the best month, but May works too if need be. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 20:09, 16 December 2010 (EST)

Well, it's the same size as Atlanta and Portland, a major stop on the transsib, a capital city, and sees a million tourist arrivals per year; so as far as Russia goes, it's hardly OtBP - but this is ofcourse very subjective, and if others think it is, I'm happy to move it. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 06:10, 20 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support Veery complete article. --(WT-en) Tiagox2 14:33, 23 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support The article is nice and comprehensive. Similar to Sakhalin, it is a unique source of information on the region, especially in English. I don't know the city very well, but I see at least one point missing: an incredibly long railway tunnel built during WWII. It is actually my task to supply this excellent article with a bit of information from the Russian web. I will do my best-) Regarding the category: well, Khabarovsk is not a city everyone knows. The OtBP nomination is probably better. (WT-en) Atsirlin 04:48, 25 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support. I also thin this would be better as an OtBP. The only place well known at all (by travelers) in the Russian Far East, I think, would be Vladivostok. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:07, 29 December 2010 (EST)
  • Support I tend to think its OtBP but either way, it should be highlighted in our summer 2011. (WT-en) jan 03:48, 10 January 2011 (EST)

Elsinore (DotM)

So, since we're in short supply of candidates, I beefed up this lovely city from this to this, which turned out to be surprisingly difficult, never realized there was so many things to see and do, and so little interesting shops and restaurants. I'm also trying to add lat long markers for all the listings - does anyone have the map script working? cause I can't get OSM to export svg's.

Its wonderfully flexible - works both as DoTM and OtBP and anywhere between April and October. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 12:56, 20 February 2011 (EST)

  • Support Only Sweden in the map is written with three e, this mistake will likely go when Stefan updates the map. (WT-en) jan 13:47, 20 February 2011 (EST)
Yeah, been wondering if Niels made a joke here, or it's an actual mistake, but in any case I hope someone has the script working --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 04:32, 23 February 2011 (EST)
  • Support Yep, it's beefy. I'd say it's OtBP. I'd personally prefer if the map were either deleted or completely redone to match Wikivoyage format. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 12:50, 7 March 2011 (EST)

April

Jeju (OtBP)

OtBP Nom: Well off the beaten path for English-speaking tourists yet a MAJOR tourist destination for Asian travellers (the destination itself easily befitting a DotM on a non-English Wikivoyage). Recently got a pile of UNESCO natural accolades dumped on it. One of the few places in South Korea I'd truly recommend as internationally noteworthy; places like Andong, Gyeongju and Jeonju might be nice but they're a royal pain in the butt to reach for anyone short of a local English-teacher. Jeju however is linked internationally directly by air. Peak season is summer naturally, although that's also "crap, this hotel has no rooms" season, so perhaps an off-peak nomination for any of the other three seasons?(WT-en) Snave 03:37, 19 February 2011 (EST)

  • Are the two cities the only cities that will/should have articles? Also, does Jeju city only have three attractions? It would be good to make sure that both this article and the two city articles are reasonably thorough before featuring this. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 17:12, 22 February 2011 (EST)
    • Pretty much, for now. It's developing rapidly, but I don't think I could call anything outside those Jeju/Seogwipo/Jungmun a "city". Even Jungmun is pushing it given its a hotel agglomeration. Furthermore, only those two have dedicated local bus routes, which was the rationale behind the layout when I was cleaning the page formatting up. Put it this way: The comment someone put up about Seongsan Town's most notable feature apart from the obvious UNESCO-listed site being its disproportionate number of marts is pretty (amusingly) apt from what I saw. And that's one of the larger towns outside of Jeju and Seogwipo/Jungmun. The islands mostly little rural hamlets and homogenously placed weird theme tourist attractions. From what I saw, Jeju city itself was a pretty generic Korean city, a tightly packed agglomeration of housing, seafood restaurants, hotels, English schools and doughnut shops that you can walk to the edge of, turn around and quite literally see a line where the buildings stop: mostly an admin centre, only notable by its placement on the island. You are right though, the linked city pages are lacking, and if getting those up is essential for the main page then perhaps we could contact the Jeju Life magazine mentioned and ask them to put a call out. If there's a chance to get the island featured maybe they'll try and get a tonne of restaurant/bar listings up on the two city pages.(WT-en) Snave 04:04, 23 February 2011 (EST)

Bacolod DotM

Great guide article, although images aren't the best. --2.80.109.50 16:09, 12 October 2010 (EDT)

  • Support But there is work to do. There are way too many images and some of the sections need a little reorganizing, like the strange Sports section. I'll try to work with pictures now... (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:32, 17 December 2010 (EST)

March

Bristol DotM

A great guide article on a vibrant city which is really a hidden jewel in South West England. A very good place to visit in the summer when there are many exciting events and activities going on such as the Harbour Festival and Bristol Balloon Fiesta. (WT-en) Paulalatifa 10:20, 26 February 2010 (EST)

  • Support. Nice article and definitely a very interesting city. Article needs a bit of polishing up and good to see that the nominator is doing some of that already. I would not though agree that it is a "hidden jewel" in any way - Bristol is the 4th most visited city in England.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:11, 1 March 2010 (EST)
Thanks for the support. Doing my best on the editing, I am new to Wikivoyage but just moved from the Netherlands to Bristol and thought WikiTravel would be a nice project. To me it really was a hidden jewel, especially because next to famous London, Stonehenge, Bath etcetera I really did not know anything about Bristol until I got here. (WT-en) Paulalatifa 05:37, 3 March 2010 (EST)

February

Pensacola (OtBP)

A wonderful city in the "less-well-known" part of Florida. I was surprised to see this wonderful guide article has not been nominated before. Best time to visit/feature the city is October-November or March-April when temperatures are pleasant. It's a shame we didn't feature this before the oil spill, but October is far enough in the future for it to be cleaned up and the beach is only one of the several attractions in the city. (WT-en) AHeneen 04:30, 15 June 2010 (EDT)

  • Support If the current rate of "clean-up" is any indication of the future, this October will be too soon, but the article itself is well done! We can keep track of the cleanup progress, I spose. Florida does not seem to be as badly affected as some areas. It would be a nice feature to reintroduce the region to tourists who have been deterred. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 05:12, 15 June 2010 (EDT)
  • Support Clean-up is almost done and it would be very good for Mardi Gras. Shall we ear mark it for that slot? (WT-en) jan 05:46, 23 August 2010 (EDT)

Ubud (DotM)

  • Support One of our star articles with an interesting destination in the heart of Bali. It's rich in culture and architecture and a must see if you are on the island. Best would be February or March. (WT-en) jan 03:16, 24 September 2010 (EDT)
  • Support Great article. --(WT-en) Tiagox2 11:48, 16 October 2010 (EDT)

January

I noticed it in the Star nomination slush pile and thought it had potential to make it as an Off the Beaten Track candidate. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:05, 17 May 2009 (EDT)

  • Support. This seems up to OtBP standards to me. And the objections last time around were fairly minorI'm actually surprised that it was slushed, rather than moved to OtBP. Usually I'd nuke the tour operators, but Guatemala can be a hairy place, I suppose. (And I don't know enough about it to judge which ones to remove. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 03:41, 17 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Moderate support. Having visited it a few months ago, I realized how far off my old dreams of star status for Flores were. Unfortunately a lost passport thwarted my plans of making it an awesome star article while I was in town. Many of the listings are not on the map, and I think several of them may not even exist anymore, but I made a new map today and placed as much as I could. It is a decent article, but it can get a lot better.... and is still way behind LP's coverage ;) It would also be ideal for the Tikal article to be up to guide status, since that's the reason 90% of Flores' visitors are here (and if it were up to status, I would propose it instead). But I think it may suffice if nothing better comes along (WT-en) cacahuate talk 15:14, 17 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Don't support Neutral - I ran into this a while ago, while looking for candidates outside our usual areas' (Asia & North America), and considered nominating it - but decided against it since I found a lot of the information really lagging. A good example is the do listings "rent a canoe/hire a covered boat" fine, but some listings - or in case it's to disorganised for listings, some information on where to do this/how much should I pay, would be nice. and Wes' comments above just add's to that. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:52, 17 May 2009 (EDT)

Kochi (DotM)

Amazing, huge, and very complete article of a nice indian city. --2.80.110.11 13:09, 8 August 2010 (EDT)

It looks like the article is preparing to be districted. Is that the case? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 23:49, 16 August 2010 (EDT)
  • Support Well done article with good maps. (WT-en) jan 04:08, 4 October 2010 (EDT)

December

A not well-known national park in the U.S.A., and a nice guide article. --81.193.162.197 11:49, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

  • Has there been discussion about this nomination somewhere else? I don't have anything against the article, but as far as I can tell, not a single comment in favor has been made in the three months since the nomination, and yet it's on the schedule for December. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 01:30, 2 August 2010 (EDT)
I don't think this has been discussed anywhere. Nominations have been moving around a lot on the schedule, so I don't remember who put it there. It could have even been me. Since there is no support or opposition, it is unknown as to whether it should be here or reslushed. Would you like to make a statement of opposition? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:16, 2 August 2010 (EDT)
  • Oppose - while PFNP is certainly a nice article, it's not quite in the condition I'd expect of a DotM/OtBP. I'd like to see some more pictures, a more detailed map, and more thorough information in the Understand and See sections, not to mention a general livening-up of the text. Like I said, it's a good article, but we have plenty of real stellar national park articles on Wikivoyage, so I don't think we should this as an example just yet. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 16:16, 25 September 2010 (EDT)
    • As long as it's a guide-quality article, it should be eligible for DotM. We don't exactly have a glut of stellar nominations here. (WT-en) LtPowers 14:14, 26 September 2010 (EDT)
  • Note that I changed the image back to that of a petrified log from the raven image that was added - the image should be iconic for the destination, and in this case that means either the Painted Desert or (better) a petrified log. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:07, 16 November 2010 (EST)

Vientiane (DotM)

The capital of Laos, an increasingly popular tourist destination (no longer OtBP) and a very comprehensive article that almost suffers from too much information. Best in the winter season (Nov-Mar or thereabouts). (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:40, 24 April 2009 (EDT)

Support but it needs in some sections (Get around, Drink) a traveller who was their as some dates (e.g. 2007 for deadline of bars) are totally outdated... (WT-en) jan 05:17, 1 May 2009 (EDT)
Support. Could use a manual of style wash, but it has great imagery and makes a strong case for visiting. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones
Support Although I agree that the page would be better if it were formatted properly and if the sites were organized according to locale, I think it's a nice page. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 20:41, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
  • Support Reluctantly. This is when I get mixed feelings about Wikivoyage. Vientianne is one of my favourite places and the page well captures my feelings about it. But do I really want it full of Wikivoyage readers next time I go there?(WT-en) Shep 14:30, 28 August 2009 (EDT)
Why not? We're a charming bunch. Most of us, anyway. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 17:21, 28 August 2009 (EDT)
Well, you can have too much of a good thing!(WT-en) Shep 09:07, 29 August 2009 (EDT)
We promise not to invite the spambots. - (WT-en) Dguillaime 21:33, 28 August 2009 (EDT)
I don't think Wikivoyagers are going to come in such droves that it will take away from the charm of the city. I guess you could try to think of it in other terms: Visitors help the local/nation's economy (don't know much about Laotian economics, but money is usually a good thing), you can showcase a city that you hold dear to you so that others can share that same type of experience, it can help fight against stereotypes that Laos is a war-torn Hmong refugee nation, etc. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 13:02, 29 August 2009 (EDT)
I note this has migrated to May I've never been to Vientiane, but May is hot and miserable for much of the region, and according to this chart, it's also the rainy season. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 18:56, 9 January 2010 (EST)
Wasn't this scheduled for this month? When and why did it get moved? You should not go anywhere in Laos in that period - stinking hot and wet. Best in October to March period.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:22, 10 January 2010 (EST)
Stefan replaced Vientiane with Nara due to 1300th festival of Nara. I agree it is not the right time. Shall we switch Gilis instead? (WT-en) jan 08:22, 15 January 2010 (EST)

November

I am on a hunt for non-European OtbP candidates, and am surpised that Kakadu has not been nominated previously. Wonderful place, good article. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:48, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

  • Support It's an interesting destination with a well written article. Only the amount of boxes is slightly over the top. (WT-en) jan 04:11, 27 April 2010 (EDT)
  • Support. Good article, but I don't agree on it being OTBP. It's one of the largest tourist draws in the Northern Territory after Uluru NP. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 13:02, 7 August 2010 (EDT)

I was browsing when I saw this one. Although it's only at usable status, it has enough stuff for guide status--the only problem I see is the fact that nothing has an address. Not quite sure if it's a DOTM or OTBP, but I tend towards DOTM b/c it definitely has name recognition. Don't know much about time, other than Summer is a no. (WT-en) Rastapopulous 20:15, 18 November 2009 (EST)

  • Support, obviously. (WT-en) Rastapopulous 20:21, 18 November 2009 (EST)
  • Almost. A few things are needed first. In addition to looking up addresses, I think the article would need descriptions for the buy listings, and there are a few other significant mos issues related to content placement & section headers. Once those things are taken care of, I'd support it for OtBPI don't think Death Valley is too often visited. Per the article's intro, Many potential visitors ignore the park.... --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:47, 18 November 2009 (EST)
I've never been there nor do I know the area, but I can probably do some addresses. Should there be coordinates for the sights in-park? (WT-en) Rastapopulous 20:49, 18 November 2009 (EST)
  • So almost nothing actually has an address in Death Valley (even hotels and the like), but some things have GPS coordinates. Should those be used instead? (WT-en) Rastapopulous 17:32, 19 November 2009 (EST)
    • Presumably even a hotel is on some road, and that road has a name, yes? Do you have an example of one that is not? (WT-en) LtPowers 17:57, 19 November 2009 (EST)
Yes, they are on named roads, but Highway 190 South isn't a terribly useful address... (WT-en) Rastapopulous 18:01, 19 November 2009 (EST)
Sure it is; it's at least half the information you need. =) No reason to leave it out, is there? (WT-en) LtPowers 09:59, 20 November 2009 (EST)
I could certainly include it. However, I think I should add GPS coordinates too. (WT-en) Rastapopulous 10:50, 20 November 2009 (EST)
I don't see why not; that's what the "lat" and "long" fields are for. (WT-en) LtPowers 13:02, 20 November 2009 (EST)
  • Support I scheduled it for October because it is the start of the high season and it's enough time to finish the buy listings. (WT-en) jan 08:00, 19 April 2010 (EDT)
  • Is there any reason why this is still usable? This needs to be a guide or made a guide; otherwise it cannot be featured. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus (talkcontribs)

October

Kununurra (OtBP)

It was recommended that I nominate the Kununurra article for an OtBP, so here goes. I've just finished bringing it up to guide status. The peak season is during the dry season from April to October so round about now would be close to the ideal time of the year. - 05:18, 15 April 2010 (EDT)

  • Support, with the proviso that the Understand section needs a bit of restructuring. The opening para (which I have just re-written a little) is almost repeated in the history sub-section. That little quibble aside, it is a lovely article about an amazing area. I have passed through Kununurra twice while outback-bashing and it is indeed a charming little place, surrounded by rugged natural beauty. This would make a great OtbP feature. As an aside it also highlights the very good work being done by (WT-en) Cardboardbird on our Western Australia articles. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:43, 15 April 2010 (EDT)
I've placed it into August and moved Ravello to October in order to break up the European cluster in the summer. If anyone objects, we can discuss it. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:18, 16 April 2010 (EDT)
There's discussion on the talk page on scheduling issues, which are of immediate importance because we're over a day late on switching the OtBP because Kawasaki isn't ready. (WT-en) LtPowers 07:32, 16 April 2010 (EDT)
  • Support Good article but i would benefit if it had a map. I was surprised to read about the border and it would be helpful for orientation. Also two Get out entries are red (=empty) article. Maybe someone with a bit of a knowledge fills them with basic infos.(WT-en) jan 07:52, 19 April 2010 (EDT)
  • Support. (WT-en) Jpatokal 19:12, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

Tashkent (DotM)

  • Support. Good guides to this region are hard to come by! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:31, 18 June 2010 (EDT)
  • Support, but the "Others" category in "See" contains some unformatted listings, and are any of the listings under the generic titles in "See" found in the "Old Town"? Are there district names we could use for the whole See section? I would also like to see a few more pictures. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:06, 20 June 2010 (EDT)
  • Support Very good article and seems to be very accurate. Only downside is that there is no map but we have some time so someone might handle that issue. (WT-en) jan 05:08, 2 July 2010 (EDT)

September

Surprisingly, there are not many American nominees, and if I'm not mistaken, this would be the first feature from Pennsylvania. Because the OtBP's operate from the 15 of each month, this would be best featured in September so that it would cover Applefest in early October. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:11, 30 October 2009 (EDT)

  • Support I thought support by the nominator was implied, but I guess most people also give support below, so I'll do the same. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 15:49, 14 November 2009 (EST)
  • Support - would like some section introductions, but it's up to scratch, and a nice example of what small-town, USA articles could be. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 17:55, 14 November 2009 (EST)
  • Meh I'm not sure there's enough things to see/do to justify featuring it as an OtBP. The way I imagine OtBP is featuring little-known places that WT browsers would want to travel from far away to visit. While Franklin seems like a nice place to stop by if I were traveling through, there's nothing spectacular about the town that I feel warrants it any special recognition. It has a church (as if there aren't hundreds of historic churches in the Northeast/Midwest), a couple small museums (none noteworthy), and a racetrack (again, not a noteworthy one). Everything else in see & do sections can be found in most small towns...park, ice rink, theater, bowling alleys. Plus, almost every small town in the Northeast/Midwest hosts some kind of fall festival. So, in my opinion, it's just another non-noteworthy small town. Use this for OtBP as a last resort only. (WT-en) AHeneen 00:19, 6 December 2009 (EST)
  • I am sort of with AHeneen on this one. Well written and presented but it is just not very interesting. Why would the article make anybody go there? The first thing you read is that there are cheap flights from Cleveland. An understand section would help I guess. I am all for American articles being nominated but I would have thought there are more captivating articles than this one? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:35, 6 December 2009 (EST)
I have wondered the same about some destinations, but we have featured Spring Green (there is less to do there than in Franklin, and I don't imagine international tourists wanting to plan a trip there. It looks like a place of interest to domestic tourists that have never heard of it before). The cities of Sligo and Saint Martins Island also seem to have nothing really to do or see, but they were featured. Is this article somehow worse than those? I guess I was under the impression that all cities that can sustain an article would be able to become DotM or OtBP once the article was up to standard. I think some OtBPs are the "hidden gems"-type of destinations and other cities may be more "if you're in the area, you may want to check out this city"-type of destinations. Do you think the second type should not be featured? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 16:24, 6 December 2009 (EST)
I can't agree with those comparisons, since they all have pretty clear angles. Spring Green is utterly bizarre, and a real top destination for American architecture fansworth making the 3 hour trek from Chicago; Sligo is one of our nine Irish cities, and the principal population center in the northwest of Ireland, through which anyone in the area will likely pass; and St Martins Island is a tropical paradise, and one of our only 5 ODs for Bangladesh. These aren't simply useful articles, they're things that pique interest in trips (and in using our guides on those trips). The one tiny PA town that would fit that angle that I can think of would be the ever ridiculous Punxsutawney (if it were a good article).
The Franklin guide looks like a great one for anyone passing through the area, but is there a reason why people would seek it out? Per our criteria, personal affection for the destination isn't a valid reason to oppose a nomination, but I'd still like to remind of the consideration that the DotM/OtBP's sole purpose here is to get people interested in the site. It would at least be nice if the article had an understand section highlighting what makes the town really unique/important and worth seeking out. IMO, though, this is the kind of article I'd rather see pushed to star status (since it would be a nice example of how to properly do a small US town) than featured as a dotm.
Also, I think these two factoids need to make it into that article ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:57, 6 December 2009 (EST)
But even from as close as Pennsylvania, I can't imagine anyone planning a trip just to visit Spring Green. It just wouldn't seem worth it unless you were also going somewhere else. I agree that Spring Green looks interesting, but a three hour trip from Chicago is still a nice day trip. People make similar trips to Franklin from Buffalo. I would be surprised if people from Europe, Asia, etc. planned special trips just to go to either Spring Green or Franklin. That's why I think it's like Franklin, not because it's "boring". I thought it was a "cute" feature.
At any rate, to answer your question about "Why should someone visit Franklin?", people typically visit Franklin to view all of the Victorian architecture, get away from the city/see some nature, and to see the church (although AHaneen considers it to be like any other "historic" church, I think it's more liked than many American historic churches, because the windows are the focus rather than the history. Of course, those who don't like Tiffany will likely not be impressed). I don't know if that makes it sound any better... Franklin is part of the Oil Region (where oil was first discovered/drilled in North America and the Standard Oil Company was founded), so a visit to Franklin usually entails a visit to Titusville and maybe Oil City or Pithole. Probably if this were being featured with Titusville or as Venango County, its value and interest to travelers would be more evident.
I will work on adding some sort of "Understand" information, as there is actually no mention of the Victorian houses, and only small allusions are made to the oil history, which are both important. Feel free to add more critiques, though. I don't think it's that far off from a star, although there is no map. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:50, 14 December 2009 (EST)

Okay, I added an understand section that *may* make the page more appealing. I also added the "Walking Tours", since the architecture is so popular, and taking the tour would likely make visiting much more interesting. Does it need something more? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 21:38, 23 December 2009 (EST)

I quite like the article now, I don't see the reason why not to support it. I think this is the charm of Wikivoyage: it features destinations that no other travel guide would ever think of. (WT-en) globe-trotter 20:19, 7 January 2010 (EST)

One of my favorite places in the world, and the article's in decent shape as well. Not ruined yet, but should be listed before it turns into the next Kuta. Best season is May-Oct, but quite usable any time of the year. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:37, 30 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Support. Great article, and quite OtBP. Time to fill the queue with Indonesian articles, methinks. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:32, 30 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. A lovely place. Certainly not ruined yet as Jani says but it might be going that way. This nomination has prompted me to do a bit of work on the article also. I know Gili T especially well and a few little updates would help an already good article. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:07, 30 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Unsure It's a good article but are the Gili Islands still OtbP? It's definitely on the standard backpacker trail and even my travel agency in Zurich offered me Gili T as part of a package tour from Lombok to Bali. I will not disagree if we continue under OtbP but maybe users are surprised. (WT-en) jan 11:42, 5 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Yeah, I was thinking about that too, but it's still pretty OtBP outside the backpacker set -- no branded hotels etc. Even the package tour you mention probably only stops over in Gili T, right? (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:23, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
The organised tour started in Senggigi, Lombok stopped two nights at Gili T, then onwards to Nusa Lemboggan for some snorkeling and finished in Sanur, Bali. I had a quick look and the two biggest german speaking travel companies now offer for all package tourists this option. They do this primarily because European travel companies are still not allowed to book indonesian airlines due to the EU ban. Regards, (WT-en) jan 05:08, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
Strictly speaking I guess Gili T (especially) is no longer OtBT. And even within Indonesia you could make an argument for many places better deserving of this tag. The very nature of the place, the absence of any name hotels and the good state of the WT article makes it a valid candidate though I think.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:15, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
I added the Gili Islands in the schedule for February because it's a good time to start the preparation for a trip but Bali is in March... How about feature Bali and the Gilis jointly in March? That would make an interesting combination for travellers. (WT-en) jan 05:34, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
I think it is preferred to keep the DotM/OtBP diverse. Although there may be instances when the same country occupied both features, I'd rather avoid that. It makes the features less exciting when one nation dominates, and it doesn't showcase the full scope of Wikivoyage. How about instead of featuring this with Bali we switch it with Tobacco Caye? Although Vientiane and Gili Islands are both in Southeast Asia, at least they are not both in the same country. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 11:41, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
Chubby, I forgot the different changing dates for DotM and OtbP so you are right, they will be featured for two weeks. I will do the change with Tobacco Caye. Feel free to change it further if there are any other ideas. (WT-en) jan 05:17, 7 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Withdrawn support. The more I think about this, the more I do not think it is such a good idea. The article is great and I love the place. But I think we are stretching the definition of OtBP here. The destination is relatively well known these days and as Jan pointed out it even crops up as part of fairly bland European (especially) package tours. There is also the country factor....... We are proposing to feature Indonesia twice in the near future which in itself is great. But there are some good, well-developed articles for truly OtBP destinations in Indonesia and I can see those getting short shrift because we have featured the Gili Islands which does not altogether fit the OtBP definition.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 23:28, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
Well, what category it should feature in shouldn't be the basis of your support, neither should whether you like or don't like the destinition, or when it should be featured. It should be judged on it's merits as an article. Details like that merely calls for discussion of those issues. Destinations can be parked her for a year if need be for the right timing. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 23:36, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
Really? If the point of these nominations is to highlight a destination and then judge it on the merit of the WT article with no regard for whether it fits a set of criteria, then I have completely misunderstood. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:01, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
You might want to give the #Select paragraph a re-read then :o) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 00:07, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
Ah. Yes. Indeed. That'll teach me eh? :o) Not for the first time, thank you Stefan for pointing me in the right direction. So.... no problems at all with the article it is very good. It should though be a DoTM candidate not OtBP. There. :) --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:43, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Schedule proposal I think we should feature the Gilis in late spring 2010 (May/June) as DotM as compared to the competition of Niamey, Tobacco Caye, Hilversum etc. it is not really anymore OtBP. I also read Select and think that with the partial lift of the EU ban on indonesian airlines the no. of package tourists will significantly increase and in 2010 no one will argue anymore that it is OtBP. I think we should keep Hyderabad as proposed in January 2010 as it is the best time for a visit but Christchurch could be an alternative to the Asian overweights in the list. Would anyone oppose a shift of the Gilis to the Dotm section? (WT-en) jan 07:44, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
May or June is good scheduling for the Gilis: good weather but before the islands become over-run in July and August. The months to avoid are December to February when rains can be fairly extreme and the islands flood (wading through one metre of floodwater on Gili T is not much fun!). For reasons already stated, DoTM makes more sense to me for this destination.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:39, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
I entered the Gilis for May as DotM (WT-en) jan 09:56, 19 November 2009 (EST)
Excellent jan. I pledge to have a Gili Islands map ready soon. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:59, 19 November 2009 (EST)
I have been looking at this article very closely, and the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Gili Islands should actually be a region, and each island have its own article. I have made the proposal at Talk:Gili Islands, and think we should decide on this before it appears as a DotM.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:20, 21 February 2010 (EST)
Article is now in great shape - or articles rather as there are now 4 of them. It ought to appear as DotM before October when the rain starts. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 07:19, 16 March 2010 (EDT)
I switched the Gilis to September in the schedule. The main reasons are: 1. We then have enough time to bring it to star status 2. We have a little more distance to the Bali Dotm now and 3. it would be too late for Figueres in 2010. Any opposition? (WT-en) jan 07:56, 16 March 2010 (EDT)

Hilversum (OtBP)

Thanks to User:(WT-en) Globe-trotter, this page looks really great! At a glance, the only thing I can see that it needs is pictures. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 01:20, 27 July 2009 (EDT)

  • Support. WowGlobe-trotter did a lot of work this week! It looks great. More pictures would certainly be nice, but I think it's already up to OtBP standards. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 04:04, 27 July 2009 (EDT)
  • Thanks a lot for the nomination! :) You are right about the pictures, I came home yesterday and will try to make some and add them to the page. (WT-en) Globe-trotter 15:17, 27 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Support. Amazing work! What's the best time for this, spring? (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:34, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
  • I'd say April-September is the best climate here, in the winter it's not so pleasant cycling or walking around. (WT-en) Globe-trotter 10:10, 28 August 2009 (EDT)
  • I added some pictures, and I'll add some more later on. (WT-en) Globe-trotter 19:33, 31 August 2009 (EDT)

Superbly written and even better presented. Not far short of star quality. And a fine, interesting city to boot. In summer, of course. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:14, 21 December 2009 (EST)

  • Support A nice article and looks like a great place to visit. The Drink section seems to be the longest in the article--is there a good reason for that (I guess this is England) or has every pub in the city been listed. A few "see" listings don't have an address/location. The Understand section in general could be lengthened...a lot of listings in the article are mentioned by district/street and so an "orientation" section would be useful; climate and more history (four sentences for 2000 years!?) would also be helpful additions to the article. Those few improvements aside, the article is very nice and I think it is a good choice to feature as DotM. As far as timing goes, would summer be best? There's three festivals that sound interesting in June, July, and August. (WT-en) AHeneen 21:53, 21 December 2009 (EST)
  • Support Surprised I never noticed this one before. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 19:16, 22 December 2009 (EST)
  • Support. This is pretty much exactly what we want from a featured article, it's a guide article in fine shape, covers an interesting destination, and immediately makes a compelling case for visiting. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:07, 22 December 2009 (EST)

July

I've finally gotten around to listifying and reorganizing everything in this article, and just tonight finished the overview map and added four new images to the article. I think it's more-or-less ready for consideration for Destination of the Month.

I should point out that while I wrote much of the prose currently in the article, a fair bit of it also came from User:(WT-en) Nicksand, many many moons ago. Considering the age of the text, I think he might be surprised to see how much of it survives in the current draft. Kudos to him and User:(WT-en) Savogt1, also, for writing about the bars and clubs, because I've never been to any of them myself.

I'm most interested in your thoughts on the tone of the article, and secondarily the style. I still am not sure I have an intuitive grasp of the house tone and so would greatly appreciate any thoughts and impressions on that topic. The article's content is extensive but could hardly be said to be complete; I'll be working on adding some of the glaring omissions in dribs and drabs but I don't think that should keep it from being featured.

Let me know what you think.

  • Support. Very nice indeed and not too far away from a starnom I would suggest. A couple of small points, neither of which effect the DotM nomination: the lead image would benefit from a caption and it would be nice to have some libraries in Cope, especially as these seem to be the best bet for public internet access. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 23:58, 29 May 2010 (EDT)
    • I will look up some libraries to add. There are bunches all over the city and suburbs. As for the lead image, any caption would seem to be redundant with the image itself; I'm also a fan of the frameless look for the lead image, but I can change it if needed. (WT-en) LtPowers 07:39, 30 May 2010 (EDT)

        • Why not move up one of the other items on the tentative schedule? Since each article only gets one shot at DotM, I'd like to have this one looking its best? (WT-en) LtPowers 18:42, 1 June 2010 (EDT)
  • I don't know that July is the best time to feature Rochester, but if we don't, we'll be waiting until next spring. (The most important festivals are in May and June). (WT-en) LtPowers 15:48, 16 June 2010 (EDT)

Falun (OtBP)

Wow, this old mining town in North-western Sweden must be one of the best destination guides in Scandinavia! Very nearly a star even. Ooh, a non-city Chinese DOTM candidate! The information is all in there and pretty pictures too, although a little cleanup is needed (esp. Sleep). (WT-en) Jpatokal 20:51, 19 January 2010 (EST)

  • Support. I really like this article. It does need more clean up as Jani says (I have already done a fair bit). Would be nice if one of our China hands completed the job. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:16, 19 January 2010 (EST)
  • Support. Very nice article, with just a little bit of clean-up. In the intro the first thing mentioned that the park is famous for is pandas...any panda pics for the article or info on where to see them? (WT-en) AHeneen 23:31, 19 January 2010 (EST)
  • Support. Great article! Especially considering we tend to have relatively few good park articles outside North America. If I may speak for those more or less Sino-illiterate, it looks like an OtBP, but I'll leave that decision to others. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:49, 19 January 2010 (EST)
  • Support I definitely agree with AHeneen. If it is famous for its pandas, there should be picture of a panda (in the park) on the page. I also think the page could benefit from weeding out som pictures. I like the head image, and the Grass Lake, Mirror Lake, Suzheng Village. The other pictures could go (and add a panda), in my opinion. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:34, 20 January 2010 (EST)
Panda picture yes, as that is why it is a UNESCO WHS, but let's keep it honest as the writer did. You have a close to zero chance of seeing one. I would imagine there are Snow Leopards there as well - you also won't see one. I will have a good dig later and come up with a representative flora and fauna section for the article. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:46, 20 January 2010 (EST)
Peter made a good point: This park seems OtBP. I've been to China, but not here. Anyone know this park? Is it a DotM-worthy place or OtBP? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 21:33, 20 January 2010 (EST)
With 2.5m visitors, it's obviously not OTBP to the Chinese, but a case could be made that it's OTBP for an English-speaking audience. (Not the first time this has popped up...) (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:39, 21 January 2010 (EST)
Yup. And that's an issue that will crop up more and more. We have the same with Bromo. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:46, 21 January 2010 (EST)
I have added a bit more about flora and fauna. We also need to look at the name of the article. I think it should be National Park and not Nature Reserve. Or we could use the Wikipedia solution which is Jiuzhaigou Valley. The latter might be best as much of the attraction for general visitors is the natural scenery, not the ecology. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:03, 21 January 2010 (EST)
A couple more things: I think the hotel listings should be formatted properly. Also, I think the part about winter clothing in Stay Safe could be clarified a little (or just tie together the prose a little better). It reads oddly to me to have the extreme cold followed up with the fact that you may not need a coat in the "winter sunshine". Lastly, I think the Panda Falls picture could be cut and the Pearl Waterfall image put in its place, along with either the Five Flower Lake or the Arrow Bamboo Lake. Those two lake pictures look too similar to me, and I think having both of them sort of mutes the beauty of the place a little. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 01:39, 11 February 2010 (EST)

I have wanted to get one of the Indonesian park articles to a state where it could be nominated for some weeks now and here it is. It is not the longest of articles but it provides a good, accurate guide to the park. And you get to look at one of Mr Patokallio's finest which is used as the lead image.

A bit of history for this article. When I first had a look at the East Java region articles, there was one each for Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru and another one for the national park. Clearly that did not make too much sense so all 3 were combined into one. You could make arguments for this being DoTM or OtBP. It is not that well known a destination internationally but is very much on the domestic Indonesian tour package circuit. Hence I am fairly ambivalent as to which category is more appropriate. Best time to visit is April through September. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:33, 17 October 2009 (EDT)

  • Support but unsure if OtBP or DotM. I usually tend to think that a National Park is OtBP but maybe this is different (WT-en) jan 07:27, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. I'd just barely lean towards DotM, but wouldn't object too loudly to this being an OtBP. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:34, 1 November 2009 (EST)

  • Support, looks really nice, except for the 'get out' section which is really long. (WT-en) globe-trotter 19:10, 3 January 2010 (EST)
  • Soft support because get out section needs some work. It is almost entirely linked to non-existent or empty articles. I think, that this needs to be changed before it can be a DotM. (WT-en) jan 08:09, 1 February 2010 (EST)
  • Support, Well, you do realize that Bali (the current month) only has four and Medillín (last month) only actually linked to two. The Figueres article links to three live pages and the others are there to encourage people to fill them out as those are worthwhile destinations. But, that said, as shown by previous DotMs, the number of Get Out segments seems to play a small part in choosing which article to feature. Selecting it would only work to increase potential page content (WT-en) Primecoordinator 09:20, 08 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, except I am not happy having a featured article with redlinks in Get out. Three or four suggestions for the next destination is fine for Get out I think. We do not need a long list, and definitely not one pointing to non-existent articles. It would also be nice to see a history sub-section in Understand. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:40, 8 March 2010 (EST)
Will it change anything if template-only outlines will be created for each of the destinations listed in GetOut? That's pretty easy, although it clearly doesn't make the article (nor the articles linked from it) more complete a single bit, imho. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 14:56, 8 March 2010 (EST)
Okay, I have edited out a couple of more minor destinations, have created basic pages for Besalú and Cadaqués and will add in more basic pages for the ones that are left as I have time. Hopefully, if featured, these will get fleshed out more as I am not in Spain at the moment and can't fill in restaurant and hotel info as I would like. (WT-en) Primecoordinator 14:39, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Okay, red links are gone. Uploaded a map as well, although I apparently this isn't up to Star approval folks' standards, so if anyone wants to use whatever map maker thing there is to do the proper one, I can fill in the landmarks and etc. (WT-en) Primecoordinator 11:45, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This one is dear to me, my first feeble edits on Wikivoyage was to the Korsakov guide, while sitting at the post office desperately trying to figure out where the hell I could by tickets for the ferry to Japan, information which it turned out was impossible to find anywhere both off and online. After a nice Russian grandpa type (who didn't speak any English) working in the harbour spend half a day helping me to find the small hidden-away office selling tickets, I got involved in Wikivoyage, hoping to save other adventurers the same trouble. After that experience I'm quite confident that our information Sakhalin is unrivalled anywhere on the internet! (at least in English), it's certainly leaps and bounds ahead of my Lonely Planet guide.

You may find some sections of the Okha and Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky guides deceptively empty, but trust me, it has taken many hours of work, ploughing through books and Russian websites just to get the sections filled up with what's there now - I think the hotel in Alexandrovsk alone took 4-5 hours just to find an address and phone number. Many of the pictures are results of personal requests to get them released under the CC licence, I'm especially happy about the reindeer picture, Thanks Aleut!. The Literature section on the main article are waiting for Mr Fitzgerald to finish reading up on Anton Chekov, but it's easily fixed, or the section can always be removed before a feature. The reason I'm suggesting it now, is I want to swap it in for April or May, when the mountains go light green over the dark volcanic rocks - it looks amazing!

I want to try to do it as a double feature, also linking to Russia to Japan via Sakhalin itinerary in the OtBP blurb text, so please check that one for any show stoppers as well. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 15:53, 9 January 2010 (EST)

Support. It's a great work. Something about Russia that should be translated from English into Russian, and not the other way around. The information on the web about Sakhalin is indeed scarce, so the articles look fairly complete. Still, I should say that searching for the hotel in Alexandrovsk took me less than one minute (maybe, things changed). If you feel that it is worth to do more search through Russian websites, I can try this. It will also be a pleasure for me to do the translatations for Russian version of Wikivoyage. (WT-en) Atsirlin 17:25, 9 January 2010 (EST)
He, it probably helps when you're not forced to rely on robots, any help on making those two cities look more complete in the eat, drink and buy sections will obviously be much appreciated. :o) Though, Peter had many problems as well, and he speaks Russian. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 18:30, 9 January 2010 (EST)
It's tricky. You should scan through numerous travel reports (mainly from backpackers), and you have to know where to find them. OK, I will try, and let's see what comes out. At first glance, I can see that you missed one important thing about the ferry: it is strongly subject to weather conditions, especially in winter time. Once or twice a year these ferries just stop for a week (it is a disaster, because cars and goods get jammed in Vanino). I will start to translate the articles and will try to add things on-the-fly. (WT-en) Atsirlin 07:46, 10 January 2010 (EST)
OK, I have found this thing in the Kholmsk article, but the warning about the unstable ferry schedule should be stronger, I guess. (WT-en) Atsirlin 07:54, 10 January 2010 (EST)
  • Support. Great guide, and probably the only great guide, to a fascinating OtBP destination. And ah, I forgot about the lit sectionI was about to do that before the drawn-out DDOS attack ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 17:31, 9 January 2010 (EST)
  • Support I think you did a good self-assessment though with the need for descriptions in most of the "Eat" sections. Because the individual cities on the island do not offer much on their own, I think it is important for what is there to be complete (as far as descriptions go). Okha could also be improved with a picture or two (if possible).
For the Russia to Japan via Sakhalin article, I wonder if it needs a "Get out" section. If so, I guess that would just be a list of cities near the terminus Wakkanai? I think the article is great with coverage of how to make the trip. The article is meant to be only about the transportation, right? I ask only because it doesn't suggest what to do in each city along the way as an "itinerary" (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 19:18, 9 January 2010 (EST)
I have 3 requests out for permission to use some images for Okha under CC, but no replies so far, and it's months since I send them emails. There are also many good pictures on Panoramio, but the one request I made have gotten no response either (probably doesn't speak any English). There are no usable CC licensed ones available at all (at least that I can find).
As for itinirary, yes only transportation, I wanted to leave what to see etc. to the actual guides, think it works better there. I'll try to get Khabarovsk and Wakkanai up to usable before a feature, just as a show-off :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 19:32, 9 January 2010 (EST)

Ravello (OtBP)

A little jewel on the Amalfi coast apparently, someone put a lot of work and love into this - unlike most of our other Italian destinations outside salvaged Rome. Guess we could have the whole DoTM OtBP path discussion again, but even though it's a relatively popular destination (in the hugely popular amalfi coast) but it's only home of 2,500 people. I really don't care either way, as long as it's featured - so be my guest to move it up there.

  • Support obviously --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:33, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Looks like you need another category. This a great little article. But perhaps Ravello is not big enough nor easy enough to reach for DoTM. On the other hand it's not exactly OtBP either.(WT-en) Shep 13:39, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Strong support Stefan, how do you find this great articles? Nevertheless Ravello is in imho a OtBP and excellent for the scenery and the good wine.(WT-en) jan 13:58, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. Ravello is gorgeousI always snicker a little when Americans rave about their profligate vacations in Tuscany (which I rather think looks like Virginia...), when they miss out on the Amalfi Coast. A fine little article, and I think it's fine for OtBP (whereas the Amalfi Coast as a whole or Sorrento would be DotM material). --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:41, 19 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support I think the page would look better if the Ravello Cathedral image was removed. It looks like a postcard, and the copyright pasted onto the picture is annoying. Would anyone be opposed to getting rid of it? The page has plenty of nice photos and the church photo is not particularly grand anyway. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 14:10, 28 October 2009 (EDT)
Going to remove it, and vfd'ed on shared, it's under ND. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 14:32, 28 October 2009 (EDT)

It's one of the world's top tourist destinations, the U.S. capital, my hometown, with a collection 3 star articles and 9 guides, something like 25 maps marking every last listing in the guide, and we've even managed to get the breadcrumbs to display! I've gone through the (rather stiff) travel guide competition at the bookstores downtown, and I think our guide is competitive with the best of them. I'm still polishing it before future star nominations (getting better photos, proofing, weeding out some of the stranger rubbish I've written, etc.), but I think it's certainly ready for a DotM feature. The only bad time of the year to visit is summer, but that's also peak season, so I'd consider it fine to feature any time of year. The "classic" visiting time of year, though, is of course cherry blossom season. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:27, 12 October 2009 (EDT)

  • Support Well, this is one of our best city guides across the whole site, so I really can't find any reason we shouldn't feature it. Is cherry blossom season April or May? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 09:39, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
No way to tell in advance, as it depends on the weather, or perhaps whether the beavers see their shadow. I'd bank on global warming and say April. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:23, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support It's an amazing article and i think it is best featured in April because starting with the Easter holidays the main travel season starts.(WT-en) jan 08:56, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support Wonderful article and one that should be used as an example of how to write a large city article. Spring would be good.... best to avoid summer as the weather is truly foul. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:32, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. Easy call on this. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 23:00, 15 October 2009 (EDT)

March

Tromsø (OtBP)

For reasons that still baffles me, someone decided to spend a great deal of time whipping up an amazing guide for this nice arctic city, but then flat out refused to include any sort of practical information like addresses or phone numbers in the listings. It's been bugging me for quite some time, so I've tried my best to remedy the situation, include all the missing practical information and bring it more in line with the MOS. Time to feature this I think - best June-August with the midnight sun February-March for the Aurora and many outdoor winter activities. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 18:19, 29 December 2009 (EST)

  • Support. Looks like a straightforwardly great feature, and I'll take your word that we should use it for dotm instead of otbp. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 10:52, 30 December 2009 (EST)
I'm not at all sure, are Murmansk/Nuuk/Fairbanks OtBP? if so, this should probably be as well. But as far as Scandinavia is concerned, it's a pretty major destination, and with a population of some 65.000, it's by far the largest city in Northern Scandinavia. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 14:10, 7 January 2010 (EST)

Bali (DotM)

(WT-en) Burmesedays did an absurdly good job on all the Bali articles, amazingly within the span of a month! It's only our second guide-level region, and I'd call it the best one on Wikivoyage. It's a perfect DotM, and I think it would be a crime not to feature it. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:35, 30 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Support. Err.... I guess nobody is surprised by that :). Best time to visit is April to October but Bali does not really have a low season --(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:11, 30 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. Hear yea, really insanely great work! So... looking over the climate section, March would be an ideal good month to feature it no? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:40, 30 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. I would suggest that we feature Bali in March as it is the month when Nyepi takes place. (WT-en) jan 11:07, 5 October 2009 (EDT)

February

In an effort to break a record for shortest time from article creation to otbp nom, ladies and gentleboys, I present you Tobacco Caye, in 4 minutes flat. You can stand on one shore, and with powerful lungs, spit across to the other. Aside from Caribbean hurricane season, there's not a terrible time to feature it. And no, there's not very much more you can say about it, it's a small article, and will likely always remain so (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:06, 16 January 2009 (EST)

Support Everything obviously looks to be in order :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 01:38, 23 January 2009 (EST)

  • Support - Great little article. Let's run this in November or December, after the hurricane season and as the weather in North America grows cold again. (It's when people start thinking about their Caribbean vacations). (WT-en) WineCountryInn 15:05, 24 January 2009 (EST)
  • Support -- with reservations. The article certainly qualifies on its merits, but I'm detecting a growing tendency not to consider a place "really" OtBP unless it's a dinky desert island in the middle of nowhere. If we do use this one (and make no mistake, I favor it), let's slot it in at a time when some other kinds of OtBPs have been in the spotlight for a while. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:57, 24 February 2009 (EST)

Medellín (DotM)

Quite surprised that this hasn't been nominated before. Addresses & phone numbers are listed for all restaurants and hotels. There's a good "learn" section. The "talk" section has a couple interesting notes. The "get out" section isn't lacking. The only problems I can see are that the "If you only have a day" feels out of place (it's nice, but shouldn't it be elsewhere in the article?) and there is a "$" price scheme to the "eat" and "sleep" sections, but no guide to what $, $$, $$$, etc. represent. It also could use 2-3 more pictures (although there are already many good ones there), especially a cityscape pic. This would be a good choice for February DoTM as it is non-US/European and Feb. is the second driest month and quite temperate for all those Wikivoyage browsers stuck in N.Hemisphere winter.

  • Support for above reasons. (WT-en) AHeneen 22:43, 27 November 2009 (EST)
  • Support. Very informative, well written and well presented. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:28, 6 December 2009 (EST)
  • Contentwise support, but needs a few formatting tweaks. Lead picture must be improved (pretty good selection in article itself though), the Botero painting pic is a copyvio and the Eat/Sleep sections have to be reorganized to Budget/Midrange/Splurge. Niamey (OtBP)

Found this one, and I LOVE it!! so I tried to beef it up to standards. The eat section is chaotic but flat out amazing! and there is loads of other good information in there. If you find anything wrong, please help fix it, I want to see that eat section featured really bad, and it would be one of our few African features - they really don't hang on trees :)

  • Support! --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 00:31, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Really interesting article and I see you have done a load of work on it Stefan... kudos. I am not convinced it is guide status yet though. Needs more background info; perhaps an Understand section would do the job. I will try to dive in there and help with the formatting when I have a minute. With some further clean up and expansion, definitely a support. I love the info box which gives the price of used socks in the market - tremendous :)--(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:38, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. Great find! It does need an understand section, though"X is the capital of Y" is not a whole lot of context. Should be easy to throw together before a feature, though. Also, it might be worth considering whether this could be a DotM, rather than an OtBP. It certainly isn't a major tourist hub, but it is the capital and largest city of a big nation. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:44, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
Yeah, I know it's a bit ethnocentric probably, but we are in the middle of the desert in a city of less than a million in a country I suspect most people have never even heard of. The above rationale fits a bit better to Khartoum which I nominated above, not on a tourist trails either, but a major African city. Anyway, added an introduction and a climate and history section. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:27, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
Maybe I think the listings should be formatted properly first. I am also not sure about the lack of "See" and "Do" options. I have to ask: Is there anyone who can verify that this city only has 3 sites? I feel like I'm running into a wall with that question, but if it can be avoided, I'd like to support it on the basis of completeness rather than on my own ignorance (and assumed ignorance of those who will see the feature). Anyone who checks this page been to Niamey by any chance? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:07, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
OK, some points here. I did a thorough update making sure everything outside the eat section is properly formatted, and in the same process I read up up quite extensively on the city to find addresses etc., and I'm pretty sure the see and do sections are near complete (LP, Tripadvisor, IgoUgo for example don't have any more than we have, and wikipedia barely has an article. As for the restaurant listings; I think they are awesome, and I think disqualifying a guide on this basis is a slippery slope, it's not a star nomination. Dharamsala, Sihanoukville or Virgin Gorda didn't have complete phone numbers and adresses on all the listings either, and using the new listings format is not a requirement as far as I'm aware. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 07:07, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

It's the debate about well formatted text versus the listings template again :) A small point, but it would be good if the prices were all formatted as per WT style guidelines (i.e with a comma for the thousands and the currency symbol before the amount). Also, is the currently-used "F" an acceptable abbreviation of the West African Franc? Or should it be Fr? I have already re-done all the phone numbers to be consistent and in line with WT style and am happy to do the currency, if we agree on an abbreviation.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:24, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
I guess I should clarify what I meant by proper "formatting". I don't mean that it needs to be star status and have information in each space. What I mean is that in this case, the "Eat" listings should be listed as the (eat name=, Etc.) format (which they are not). I think you did some work on this already. I am not really referring to the content as much as the presentation, although the content is also much easier to critique if it is in the proper format. It's not a requirement, but I think that it should be. It doesn't require any knowledge or research about a location to do; it just requires time. I don't think that's such a slippery slope. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 15:07, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
If it's not a requirement, it's not a requirement until it's been proposed and agreed on either on this talk page or in our policy for guide level articles, it could probably use discussion, so I suggest you go ahead and do that. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:42, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
Apologies for appearing overly-anal when there are larger matters being discussed, but my question about the currency? I believe it should be either F 1,000 or Fr 1,000. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 23:56, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Support I went to a bookstore and looked at the few sources that had Niamey travel (sadly they didn't have the Bradt guide). Even if other sites exist in the city, you are correct that our guide does at least match the other guides in coverage. Probably the "Eat" section surpasses them. As for the formatting, even if the conclusion of the discussion is that it is not wanted, since this city does not yet have a tentative month, I think there is plenty of time to format it. I could do it myself when I have time if no one else wants to. Oh, and a comment was made above about whether this is a DotM or OtBP... I am thinking DotM, since it is a capital city. If the capital city can't be a DotM, then can any city? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 20:12, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
I Think this was never agreed on, as it's highly subjective, but I do think capitals can be OtBP, have you ever heard of Palikir, Lomé or Castries before? Though it's not something I'm particularly adamant about. The whole country of Niger have 60.000 tourist arrivals per year compared to 55.000 on previously OtBP Svalbard and 60.000 on the Falkland islands from cruise ships alone, though that was not techically OtBP. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:05, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
I DO have the Bradt guide! It's great (22 pages of info/maps for Niamey) and hopefully a lot of the hotels/restaurants listed are still open. Unfortunately, the security situation has changed a lot since the guide was written (for almost everywhere besides the southwest)...such a shame because places like Agadez and Air/Tenere are now very unsafe/impossible(legally) to reach yet they seem far more intriguing than Niamey. I'm quite busy, but I'll certainly try to find some time over the next few weeks to fill in some good Niamey info. I agree with Sertman that this should be an OtBP. (WT-en) AHeneen 22:49, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

→ discussion about OtBP vs DoTM is getting general, moved to Wikivoyage Talk:Destination of the Month candidates

  • Support I've added quite a bit of info the last two days, creating, adding to, or rewriting the Climate, orientation, climate, by plane, addresses, see, do, buy, learn, & contact sections. The few things I've got left are: expanding "History", add local operators under "Tourism Information", add "By boat" & "By car" and cleanup the "By bus" sections in Get in, "Respect" & "Stay safe" maybe need a rewrite, add money exchange under "Cope", add to "Get out", & add lots of pictures. With a little more work, we can truly bring this to guide status. A few good sources for you to help contribute are: Niger Ministry of Tourism website en Francais, InfosNiger.com also in French, The Bradt Guide to Nigeria on Google Books page 93, & Nigerien Embassy in Canada click "Travel & Tourism". Not sure how copyright would impact this, but the guide Google Books has maps which could be traced to give this article a map. (WT-en) AHeneen 22:28, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
Thanks a bunch for that, awsome! don't think I have the urge to fiddle any more with it, but I'll chip in if it comes back. As for maps - that is a definite nono! no need though, Openstreetmap has nearly complete coverage of the city, and most definitely good enough for a WT style map if you get it aligned right. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 22:40, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
One other thing is timing. I see it has been moved to January. December & January have the best (coolest) weather, while February-May are quite hot (around 40 degrees). I think that January is good timing...December or even November might be a little better, but of course priority should be given to destinations nominated earlier. (WT-en) AHeneen 00:33, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
  • The Niamey article reads so well now. Well done everyone who put the effort in. As an aside, here is another interesting OtBP African article. Needs a huge amount of tidying up but the information content is very rich. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 07:12, 28 October 2009 (EDT)

Nara (DotM)

The article is not yet ready, and unfortunately, it is a Japanese city, but I think it would be great to feature Nara in January, since it will be celebrating its 1300th anniversary (since it was Japan's capital) in 2010. Other months in 2010 would probably be okay, as well. I just think that since January marks the beginning of the anniversary year, it might be the best month. Anyways, comments? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 17:46, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

Much more awesome than Kyoto, wish we could get this up to speed and feature it, but I pretty much have my hands full atm. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 16:50, 4 December 2009 (EST)
Aw, why does everyone on this site hate on Kyoto? Sure, everyone goes there, but it deserves to be called one of Japan's best cities. It's great! Do you think we should just slush this nomination? The January slot is full, and the purpose of the nomination was to feature it during this major anniversary year... (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 19:39, 4 December 2009 (EST)
I lived there? :o) nah, Kyoto is nice, Rits was awesome, it just takes so much effort. Nara is much more, hmmmm, approachable? Don't know - it really just needs info on Yakushi-ji, Gangō-ji and Tōshōdai-ji, which isn't that much effort, to make it presentable. (Not that I'm volunteering or anything) and Vientienne is pretty much a year-round destination, which can easily be rescheduled. We might still get lucky - let's slush it come January, if no-one has stepped up. I'd volunteer to do a formatting run if someone does the rest. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 20:09, 4 December 2009 (EST)
Done. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 23:19, 4 December 2009 (EST)
And done, added Japanese and addresses to all entries where it was missing, and added a drink listing to the nearly empty section, Nara was never big on boose. :o) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 09:37, 5 December 2009 (EST)
  • Support for January, it's actually quite good, not completely exhaustive, but good enough - and I'm all for the concept of featuring cities during major events. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 09:37, 5 December 2009 (EST)

December

Copenhagen (DOTM)

I know there are some gaps in the coverage, and the main article sort of needs a makeover, but seeing Vientiane has been smacked up for December, I thought I'd give a shout and propose Copenhagen for that month instead. In itself Copenhagen is actually a good place to visit during Christmas, with loads going on, even though the weather can be tricky.

And this year, the worlds eyes are going to be tuned towards my little city, with all the worlds leaders gathered here, for the renegotiation of the Kyoto treaty - basically going to be the Copenhagen Treaty I suppose. More than 10.000 NGO's, as well as swarms of journalists and other people who are likely to use wikivoyage as a medium are coming to town, So I'd really like to see wonderful Copenhagen smacked up on our front page during that month. And don't worry, even though progress is rather slow, I'm going to fill in the blanks, don't want my little jewel in the making looking like that, when the world is watching :)

--(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:02, 31 July 2009 (EDT)

It's too bad this one didn't have a good collaboration of the month however, I think it is nearly ready. The uneven coverage should be addressed before it is featured. From what I could see, Vestegnen needs descriptions under Drink and Sleep sections and the "district under construction" label has to go. Fredriksberg needs information in the "contact" section, since it's currently empty, and the hotel listings should be formatted properly with more descriptions. As something that I think should be addressed but is not so crucial to the DotM, the northern suburbs' shops should have descriptions and the "Paddling Down the Mollea River" box is too long. This would be a nice feature to break up the Southeast Asian destinations. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:22, 31 July 2009 (EDT)
  • I'd support once it's at guide status, although if the consensus is that the main article isn't ready, we could feature the recently-starred Copenhagen/Amager district instead. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 23:24, 31 July 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. The only thing preventing Copenhagen from having guide status is that noone has changed the usable tagall districts are usable already. It would be proper to fill out the history and literature sections of the main article first, but that's a very minor and easy thing to change. I've noticed that a DotM/OtBP main page feature sends google results for that article through the roof. Accordingly, with Copenhagen big in the news, we could get a lot of new traffic by featuring it in December. Moreover, Christmas in candle-happy Copenhagen would make for a lovely visit. And it's a great collection of articles for a great travel destination, making it a top-notch DotM nomination IMO. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:17, 1 August 2009 (EDT)
OK, so now is it good enough for y'all?
NEVER! Just kidding, Support! All concerns were addressed. The districts are now more evenly covered. A great article! I'm just going to go ahead a bump Vientiane, since there is no discussion about why it is best for December, and this one clearly has a reason for the season. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 16:57, 18 September 2009 (EDT)

Just to add, if you think November or December would be the best featured month, I'd support bumping the others down. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:07, 1 July 2009 (EDT)

Marrakech (DotM)

Thanks to Mr Yurkin I finally bumped into a worthy candidate outside North America and Asia - apart from the odd ones in Europe, they are extremely hard to come by! While there are a few flaws (like missing addresses) I really think the information there is so good and comprehensive, that we can turn our blind eye to these.

It's looking pretty good, needs some cleanup still though..... there's a lot of stuff that should be on the Morocco page rather than the city page, like the general hammam info, etc (WT-en) cacahuate talk 23:18, 13 May 2009 (EDT)
I've bumped it up it's definitely a guide-class article. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 22:31, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
  • Comment Great this lovely city got a nomination. I believe that ideal time for it to be featured is Aug or Sept when one can realistically start preparing a trip, with an intention to get there in November (which is indeed a good time for a visit). And, for the record, I don't think I've made any serious difference to the article: it grew organically by effort of many wikivoyagers. But I'm really happy this article received a nomination. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 17:24, 20 June 2009 (EDT)
    • I wonder what else can be (relatively easily) improved/fixed in the article before it shows up at the main page? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:14, 9 October 2009 (EDT)

Kilkenny (OtBP)

This article is very good and gives a good insight into the Medieval Capital of Ireland. Its small nature, I feel, qualifies it for Off the BEaten Track. As a resident of Kilkenny, I feel that it deserves the opportunity to be on this list.

The article contains many nice photos and detailed descriptions of Hotels and ways of getting in and, of course, things to to.

It is a guide article.

  • Close. There are a few edits that need to be done -- contact info and hours for restaurants, typo repair, ideally adding a map -- before I'd support it unequivocally, but all are doable. Let's keep an eye on this one to see how it develops; it's definitely a reasonable candidate. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:37, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
  • New information on eat has been added, with new maps and photographs.
Another map copyright issue on this one. Please respond at the wts:vfd page. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 10:47, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Gone.

  • Support. Great page. It has a thorough description of things to do and where to go. Great Photos.
  • I have been working on this article for a while now, and I think it could possibly be up to scratch. Maps have been added, comprehensive food, drink and accommodation listings are in place and good quality photos too. The structure might be a bit off, so I was wondering if anyone could give any suggestions as to where to go from here? --User:(WT-en) LikeThatWillHappen 00:47, 8 March 2009 (GMT)
The big missing thing appears to be a street map, which could be lifted from OpenStreetMap without too much effort (see Project:How to create a map). The Irish phrase don't belong in a small city, that's what the Irish phrasebook is for. Other than that, looks good to go what time of year is best? (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:47, 18 March 2009 (EDT)
  • Summer or Autumn. The weather is usually great in Kilkenny at those times, the hottest place in Ireland. It celebrated its 400th birthday today as a City, the 11th of April, and celebrations were widespread. They will be continuing for the coming months.
Most of the pictures are nice, but some of the pictures (like the lead photo) are rather washed out. Are there any that could be traded? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:41, 16 September 2009 (EDT)
The poor quality photos have been replaced with better quality ones and the leading photo, I feel, is much better now. Thanks very much for that. They were indeed rather washe out. (WT-en) LikeThatWillHappen 15:15, 19 September 2009 (GMT)
Support The new photos look great! (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 17:50, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Support Great article, I'd like a WT style map, but I think it meets the bar anyway. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:49, 30 September 2009 (EDT)

September

Birmingham (DotM)

Not a huge tourism destination (which is why it seems ok to go without districts), but one of England's biggest cities, and a major business hub. The article looks borderline perfect and the maps are jaw-dropping. Weather on this island is always rainy and a little chilly, and the main draws are nightlife, shopping, and proximity to nearby destinations, so it doesn't really matter when we feature it. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:23, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

  • Meh. The article is certainly well done, but the city is not very appealing. We could use this in a pinch, but I'd rather give precedence to more "interesting" destinations if suitable articles can be found. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:13, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
Couldn't have said it better myself! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:18, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. It is England's second-largest city, I think 3rd in UK behind Glasgow, not certain. Great Indian food, some nice pubs, ... Not big for tourism, but a convenient base for Stratford which is. If not DotM, could it be OtBP despite its size because it is not a big tourist area?
Lots of people go there to work, from everywhere. ("How do you recognise a Brummie? There's a shamrock in his turban.") Huge numbers of students, too. Birmingham is a major university, largest nursing school in UK, I think medical as well. Aston University is not small, either. (WT-en) Pashley 05:50, 11 November 2008 (EST)
Support - it's an amazing article and does have touristic draws. Not Peter and Bill, this isn't Tokyo or Hong Kong, maybe not even Seattle, but it deserves it because it has pretty good touristic stuff to do with it's size. It's very well written and a lot of work has gone into it. This could make the city more popular! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 17:38, 16 November 2008 (EST).
  • Support. Excellent article - great find by Peter, and credit to the folks who worked on it. OtBP isn't a bad idea if its touristic charms aren't well known (they weren't to me), although I'm OK with a DotM as well.. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:56, 8 December 2008 (EST)
  • Objections Someone needs to pick up a yellow pages, or get going with google, and complete the adresses (I don't know, I have a feeling I may demand star quality sometimes) - At the very least, the drink section should be fixed up - this is England for heavens sake! :o) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:09, 8 December 2008 (EST)
What addresses? From what I saw - everything was full. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:59, 19 December 2008 (EST).
  • Support. Not the prettiest town I've ever visited, but does appear to have a lot of business people staying. I also believe the the national convention center is located there. (WT-en) WindHorse 22:30, 24 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Isn't it better as a Off the beaten track destination? (WT-en) Globe-trotter 02:26, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
As the second largest city in the UK? I think that would be pushing it. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 03:37, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
Sure it's a gigantic city, but it is not a major tourist destination. I thought OTBP has to do with how many tourists go there, instead of how big a city has to be. Novosibirsk is larger, and I think it'd also count as a OTBP. (WT-en) Globe-trotter 05:16, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
First google search result for tourist numbers says 22 million visitors a year... --(WT-en) inas 07:06, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

Has a couple of very interesting attractions and some small-town, away-from-the-interstate charm. Might be too small to be featured, but it's a nice weekend trip. Could work for December (there are Christmas festivities in town, and the House on the Rock supposedly goes all out for Christmas), otherwise a warm weather month. The major article for the region, Madison, is in reasonably good shape. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:38, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

Not yet - I don't know if being too small is a problem - we've had Berneray as OtBP and that article covers 10 sq km and has just 128 residents. However there are a few problems - we need a few more things to do listed either in See/Do or the Get Out section, a bit more info in the get in section (e.g. nearest airport) and some more info about the town as a whole. I also like to read about places before I visit, so some general pre-visit info and history about the town would be nice. Also there needs to be more details about the hiking trails and canoe trips. If we get this to a reasonable standard, then maybe it would be a good candidate for when the American Playhouse Theatre does their annual outdoor Shakespeare festival? -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 09:06, 15 August 2007 (EDT)
Support. I don't see anything wrong with the article? It seems to have something in all the main sections, and just being small isn't really a problem for OtBP. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:30, 15 February 2008 (EST)
Support -- reluctantly. I had an experience very close to this town that makes it difficult for me to recommend any site in southwestern Wisconsin for visits. However, that was probably an isolated case, the article is well done, and House-on-the-Rock is just weird enough to be good OtBP fodder, so I'll lay aside my personal distaste for the area and say yes. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:16, 21 June 2008 (EDT)
Support. Spring Green makes for a fantastic OtbP in my estimation. It should definitely be featured May October, since the tours of the Taliesin Estate only run during those months. The article could use a little polishing, but I think that will probably happen before next May. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:45, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
Are we going to feature this one next? I think it's better to take this a month later, to get some geographic variety (we already have the United States now). (WT-en) Globe-trotter 14:49, 28 August 2009 (EDT)
The Taliesin Estate closes at the end of October, and the American Playhouse ends its season on October 18. OtBPs are changed on the 15th. So if this article were pushed back a month, two of the three major attractions would be closed for half the time the article was being featured (until November 15). Geographic diversity matters, but I think it's better handled in a broad sense, rather than micro-managed on a month-to-month basis. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 17:50, 28 August 2009 (EDT)

August

Okayama (DotM)

It's an interesting and easily accessible destination that many travellers to Japan seem to skip over. As a grossly underrated destination, it would be nice to see it featured. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 58.191.155.98 (talkcontribs)

  • Don't Support. Articles must be guide status or better... and this one is quite far off, eat and sleep sections are sparse and disorganized, for a start :) (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:08, 17 February 2009 (EST)
Update: I support now, it's been greatly improved! Would still love to see more hotel descriptions, but this article is looking great  :) (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:12, 18 July 2009 (EDT)
  • If people skip over it, perhaps this would be better in the "off the beaten path" section. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus (talkcontribs)
    • While not super-popular, it's a large city on the bullet train trunk line and a fairly common stopover along the way to Hiroshima, so it's more DotM than OtBP in my book. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:15, 19 February 2009 (EST)
      • I want to get this article to guide status, and I've been working on it little by little, but are there any areas aside from the "Eat" section that are not up to par? Also, what is the best way to search for dining places and giving good tips without actually having visited them? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:27, 24 February 2009 (EST)
  • Almost Support. The article is much better than it used to be, I think only "Eat" still needs serious help. Also, there are so many redlinks to Soja that the city should be created, at least as a stub. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:44, 24 April 2009 (EDT)
I've updated the "Eat" section (trimmed down much of the text, split into categories, added more listings) and added a Soja page with some information. Do you see anything else that needs done (or anything more on that section)? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 10:36, 14 May 2009 (EDT)
Looking good! I cleaned it up a little more. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:53, 14 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Almost support. Were it an OtBP nomination, it would already be there, but I'd like to see that eat section spruced up a bit more. It's pretty short for a city of this size, but more importantly the majority of the listings lack descriptions. Great article, though, and that's not much work left before becoming a DotM! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:14, 14 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Support. Could this be featured in August? The Edmonton article is unstable right now, and August would give a month's separation from the next Japan DoTM in September. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 16:21, 23 May 2009 (EDT)
I was also thinking August, since the Momotaro Festival is held then, and the garden is still green and pristine. Anytime from May to September would work, though. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 11:23, 24 May 2009 (EDT)
I really don't get how the Edmonton article is unstable. If you could, please do explain that{not in this section tho}. Regardless I asked many months in advance to have Edmonton in the summer months, and August would be best, cause the biggest festivals and what not are then, and the city is it's most vibrant. I do think July or September would be ok. Does Birmingham have to be in September, or could it be moved to October, for example? (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 17:03, 24 May 2009 (EDT).

Written single-handedly by User:(WT-en) WineCountryInn, presumably of , but this is almost a textbook example of how to sell yourself correctly on Wikivoyage. It's a little hype-y and some of the purplest prose ("adult adventure of the senses"?!) needs trimming, but hey, this is an itinerary for wine lovers and it's OK to be enthusiastic. Anytime between April and September should be fine. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:37, 8 January 2009 (EST)

The article is excellent so far, but at least a few of the vineyards should have descriptions highlighting what makes them notable or exceptional, preferably with more contact info than the website. If they're all equal and it doesn't matter which one you visit (because you're sure to have a great time anywhere you go in Colorado Wine Country), then that should be noted instead. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 23:42, 8 January 2009 (EST)
Hmm, good point. The vineyards are also (mostly?) listed in the town articles, so it's probably best to put detailed descriptions in those and just point out the top few picks in the itinerary. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:48, 9 January 2009 (EST)
In addition to the above, of all the "wine regions" listed, only two have much information on wine in that region...three are stubs ("X" is a city in Colorado). I think al of the "wine regions" should be usable (including wine info) before this is featured).(WT-en) AHeneen 05:02, 9 January 2009 (EST)
My concerns are pretty much gone after the impressive work that's been done by User:(WT-en) WineCountryInn today. It's already a great article, and if he or she keeps working at this rate, it'll wind up a star. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:06, 9 January 2009 (EST)
Is this guide correctly labeled as a travel topic? I went off the example of Skiing in Colorado. Is it more correctly a Region or an Itinerary? It encompasses more than a single region, both Northwestern Colorado and Southwestern Colorado. It is about a specific topic, apropos the Chicago Skyline Guide? Any thoughts about this? (WT-en) WineCountryInn 18:41, 11 January 2009 (EST)
I think you're right to call it a travel topic. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 18:45, 11 January 2009 (EST)
  • Support This is really good stuff, only thing i'd like to see changed, is a bit more comprehensive descriptions of the wineries, but I think it's already up to OTBP standard as far as i'm concerned. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 19:29, 11 January 2009 (EST)
I have removed the problematic "wine regions", a concern voiced by (WT-en) AHeneen, and added descriptions to all the wineries, as requested by many different users. (WT-en) WineCountryInn 22:39, 13 January 2009 (EST)
Rotation for the article. With the August picks coming up for OtBP, I'd like to suggest this piece for either August or September, when the grape harvest is coming in. Thanks.(WT-en) WineCountryInn 00:02, 23 January 2009 (EST)
  • Support. I'm really excited about this OtBPit's a great article, and a unique feature for the main page. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:15, 17 July 2009 (EDT)

  • Looks like a good article, I'd Support, but I think it should be more an OTBP. Most of the OTBP are rural areas, how about a small city like this? It isn't overly known, really. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 17:13, 22 May 2009 (EDT).

Odense (OtBP)

Nicely turned out article on a small city in Denmark with some attractions. I'm not sure there really are "Off the Beaten Path" locales in western Europe, but this one seems to qualify, and we're probably overdue for an OtBP there. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 16:02, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

Support. Some listings could use more detail, but overall it seems to cover the destination well. Good OtBP candidate. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:42, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
Support. I presume summer is best? (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:30, 15 February 2008 (EST)

Support. Looks ok. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:52, 19 December 2008 (EST).

If this is really going to be featured, it would be nice to see a bit more information in some of the listings... and I hate to say it but that map is a real eyesore. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:18, 18 June 2009 (EDT)
You are not complaining about the pretty WT styled city map are you? ;o) - I'll see what I can do filling in some more content, but the only things I've seen of the city is basically the train station, the highway, my old company's office and the nearby conference hotel - so my knowledge is pretty limited. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 07:17, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
Was there a different map there before? After looking at the page, I have no idea what my comment was about... The map looks fine. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 21:18, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
You were probably talking about this one, which was there before. And, yes, Stefan's map is excellent! (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:36, 5 July 2009 (EDT)

June

Vladimir (DotM)

(WT-en) Alexander has done an incredible job with this article, and I think it's easily up to our dotm standards. I'm nominating it as a dotm, because it is one of the main stops on the very popular Golden Ring circuit in Russia. But I think it's a borderline case that could be featured as either a dotm or otbpwhichever is in greater demand. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:18, 17 February 2009 (EST)

  • Support — Seems rather complete and it's a UNESCO heritage site. Given the unclear support for Boracay, Birmingham, & Reykjavik plus the fact Uluru was nominated for OtBP...I'd say this could be fit in as an DotM sometime in the summer (between May-August). My only complaint would be that Bogolyubovo in the "Get out" should be removed and put in a separate article. (WT-en) AHeneen 22:45, 17 February 2009 (EST)
We discussed on the Russian version whether Bogolyubovo should get its own article and decided pro. So Alexander will probably take care of that on the English version as well long before this would be featured. I'd widen the featuring window to MayOctoberFall is definitely my favorite time to travel in this area, not yet cold and far less crowded (which also means less touts and other assorted rogues). --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:07, 18 February 2009 (EST)
Bogolyubovo has now been spun out into its own article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:32, 24 February 2009 (EST)
I am not eligible to vote here, I guess. So, just a short comment on the season. In my opinion, the best time for travelling in Central Russia is late spring (May) or mid-autumn (end of September, October Indian summer). (WT-en) Atsirlin 03:15, 24 February 2009 (EST)
  • Support, but: I suspect this may be better as OtBP. The Golden Ring is rather overshadowed by Moscow and St. Petersburg, at least to most English-speaking travelers, and treating this article as OtBP would be a good way to introduce it, while having it as DotM may leave most readers (at least most readers of an English-language wiki) saying "Huh?". Either way, the article is excellent, and Alexander, your "vote" counts for just as much as anyone else's! -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:05, 24 February 2009 (EST)
Sure it's overshadowed by Moscow/St.Petersburg, but the Golden Ring is probably about third after those two in terms of foreign tourists. While it is still little known, I gave my reasons as to why it should be DotM and otherwise, OtBP nominations are a bit full plus Yakutsk was a recent OtBP and I hope to get Kamchatka up to OtBP-quality soon...making 3 Russian OtBP in, let's say, 12 months. As Peter said in nominating, it could be either, but DotM seems like the best place it can fit. (WT-en) AHeneen 19:51, 24 February 2009 (EST)
Yakutsk, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Vladimir, Olkhon - we're going be in darn good shape for Russia, when I also finish my Russian side kicks :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:06, 24 February 2009 (EST)
Foreign English-speaking tourists? What's "on the beaten path" for a Russian or Eastern European may not be for the majority of users of the English-language version of Wikivoyage. (And vice versa; I've had some misgivings about some things we've called DotMs on the grounds that, if you're not a resident of an English-speaking country, they're quite definitely off the beaten path.) However, I don't feel strongly about calling it OtBP; the article is good enough that we should feature it somewhere. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:16, 24 February 2009 (EST)
Well, like I said, I think it could go either way. But the path here is very well-beaten, and I don't mean in terms of domestic tourismendless boatloads and busloads of foreign tourists come here, as the Golden Ring circuit (at least parts of it) is included in virtually all "tour Russia packages" for Westerners. Of the sizable cities on the route, I believe that Vladimir is the most visited, since it's easy to combine it with a visit to ever popular Suzdal. Personally, I'd want to avoid coming here during the summer monthsin addition to the humidity, I'd worry that my "Russian" experience would turn into a joust for camera space with some hungover Finns, a group of loud Italian women, and a septuagenarian couple from the Detroit suburbs. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:07, 25 February 2009 (EST)
That's interesting, When I was in Suzdal in May, which I suppose is the top attraction, we basically had the place to ourselves - well everything was booked up, but it was all Russians. You know Russia better than me, but judging from the tourist facilities in Vladimir, I'd personally be surprised if I bumped into anyone from States. But then again, it might be because we were travelling independently, and it was out of season. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:22, 25 February 2009 (EST)

May

I've worked a lot on this article the past couple of days and think its up to OtBP standards. I'm not sure if the template is correct, as it started with a city template and I tried to turn it into an itinerary. As a disclaimer, I was the one to put the "guide" label on the article...but it as come a long way from the outline it started as. It has a few possible MoS violations which I feel can be justified. Please read this list and their justifications on Talk:Dalton Highway before posting your comment here. I think the article would be a great around March-June as the highway is best to travel in July-August. --(WT-en) AHeneen 03:05, 28 November 2008 (EST)

First nominated as: Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It's always good to feature more articles on Oz, and this one does a fine job with a famously out-of-the-way feature, describing some of the other stuff in the vicinity besides Uluru itself. January/February? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:57, 24 July 2008 (EDT)

  • Support. However, the article suggest that Dec-Jan is brutal, and July-Sep is the best time to go. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:05, 24 August 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. Great to see that the nearby town is also a nice article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:19, 11 November 2008 (EST)
  • Support. July-Sept timeframe is good, although anytime other than Nov-Mar is probably fine. I was there in late Oct and the heat was tolerable, although starting to get very warm by mid-day (mid 30s). (WT-en) Shaund 01:02, 20 November 2008 (EST)
  • Oppose. 5 star accommodation, tours galore, more coaches with occupants sipping champagne next to them than you can poke a stick at, in massive carparks. Major airport a few kilometres away, with shuttle buses linking the choices of swimming pools, bars and restaurants. On the travel route of most coach tours, retirees, and backpackers. Hard to see what beaten track this is off --(WT-en) Inas 23:15, 3 December 2008 (EST)
That's a valid reason to propose moving this to DotM, but it's not a valid reason to oppose the nomination itself. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:48, 9 December 2008 (EST)
Prooably true, however it wouldn'r feel right to me to move people's opinions from off the beaten track to DotM. The opinions expressed may be different. If anyone thinks it should still be a DotM it is easy enough for them to move it upwards, and restart a discussion there, and avoid any possibility that people don't know what they are supporting. --(WT-en) Inas 16:16, 9 December 2008 (EST)
  • Almost Support It isn't a bad article at first glance, but I think it should be a bit longer before being featured. The "flora/fauna", "climate", "see", & "do" sections need to be lengthened/elaborated. Furthermore, I agree with Inas that this is a MAJOR destination. I'd fathom a guess that a third to half of all tourists to Australia visit Uluru. This should most certainly be a DotM. It would be nice to feature this in May (when it's a bit cooler Down Under) (WT-en) AHeneen 04:58, 1 February 2009 (EST)

One suggestion: feature Australia's Northern Territory instead as a DotM (Uluru is in the Northern Territory). I believe it is Wikivoyage's first true guide-level region article, and all the linked destinations, including Uluru, are well developed, with maps. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:40, 25 February 2009 (EST)

  • Support! That's a pretty impressive region. (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:10, 25 February 2009 (EST)
  • Support But, are regions able to be featured based on the guidelines? Isn't this like Indiana, which is specifically stated as being not allowed? Doesn't it need to be a city or National Park? Did this change? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 10:21, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Good point. I've brought this up on the talk page. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:27, 25 February 2009 (EST)

There's only 10 days until the next DotM change...should we change it to Northern Teritory? (WT-en) AHeneen 18:22, 20 April 2009 (EDT)

That sounds right to me. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:24, 20 April 2009 (EDT)

April

Boracay (DotM)

The Philippines is comprise of 7,100 and more islands yet none of these had been nominated at least once since 2004 compared to other countries in Southeast Asia (maybe due to lack of promotion or perhaps unnoticed). This country has lots to offer: one of them is the white-sand beach Boracay. I nominate the destination (not because it is one of the few good travel guides here for the Philippines) to be featured on April 2008 because the country is on its hottest summer on that month and is ideal for beach-lovers. (WT-en) Alas 18:59, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

Contentwise the article is good, but the style needs work. Restaurants and hotels should be split into Budget/Mid-range/Splurge, and many if not most of the entries need formatting. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:39, 3 November 2007 (EDT)
  • I'd already nominated this for OtBP (below) but would support it for DotM once the tidying that Jani recommends is done. I'll have a go. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:37, 1 January 2008 (EST)

Fascinating article that almost suffers from a TMI problem. There's a lot of stuff here that it would be hard to find in a dead-trees travel guide. Question for discussion: is this place OtBP or DotM? Either way, it looks interesting (in a touristy sort of way...). -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:34, 27 October 2007 (EDT)

Is this a place where addresses don't matter? It has plenty of listings and descriptions but not much in the way of where places are. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:37, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
Boracay is one of the Phils' top tourist draws, so I think DotM would be more appropriate. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:26, 15 February 2008 (EST)

So it this ready for February, anyone's input on the address situation? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:34, 31 December 2008 (EST)

bump again, is this ready to be tomorrows OTPB? /edit argh mixed up with DOTM, we still need to sort this out though' --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:00, 14 January 2009 (EST)
Man, this is close, but not quite there yet. The addresses aren't a problem IMHO, they're nonexistent/useless in all Southeast Asian beaches, but the formatting and the lack of a budget/mid-range/splurge split are. The anonymous guy tending the article also has some quirky ideas about extlinks... (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:29, 15 January 2009 (EST)
  • Almost support. It is close, but agree that style still needs some work. Needs a good copyedit, sleep and eat need price subdivisions, and if someone has time it would be nice to wt-ify the map and see if listings can't be placed (WT-en) cacahuate talk 10:48, 20 January 2009 (EST)
    • I can try to work on the map when I get some time, hopefully in the next day or two. I'm also not seeing any breadcrumbs on this article; is that just me? (WT-en) LtPowers 18:18, 20 January 2009 (EST)
I see the breadcrumbs...  :) (WT-en) cacahuate talk 20:41, 20 January 2009 (EST)
Support for March 2009, the article is in good shape and i dare to add it in the list with a qustion mark(WT-en) jan 05:31, 25 January 2009 (EST)
  • Note: I've not had any luck finding a high-enough resolution source from which to make a Wikivoyage-style map. Even if I did, there are an awful lot of hotels and restaurants, and don't have a good way of pinpointing them on said map. Any suggestions are welcome. (WT-en) LtPowers 17:00, 31 January 2009 (EST)
What about just wtify-ing this one? Can't help with listing placement though (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:13, 1 February 2009 (EST)
I could, but the result would be necessarily less detailed than the original. Unless you just mean changing the colors to match our guidelines. (WT-en) LtPowers 08:50, 4 February 2009 (EST)
If you have the time and inclination some more detailed maps are here & here , while I suspect they official maps from the local tourist agency (which means public domain by Philippine law) I haven't been able to verify this - could use them for placement though, but that's a lot of work, though the end result would probably make us the best guide for the island, there is also a guidebook looking one here  :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 16:08, 16 March 2009 (EDT)
Did a superquick openstreetmap.org import of Boracay (Image:Boracay.svg) which had surprisingly good coverage, if you want to work with this - I'm sick of maps at the moment after doing a great deal of work on Copenhagen map imports. You can only select elements with the "Edit paths by nodes" tool, and text is imported as paths, but otherwise it works just as a regular svg. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 16:55, 16 March 2009 (EDT)

We've got <1 month until the next DotM change. Boracay has been nominated for the next DotM. Is it or is it not ready? If not, what will we do for March? One thing I might note is that we'd have 2 tropical islands in the Pacific featured for the first half of the month (along with Wake Island as OtBP, which in turn replaces an article for a tropical island). If there is any other article that could work for March, I think this should get bumped a month or two. Uluru isn't bad (although nominated for OtBP, but see discussion below). (WT-en) AHeneen 20:10, 3 February 2009 (EST)

March

Basel (DotM)

Influential port city on arguably the most important river in Europe, the Rhine. Stands at the intersection of three nations (Switzerland, Germany, and France) and serves as a cultural center for the region. Great jumping off point for diverse surrounding area. Currently has a very useful "Guide" article that I found especially useful when planning my trip there in 2007. Great city anytime in the year. --AZGSB9 17:46, 09 October 2008 (EST)

  • Support. My review was perfunctory, but at first glance it looks like it's up to snuff. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:22, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
Support. I like this article a lot. It's generally weak on prices and admission fees, though. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:38, 8 December 2008 (EST)

February

This should be separated from San Diego, to avoid an overload of California sans destinations. But I think it's already up to DotM status, and is improving exponentially. I'd certainly understand, though, if Asterix & John want to wait to feature it until they've finished what they set out to do. I'm guessing winter would be a nice time to feature this one. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:52, 17 August 2008 (EDT)

  • Support, but not until some time in '09. This complex of articles is prime DotM material already. I'd personally suggest spring rather than winter, but in any event, not before February, just to spread Lotus Land out a little. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 15:28, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. It's a good article for Spring '09. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 18:37, 5 November 2008 (EST).
I'd suggest April or May 2009. Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee talk 18:05, 16 November 2008 (EST).
  • Support. I hear spring is a lovely time to go to SF...which is when I went, now that I think about it. I can't wait to see the Golden Gate Bridge on Wikivoyage's front page. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 17:26, 18 November 2008 (EST)
    • It is a good time, but I'd suggest looking for something else to insert between it and DW. Having two US DotMs in a row should be avoided if feasible. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:09, 19 November 2008 (EST)
      • Sounds good - how about May? That would still work just fine. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 13:12, 19 November 2008 (EST)
Put in April - good enough. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 13:50, 19 November 2008 (EST).
We have an unspoken rule around here that we try to avoid putting a bunch of destinations from the same country/continent all together in a row, one after the other; instead we try to spread it around a bit, to make things fair. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 15:40, 19 November 2008 (EST)
What's that supposed to mean? Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 15:56, 19 November 2008 (EST).
Well, let's say you nominated Edmonton and you wanted it for say August, and you nominated, oh say Ontario, and you wanted that for September. Then you nominated Montreal for October, Toronto for November, etc. That would be several months of nothing but Canadian destinations highlighted on our front page, which wouldn't really be fair to other places in the world who we want for a shot at DotM. So we try to spread things around, and avoid having too many places from the same country come one after the other. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 16:05, 19 November 2008 (EST)
Yeah, I kind of know that, man. But, if you are directing the thought that I am doing too many nominations to a specific area, please don't discuss it here, leave me a note in my talk and we can discuss it, ok? Thank you love! Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 16:11, 19 November 2008 (EST).

Wow, this is a gem!! well written, covering just about everything and indisputably of the beaten path, and it even has a map. I know there is a tiny little but in that fact you can't get there - at all - but we're short in destinations for the winter months, and this article really showcases the strength of wikivoyage. (WT-en) Sertmann 20:24, 5 November 2008 (EST)

  • Support. I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been featured beforeI sort of assumed it had been. The fact that it links to a site actually offering job positions is awesome. If I were a computer technician... --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:01, 8 November 2008 (EST)
  • Support, but lukewarm. It's certainly a high-quality article, no doubt about that, and it does show what this project can do with such an out-of-the-way place. However, I'd prefer to give priority to actual destinations, and use this one only as a last resort -- fittingly enough, considering how the "traveler" is most likely to wind up there... -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:49, 10 November 2008 (EST)
  • Support. OtBPs are all about insufferably obscure places (cf. Pitcairn). What matters is that the article is good, and this one is. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:16, 11 November 2008 (EST)
He, I'm actually scheming on going to Pitcairn :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 00:09, 31 December 2008 (EST)
  • Not sure I agree with Bill-on-the-Hill in that we should give priority to destinations which can actually be reached. The text of the article suggests that you need a private aircraft and a permit "which will probably be denied" to get onto the island. It is a good article, no doubt, but only if there is nothing better. (WT-en) AHeneen 22:49, 3 December 2008 (EST)
  • Support. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:06, 8 December 2008 (EST).
  • Almost support. My only concerns are the phone numbers plunked awkwardly at the end of the various sections. It's not entirely clear what you'd be using that phone number to do, who you'd be talking to, or what you should say to them. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:27, 8 December 2008 (EST)
  • Changed my opinion - the problem I see with this place is that it isn't open to the general public. While I am fine it being an article - do we really want a Destination for a whole month on something most people will never be allowed to go to? (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:51, 19 December 2008 (EST).
    • We've previously debated whether places closed to the general public are article-worthy at all, and the conclusion was yes, as they're still places, after all. So I don't see why it could not be an OtBP as well. 01:22, 22 December 2008 (EST)
  • Don't support! It's HUGE leap from being article worthy to being featured on the front page. Surely we can find a destination instead that you can actually visit? This is a travel guide, and putting a destination that you can't visit on the front page and saying, "hey if you want to get otbp go here", is more than a little strange (WT-en) cacahuate talk 19:31, 15 January 2009 (EST)
Not stubborn about this at all, although I support it, and I didn't put it up on the schedule, but Nako is a bit much the month after Saint Martin, Saba which has outstanding objections, and listings without any info and lack addresses everywhere, which leaves us with, hmmm Putrajaya this time of year. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:01, 15 January 2009 (EST)
  • Support --but with a caveat. There is nothing more off the beaten path geographically than an island. Eight out of 32 OtBPs feature islands, so far. Do you want to run two islands in a row, with more islands and archipelagoes slated in the not too distant future? Should there be geographical rotation as well as country location, for variety's sake? (as long as the article is up to snuff). Just to spur future articles, how about other kinds of islands, such as ecological (some spots in the Amazon or, say, a unique cave system in a national park) or anthropological, such as an ethnic minority seperated by geography and culture? (perhaps Ainu or the Basques?) Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park fits that description nicely. (WT-en) WineCountryInn 20:05, 15 January 2009 (EST)
  • Support. I think that this is exactly the sort of article we want to highlight at Wikivoyage - what other travel guide would include information on such a remote, difficult-to-visit place? The article itself is well-done and interesting, and the destination is the kind of place that might inspire someone to try to find a way to visit. Wikivoyage is unique for having articles on these sorts of destinations, and I think we should show these articles off whenever we can. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 23:20, 15 January 2009 (EST)
Oh my lordy lordy, have any of you read the get in section? ...the atoll is no longer generally open to visitors. The airstrip remains available as an emergency landing site for trans-Pacific flights; if you don't have official business there, that's perhaps the most likely circumstance in which you'll visit the place. In non-emergency situations, a "Prior Permission Request" must be filed to use the airstrip (and will probably be denied). So, we're featuring a place that you can't go to unless your plane gets a bird in both engines mid-flight and needs to make an emergency landing? That's all we can come up with for Feb??? Am I missing something else? Or does the section need an update? How about #Tobacco Caye instead? You can visit it, legally, and without crash landing, I swear, I just did it two weeks ago (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:11, 16 January 2009 (EST)
Yes, we have, and it says that there are military and civilian contractors actually working on the island. Also, according to the current DOTM guidelines, difficulty of access is not a criterion (see also Talk). (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:15, 17 January 2009 (EST)
"Difficult", even "ridiculously difficult" is not the same as "impossible". Besides, DotM/OtBP are not just used for people considering actual trips, but for people who just like to read about unusual places. I'm not likely to ever go to Japan, but I enjoyed reading our Japan article, for instance. (WT-en) LtPowers 10:29, 17 January 2009 (EST)
Then so it shall be (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:31, 18 January 2009 (EST)

January

Phnom Penh (DotM)

Would be nice to have a cope section, for a notoriously wearing travel destination, but otherwise the article looks great. It's the destination, where you will undoubtedly wind up, in Cambodia, and a great place to try out machine guns & rocket propelled grenades on the cheap. The obvious "get out" destination is Angkor, and that's a previous DotM in its own right. Dry season is November-March, so that's the time to feature it. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:23, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

  • Support. Map would be nice, but the rest is very good. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:01, 24 August 2008 (EDT)

December

Harbin (DotM)

The growth of this article has been just stellar lately, and it also gets extra brownie points for being a good cold winter destination: the Harbin Ice Festival, held every January, is a major tourism draw. Some formatting nits remain, but User:(WT-en) Rogerhc has been doing a great job whipping this into shape. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:22, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

  • Almost, but not quite. There are still a number of grammar goofs, and any chance of getting a map up? Fix these and I'll support, unequivocally. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:14, 12 June 2007 (EDT)
    • My concerns have been addressed (apart from the map, which would still be nice but we can do without it), so support. January? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 17:02, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Almost support. I took a pass at cleaning it up, but it'll need more. It's remarkably comprehensive, but needs hours/prices/locations for the See section. Also, the Russian architectural influence is mentioned in passing, but it's several paragraphs into the article before we hear anything nice about the place (the summer climate). (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 11:19, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
Agree with above comments. It is near the top and just needs a little extra effort to get it onto the peak. Will nominate for COtW. (WT-en) WindHorse 12:12, 14 June 2007 (EDT)

One thing, I am wondering why this is nominated for next month? Have everything that has made people say almost etc. been ressolved? Just wondering. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:23, 20 November 2008 (EST).

Exactly, why is it listed for Dec? Also, Harbin will host the 2009 Winter Universiade (Olympic-like sports events for universities around the world) Feb 18-28. So how 'bout featuring Harbin in Feb (assuming we will address the issues). (WT-en) AHeneen 07:26, 26 November 2008 (EST)
Like the nomination says, Harbin's top draw the Ice Festival is in January, so December is a good time to feature it. Are there any outstanding issues? (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:27, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Change it quick. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 10:34, 26 November 2008 (EST).

November

Riyadh (DotM)

Probably the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide out there on a famously "closed" city. Mentally OtBP, but physically DotM-sized, so I'll pip for DotM. Summer in Saudi is brutal, but anything between Oct-Apr or so should be fine. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:04, 8 May 2008 (EDT)

  • I think this is clearly better for OtBP than DotM. We've treated Dalian in OtBP rather than DotM and criticized Baku (also a significant business-travel city) as DotM, and they too have populations in the millions. Raw size is not the key determinant of DotM/OtBP; I thought we'd established that already. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:58, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
  • Yes, but I'm not pipping Riyadh as DoTM on size alone. Sure, it's not a tourist destination, but as the capital of the largest and wealthiest state in the Middle East it's a very important business destination that also hosts a sizable expat community, not to mention several million foreign workers. FWIW, I think Baku is also a DotM (c'mon, if you've got direct flights from Heathrow and Frankfurt...), and these days I'd probably put Dalian as DotM as well. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:35, 9 May 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. I could see it going for either dotm or otbp, though the latter is a bit western-centric (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:52, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

Another Caribbean OtBP suggestion with a very solid and properly formatted article. The only thing missing at all would be a map, and I'd be happy to take a stab at one if we do decide to feature this article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:55, 20 May 2008 (EDT)

  • Support, if you can get that map done. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:06, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. Looks good to me. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 08:30, 20 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. I'm feeling done with the article for now, it's got a shiny map, and (WT-en) Roger was kind enough to go over it and make sure everything is accurate. AFAIK it's gorgeous year-round, so I say feature it whenever we need to fill a slot. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:59, 22 June 2008 (EDT)

October

San Diego (DotM)

While we've been dithering over some frankly marginal DotMs, this one has been quietly turned into one of the very best huge-city compilations of articles that we have, and it covers an unusually attractive city for the visitor. It's long overdue to be featured. Unlike many US cities, it "works" as a DotM practically year-round; October/November, maybe? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:05, 20 June 2008 (EDT)

  • Support. Amazing article, and there's a great photo too. Three cheers to PerryPlanet for putting in the elbow grease for this! (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:23, 21 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Support. What was once an over-districtified nightmare has gotten a nice makeover and is looking much much nicer... good work planet perry (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:38, 21 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Ah, shucks. I supposed I'm biased, but I'll Support. Hopefully, being the DotM will bring some more much-needed attention to the San Diego articles, cause there's still a whole lot more to do before these guides become truly fantastic. (WT-en) PerryPlanet 13:13, 22 June 2008 (EDT)

I'm not even going to pretend to be partial about this: this is and continues to be one of my favorite articles, and it's pretty OTBP. Best anytime in spring (Mach-June) or fall (Sep-Nov). (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:49, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

  • Support. Put it in April and let travelers hitchhike south to north with the cherry blossoms. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:37, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
  • Support, but remember that an "April" OtBP doesn't start until April 15. I suspect it'd be better in March, for exactly Marc's reason. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 22:15, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Just wanted to get my support in on this onealong with the Japan article, this was the first Wikivoyage article I read! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:08, 19 June 2008 (EDT)

September

Ottawa (DoTM)

Attractive capital of an important country, with a well-composed and -illustrated article. It would be better if the map reflected the geography of the city rather than the mass transit system, but at least it has a map. May, maybe? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:33, 22 December 2007 (EST)

Support. Definitely not a winter destination, but September should stil be bearable, or it can be pushed earlier in summer? (Eg. Bandung is good any time of year.) Still needs a few MoS tweaks, but it's pretty good as it is. A nice new OSM map wouldn't hurt though... (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:32, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
Support. It can be a winter destination and has a "Winterlude" festival similar to Quebec or Harbin. However, the best times to go would be either the Tulip Festival in spring or the autumn when leaves are changing. (WT-en) Pashley 19:46, 29 May 2008 (EDT)

Do not Support It can be a winter destination, true, so I would rather give space for summer-mostly destination.

Jakar (OtBP)

A small village in the mountains of Bhutan. Accessible by road - one full day from the capital Thimphu and two days from the border. There are no addresses in Bhutan, so hotels are just listed by name. Jakar is a summer only destination, and is being offered as an alternative to Windsor (Ontario) as there has been some reservations about featuring this border town. If people prefer to feature Windsor, then this can be slushed until a future summer. I'll add climate info over the next few days. (WT-en) WindHorse 02:50, 17 June 2007 (EDT)

Don't support. Many sections of the article are still too skeletony: there are no real restaurant listings, and the hotel listings are rudimentary. (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:02, 17 June 2007 (EDT)
There aren't any real restaurants or cafes except for those in the hotels. It is a very small village with just one main street. In addition, tours to Bhutan can only be booked through a travel agency, and so guests have no/little say in which hotel they will stay. For them, accommodation is just in an international standard hotel. The important thing for Bhutan is info on attractions. Anyway, I am just pointing out the differences in defining articles for Bhutan than other countries, but agree that the current lack of info about hotels and restaurants/cafes may not look good on an article being show cased on the front page. I'll give it some thought... Anyway, we still need to think of an alternative for Windsor if that is the way consensus flows. I'll nominate Thimphu (later withdrawn), but I think we may run into the same difficulty. 'Drink' is empty, but I can add a few listings. (WT-en) WindHorse 03:13, 17 June 2007 (EDT)
OK, I'll withdraw my objection. Still needs a little cleanup though (eg. removing unused headers). (WT-en) Jpatokal 14:37, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
Up-dated and added info. Jakar is a suitable candidate for any slot from May to October. (WT-en) WindHorse 22:24, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
Support. Nicely written article and seems a good candidate for the vacant September slot - also a first for this Himalayan kingdom. (WT-en) Frequenttrekker 10:18, 3 April 2008 (EDT)

August

Bandung (DotM)

Good article. It provides a detail information of the city. Bandung is famous for its beautiful scenery with mountains surrounding the city, nice foods and the cool weather throughout the year. It is definitely one of the great destination for traveller. --(WT-en) Hkurniawan 07:30, 18 March 2008 (EDT).

Support. Excellent maps too. The article's English needs a little polishing (much of it was written by a non-native speaker), but it's pretty close to a star if you ask me. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:48, 18 March 2008 (EDT)
Support. Brilliant article in a region not ofter featured. --(WT-en) Nick 07:57, 18 March 2008 (EDT)
Support. This article may be a little too detail. Perhaps better with some additional pictures. --(WT-en) DanielK 07:57, 20 March 2008 (EDT)
Support. Fantastic article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:17, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Support. A very comprehensive article. (WT-en) Frequenttrekker 10:23, 3 April 2008 (EDT)
Marginally Oppose, for the time being. The article's strengths are obvious and I agree with the analysis above. However, there are some down sides. Demographically, Bandung qualifies as a "huge city," and the structure of the article is such as to suggest districtifying as is done for other huge cities. It also has a number of MoS issues, particularly in the "Eat" section. I'd rather see it put into the preferred format before it's used; the content is good enough that I'd support it once that's done. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 10:04, 8 May 2008 (EDT)

This is a very interesting locale, located quite far away from any major city. The Ancestral Puebloan ruins are very well-preserved.

Support. The article looks well-preserved, too, and it has a map. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 10:47, 16 December 2007 (EST)
  • Support, but lukewarm. The article is well done, and it's certainly an interesting place. However, there are two concerns. One, the nearest towns (Durango (Colorado) and Cortez) have only rather sketchy articles, and most of the people who visit MVNP will stay in one of those towns rather than in the park. Two, and something to consider broadly when nominating United States National Parks, I'm not sure it's even possible to do an article on this park in wiki form that approaches the content of more traditional guidebooks, etc. Is it really one of our "best" articles in terms of showing why Wikivoyage is an improvement on commercial products? All of that said, I do support it on its own merits; July and August are good months there. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:15, 16 December 2007 (EST)
  • Support. As someone who's made some contributions to this article, I'm delighted to see it get nominated for DoTM. However, as Bill pointed out, the Durango and Cortez articles really need some work. We really must consider these sorts of things when nominating a National Park article for something, instead of thinking of that article in isolation. And yes, July and August are great times for Mesa Verde. After that, just about half the Park shuts down for the season. (WT-en) PerryPlanet 01:04, 14 January 2008 (EST)

July

Mount Fuji (DotM)

High-quality article with a decidedly different spin on what the "beaten path" is all about. It's on my lifetime list of things to do, and I'd definitely use this article in doing it. Suggested for August, with Windsor (above) moving to DotM instead. (Note that there is a "beaten path" on Fuji, but that doesn't keep it from being OtBP...) -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 14:54, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

Support - very good article. -- -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 16:00, 17 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Support I think the article looks really good. I reorganized a little bit, and removed the external links from the sleep section... there's several more places listed on them, but only 2 in the actual article... is that sufficient, or should we try to pull some more off those sites? Also see Talk:Mount Fuji for another question. Otherwise I think it looks pretty good. (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:28, 18 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Meh I have nothing against the article (I wrote much of it), but Ashikaga, Japan is OTBP as I write this, and the much linked to Fuji Five Lakes article remains red. So I'd like to push this into 2008, and then schedule it in June/July before the climbing season starts. (WT-en) Jpatokal 17:45, 18 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Do not really support. The article in itself is very good, no question about that. However, I am not quite sure that this is a Off the beaten path destination, it is a place most people (including Westerners) have heard of, and know it is possible to climb. It is not a place that people would discover on the top page and say "well, I did not know about that". Previous Japanese features such as Ashikaga or Iya Valley are more representative of an Otbp to me....(WT-en) Tensaibuta 08:49, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
    • So would you support this as a DotM instead? And I agree that it's not very OtBP it's the only hike I've ever done where I've gotten stuck in a human traffic jam. (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:15, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
      • Personally, I'd still say OtBP. Most people have "heard of" Fuji, but relatively few outside Japan have given serious thought to climbing it. Or are there more gaijin on the mountain than I think? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:28, 14 June 2007 (EDT) OK, I give in. DotM rather than OtBP it is; how about it for early summer 2008? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 22:41, 30 November 2007 (EST)
    • I would strongly support as DotM. As for the gaijins on the mountain... even more than in Roppongi on Saturday night :) (WT-en) Tensaibuta 09:37, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
      • Yeah, it's one of those rites of passage for gaijin staying in Tokyo for even a slightly longer time and I'd wager that, percentagewise, more gaijin in Tokyo have done the trek than Tokyo natives. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:05, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
        • Elsewhere, too. Japanese friends have asked me why so many gaijin climb Fuji. I wouldn't object to it being DoTM, but I could still see it as OtBP, given how out-of-the-way Shizuoka is, and how you have to set aside probably three days for it it's something resident gaijin are more likely to do than traveling gaijin on one or two week itineraries. It's OtBP for the average visitor to Japan. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 10:22, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
        • Strictly speaking, it's entirely possible to visit Fuji without climbing it, and this option should perhaps be given a little more weight in the article. (WT-en) Jpatokal 14:24, 1 July 2007 (EDT)
          • Support, though I personally consider it to be more a DoTM than OtBP. Although Shizuoka itself is not a destination, it is only a short hop on the shinkansen from Tokyo. And, as Jpatokal states, legging it up Fuji seems to be thing Western travelers in particular see as a feather in their cap of experiences. However, OtBP is also not an unreasonable assessment.... (WT-en) WindHorse 12:48, 14 June 2007 (EDT
  • Do not support for July or Aug, Ohrid seems more suitable for then To all supporters: Although this is a great article can we please move it to a later date? I feel strongly that the best time to experience Ohrid is July or possbly August, while Fuji Mountain is equally interesting at latter months of the year. Please consider switching it for Ohrid in July. I do support Mount Fuji for any later months. Thanks.
  • Do not support "These are not cast in stone, and the order can be changed if, for example, an excellent guide for a timely event is found." and I agree that in this case for July the timely event is in Ohrid, so I support Ohrid instead for July. * (WT-en) Celia 75.222.59.95 23:31, 19 June 2008 (EDT)
As anyone who has read the article knows, Mount Fuji is only open for climbing in July and August. Hence, no, it's not "equally interesting at latter months of the year". (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 08:10, 20 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Not support Ok, seems just a question of timing here, so lets have Mount Fuji in August, and Ohrid in July. I have read the program on the Ohrid Summer Festival and it is a shame not to feature this when a large number of internationally famoust artists is performing there in July. I will try to make some polishing to fit our standards, please join me its mainly technical work, the info is there. I love the Ohrid article and its a good timing... (WT-en) Miko 09:13, 20 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Not in July The two destinations are both mountains for July, we need diversity and I quite like the Ohrid suggestion. I have been there few years ago and I know entire Skopje goes to Ohrid in the summer, so it is definitely the beaten path in Macedonia. I am not that good at cleaning up, what exactly needs to be changed in that article so we can do it for July? (WT-en) ElenaJ 16:08, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

Dharamsala (OtBP)

Needs a bit of MoS work, but almost ready to go. Note that, as usual in India, few places have anything in the way of a street address (although a map would be great...). Best in February-March when the Dalai Lama drops into town. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:49, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

  • Support. It's a cool destination, decent article, and I just uploaded a (shitty) map that needs much improvement, but at least gives some guidance. (WT-en) cacahuate talk 18:08, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Marginal. This article has a huge amount of white space (at least as I see it in my browser) that should be eliminated. Also, I take Jani's point about lack of street addresses, but it would be nice to at least give hours on the eating places if possible. Finally, and maybe most important, we don't normally use Usable-level articles in OtBP. Fixing the previous concerns would allow it to be promoted to Guide, but until that happens, I'm not sure I can support this. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:33, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
    • My objections have been met. Support, and I'm provisionally scheduling it for March, bumping Cape Maclear to February. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:55, 30 November 2007 (EST)
    • Suggest moving it to April or May. March is still quite cold out there. --(WT-en) Wandering 17:21, 9 January 2008 (EST)
  • Remember that an OtBP that appears in March will still be featured until mid-April, unlike the DotMs. Your point is valid, but because of that delayed appearance, I think March OtBP should be OK. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 17:36, 9 January 2008 (EST)
    • nw. July is probably the perfect month because of the weather and because of HMDL's birthday but what in this world is perfect anyway!--(WT-en) Wandering 17:51, 9 January 2008 (EST)
      • I've now pushed this into July, because we had an Indian destination as OtBP in Jan already. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:30, 15 February 2008 (EST)
  • Support. The article looks reasonably complete (perhaps a few excursions in the Get out section would be nice). Why isn't it already a 'guide' article?--(WT-en) Wandering 14:43, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

June

Chicago (DoTM)

Influential city in the heart of America. It boasts an expansive and informative article complete with many pictures. All times of the year are excellent in Chicago but the summer is most active with many festivals and activities around the city. Best for August or September 2007. (WT-en) AZGSB9 19:50, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

For the whole city, I'd suggest June to coincide with decent weather and Blues Fest, or Jazz Fest at the end of August/beginning of September (with much less decent weather). Chicago/Bronzeville would be a great OtBP for February, since that's Black History Month in the United States. The weather is usually bad in February, though. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 12:25, 28 July 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. This has made enormous strides recently and is now an exceptionally good huge-city compilation of articles. June 2008 looks right. I'd have to take some issue with Marc's assessment, however; it's more accurate to say that all times of year are equally nasty for weather, just in different ways ... climate is not one of Chicago's big attractions! -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 10:04, 1 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Marc and I have finally finished what we intended to do with these articles, and I think June is a fine month to pick. If we don't have another dotm handy, I think it would also be a good May dotm, so people planning for Blues Fest (which begins right up against the beginning of June) might easily find our guide. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:51, 8 January 2008 (EST)

Sligo (OtBP)

User:(WT-en) The.Q has done a fantastic job with this small, historically-significant Irish town. Good for spring, maybe? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:30, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

  • Support. Great article. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:37, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Thanks for the praise *(big grin)*. Obviously I would support this, if my vote counts. --(WT-en) The.Q(t)(c) 08:21, 11 December 2007 (EST)
    • Hey, your opinion counts just as much as anyone else's! :-) -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:58, 11 December 2007 (EST)
    • Great. I'm working on a map, to help complete this article, but it'll probably take me a while, as I'm not very experienced at cartography! --(WT-en) The.Q(t)(c) 05:08, 12 December 2007 (EST)

May

Gori (OtBP)

Gori makes for a very interesting read, anything in Georgia (the country) is way off the beaten path, and our guide is incomparably better and more comprehensive than any printed guides I've ever seen. I've visited the city three times, but still wasn't even aware of half the information now in the guide. The best times of the year to visit are anywhere from April to October, as it may be harder to visit Uplistsikhe during the winter. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:09, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

Support. It's a great article, a great new region to feature, and I want a picture of Stalin up there to share Lenin's glory! (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:56, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Good article. I just saw a new book about Young Stalin that was Gori heavy. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:37, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Well done, and definitely OtBP. I wouldn't object to a one-month slippage to break up destinations in the FSU, however. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:05, 30 November 2007 (EST)
  • Support. (WT-en) Pashley 05:38, 12 December 2007 (EST)

Bergen (DotM)

Great article (only needs a map) and, I believe, DOTM's first foray into Norway. Article recommends May-August. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:57, 9 February 2008 (EST)

  • Support. Wow, this is a great article. Could use a headliner image though (in addition to the map). (WT-en) PerryPlanet 23:01, 9 February 2008 (EST)
  • Support, to be sure, but some other work is needed -- lots of red links in "Get out" and at least one photo that seems to be on the fritz, in addition to the map. None of these are show stoppers, however. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:46, 9 February 2008 (EST)
Photo now off the fritz. 80.202.112.184 17:51, 11 February 2008 (EST)
No red links in the "Get out" section, though the linked articles are pretty thin. 129.177.169.42 11:30, 12 February 2008 (EST)

April

Matsuyama (DotM)

Remarkably thorough article, in good MoS shape. It kinda straddles the line between DotM and OtBP, but it's a pretty popular destination for Japanese and not entirely obscure to visitors to Japan, so I'll tip for DotM. Best times are Mar-Jun, Sep-Nov. (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:58, 9 January 2008 (EST)

  • Support. Borders on a TMI problem, but if straying from perfection, that's definitely the direction to stray in. How about May? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:56, 14 January 2008 (EST)
  • Support. May is fine, but mid-April gets the cherry blossoms. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 18:50, 14 January 2008 (EST)

Now that the guesthouse edit war has died down... one of those up-and-coming destinations where WT whups the competition. Best in Nov-Feb. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:49, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

  • Wait and see. From the sound of the article, there are some key amenities -- airport, major hotel -- that are in the process of getting reconstructed. Might it be better to wait for those to re-open, and then pounce? The quality of the article is certainly more than adequate for OtBP, but it might be a service to the traveler to list it only when the destination is in good shape. Jani? Sounds like you have experience with the place. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:13, 27 October 2007 (EDT)
    • The town is easily accessed from Phnom Penh, the airport already fields flights from Siem Reap and accommodation is not a problem as long as you don't demand five stars. And this is OtbP, after all! (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:08, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. Agreed that, while more may emerge, transport links are in place and widely advertised throughout the region. Good article, too. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 20:37, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

March

Nominated with some misgivings -- for one thing, it's a large enough city to possibly justify districting -- but what's there is well written, the city is important and well-known, and we're running short on city-size DotMs. Would it work in the spring? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 18:48, 30 November 2007 (EST)

  • Support. Yeah, I like that article. March would be a good time - April, particularly the latter half, will be a bit too hot. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:17, 30 November 2007 (EST)

Sheki (OtBP)

This is a great smaller city to explore in Azerbaijan. It has few international tourist every year, but the historical sites from lost civilizations (Caucus Albanians), ancient fortresses, unique food, and friendly atmosphere this is a place that should be visited by more. I have lived here for one year, and it is a pity to see so many ex pats living in Baku, Ganja, and Tbilisi but so few visiting this great place. The Greater Caucus mountains are beautiful no matter if they are covered by snow or by verdant grass and trees. I have been active in writing this part of the guide, and I will continue, but it would be even better to have more contributions and visits. Finally, although Sheki is beautiful all year long, it is best enjoyed from late March to June, when the weather is near perfect every day.(WT-en) Cupcakecommander 09:18, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

  • This has the makings of a very good OtBP, but it needs considerable tidying up:
    • The map is almost surely a copyvio and needs to be removed or replaced.
    • WAY too many photos. Pick the 6-8 best and most illustrative (that are consistent with our copyleft policy) and use those.
    • Many listings need to be formatted according to the MoS, and there's a lot of white space to get rid of.
This article has enormous promise as an OtBP, though, so thanks, and once the formatting issues are resolved, let's look at it very seriously for next March or thereabouts. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:52, 1 August 2007 (EDT)
How is the Sheki page looking after the CoTW? What else should be changed to make it a viable OtBP candidate? (WT-en) Cupcakecommander 02:10, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
I'll answer this, for the time being, on the talk page. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:29, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
Peter just put up a new map of Sheki, so is it ready for OTBP now? I think that it would be great in March or April.. (WT-en) Cupcakecommander 03:03, 13 November 2007 (EST)
Meets my objections entirely. Support, and I'm provisionally scheduling it. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 15:37, 16 November 2007 (EST)
  • Support. I think it's up to OtBP standards now, and it is such a lovely place. I'll be sure to run through it once more for extra MoS polish before it gets featured (Chicago's eating up all my wiki-time right now), but I think it's up to snuff as it is. The only downside I can think of to listing it in the spring is that mountain trekking will probably still be too snowy. Summer/fall might be better. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 04:11, 13 November 2007 (EST)
  • Support. Has lots of interesting details and diversions, perfect for an OtBP. I'd like to see it follow MoS a little closer, but with Peter on the job, I'm sure that won't be a problem. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 08:06, 13 November 2007 (EST)
  • Support. I will help fix any problems that I can to ensure that this will become an OtBP. Just let me know what I can do. (WT-en) Cupcakecommander 02:10, 11 December 2007 (EST)

February

Chiang Mai (DotM)

Excellent article, and might be a good substitute for Pattaya if that's deemed unacceptable again. Best season is winter (Nov-Feb or so), and might (barely) also squeeze into OtBP if needed. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:39, 5 December 2006 (EST)

Support - a good article and a good destination, though I don't know which month is best to feature as all their festivals seem to be in the Winter/early Spring. (WT-en) WindHorse 01:22, 1 February 2007 (EST)
Here's the down load on climate: The hot season is from early March to end of May. Average daytime temperature is 30° Celsius (85° Fahrenheit). The rainy season usually begins early June and reaches to the end of October. Most rain will probably fall in September. So, if Guangzhou is featured in March (see discussion under 'Dubai' above), then feasibly Chiang Mai could be slotted into April in its place. While it is not the best month in terms of temperature (though 30° Celsius day time temps are certainly not unbearable), it is dry, which is probably the most important consideration. (WT-en) WindHorse 04:26, 4 February 2007 (EST)
I wouldn't suggest Chiang Mai for April -- it's not quite as broiling as Bangkok, but it's far less pleasant than winter. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:28, 4 February 2007 (EST)
OK, I take your word for it. I've only ever been there in the Fall. Anyway, we need somewhere to feature in the April slot. Any ideas? I've nominated Shimla for DoM. Don't know whether it up to standard, but if so, April would be a suitable month weather-wise (WT-en) WindHorse 11:09, 4 February 2007 (EST)

SupportFrom what I remember being there, fall is the best time to visit, good weather and not too crowded!(WT-en) Felixboy 14:41, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

As Chiang-Mai cannot feature until November at earliest, I suggest holding the article until February. It is good time weather wise and also the month when the famous Chiang Mai Flower Festival is held. (WT-en) WindHorse 03:11, 19 June 2007 (EDT)

A small fishing village on Lake Malawi in Southern Malawi that has become a bit of a "traveler's black hole". There are activities to do here, which are described but the pace of life is slow, and beach bumming is apparently the norm. The place is definately off the beaten path, but there are details for hotels etc. Not sure of the best time to visit. -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 08:45, 18 August 2007 (EDT)

  • Almost support, but not quite yet. We could always use more Africa articles, and this one is both interesting and very far off the beaten path, which is a good thing. However, it really needs some MoS work. Do that and I'll support it unequivocally. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:39, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
I've done a bit of MoS work on it, anything other objections? -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 08:20, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
More could still be done, but yes, this meets my concerns. Support now. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:22, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. For an OTBP article, it's good enough. Map might be nice though. (WT-en) Jpatokal 06:37, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
I'd pip for this in Feb just for geographical variety -- the other alternative, Sihanoukville, is a bit too close to Chiang Mai for comfort. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:10, 9 February 2008 (EST)
I'd been just about to put something on the talk page pointing out that we need to choose between these two, but I think you're right. I'll make the appropriate change to the schedule table. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:15, 9 February 2008 (EST)

January

Dubai (DotM)

Important (if weird) destination, and the article is well turned out with good photos and considerable local color. Could use a map, but that's not a show-stopper. Alternative to Yosemite (which, unlike Dubai, could work equally well later in the year) for May? Or Pattaya for February? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 10:57, 24 November 2006 (EST)

  • Oppose, not very loudly. Many listings, esp. in Eat, are deficient and/or not in MoS format. Some of the pics are redundant or violate the privacy policy. And May is already blazing hot... (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:26, 24 November 2006 (EST)
    • You're right about the privacy policy; that one needs to be fixed. Simple enough to do, however. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:20, 24 November 2006 (EST)
  • Well, without looking at the article, I'd say that it makes much more sense to slot it for winter months, when we usually have a shortage. (WT-en) Ravikiran 12:17, 24 November 2006 (EST)
  • I'd like to see this become DotM as it was a CotW earlier this year, and I like it when they become DotM. I'll attack the MoSless bits and sort that picture out now. That makes this a support once I've done a bit of work on it... but could do with a few extra contribs.... -- (WT-en) Tim 18:33, 24 November 2006 (EST)
    • Right, I've given the unMoS bits a once over... But it needs a cope section... -- (WT-en) Tim 19:12, 24 November 2006 (EST)
  • Support: would rather have Dubai than Pattaya, although the restaurant listings here need addresses. - (WT-en) DanielC 08:52, 1 December 2006 (EST)
Support - though maybe this is best as a winter feature when those in the northern hemisphere seek sun and warmth. (WT-en) WindHorse 01:28, 1 February 2007 (EST)
There seem to be some objections to using Berlin in March. Could it be slotted then? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:42, 2 February 2007 (EST)
Support featuring Dubai for March instead of Berlin. (WT-en) WindHorse 20:02, 2 February 2007 (EST)
I don't think Dubai or Berlin are in DotM shape yet. I mean, look at stuff like this: "The majority of the people using the bus system are lower-class Indians". The article needs a pretty comprehensive rework which I'll be happy to provide but only in May, when I'll be paying a visit. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:15, 2 February 2007 (EST)
Yeah, it's not perfect, but got a better idea? March is getting close, there is a shortage of viable candidates, and I do think this one is in better shape than Berlin. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:28, 2 February 2007 (EST)
I take Jpatokal's point regarding this article (incidentally, I have removed the specific offending sentence that was referred to). However, as Bill said, there are no other apparent options. Ideas? (WT-en) WindHorse 07:16, 3 February 2007 (EST)
Why not bump up Guangzhou? The article actually says that finding accommodation during the yearly trade fair in April can be difficult, so March would seem better. Yahoo Weather says average March temps are 22/15°C hi/lo with 9cm of rain, which sounds pretty pleasant in my (tropical) book. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:09, 3 February 2007 (EST)
Yeah, that's certainly a possibility and, as you say, the weather there in March is pretty good. Another option is to slip Dubai in as the next CoW to see whether a group effort can bring it up to standard before the end of this month. Either way is fine with me. (WT-en) WindHorse 08:46, 3 February 2007 (EST)
Dubai makes a great winter destination, so I'd prefer to keep it for a better time. And I'm really not satisfied with the quality of the article, yet. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:53, 3 February 2007 (EST)
OK, then unless there is any major dissent, bump up Guangzhou. That leaves the question of April - bump up Yosemite National Park or slip in Chaing Mai. I've not been to Chiang Mai in Spring, but I imagine that it is not a bad time to visit. Thoughts? (WT-en) WindHorse 09:02, 3 February 2007 (EST)
If there was a gap for April, that would be a resonable time for Cambridge - it needs little, if any sorting out which I am happy to do (lived there for 3 years). -- (WT-en) DanielC 14:28, 4 February 2007 (EST)
I think that the Museums and Galleries section for Cambridge needs modifying. If that can be a little more MoSed it would probably be a good candiate for the April slot. (WT-en) WindHorse 21:56, 4 February 2007 (EST)
  • So have the issues been resolved at least to the point that we could run Dubai in November 07? It's time to come up with something for that month, according to our rolling schedule. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:41, 7 June 2007 (EDT)
I was kinda hoping to hold it until January 2009, when Mr. Cheney goes back to work at Halliburton in their new headquarters. :) The Eat listings still need addresses (or at least phone numbers to get directions), which would be good to have addressed before featuring it. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 10:18, 7 June 2007 (EDT)
With regards to phone numbers and addresses for eat listings, most of the mid range and splurge are on the net so it's not going to be hard to get hold of details. It's just been added to my list of things to do! -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 05:49, 17 June 2007 (EDT)
Added the phone numbers and addresses for as many of the eat listings as possible. There were one or two which I couldn't find. -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 13:54, 1 July 2007 (EDT)
  • Oppose. Just glancing at the article, parts of it seems to read like an advertisement. Such as "It is a city of superlatives: for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest, Dubai is the destination." And then a lot of the See/Do listings feel empty and incomplete. I dunno, I understand there's a lack of articles for winter, but I think we should put this one off for a couple of years, to get the article ready for when the Burj Dubai and all those other crazy developments are near completion. :) (WT-en) PerryPlanet 20:59, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
    • That sentence has a very valid point, although it may not come through very well -- practically everything built in Dubai is intended to be the world's tallest tower, the world's most luxurious hotel, the world's largest ski dome, the world's first underwater hotel, yadda yadda. That said, I don't think Dubai is among our best articles and I'm OK with pushing it back in the queue. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:09, 11 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Oh no, I agree with you, Dubai is certainly becoming a city of superlatives -- I just think there's gotta be a better way to put it than that. Right now it just sounds like some cheesy ad. (WT-en) PerryPlanet 12:04, 11 August 2007 (EDT)
    • Problem is, the queue for DotM is pretty sparse right now, and we're only a week or so away from needing something for January -- where it is currently scheduled. Are you guys willing to swallow your objections and schedule it? If not, got a better idea? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:33, 22 December 2007 (EST)
Looks like we are pretty tied up. While I still have some misgivings with the article, I do take back my previous stance. Support. (WT-en) PerryPlanet 17:16, 26 December 2007 (EST)

I am going there for my honeymoon and on return, I am fully determined to make this up to scratch. Any ideas on what it lacks will be appreciated. (WT-en) Ravikiran 14:25, 5 January 2007 (EST)

Bump. We are leaving on the 26th for the place. (WT-en) Ravikiran 05:58, 22 January 2007 (EST)
  • Support I just cleaned this up more and added several new pictures, and added a map a couple weeks back as well. Having spent a month there, I'd say this article is very much near-complete... the only thing I can think of adding is a drop-dead gorgeous sunset picture at Radhanagar Beach... no offense to the already decent one we've got by Ravikiran, I've seen some nicer sunsets there, and some knockout pics, just not that meet our license requirements, yet. It would probably be best to feature this in February, March or April, though it could also go in September/October/November if we were desperate to fill a slot. (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:47, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
  • I think it needs some telephone numbers for the sleep & eat places if at all possible, plus some "Drink" places. Some of the "Eat" and the "Internet" need addresses. What does "PCO/ISD's" mean? If thse were fixed I would support it. -- (WT-en) DanielC 16:05, 25 May 2007 (EDT)
Most place on the island don't have telephones, which is why there aren't any listed... and the same for addresses, there's just 2 roads on island and no street addresses, so the only way to list them is by saying which beach they're at... believe it or not, this article is pretty darn complete. It covers almost all of the possible things to do and the main places to stay. The only drinking options are to buy beer at the beer shop near the port (that's already listed) or from a few of the guesthouse restaurants (also mentioned), so there's no way to expand that. PCO/ISD's are the phone booths around India... PCO for local, ISD for international, they're all over India and explained in the main guide, and I just added a little clarifying note on the Havelock page too (WT-en) cacahuate talk 04:08, 26 May 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. This would be a good winter destination. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:07, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
  • Support. A clear article with good images. Agree that it would make an excellent winter destination. (WT-en) WindHorse 20:11, 13 June 2007 (EDT)
Just a note, Dec and most of Jan can be not so great weather, so better to feature after that, or just before would be second best (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:39, 13 June 2007 (EDT)
Remember, though, that a "January" OtBP is displayed for as much of February as January, because of our mid-month OtBP change date. Between that and the logistics issues if anyone actually uses the OtBP to plan a trip there, I suspect January may be a better month to feature this article, with the idea that by the time people actually use the information, it'll be later in the winter and the weather will have improved. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 10:55, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
True. Probably fine then for January, and still great for Feb or March if it needs to be bumped to fit other stuff in. (WT-en) cacahuate talk 13:31, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
  • Support, although I'd drop the Island Vinnie's tent photo - too dark. How about February, then? (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 10:10, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
