Hey Thanks Peter.. will keep updating stuff :) —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Ankurbhandari (talkcontribs)

Thanks, for the advice Peter. I will continue to improve Colorado's Wine Country, as it is a really great part of the state's tourism. Any feedback is appreciated. (WT-en) WineCountryInn 21:52, 7 January 2009 (EST)

Thanks for the compliments. Look forward to expand the (lacking) info on Franconia, Germany. Doesn't do it justice. (WT-en) Hokiesvt 13:25, 13 March 2009 (EDT)

Thanks for the message Peter, really appreciated- I'll keep on updating the Exeter page enthusiastically! --(WT-en) Electricotter 08:21, 24 March 2009 (EDT)

Thanks for the compliment. It all started because my friend complained our town had no article while some dumpy town in Arkansas did. I also happen to be proud of my town and tenacious when it comes to work like this. :) --(WT-en) TrekkingTurtle 00:36, 11 April 2009 (EDT)

EE's talk page[edit]

While I understand your motivation, I think you were out of line to block EE over his edits to his own Talk page; there's no rule on WT that says you can't blank it. I've removed the protection and the block. → Project:Using talk pages#Blanking talk pages (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:43, 7 January 2009 (EST)

I have no issue with your previous blocks of EE. However, the only reason you stated in the last block was "edit warring", and based on his contribution logs [1], the only pages on which I see "edit warring" on Jan 6-7 was his own Talk page. His abusive comments to you were a response to your reverts. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:30, 7 January 2009 (EST)
Also, I can't help but point out that on [2], you yourself said that "I'd say the user's own userspace would be the last refuge of a scoundrel's plea"... (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:32, 7 January 2009 (EST)
No, check the history of my talk page again, which is extremely short right now, and notice the edit warring. Check the block log as well—I did not block him following edit warring on his page (which I ended via a protect). I blocked him immediately following repeated abusive comments on my talk page. And what I said about his userspace seems very clear to me. He has the right to make his case there in whatever manner he chooses. That does not include erasing other people's comments. As I said on your talk page, undoing my good faith block and protection, and I still can't see how these violated any policy, was inappropriate, and caused a good deal more trouble than it resolved. --Peter Talk 13:52, 7 January 2009 (EST)

Link Removal[edit]

Hi Peter,

I entered a link to www dot citybaseapartments dot com on the wikivoyage section on 31/12 and I think you removed it. Please may I ask why this is?

I have just looked and there are other links on there which provide the same service as us - i.e. www.rentalinrome.com that have not been removed - was there something incorrect in the link / comment I placed?

please can you reply on my talk page - thanks —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) JHardy (talkcontribs)

User block 2009-01-09[edit]

Hi Peter,

Just wondering what the block situation with Edmontonenthusiast tonight was about. I see nothing in his contrib log before the initial ban was put in place, and there is no obvious reason given for that block. Does an admin undo remove the edit record from the user's contrib log? You comment about Marc being w.in bounds of policy I find hard to justify when the raon of edit war-ing is given, but with no obvious trail. If things are removed from the user's contrib log on an admin undo, can I strongly suggest these be avoided so that the history is preserved so that people can see the edit war that was going on.

To be quite frank, I am starting to tire of this whole situation between yourself and Ee... While you are an admin (and a sysop?) and therefore a community member I has respect for, the constant battle between yourself and Ee is starting to get overboard. Yes, I know other admins have been involved, but it is your name that I see far more than anyone else's when dealing with Ee. I am not condoning his behaviour... I agree he has acted childishly at times, and against advice of others. However, he does appear to be trying to take things on board, but it's also clear that the 2 of you are now merely provoking each other, and it's going to cause more harm than good. The only way you are going to get through to Ee is to ban him. Remeber, he is young and so probably not used to this sort of collaborative environment and working with other people. However, the war this is turning into is not going to help him develop those skills; and, it has to be said, he is the future!

Can I suggest that you step back from the situation... There are other admins who Ee seems to listen to and who are, perhaps, more willing to take the time to re-educate him without things descending into a war between 2 people. Yes, I know others have tried and lost patience, but I would much rather someone who can get through to Ee take over and try and deal with this is a more constructive way. Plus there are many of us on here who are happy to do monitoring work to take care of any obvious problems.

I'm sorry if you are unhappy with anything I have said here Peter, and I hope you understand I am trying to take this from a totally neutral standpoint. I've not been here as long as you, and realise that as someone who has risen to the rank of admin you have put a lot of time and effort into the site. But I want to be clear that I am not taking anyone's side... As I said above, Ee has really not helped himself, but I do feel both parties here are now just provoking each other, which is only going to spiral into anarchy or a lot of bad fallout. However, I am just trying to be honest and offer a view on this from someone who has tried to remain as outside of the situation as possible.

As Ee himself would say, Keep Smiling! and I am more than happy to listen to anything anyone else has to say on the matter and try to find a constructive way forward for everyone for the sake of the project.

(WT-en) Nrms 17:03, 9 January 2009 (EST)

Peter's the flavor of the moment but by no means acting alone or without support, this situation has nothing to do with Peter... we've all taken turns. EE's age has nothing to do with this either, a 16 year old ran the Spanish version nearly singlehandedly for ages, the Hindi version was launched by a 14 year old, and star articles have been written by 18 year olds... all who had the desire and took the time to watch how a wiki community works, and adjust their actions accordingly. At this point I feel it's better that we stop continually discussing this case, everyone get back to writing travel guides, and just know that that his leash is still quite short and will remain so into the distant future – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 20:49, 9 January 2009 (EST)
"To be quite frank," your comment following the first paragraph strikes me as uninformed grandstanding, and I'm at pains to think of a way to respond to it that would be productive. To answer your question, though, I blocked EE on this occassion to restore the block placed there by User:(WT-en) Gorilla Jones, which had been removed by User:(WT-en) Sapphire without discussion. This action came on the heels of another admin undoing a block I had placed, and after I tried to make it clear that I thought it was inappopriate to do so without discussion. So I restored this particular block in the hopes of being as clear as possible that admins shouldn't be warring over blocks. Doing so started this discussion.
As to why the block was placed in the first place, it would appear it was due to edit warring this edit. To better understand why we would temp block this user for edit warring, look at this, and look over his (WT-en) talk page, particularly User:Peterfitzgerald/EEarchive#Blocks_and_protections. --Peter Talk 17:33, 11 January 2009 (EST)
Peter, don't take this rudely or anything but the fact is that it wasn't my fault that I was un blocked and it was unfair to block me for another day. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:10, 11 January 2009 (EST).
Uninformed Grandstanding? Care to elaborate? Is what you call anyone expressing an opinion that doesn't fit with your personal way of thinking? Am I not allowed to express a frank opinion? I have been watching what's been going on but I have tried not to get involved. However, the constant war that is going on is really starting to detract from my enjoyment of the project. I notice tonight you reverted an edit by Ee [[3]] which, in gneral, I see nothing wrong with. In fact, to ensure I wasn't missing something I even asked someone living with me to read the comment, and she too failed to see any obvious reason why it would be reverted. My only objection would be to the 1-line comment "I don't mean to be rude in any way, but Cacahuate, you basically encouraged Peter in all of this," but I do not feel this warrants a revert (which may trigger an edit war) but could be better dealt with by a follow-up warning against the use of that sort of comment.
Regarding your feedback, I am not disagreeing with the policy of temp banning for edit warring; however it was not overly obvious where the edit war that lead to the temp ban being put in place. Whilst I agree his comment is not in best taste, I can kind of see how he might be getting slightly frustrated by all this, and has perhaps wiki-ed in anger. All I know is that I'm looking forward to being on the road for a few days this coming week and so I can get away from Wikivoyage for a bit, and hope this all calms down by the time I get back. Well one can live in hope!
And Ee, that comment above is just the kind of whinging that's caused some people to take a dislike of you. Don't react to everything that is said about you. Sometimes you just have to keep a low profile and let people calm down and try and build up again with a clean slate. This is just why I made my original comment about people now just provoking each other! (WT-en) Nrms 18:25, 11 January 2009 (EST)
Nrms, thanks but if nobody reverted my stuff everytime I wouldn't comment on EVERYTHING. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:27, 11 January 2009 (EST).

Hi Peter - in the interest of defusing the current mess, would you be agreeable to not reverting comments such as this one for a while? I fully understand your thinking in removing these comments and agree that it is fair to treat a user whose's recent contributions consist solely of provocation and attacks on others as we would anyone who was trolling, but in the interest of toning things down would it be possible to rely on others to revert those comments as necessary? And note that this applies only to pages not in your userspace - I'm fully in support of you reverting comments on your talk page as you see fit. Also, since episodes like this one tend to reduce people's enthusiasm about contributing, let me say that I will still be wearing my "Peter for President" button as soon as they are available to the public in honor of your many awesome contributions, particularly your utter kickass-ery in the area of creating maps and regional breakdowns. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 18:29, 11 January 2009 (EST)

I am more than happy indeed to take a step back and let others take care of things. I'm traveling anyway right now. I am, however, feeling quite attacked on this matter, and the lack of support—even outright accusations of abuse of power—from other admins is startling and disappointing. I've said what I think has needed to be said in the most basic defense of my position, am trying hard not to be drawn into pointless tit for tats, and am going to take a good long wikibreak. --Peter Talk 19:00, 11 January 2009 (EST)
Enjoy the break, and definitely don't let anything get to you... you've put a lot of good effort into handling this in many different ways, all of which are noble, including the patient and ridiculously persistent guidance that you participated in in the early stages of this current situation, which are sadly out of focus to those that are getting involved in the 9th inning – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:43, 11 January 2009 (EST)
I'll echo that, I've stepped away from this, since I don't have a clue what to do any more, and I think the criticism is harsh and largely unjustified, given the circumstances, and that many of us agreed that this was the best course of action. Anyway again, don't take me being silent as lack of support, that's not what it is - and enjoy your break and travels - you'll be missed --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:57, 11 January 2009 (EST)
Me too(tm). I'm in a way responsible for starting this hullabaloo with my unblocking, which I'm now starting to regret -- I think we all understand perfectly why you did it, even if there is some disagreement with the rationale, and I had no intention of implying that you were abusing your powers. So please accept my apologies, and here's hoping WT, and you, come back stronger. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:32, 11 January 2009 (EST)
You fellows were like moths to the flame with EE. I am glad he is gone and happy Peter is back. WT is a great project and people like you make it even better. Welcome back Peter (WT-en) 2old 09:16, 2 February 2009 (EST)

Collaboration of the month[edit]

Just wondering if you drafted up something, to try and get this going? I'd really like to see a collaboration on Rome, to try and gain a consensus on districts, moving things to the appropriate districts, and fixing up the entries and MOS issues - it's getting lonely trying to deal with this myself :) --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 03:11, 5 February 2009 (EST)

Question about external link[edit]

Hi Thank you for for the advice. I am new on wikivoyage and I have read policy on external links but I do not understand what part is wrong with link I added? There is similar kind of that link I saw in some other page and then I add. Example in article cappadocia Get around write cappadocia Tour Travel then link to http://www.cappadociahotairballoon.com/ which page is about hot air ballooning tour in cappadocia. Then I add tour and travel www.araratturkey.com that includes all cappadocia hiking tour and information which one erased. Is it violation of policy because I do not add direct link like http://www.araratturkey.com/hiking_cappadocia.php or is it something else? Please explain to I do not make same mistake again. Thank you. (WT-en) Suplilumas 05:38, 4 February 2009 (EST)

Australia Map[edit]

East to west:

  • Are red lines motorways?
If so, there are a few more of them, right across Australia.
The Pacific Hwy, Sydney to Brisbane is far from a motorway.
Bits of the Highway 31 aren't either.
  • Alphanumerics are used in states that don't use them yet.
Strictly speaking the M31 only begins just north of the Victorian border at the moment, the rest is just national highway 31. I think most people will get M31 though.
The A32 isn't used in NSW (except on some obscure intersections). Most people won't know this road, and will have difficulty following it.
  • Some numbered routes aren't marked.
National Route 1 isn't marked between Sydney -> Melbourne, or Melbourne -> Adelaide, even though the roads are.
  • Hobart is a little misplaced
Hobart looks a little inland, I think the dot should be almost on the coast.
  • Route 20, looks like it goes from Adelaide to Canberra, but it doesn't really. It finishes on the Hume near Wagga Wagga, and you would need to take the Hume North to Yass to join the Barton (National Highway 25) into Canberra.
  • National Route 66, is signposted National A2, in Queensland, but I think national 66 is probably still reasonable.
  • Some minor roads are included
The road north from Cairna would appear to be the Penisula Developmental Road. To go up there, is a bit of a serious undertaking. Probably a bit misleading to mark it in the same line type as the rest. The road to Cooktown is sealed, and fine. Along the coast to Cape Tribulation is fine, even National Route 1, may be a better alternative to show.
  • The Sunshine Coast looks odd, when the Gold Coast is actually a bigger destination. Less room to add it though, I guess.
  • Great Barrier Reef looks a little like land, and the blue dot on it makes no sense to me. Why there?
  • Maybe consider adding some destinations
Alice Springs in the centre is common
Broome up in the North West. Its a popular tourist destination, and the area looks a little sparse.
  • National Highway Shields, National Route shields, Alpha-numeric shields are a little misused.
The A32 isn't a national highway
Neither is the National Route 1 to Brisbane, past Newcastle (New South Wales), although this may change, with Austlink now taking responsibility for the road.
The Western Australia routes, 94, 95 are national highways, as are the parts of the national route 1, that join to them (not the bits around the coast)

I'll add anything else I think of. Have you considered just putting the national highways and national route 1 on the map? That would give both the major through routes, and most of the major touring routes, consistently and without too much clutter. --(WT-en) Inas 00:23, 12 February 2009 (EST)

I just went on to wikipedia, and found this [4]. It shows what I mean about the national highways. --(WT-en) Inas 00:27, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Looks much better! I think adding three bits of Highway 1 (National Route 1), popular with travellers.
  • The Pacific Hwy, National Route 1, between Sydney and Brisbane, along the coast. Probably the most traversed route by travelers. This was on the previous map. This is just the 1 on a white shield, essentially from Newcastle to Brisbane.
  • Highway 1, (National Route 1) from Broome down to Perth along the coast, and down through Albany. Again, a popular route with travellers. Again, this was on the previous map. This is the same white shield again.
  • The Princes Hwy from Sydney to Melbourne, the coastal route, Highway 1 (National Route 1). This is the 1 on white shield to the Vic border, and then it becomes the A1, then M1. Probably sufficient to skip the M1 bit.
I think it then would make a very good summary map.
Oh, and the Gold Coast seems to have moved into New South Wales. I'm not sure if there is space to squeeze it into Queensland. --(WT-en) Inas 17:34, 12 February 2009 (EST)
I like it. I'm throwing away by Atlas, and I'll be navigating by wikivoyage from now on :-) Would I be the most pedantic person in the world, if I said that the A1 south of the Vic border, isn't a national route, and should be in the horizontal oblong shape, and not a shield? Anyway, good stuff. --(WT-en) Inas 21:17, 12 February 2009 (EST)

I've looked at it, but feel out of my depth, since I don't know the first thing about the area (my Japan travels never went north of Kyoto). From looking at the discussion, it definitely seems that the various areas included in the administrative boundaries of the city of Hamamatsu should be broken into separate articles, but the disagreement is over whether to cover outlying "towns" as towns, or to group them as districts. Do I have that right? --Peter Talk 17:53, 23 February 2009 (EST)

Australia's Northern Territory[edit]

Hi Peter, I wanted to get back in contact with you about the Northern Territory aricles I have been working on re your comments a few months ago.

"Your work is really looking great! I took a look around the Northern Territory articles, and spotted a couple issues.

First, ideally, specific listings should be placed in individual destination guides (cities & parks) rather than the region articles. I'd only include listings in the region articles when the town they are in is too small to write about, or if they are off in the wilderness and too far away from any town to include them in a city/town article. So the region articles should be mostly just prose.

Second, all linked destinations must have at least usable status to consider the region article a guide; for the region to be a star, all linked destinations must be at guide status. So articles like Top End Australia, for example, should be created and filled out.

Keep up the great work! --Peter Talk 17:11, 25 November 2008 (EST) "

I have updated the articles following the wiki rules to the best of my understanding, I was hoping you would be able to let me know what more needs to be done to improve their status. Any comments would be greatly appreciated at this point, as would any upgrades!!

Koryakia[edit]

I merged the couple of sentences about Koryakia with Kamchatka and turned the former into a redirect page. Sertmann mentioned on my talk page that you spent a lot of time with the Russian hierarchy, so I thought I'd mention that here. Unless the Kamchatka article were retitled "Kamchatka Krai", the Kamchatka peninsula includes almost all of Koryakia...so to me it seemed like a no-brainer to merge the two. Deleting Copyright Violations[edit]

Pleas see Project:Votes for undeletion#Several Copyright Violations. I think you are being a wee bit zealous deleting articles with valid names, even when the user is spamming the page creations. At least tag the violations with a {{copyvio}} until the user next edits the page, then kill the violations if the user ignores the message. Comments in the wikitext might also help. I know it is a bit more work than simply deleting the pages, but the pages are going to come back eventually if you don't take the extra effort now. - (WT-en) Huttite 09:20, 25 February 2009 (EST)

I've responded on the vfu page. But to quote yourself, "I fail to see the need to ever delete any wiki page that is not either (i) totally off topic and has no hope of redirection, (ii) spam, (iii) a copyright violation (iv) is offensive or (v) causes a technical issue or problem."
More to the point, it is bad site architecture to require more work in cleaning than in creating. For that reason, it takes more steps to add content than for an admin to revert it. That is not the case if a user spams undesirable page creations, and the community is required to go through and painstakingly clean it up. We already have a lot of undesirable edits go unpatrolled on Wikivoyage, and the extra time I take to clean up this user's page creations, in addition to the significant time spent trying to steer him in the right direction, is time taken away from patrolling other edits. --Peter Talk 13:39, 26 February 2009 (EST)

Adding pictures of business establishments is frowned upon as touting. So is adding listings to multiple pages. So is promotional language. This is all covered in the policy articles you have been asked to read and follow. Edit warring is a more serious offense, and is liable to get your business establishment blacklisted. --Peter Talk 13:37, 2 March 2009 (EST)

I noticed you made revisions to these pages. I have been corresponding with Stefan (sertmann) and he was the one that actually made the edits to go with the picture and the link to the front royal page. please review my talk to see that he aggred that this was OK as we are trying to actually build info on to these pages to hopefully build tourism in these areas vs competing areas. sertmann and i discussed at length touting, etc. and he agreed that this small blurb with pic and link to the front royal page was acceptable.

"Good, I'll unprotect in a minute - some comments though; One listing per business is a long standing policy, which you need to discuss elsewhere, we work by consensus around here, and that one is a long standing policy - what you can do is what I did to one of your golf listings - Name of place in name of city - to link to the details, instead of having the info scattered all over the place (that also means if a details change, you don't have to update information on 15 different guides). Don't upload copyrighted images like the one of the hotel, and make sure that the information don't sound like it would on the hotels website or in an ad brochure, especially the info for the hotel is a far cry off how we want things to look here. --Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:06, 2 March 2009 (EST) "

this is what he said, yet you just deleted all my links that he states are acceptable

ALSO, "However, you are welcome to promote golf in Virginia by adding general information about golf to the state-level article - for example, pointing out areas where people tend to go to golf, why Virginia is a good golf destination, etc. Keep it reasonably high-level (2-3 paragraphs) --Ryan"

I created the Golf heading and typed two nice paragraphs about Golf in VA as Ryan suggested and this put the type of link that Sertmann had created for me on there and you deleted that! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) AstrosTexans (talkcontribs)

First, please do not delete content on my user talk page. Second, I reverted your edit to Virginia because you re-added a link to your golf course on the Virginia page; that is clearly in violation of policy (which you have read), in addition to what you have been told on your talk page. I do think I went overboard with reverting the content you added in this edit that was acceptable per policy—my apologies. That all said, as of the current time, I am fine with the content in question as it stands. --Peter Talk 16:17, 2 March 2009 (EST)

Deletion of MiamiMadness[edit]

Peter, Thank you for your concern, as this was filed under the wrong section. I accidentally was signed in under ChicagoChica. Can you please send me the material that you deleted for that page so my work is not lost? You may copy it here so I can keep it in my archives. Thanks.

You have a good point. I can edit everything under HotelsCombined if that is the way this is supposed to be done. I just figured it would be better to start a new account for each city. However, please give me by write-up back that you deleted, as it took me a while to create it. THANKS!

User:(WT-en) SanFranciscoGirl, User:(WT-en) MiamiMadness, User:(WT-en) ChicagoChica and User:(WT-en) HotelsCombined are all the same entity, and the user has just recreated the MiamiMadness page, after he/she asked to have it recreated to keep in his/her archive. Новая станция 4 линии "Спасская" собственного выхода в город не имеет (обещают сделать через год), поэтому изображать её на карте не надо. I saw your {{style}} tag on B'more and decided to dig in. My original plan was to pick a day (April 14), get rate quotes from each hotel's web site, and then use it as basis for sorting the listings. Of course, a lot of the web sites were wrong, so this is turning out to be a multi-session endeavor... Anyway, it supports my belief that someone needs to move Baltimore to the huge city format. --(WT-en) Jonboy 12:42, 14 March 2009 (EDT)

Detroit[edit]

Not quite sure why you've twice reverted my warning boxes on Detroit. Detroit is an extraordinarily dangerous place that nobody should ever visit unless they absolutely, positively have to. The entire city (literally the ENTIRE city other than about a ten block area immediately around the Rennaissance Center) is nothing but a giant, abandoned wasteland full of drug addicts and gang members. Inexplicably, the Detroit page seems to actually encourage people to visit this terrible place. We don't encourage people to visit Mogadishu or Baghdad, and Detroit is the closest equivalent we have in the Western Hemisphere, so I'm confused as to why there aren't any warning boxes there. Could you explain please? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 71.249.180.221 (talkcontribs)

removal of my contribution to Rome South[edit]

Peter,

I have never heard of or looked at www.flexijourney.com/Rome. The only copying (in a heavily edited form) was from my own and others contributions to the pages on the Appian Way in Wikipedia. I live in the area and my observations on the 118 bus were based on personal experience and on seeing scores of miserable tourists standing at the side of the road waiting for a bus back to Rome. Hawaiian rentals[edit]

Aloha Peter,

Actually, Hawaiianbeachrentals.com is not my site. I have contributed a bit to these Hawaii pages and I was just trying to put good info in there. I was trying to get the Maui accommodations started and Hawaiianbeachrentals.com is just the most comprehensive site - plus they come up #1 for Maui vacation rentals so I thought you would want to give your visitors the best site possible.

My site is actually Napali.com and Kauaiexplorer.com (I have others, but these are my vacation sites). I was thinking about building out the Na Pali section (as it is quite blank) but I think your guidelines say not to link out to your own site, so I don't know if this would be worth it to me. Could I link back to my sites if I completed the page?

I read the guidelines you sent me. Thanks for pointing out the apartment aggregators policy to me. I see several links within the "Stay" sections violating this policy. For instance (on Kauai), these are all vacation management companies similar to Hawaiianbeachrentals.com:

Coastline Cottages at Poipu Beach - Coastline cottages is a vacation rental management company with several rentals in Poipu Makahuena - points to Luxury Quest which is a vacation rental management company servicing areas outside of Hawaii as well PoipuKai Resort - Goes to Suite Paradise who manages rentals across several properties in Poipu.

I'll go through and remove these if you like - let me know. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HawaiiFi (talkcontribs)

Aloha Peter,
I'm a little bit confused. Hawaiianbeachrentals.com rents by the day and has offices on each island. So wouldn't they fit within the guidelines?
Also, back to the Na Pali section. Can I link back to my own sites? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HawaiiFi (talkcontribs)
I read through the guidelines even further. I think hawaiianbeachrentals.com meets these guidelines. Unfortunately, I just think I did not include all the required information in the listing. Should I re-post with all the information that is supposed to be included per the guidelines?
Also, all the other vacation rental agencies I mentioned previously, except for luxuryquest.com, do meet the guidelines so I won't remove those. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HawaiiFi (talkcontribs)

Rome apartments[edit]

Why you cancel every time our hotel in Trastevere ???? Relais Rome Sweet Home Trastevere located in Viale Trastevere 70 !!!! This hotel exists !!!! You can't cancel it !! Please see some examples : —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 79.6.57.160 (talkcontribs)

I believe you are quite confused. Your agency is not a hotel, it is a rental agency. You are right, however, that regardless of what actions I may take on this wiki, I cannot "cancel" your hotel (especially since you do not have one), but I don't see how this is relevant.
Your rental agency is linked, and enjoys a rather special position on the main Rome article sleep section. Adding additional links to the district articles, including Trastevere, is considered touting.
Additionally, I have removed the links you provided as "examples" because I do not want my talk page being used for linkspam. --Peter Talk 03:26, 31 March 2009 (EDT)

Dear Peter ther is a big mistake because you are right we have a rental agency called Rome Sweet Home the office is in Via della Vite 32 but we have even this small hotel/guest house that is called Relais Rome Sweet Home Trastevere located in Viale Trastevere 70 , that is totally indipendent from the agency !!! You can check this matter on Expedia , Tripadvisor , Lastminute etc. etc. Thanks for your help . —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 79.43.224.28 (talkcontribs)

I do not understand you. You have a rental agency called Rome Sweet Home. You have a small hotel/guest house called Rome Sweet Home. How is this not an apartment booked through your agency? --Peter Talk 17:01, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

No we have two different business !!!!! Rome Sweet Home is a rental agency placed correctly in the overview page , meanwhile Relais Rome Sweet Home Trastevere is an small hotel located in Viale Trastevere 70 and is not the same partners and company of Rome Sweet Home , please check on Tripadvisor.com or trivago.com . You have no rights to cancel this hotel please understand this matter.

Unfortuantly for you, we have indisputable evidence that Rome's hotel owners can't be trusted with self censorship. Trust me, we would rather not spend all the energy on keeping our Rome guide humanly readable, but unfortunately it is obviously required - take a look at that link and tell me which hotel you'd choose if you couldn't choose your own - pretty hard eh? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 06:25, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
What means this link ? The rule is to help travellers to choose by themselves hotels in that area ( Trastevere ) , we have an official authorization from Comune di Roma to have the hotel . Why you & Peter want to hide this hotel ? Please explain why a regular hotel cannot stay into the proper district ? Do you mean you don't like the hotel ?
This is a copy of Wikivoyage policy for business owners : Contribute
If you own a restaurant, hotel, bar, or popular tourist attraction, plunge forward and add a listing for it. Find the article for the city or district it is located in, and add it to the appropriate section (See, Do, Buy, Eat, Drink, Sleep). Even if your business fits into more than one of these sections it should be listed only once - for example, if your hotel has a restaurant and bar, list the hotel under "Sleep" and mention that there is a restaurant and bar. Take a look at our style guidelines to see how to format your listing. Those guidelines also explain the kinds of businesses we'd rather not include, such as third-party booking services; we want to put travellers in direct contact with the people they'll be patronizing.
We don't use images of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, etc. Please try to describe your business as straightforward as possible. The key guideline is: "Don't tout." Save the sales pitch and just tell it like it is. You don't have to stick to a dry recitation of facts, but keep in mind that Wikivoyagers aren't fools. They'll see through flowery descriptions and effusive praise, and they won't trust it. Any of it. They'll distrust your listing, and they'll also start to distrust Wikivoyage in general, which isn't good for you or for the rest of us.
Please try and use a Wikivoyage standard listing format. Look around to see how other good listings are done, and copy their example.
What I meant by this link was to show you how the Wikivoyage Rome guide looked a couple of month ago, before a lot of people spend a lot of time cleaning everything up, so it's useful for travellers - we really don't want it to return to the same state again, as it would if we didn't monitor it carefully as we do.
But since you are quoting our policy, please notice the phrase: Even if your business fits into more than one of these sections it should be listed only once -and you have provided yourself with an answer to your question. If it bookable through your website or by calling you, it's redundant, even though it's run independently of the apartment rentals, not matter what you've written on Expedia or Tripadvisor.
And please get an account, so we can discuss this where it's relevant, which is not on Peters talk page --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 09:20, 22 April 2009 (EDT)

New US Regions Map[edit]

I think a few more things could be added to the map:

  • A few more cities: AK has 9 while MN, FL, & HI are important state w/only 1-2 cities. There's space to add Duluth, Tampa, Jacksonville, & Hilo.
  • More national parks: Everglades (FL), Big Bend (TX), Badlands/Mt.Rushmore (SD), & a couple in AK (Denali, Gates of the Arctic, &/or Wrangell St.Ellias).

Using my knowledge & not comparing exactly with a map, there seems to be quite a few mistakes on the new map.

  • Honolulu is on Oahu (it's currently in the middle of the ocean).
I realize that anyone planning on driving would buy a map, but for some reason these few jumped out at me:
  • I-10 does not go through Austin...but rather San Antonio (which is larger, so it should probably be labeled rather than Austin).
  • I-15 goes all the way to the border, it doesn't end in Helena.
  • Montreal should be further east. I-87 continues straight north to Montreal, it doesn't swing west to get to the city. For that matter, why have some routes continued into Canada, while others don't? I-87 continues to Montreal, & I-15 continues to Calgary. For that matter, why are roads in Canada & Mexico even marked? If you plan on keeping the roads in them, could you include a road through Calgary with an arrow heading north with "To Alaska" and a simmilar thing going SE from Whitehorse (AK could use a couple of roads too).

I'm probably sounding like an ass for criticizing all this, but I'm not trying to be...I'm just trying to be helpful in creating a better map (the only really important thing is Honolulu in the ocean). (WT-en) AHeneen 22:46, 31 March 2009 (EDT)

On the Talk:Munich rant, I'd have agreed with the removal if it was a new rant and it was only a rant, but it more than that — it was two years old, and the removed content included User:(WT-en) Flip666's actions taken with regard to the rant. (Another unrelated section was removed as well, probably by accident.) In that an established Wikivoyage user got involved and tried to mediate the dispute, it became a relevant piece of this site's record. Categories[edit]

Peter, what is the point of Categories when 17000+ of them are Outline Articles?(WT-en) Shep 10:49, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

Categories like "guide articles" or "star articles" are pretty straightforwardly useful, since they allow us to quickly find our best articles. The "outline articles" category isn't useful by itself, but it is nice to have the number relative to the number of usables and guides to track the development of the site—hopefully someday we will have more usables than outlines. The article statuses are useful for a couple more reasons: 1) motivating contributors to improve articles, 2) showing contributors what our standards are, and how to get an article up to those standards, and 3) helping readers understand whether they are reading a new, undeveloped article, or one that really meets the standards the site is aiming to provide. --Peter Talk 16:58, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

Rosemont[edit]

What's the rationale behind redirecting Rosemont? Though it does enormous business as the O'Hare Hotel City, it's also got two significant concert venues in the All-State Arena (aka Rosemont Horizon) and the Rosemont Theatre, and the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center is probably second only to McCormick Place on the Chicago-area convention circuit. I believe there's a push to put some casinos there, too. Что вы ещё считаете важным рассказать в разделе грамматики (я бы помог вам)? -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 05:41, 27 April 2009 (EDT)

Four axes – это просто ошибка. Информация о возвратных глаголах, не совсем нужна. Я бы считал, что больше о грамматике не нужно, так как это только разговорник, а не самоучитель. Может быть у нас уже слишком много там информаций! --Peter Talk 05:46, 27 April 2009 (EDT)

Got it, thanks! The most certain way of cleaning up nonsense is to go into the history, click on the last good version, click edit, and save. That (a hard revert) will without fail undo any changes made later than that version. --Peter Talk 17:22, 28 April 2009 (EDT)

Second attempt to contact You regarding unauthorised use of my photograph[edit]

Hi,

I requested that someone from Wikivoyage contact me to provide me information to who I have to send invoice for usage of my photograph. Photograph http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Image:Zlatibor.jpg#file is now erased from your site, but it does not relieve you from obligation to pay for several years of its usage.

As I said in my complaint, i request you to pay, because you used image without my knowledge and without my approval. By law I have every right for compensation from You.

I received no response regarding this issue. You removed image (which means you received my complaint), but that does not relieve you form obligation towards me.

Regardless you removed image from your site, i still have documentation that proves that you used it, and what period of time it was used on your site. I am not willing to protect my rights by court order unless you force me to do it. If you continue to ingore my request, then I will be forced to ask fro my rights via court that would cost you much more than fair compensation I ask for. It is best interest for You and me to settle this manner out of court.

You may contact me via my blog contact page at [5]

Predrag Supurovic

I take it you read my message for you, then.
The notion that you have a right for compensation from me is quite a bold assertion. I did not upload your photo, I had not seen your photo, I had not edited the page it was on, I do not "own" the site on which it was hosted, nor was I even aware of Wikivoyage's existence at the time it was uploaded. I do, however, welcome you to file a lawsuit against me—I'm confident you would lose said lawsuit, and I would like the legal precedent that it would set. I will be blunt, I think it very unlikely that you are going to get the compensation you are after—I really have no idea how you would be able to.
In any rate, I am sorry that your copyright was violated. It's something that Wikivoyage contributors try to prevent from happening, but given the nature of this open project, it does occasionally get by unnoticed. --Peter Talk 16:52, 28 April 2009 (EDT)

Top Level Tour problem[edit]

Hi Peter, since wikivoyage welcome business owners and my friends' agency do offer those services I don't why I can't mention them? Also some iterms have no contact information and travelers can contact the agency for those services so I think it is okay to leave the agency's contact information. What do you think? Or tell me what to do about editing the page? Thanks. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 65.49.2.157 (talkcontribs)

You have already been told why you cannot: Project:Activity listings#Tour listings. It's as simple as that (although you were violating other policies as well). If you want to discuss this further, in a serious manner, do so here. You've drummed this tired can of spam enough, and I will revert any further edits you make to this page. --Peter Talk 21:56, 28 April 2009 (EDT)

Multiple Articles Apply[edit]

Hello Peter-

I did not see your earlier post, I was confused but based on the listings requirements. We run out of all the locations I posted. We have 3 Offices in different cities and 6 camp spots that are located in each of the sections I posted. How do you manage those who have a business that expand multiple articles and sections. I was not trying to tout but based on the linking requirement and standards I was abiding by all of them. Thanks (WT-en) kwik517.

Thanks, Offices=Staging Locations. We call them offices these are the places where people check in and get fitted for there equipment. We have several outfitting locations as well as different overnight facilities where travelers stay and leave equipment. It is general to the region the Arkansas river has many attractions that don't fall into a city. It is the region. With all the locations we work out of and it is important for travelers to know, I think it is relevant to each section? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Kwik517 (talkcontribs)

Regarding the Swine Flu in the United Staes.[edit]

What's your problem pal? That MSNBC article clearly states that the European Unions top health officials have advised their population from traveling to the United States. Schools being shut down, the United States has experienced its first death attributed to swine flu, the people who are interested in traveling to the United States need to be informed that the country is currently enduring an epidemic. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 70.71.42.146 (talkcontribs)

My problem is that you are edit warring, rather than seeking consensus. I couldn't care any less about your pet project. --Peter Talk 02:13, 30 April 2009 (EDT)

"LUXEMBOURG - The top EU health official urged Europeans on Monday to postpone nonessential travel to parts of the United States and Mexico because of the swine flu virus, and Spanish health officials confirmed the first case outside North America." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30431245/ That sounds like some pretty general consensus to me. If the top EU official is advising against travel to the United States, I'd go with his word instead of yours.

See Project:Consensus. Enlighten me, what words have I offered? I await your response in hopes of learning what I think.

Tampa hotel listings[edit]

I submitted the same information for InterContinental Tampa as is included for the other hotels listed and it was deleted. Can you please let me know what was incorrect about the addition that caused it to be deleted. Thank you! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 151.193.220.29 (talkcontribs)

We don't need comprehensive lists of hotels, as we aim to be a travel guide, not a yellow pages. Most of the listings in the Tampa article are worthless, with no descriptions, no pricing information, etc., but they are what's left after I spent some good time trimming that list (it was way too long). The listing you added was not any worse than the others in the article, but it was still worthless, and I don't want to see that list grow pointlessly. The fact that Intercontinental Hotels Group is Wikivoyage's most prolific spammer, makes me extra inclined to remove listings added by their agents. If you'd like to see such a listing stay, make sure to include exact price ranges, as well as a description that does not violate Project:Don't tout (no promotional language!), and which conveys what is unique about your hotel.
In short, if your quality of your listing is better than the others in the article, it will be the least likely to get deleted. --Peter Talk 17:03, 1 May 2009 (EDT)

Ok, thanks Peter. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 151.193.220.29 (talkcontribs)

Mauritius attractions[edit]

Dear Peter,

I was very surprised to receive your second message. Please note that I fully understand and 100% agree that the first text I edited and uploaded to Wikivoyage was subjective and you had a very good reason to delete it.

With that, the second text I edited (please find it here below), is a descriptive text which refers to the attractions and excursions currently offered to visitors of Mauritius. I made sure to include all the activities currently available in Mauritius.

The main intention was to provide a full list of activities, so readers of the Wikivoyage website will have the knowledge and the freedom to choose the activities they want to do the most.

The only connection to an individual business was made in a separate section of the text, at the very end of the text, in the form of an external link.

Accordingly, I really hope you will approve this text, so it will appear on the Wikivoyage website.

If not, I will happy to receive some pointers on the required changes in order to approve it.

With best regards, Thank you in advance, Uri Cypin —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) BorninMauritius (talkcontribs)

Biggie54 response[edit]

I apologize for making you go through all that work. I realize when I went back through and read your notes that I was touting, and that was absolutely not my intention, as I just was wanting to put all the information I could in the listings. I wanted to add value to the pages. I am taking your suggestions into consideration, and will alter the language so it is not touting. Other than that, please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding any information that I add. Thank you. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Biggie54 (talkcontribs)

Hi there peter[edit]

Hi Peter,

I know it's quite late in doing this, but I wanted to apologize for the way I had acted months ago. I understand your frustration with me and appreciate your initial patience with me. I am completely sorry to have drug out a bunch of stuff around February. I know it wasn't just me, I know, but as you know it was mainly a me-you thing.

I know after the long mess that had occured, it is truly hard to forgive someone, I would probably still be furious at you, but I'm not.

Quite frankly, I think it was just a problem of you or I doing something, then the other person doing something and it escalating. You and I were just at each others throats. Sometimes I started it, others you, but you know it's crazy how much stuff happened from November to February and I don't even think I remember how the fuss between us (and other members) even started in the first place.

I want to applaud you and others for sticking to your guns so to speak. I really appreciate all the work you've done to the site - even just looking at the maps you've done - amazing work. Most of wikivoyage's articles would be much less in quality if it hadn't been for your work on Chicago. That must've taken a lot of energy. I know by doing just probably a fraction of that in Edmonton.

Anyways, what I was really wondering was if you'd forgive me, and that we can just move on. No grudges, no nothing. What is done is done.

I may pop in from time to time to edit some articles, and what not on Wikivoyage now, but don't worry I'll stay out of your hairs So to speak. Thanks for reading.

Edmontonenthusiast.

hi peter,

i noticed you took off my listing for the video strip shop in chicago's southwest side. I actually do shop for videos when traveling to keep the kids busy when we are indoors and i think its more important than the listing already showing for "western wear" and "fake puke." The shop even delivered to us which made it very easy on us. When we did go there the owner actually gave us a bunch of places to take the kids this weekend.

i did use this site while searching for things to do but noticed there isn't anything mentioned for the southwest side which we are staying. Please do add more things on here for kid oriented entertainment. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 68.78.32.184 (talkcontribs)

Pennsylvania status[edit]

Peter, Project:Region guide status says that cities only need to be outlines for the region to be usable, so why did you demote Pennsylvania to outline? (WT-en) LtPowers 16:53, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

Because I thought I had changed it! [6] I figured I had let the new requirements of usable linked city & od articles sit long enough where people agreed on them. So my mistake—please revert. I would like, though, to consider adding the proposal you made at country guide status (to make the criteria less strict) to require the more important articles to be at usable status. So for PA, Pittsburgh and Philly would definitely need to be there, which they are. Before I babble on further, it might be useful to continue this discussion at Project:Region guide status. --Peter Talk 18:38, 20 May 2009 (EDT)
I didn't know you'd proposed a change to the region status requirements. I saw it mentioned briefly in the country status discussion, but the current requirements are still what you changed them to. =) That's why I was confused. (WT-en) LtPowers 18:55, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

Far West Side[edit]

In Chicago/Far West Side, which areas were you referring to with "...to some of its more wealthy"? To the best of my knowledge, only Austin and East Garfield Park have any claim to wealth, but neither probably ranks anywhere in a list of the city's most wealthy. But I don't know that whole part of town, so perhaps I'm overlooking somewhere. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:17, 21 May 2009 (EDT)

Heh, skewed perspective + overly casual editing → that statement. Compared to K-Town, Belmont-Cragin might as well be the Hamptons, but yeah, it's solidly middle class. --Peter Talk 21:34, 21 May 2009 (EDT)
That works. I actually have family roots in Belmont-Cragin, although all I ever did there was go to holiday gatherings as a kid. I went biking around there a few weeks ago, trying to find something more to recommend it for purposes of this guide, but came up empty. Still, there are so many pretty bungalows there, and they're so cheap as well — if I could snap my fingers and make a subway appear anywhere in the city, it would be in Belmont-Cragin, for the purpose of making it a practical place to live. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:59, 21 May 2009 (EDT)
If I were the Fonz, I'd put one right over 35th & Halsted, but I know that would cause an open rebellion in the community. Per anon ips, Belmont-Central intersection is ground zero for Polish activity in Belmont-Cragin, but the only time I was there was for their great express DMV. I'm still meaning to try and figure that part of the city out, but lately Mexican regional cuisine is my priority. --Peter Talk 22:18, 21 May 2009 (EDT)

Carolina at Carolina@MedellinVacationApartments.com http://www.medellinvacationapartments.com/ —The preceding comment was added by 201.233.238.62 (talkcontribs) .

Buenas, thank you for your message. The reason is simple enough—I can't find a central office address for your company on your website, which puts it in violation of our policy on apartment rental agencies. Bear in mind that you must have a central office where renters pick up the keys, and the address for which is displayed on your website. --Peter Talk 16:25, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

Re: re Calgary[edit]

C'mon, really? I made a total of three comments on this particular issue, and that's somehow degenerating and provoking bad relations between editors? Am I not allowed to admonish other admins, even if they're provoking bad relations between editors? (WT-en) LtPowers 19:27, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

I'm hardly referring only to today's incident. But I'd really rather not go into this further, as I think it would be unnecessary and unproductive. I'll urge you again to simply back off the issue entirely, so that we can get on with the business of working together in as collegial an atmosphere as possible on travel guides, improving our content organization, etc. --Peter Talk 19:33, 23 May 2009 (EDT)
I had said all I intended to until you commented on GJ's talk page. Everything since then has been attempts at clarification. As far as I'm concerned, the Calgary issue is resolved, but if you lack confidence in my ability to administer the site, I need to correct that. (WT-en) LtPowers 19:37, 23 May 2009 (EDT)
"Admonishing" administrators for reverting unexplained content deletion (which absolutely is routine practice on this site), particularly in a case that involves a user with whom we have had so much trouble in the past, does indeed weaken my confidence in your ability to handle unwanted edits, which is the most basic role of an administrator, and pretty much the only reason we give out the privileges to begin with. Were this isolated, I'd just ignore it, but it's one of many pointless public spats—you've certainly been at odds with me in a very public, insulting, and thoroughly unnecessary way in the past, rather bizarrely assuming good faith on behalf of a user just returning from Wikivoyage's only ban, while assuming bad faith on my part, in spite of all the work I've done with you, and on the site more generally. I wish you would devote more energy to using the sysop privileges to help out with more uncontroversial and routine janitorial work, and leave this one be (as I have, for that matter).
I don't really know what else to say on this matter. I think your community interactions and work on Wikivoyage outside of this issue have been exemplary and most valuable, and it's been a personal pleasure to work with you. On just about anything but dealing with unwanted edits, I'd be happy to consult you first to tap your good insight and creative thinking. This is why I nominated you for sysop status in the first place. I think I understand your motivations here—I've tried hard—but I do think they are misguided, and I really don't approve of your handling of a situation that has (to our collective shame) become very delicate. Presumably you don't think too highly of how I've tried to handle it in the past. All fair, but for now I really would appreciate it if you just left it alone. --Peter Talk 20:19, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

Kauai Linking[edit]

Just to be clear, Kauaiexplorer.com is Kauai County's beach safety and preservation website. Kauai has the largest visitor drowning rate in the nation and this educational website is meant to inform our visitors of the inherent dangers of our beaches. Of course, nobody searches for Hawaii beach safety, so we provide some fun beach and hiking info to get people to the site. But you will find a strong safety message throughout the site, including the video with veteran lifeguard Kalani, and beach safety tips on this page,

www dot kauaiexplorer dot com/guides/beach/beach_safety.php</nowiki>

And this page about rip currents,

www dot kauaiexplorer dot com/guides/beach/rip_currents.php

So, if Kauaiexplorer dot com was not considered a guide (which you still may consider it as one) as an example, when you're talking about Polihale, could U link to this page:

www dot kauaiexplorer dot com/kauai_beaches/polihale_beach.php

Which is Kauai county's official Polihale page (the source) which tells when the beach is open (available on no other website), and has a discussion about driving to the beach in a rental car?

I'm just trying to figure out when it's appropriate to link to another site. Thanks for your help. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HawaiiFi (talkcontribs)

This site is not a primary source, and is therefore not permissible. Please read carefully Project:External links, which explains this policy. --Peter Talk 23:28, 15 June 2009 (EDT)
Umm... actually I think that last link does have a pretty good claim to being Polihale Beach's official home page? (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:53, 16 June 2009 (EDT)
The Kuaui Visitor's Bureau page for Polihale is here [7]. I don't see why you think the link above is the offical home page for the beach? I see that the website is partnered with the visitor's bureau, but that does not make it the official site. (And the about page says it was simply started by a bunch of locals.) The point is, anyway, that we want the information here, not only available offsite. --Peter Talk 13:56, 16 June 2009 (EDT)
The Kauai Visitors Bureau gives us the info to put on the page including closed and open times (which doesn't go on their page). Our page has 10 times more content then their page and is supported by the Kauai Lifeguards and Fire Department. You can call up the Kauai Visitors Bureau and ask them what is Kauai's official beach site and they will tell you kauaiexplorer.com (they link to us from their home page). And the official kauai website, kauai.gov links to kauaiexplorer.com as Kauai Beach Explorer on their main vacation page here [8]. But I'm not here to argue with you. I just don't understand why on Wikipedia's Oahu page here [9], under "Beaches", you link out to Hawaiigaga.com. If Kauaiexplorer.com is not the official Kauai beach site, then Hawaiigaga.com is definitely not the official Oahu beach site. I'm just trying to understand this better because I would like to contribute more, and want do the best job possible. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HawaiiFi (talkcontribs)
I've reinstated the KauaiExplorer link, it's sufficiently primary in my book. Hawaiigaga, on the other hand, is definitely not acceptable and has been removed. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:29, 20 June 2009 (EDT)

Manta Ecuador Article[edit]

I finished the Manta article and removed and rewritten what you suspected was what got the copyright violation tag. I also organized it to better fit with site article guidelines. It appears that much information was written by ESL persons and cleaned it up as much as possible. A lot of google searches show that other newly added information may have been copied as well. It was really hard in many cases to tell which direction information was duplicated. I believe that the edits I made will resolve any CV issues. Some of the beaches listed, I could not find reference to via google or on google maps search. I left the references in place and if anyone finds fault with them, I figure that can be dealt with at a later date. I think you will find the rewrite to be a much better version than before. Let me know if you have and recommendations for any additions or format changes. (WT-en) TomNativenewYorker 13:08, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

Hi Peter. Thanks, by the way, for the Rome/North Center change. Now, I guess, I'll have to get round to improving it!

There is a nice photo of the Bocca della Verita on Wikimedia Commons. Might look rather good at the top of Aventino-Testaccio. Assuming I CAN do this, is there a particular procedure? Or do I just save and load onto Wikivoyage?

Page deprotections[edit]

I've been looking through the logs, and my theory is that deleting and undeleting a page resets the protections. Eastern Shore[edit]

Hey, I'm the guy the worked on the Eastern Shore of Maryland page. I got tired of everyone lumping the Eastern Shore with the rest of Maryland so I decided to do something about it, haha. Since you know about Baltimore, I'm sure you understand the Eastern Shore is a completely different beast from Baltimore. The start of Dixie begins on the Eastern Shore- (WT-en) RickS

Yeah, you're doing some great work on that! Region articles usually don't get filled out very quickly, so that was really nice to see. And without a doubt, there is little in common culturally between Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. Although, there are of course crabs. (WT-en) RickS 22:57, 27 June 2009 (EDT)RickS (I hope this is right, haha)

I changed the statement on Pittsburgh in the Mid-Atlantic page because it was too boastful, subjective, and speculative. I mean "America's most livable city?", "Baltimore is far less lovely...". It was obviously written by someone from Pittsburgh who decided to take a shot at Baltimore. --(WT-en) RickS 06:05, 28 June 2009 (EDT)

It's been edited since I wrote it, but yep, it was a Baltimore lover that wrote it. I've spent very little time in Pittsburgh, but it struck me as a really attractive and laid back place totally at odds with what we tend to expect from post-industrial cities. Baltimore on the other hand, it's a city that's not often described as lovely. It's public perception, I think, is run down and dangerous (outside the Harbor). I love it though, and think there is a whole lot there to see, do, eat, drink, etc. --Peter Talk 10:26, 28 June 2009 (EDT)

Changes to car rental section of en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/East_Coast_and_Midlands[edit]

It does look like an official site, even if the link is formatted wrong. (WT-en) LtPowers 09:17, 30 June 2009 (EDT)
I restored one of the links. Adding multiple links to one site looks like spamming, which is why I hit the revert button. --Peter Talk 12:11, 30 June 2009 (EDT)
Thank you for restoring the link but there seems to be further inconsistencies in this section. There are 3 companies listed twice, once in the Dublin Airport section and again in the Dublin City Center section. I copied the formatting style of the other car rental links in the section, should the rest of these links be changed to the correct format? 12:38, 30 June 2009 (EDT)
Yes, please do. As a rule, business establishments should not be listed more than once on a page, so please feel free to remove multiple iterations. --Peter Talk 12:40, 30 June 2009 (EDT)

Black Listed[edit]

Hello Peter,

I hope you can help me because I am new to wikivoyage. I own a company that you have blacklisted. I never removed any of my competitors from the site and I just put infomation for my company under lodging with a link. I also will be adding a lot of different activities, restaurants and fun information to the Deep Creek Lake page. Please let me know what I can do to remove my self from the blacklist. I am just a small business owner that would like to promote the area. I own the company Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations. Peter also I have pictures for your Maryland Expedition.. If you like I can also help you fill in any detail that you need. Please let me know if I can you.

Thank you

Black List[edit]

Hell Peter

First Thank you for your consideration. However let me address some issuses evolving the inclusion for wikivoyage. 1st the keys are not picked up at our office because all of homes that we manage are required to have a keyless entry system. Which means the vacation does not have to wait in long check in lines to pick up thier keys. They go right from thier residence to their vacation home and not required to come to our office. 2nd our office address is 1550 deep creek drive McHenry MD 21541. It is displayed on our map of the area that we provide on our website. In fact our web cam is on top of my office show real time pictures of the lake and ski resort. I just got approved from the post office to put a post box outside my office so Iw ill be changing the address on the website very soon.

I hope you reconsider allowing me to put my website up on wikivoyage but I will not add it untill you approve. The keyless entry is for the vacation renter to make it easier for them. I will continue to add information to the site and if you like Peter I have some associates that live in Annapolis that give me pictures of landmarks for you.

Thank you again Chad

CotM[edit]

I had archived Copenhagen, but I didn't know how to give the "Result" with the numbers and stats, so I left that out. Since the other past CotMs have results listed, I thought you may think it important for this one not to be left out (although it was CotM for both May and June). (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 01:51, 7 July 2009 (EDT)

I got a little dejected with the lack of collaboration on that one ;) I think I'll take a little break from doing the statistics on the CotMs—it's nice to have them, but certainly not critical. --Peter Talk 10:12, 7 July 2009 (EDT)
Yeah, life, financial crisis, lay-offs etc. kinda blew up in my face unfortunately. Let's hope Kyoto fares better. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 10:21, 7 July 2009 (EDT)
I'm not going to lie: I actually do appreciate seeing the result listings, but I completely understand the lack of participation being rather unmotivating for you to bother taking the time to evaluate the results. A lot of work has been done on the Kyoto collaboration (despite the "task" area still having most tasks undone), but the "collaboration" part of it is rather weak, which surprises me. Most contributions have been made by me. I was thinking the lack of contibutors (especially anonymous) may be do to the fact that most people are out doing things in the summer and on the computer in the winter (with all their summer experiences to write about). (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 13:53, 8 July 2009 (EDT)
I'll be sure to tabulate the Kyoto results, since that one actually has had activity. (And I did think a bunch of other folks were carrying some of the wait, but I haven't been watching that carefully—I'll try and pitch in what I can before the month's end.) I figured the Copenhagen results would just be depressing. In any rate, if you want to do the Copenhagen stats, just go to each article in the bundle (main & districts) and go to the history to compare the first with the last edit before the cotm, and then the last edit of the cotm month (like this [10]). The revision number +1 is the total edits (in this case, 29). To get the names of the contributors just requires that you check through the month and write down their names. --Peter, whose session management failed at 14:06, 8 July 2009 (EDT)

hotel updates[edit]

I received a message from you about some recent hotel updates. I did not find the text to be "flowery" as described. I am happy to make changes to accomodate your request. Could you please send an example how you would like this completed. I will list when things are right around the corner or across the street, but not list other city attractions. The pricing for our hotels changes on a frequent basis. If entered this could be incorrect and cause controversy with customers when they try to make a booking. Web Cams[edit]

Peter, I changed the rates for the blurp on my company. May I add a section to Deep Creek Lake for web cams(do not know if there is policy forbidding them). There are alot of very nice web cams in Deep Creek lake. I do think having a webcam section of the area is very valuable especially if you have never been to Deep Creek Lake. I also would like to add some pictures of the area. I am not to sure how to add the pictures but I am going to research this in your help pages.

Romaround[edit]

Hello Peter,

I saw you deleted the listing Romaround that I added in the Florence section for tours. Also a previous listing in the Rome section of tours was deleted few weeks ago (I didn't check by who).

The service we provide with Romaround is of the same type of ArtViva or Context Florence or others that are listed on the page.

I work with my wife and a team of guides. My wife and all other guides are all officially licensed and offer a high quality service. We are based in Rome and have representatives in Florence and Venice.

Please let me know what was wrong in the listing so that it can be back on the page.

Kindest regards

We decided to get rid of the tour listings in Rome altogether, per this discussion, so you are not getting your listing back there. As for the rest of wikivoyage, our current policy can be found Wikivoyage: Activity Listings - in short unless you offer horseback (or some other value added activity) tours around Florence, or your guys are extraordinarily knowledgeable about the city, e.g. doctorated in the history of Florence, don't count on making a lasting presence here - we strive to be an open online travel guide, not a giant advertising brochure for the tourism industry I'm afraid. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:56, 27 July 2009 (EDT)

about Anacostia[edit]

Hi Peter,

I edited this article last night because so much of the information is incorrect or outdated. First and foremost, Anacostia is NOT the huge swath of neighborhoods east of the river -- it is only One neighborhood.

As such, it certainly not the most impoverished and dangerous. I am the first to admit that Anacostia is not perfect, but this is clearly written from the perspective that Anacostia is to be feared and is a novelty based on the fact that it is so jarringly different from the rest of the city.

While there might be neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River like that, the neighborhood of Anacostia is not that place. Can we work together to write a guide that is fair to the neighborhood and still interesting to read?

Thanks,

David Garber www.anacostianow.blogspot.com

Ridiculous[edit]

Relax. Since when is the word "ridiculous" considered abusive? I've got abusive language in my vocabulary but I'm not going to use it on this site. Not liking something doesn't make it wrong.

RE: LGBT travel. It may have been my fault that you misunderstood what I was trying to say; I wasn't clear enough. I suggested that morality police patrol this website (members not admins). After seeing that LGBT travel was, at one time, up for deletion. I had flashbacks of that time when people were pulling the morality card. I thought that the morality card had been pulled on BDSM travel because.... people think that what they don't like is simply not right for existing.

So the page is incomplete, fix it. Don't simply nix a page because it's incomplete, because then what you have is an incomplete and only partially-informative site.--(WT-en) GnarlyLikeWhoa 19:28, 29 July 2009 (EDT)

It was up for deletion by a troll abusing the vfd process for the sole purpose of bothering people. If I understand correctly, regular users decided to allow the process to run in order to have a solid consensus established on the talk page that we could refer to, in case anyone else tried to be obnoxious and re-vfd it.
Deleting travel topics that are uncurated and have no useful contact is standard and established practice here. There are some proposals in the works to alter that practice, but we haven't yet adopted them.
If you would like to take a shot at recreating the BDSM article, I would encourage you to do so. Just make sure not to violate the Project:Sex tourism policy—directing travelers to major (and long-term established) clubs in cities with a big scene would be fine, while directing travelers to services would not. (I tend to think that policy is a little over-inclusive, but a lot of sex tourism is exploitative, and it's a useful way of weeding that stuff out.) I certainly can't guarantee that a recreated article won't come back up in a deletion nomination, but if you do a really good job with it and avoid any policy violations, my hunch is you'll find sympathetic ears.
Regarding the comment that I removed, adding votes to the vfd page without any deletion rationale per existing policy or practice is frowned upon; I'd usually ignore that, but your comment contained no argument beyond casually belittling someone else's opinion. --Peter Talk 21:25, 29 July 2009 (EDT)
Thank you. That's better. --(WT-en) GnarlyLikeWhoa 12:19, 30 July 2009 (EDT)

Thanks Peter for the welcome and information about the 9 cities rule that I had not spotted.

I found Wikivoyage a few weeks ago and decided to make use of my wiki editing experience gained on Wikipedia. I have been checking out the places I have visited in the past to add any details that I can. I live in London and most of my family holidays in recent years have been in Northern France, so I have been adding most of my information to this area, where there was not much detail for several places. I have also sorted out the Region/Department/Cities clasification for many cites where it was inconsistant.

In some spare time recently, I have tried to fix some obvious problems with orphaned articles where the IsPartOf section or an appropriate link needed adding. I have not added links to orphaned articles for small towns which consist of only none or two lines of information or where the town appears too small compared to the other cites in the article where the link would obviously go. (Or would break the 9 cities rule).

Thanks for fixing Athens/Kifissia earlier today. I think a went a bit to far on my first attempt. It seems OK now.

Broken IsPartOf[edit]

Hello Peter, hope you can help me, I was trying to clear up some of the broken or orphaned pages in regards to isPartOf and I'd like to have a play with the api in order to help automate the task a bit, so I visited http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php and got absolutely nowhere since none of the examples seem to work, I just get empty data. They do however work on the mediawiki version here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=info&titles=Main%20Page someone has mentioned this on the Travellers Pub page earlier this year but got no response, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I'm doing wrong, do I need to login first? Tried that with the supplied url and got an error back. Anyway I was hoping either you might know what I'm doing wrong or could point me towards someone who could help.

Thanks

I'm afraid this goes over my head. The pub really is the best place to ask. Anyone and everyone who is paying attention to Wikivoyage monitors that page, so if noone responds, that unfortunately means that noone has an answer. If it was asked a full year ago, it might make sense to bump the discussion, to see if anyone newer here can answer your question. The only other place to ask would be the traveler's pub on Shared—it's possible someone from another language version might know. --Peter Talk 19:34, 30 July 2009 (EDT)

Apartments Listings[edit]

Hi Peter,

I have a question regarding Apartment listings in the Sleep section for various cities in Europe, and have been told in the past that you're the best person to ask...

I work for a company that is both an agent and an 'owner' of apartments in many European cities (we have a long term leases on at least 2 apartments in the following cities: London, Manchester, Newcastle, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Dublin, Berlin, Edinburgh & Glasgow - which effectively makes us the primary source for these apartments, not agents).

I have checked through the guidelines regarding apartment listings and we do have a physical office in the UK where we are based (with over 20 customer service reps who can be contacted by phone - not trying to 'brag' here, just emphasise that we are a physical company and not 'just another affiliate agency'). We also have a reception for each of our apartments where any complaints / suggestions can be dealt with and the keys picked up - these are within the apartments blocks, in the city specified, and can be contacted by phone directly once a booking has been made.

So, my question would be: am I allowed to post our link in those city's Sleep sections? I wouldn't go posting links in loads of related articles, just the Sleep sections. I believe I qualify to post, although I guess that depends on your taken on the meaning of the word 'office' in each location - as I say, we have a reception that handles paperwork, keys, and customers - so I would class that as an office - although I am a bit biased ;-)

Apologies for the long message, I realise your time is valuable, I just wanted to contact you first and make sure it is OK?

Best regards, james User - Citybase Apartments

Thanks! 3[edit]

Thanks for the welcome message and the resources, Peter!

I will add content to Peruvian Amazon. It is a shame for it to be so bare!

I'm learning more about Wikivoyage every day. There is so much to learn, but it is a lot of fun. I've been in San Francisco lately, and haven't had much time for contributing.

Phone numbers & policy..[edit]

Hi Peter - just continuing the discussion from Talk:Baltimore - which now isn't about Baltimore..

I don't really have that strong a position on how phone numbers should be written (although I see the sense in making it apparent what needs to be dialled locally). I do disagree with what I see as advocating a different policy on the basis of a "long standing practice" on an article talk page. Everybody should be free to ignore it, criticise it, disagree with it, but I don't feel that anyone should advocate against others following the policy on talk pages unless they are prepared to state their case on the the policy page. --(WT-en) inas 03:00, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

The policy you are referring to is an interpretation you just came up with, which noone has ever followed. In star nominations, we have required people to format U.S. phone numbers as +1 XXX XXX-XXXX. The interpretation everyone has always followed is that the area code is separate from the local number. In U.S. phone numbers, the first three digits following the country code are the area code, not the local number.
The more important thing to take away is that if you find some dusty old policy, and interpret it to mean something other than what everyone has been doing here, then you need to start a discussion to change the status quo practice. In this case, I wouldn't support your proposal for two reasons: 1) reformatting all the U.S. articles would be a waste of time, & 2) I think all articles in one country should follow the same publishing standards—having more than one phone number format in a "Wikivoyage Guide to the U.S." would look unprofessional. --Peter Talk 15:55, 20 August 2009 (EDT)
It wasn't me who came up with that interpretation, it was the other user you contradicted. I only commented after one user wanted to follow their policy interpretation, and you asked them not to. Seriously, why would I bother starting a discussion on the polocy page when they become aribitary documents with little meaning. --(WT-en) inas 17:00, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

Alaska regions[edit]

Thanks Peter for letting me know about the discussion on Alaska's regional boundaries. It doesn't really matter to me how it's done. I was just trying to contribute information. But my entry was removed because I set the sub-regions up as boroughs. I'll let someone else figure out how they want it, then maybe I'll put something in there.

Advice requested on suspected spam/touting[edit]

Hi Peter, I have noticed you seem to have been around a while, and would like your advice on an item which smells a bit like spam or touting to me. Cape Town#Do#Events City Harvest Festival does not look appropriate. Thanks for your attention Pbsouthwood 12:14, 29 August 2009 (EDT)

Peter F.'s on vacation. Good find, though, Peter S. That listing was added in April 2007 by User:(WT-en) Angelaphoenixpartnership. I see (WT-en) Evan created Talk:Cape Town/City Harvest Festival at the same time, to preserve information that she added to a project page (see Talk:Cape Town#Lost festival). A Google search indicates this person has been spamming the same description in several places on the web, although the original source is probably [19]. If the festival is still going on as an annual event (I think it was new in 2007), the entry can probably stay, but the description needs to be deleted as a possible violation of copyright (it's possible Angela is/was an official with the event but we can't know for sure). Nusa Lembongan article[edit]

Hi Peter

Please could you another look at Nusa_Lembongan. I have ploughed through and applied standard formatting now in all listing sections except Sleep mid-range, which I will do tomorrow. Can you please let me if this now closely matches the manual of style requirement of guide status aside from the one final section I have yet to do? If you could highlight parts of the article which still need "style" attention (if any) I would be very grateful.

Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 14:43, 29 August 2009 (EDT)

Please do me a favour Peter and have a quick look at Nusa_Penida now. This is a wild and relatively little known or understood location despite its proximity to major tourist centres. I started from scratch with the article as there was nothing of any use there. Any reason why this should not be a guide article now? Please bear in mind that there is little tourism infrastructure so the listings will be a bit thin by definition. Tx. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:13, 9 September 2009 (EDT)
Thanks Peter. Will attend to the Get Out section and then change status to Guide.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:28, 9 September 2009 (EDT)

SEO and talk pages[edit]

Unfortunately, Wikivoyage is configured such that search engines do index talk pages (Exhibit A: [20]) -- only the history pages are excluded. This is in sharp contrast to Wikipedia, which does not allow any talk spaces to be indexed except Wikipedia_talk.

I personally think this is a significant bug, but despite rumors and ancient legends, there doesn't actually seem to be a tech team to report it to. - (WT-en) Dguillaime 13:57, 11 September 2009 (EDT)

Ouch, that's a big problem... In a strict sense, there is a tech team who should be able to fix this, but as you've gathered, the process is a bit broken. I'd like to get you up to speed on why, but I'd rather do that privately—shoot me an email? --Peter Talk 15:19, 11 September 2009 (EDT)

cycles and segways[edit]

Well, I saw these strange two-wheeled contraptions before I knew they were called Segways and was trying to find out about them to put some info on the Rome page when lo and behold someone does it. Also, I see quite a few groups of cyclists going up and down the Appian Way so I suppose the companies are legit. Don't we need to encourage "green" tourism?

So I am not sure if I agree with you. I don't want to plug individual companies, which is why I edited the last contribution to remove all the propaganda, but don't these opportunities rate a mention? (WT-en) Shep 07:22, 16 September 2009 (EDT)

Blacklisted B&B[edit]

Dear Peter

I am sorry I seem to be a trouble maker but I realy mean no harm. The bed and breakfast is a charity run service offering quite affordable en-suite rooms in East Yorkshire and the estate is worth visiting. We keep 42 acres of gardens well maintained and do not charge - we run entirely with volunteers and donations. With your agreement maybe the bed and breakfast could be added to at least the East Yorkshire page?

Kind Regards,

Kevin

More on tours[edit]

Hello Peter,

I'm one of the former contributors to wikivoyage. Unfortunately you deleted our tours, explaining that walking tours can not be put on the Wikivoyage and besides it our tours have no value added items like helicopters or segways or bikes. So briefly our tours do not meet the requirements!! (no matter we have thematical tours such as the Jewish Heritage and the Communist walking tour. The later is the only Communist city walk in Budapest which ends at a typical Communist building where travelers can see the relics of our childhood (e.g. passports, pioneer membership book, board games, etc- which are definitely not kitches as one of the administrator was accusing us.)

Please check the PRAGUE or BARCELONA or any other city's TO DO paragraph and kindly ask you to explain why the Free Prague general walking tour or the CITYWALKS in Prague is different from our tours concerning the value they add.. I assume you read through my arguments at the Traveller's Pub page..

I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much in advance.

Magicmushroom/agnes

I removed the section altogether, as there were no tours listed that meet the criteria. --Peter Talk 12:44, 24 September 2009 (EDT)

Hey,

Have you read Orwells book the Animal Farm.. everybody is equal but some are more equal than others!! LONDON has 5 walking tours listed. General walks nothing special.I could return the question LtPowers:What exactly is the value added by going on this tour versus going by oneself and taking along a good travel guide?" Prague still has at least 3 general walking tours and another 3 pub crawls.. Again, what is the value added going on these tours versus going by oneself? You can't clink glasses on your own..?? There are at least 5 walking tours in Paris! What makes the Classical Walks of Paris different from our Free Communist Walking Tour? Or the Newparis Walking Tour by Mr. Sandman? Or the New Berlin Walking Tour Or what about the Alternative Berlin or the Insider Berlin Tour??

I am absolutely sure about a storm of indignation if you want to delete the above tours too. And if not.. than I am thinking about publishing this story to many travel sites I usually write articles about Budapest.

Please explain me at your earliest convenience.

Thank you very much in advance. I hope this time I was not too long as I was with my previous mails.

I honestly no longer understand what you are saying. Do you not see how it might be selfish to ask so much of volunteers' time, just because you are miffed that you can't boost your SEO here? I am not inclined to use up anymore of my own time consoling you because you cannot use WT for your own private business gain; I'd rather work for the public gain, by working on free travel articles for all. --Peter Talk 11:45, 25 September 2009 (EDT)

re: Edinburgh Old Town CitybaseApts Sleep Edit[edit]

Hi Peter,

I've just seen that you have removed our addition to the 'Sleep' area of Edinburgh. We spoke some time ago about adding ourselves in the correct sections of Wikipedia - I must admit that at the time I hadn't read the rules for posting and did break them - I added ourselves in every city where we advertise apartments.

However, since then I have spoken to several of your 'colleagues' and thought I had cleared up this issue. Please see http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:Dguillaime - and scroll down to 'Message for DGuillame'.

I am now being careful to only add in cities where we actually own / long term lease the apartments, so are the original supplier, and only in cities where we have an area within the apartment block for the user to pick up keys / complete paperwork etc. I also listed the cities where we are owners and have an office location. I am not listing in cities where we are only agents and not original providers.

I also stayed clear of adding listings to lots of different articles, only to the relevant sleep sections.

I also spoke to another of your colleagues (can't find it now though) who said that I should fill out my listings with actual information so they don't look spammy. I have done this, including our central office telephone number / email address, the address if the apartment building where we have the office (which is also shown on our website), and some other info such as prices.

Please can you advise?

WTP trick[edit]

I can't believe this never occurred to me as a way to get pictures where I want 'em in the printed guide. Is there a place that little tips and tricks like this for WTP editors can go? (WT-en) LtPowers 09:04, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

Not yet—aside from the WTP markup guide [21] all we have are the examples in guides like Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, etc. I'd be happy if there was one, though, since I'm also still having trouble controlling image placement when using the inline & float options. --Peter Talk 09:30, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
As a rule of thumb, I do not recommend attempting to finetune the locations of pictures, since wiki text is inherently fluid and LaTeX provides absolutely no guarantees about what goes where, so they probably won't be in the same place in the next edition. The print=inline tag is best reserved for small maps that have to go next to their text, and the <!--PRINT tag should be avoided entirely.
Incidentally, the editors@wtp mailing list is open to all editors, please don't hesitate to mail it to share tips and advice! (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:54, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
The mailing list is a good idea but it'd be nice to have an archive somewhere for reference. =) I'm not sure about Peter, but I would only use that trick to make sure my print=float images were paired up. I've got a print=split map late in the Epcot guide that was forcing two floated images to print on separate pages (one before the map and one after). I worked around it with what is probably a better image anyway, but that's what I'd use it for in the future. (WT-en) LtPowers 15:06, 13 October 2009 (EDT)

Yeah, considering the history of Svalbard, it's quite surprising we haven't had any Norwegians loudly complaining about that. And down south, the Telemark should either be a blue dot left of the T, or renamed Larvik or Sandefjord to fit with the city dot below. Hello Peter,

I live in Crystal Beach - Was there a reason for deleting it?

Thanks

Hello Peter,

Thank you for restoring my work. Yes, Crystal beach is small - yet so is England, does that mean we should just mention it in under "Europe"?

Perhaps the reason there is no other entry is because nobody has cateloged it yet. Ozona has quite a few busineses and attractions - as does Crystal Beach.

Please don't lash out at innocent bystanders while your having your pissing contest with someone else. I am sure that the majority of them would appreciate it. I would.

Bali Map Discussion[edit]

Peter, I moved the Bali Map discussion from my talk page to the image talk page: Shared:Image_talk:Bali_regions_map.png . Cheers --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:45, 21 October 2009 (EDT)

I have just uploaded my first WT style map [27]. Please have a look and make any comments (I am sure there will be some!) on the image talk page. Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:18, 23 October 2009 (EDT)
Peter. Please have a look at this one when you have a moment [28]. I have taken on board all of your advice I think (bar the patterned water.... that will come later). This one is WTP size (3009 x 1709) and I am actually quite pleased with it. Any comments very greatfully received. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:17, 24 October 2009 (EDT)
2 last questions (I promise!). Do you have a rule of thumb for how many Sleep and Eat listings should go on a small city map? It clearly cannot be all of them. And, I am a bit bemused by how to render with a pattern (eg water) in Inkscape.. is there a trick to this? Thanks again. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 06:08, 24 October 2009 (EDT)

I am looking at starting on the six Bali sub-region maps. I have looked a round a bit but I am struggling to find a reference as to what these should include, the formatting etc. I suspect there are not too many Wikivoyageised sub-region level maps yet. Any guidance you might have on the following would be appreciated and will almost certainly save time :) :

  • Roads. Should presumably follow the red and yellow format as on first level region maps? White roads to be avoided on sub-region maps?
  • Attractions. Should major attractions in the sub-region be shown on the map? And if so, in which format? Is an icon and key box required or should the attraction be shown as a blue square with a place name?

Thanks in advance as usual Peter. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:21, 30 October 2009 (EDT)

CC[edit]

Hi Peter, I sent you a copy of e-mail for tech team. If they don't move, can you give a fillip to them? -- (WT-en) Tatata 01:57, 22 October 2009 (EDT)

Sure, will do. --Peter Talk 01:59, 22 October 2009 (EDT)

Deletion of my page[edit]

Why? —The preceding comment was added by 64.12.116.204 (talkcontribs) .

I don't know to what you are referring, but since you are shouting and spamming your business contact info on my talk page, I think it fair to assume that you had created a page purely to tout for your business. Anyway, I've excised your little advert from my page as well. --Peter Talk 02:47, 23 October 2009 (EDT)

you missed my query on merging[edit]

Peter,

See the section above titled merging. Thanks (WT-en) Shep 01:05, 23 October 2009 (EDT)

Ah, sorry about that! To merge a page, I generally add a merge template ({{merge|targetpage}}) at the top of the page you propose we do away with, and then leave a note stating why on the article's talk page. If others agree, or if noone responds for a little while, then just go ahead and copypaste the relevant text, then redirect the page to the target. If the target page doesn't exist yet, then it's not really a merge, it's a move. Again, it's nice to suggest the move on the talk page before doing it, but there is no template involved. --Peter Talk 02:42, 23 October 2009 (EDT)
Shep: Out of curiosity, why do you want to merge Nuku'alofa into Tongatapu? I don't know much about Tonga, but it seems odd for the capital city not to have an article. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:50, 23 October 2009 (EDT)
Well, Tongatapu is somewhat smaller than Chicago. There are a couple of things to see on the island that are not in Nuku'alofa and a couple of places to stay that are not in Nuku'alofa but, basically, Nuku'alofa is Tongatapu. So without including Nuku'alofa the Sleep, See, Drink, etc sections would be very limited.(WT-en) Shep 11:43, 24 October 2009 (EDT)

-- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 17:43, 24 October 2009 (EDT)

Да, я был инициатором раздела, и IB владеет товарным знаком "Wikivoyage". IB купил права на товарный знак, и также серверы сайта. Все содержимое, эстественно, принадлежает участникам.
Спасибо за эту работу! --Peter Talk 18:57, 24 October 2009 (EDT)

Nusa Lembongan semi protection did not work[edit]

Hi Peter, today was a minor edit war action at NL with a persistant business owner who did not respond on my message. I tried a block for unregistered users but he was still able to edit anonymously. Would i did wrong. I now did a full protection. I read the admin handbook but somehow i feel i missed the trick... Thanks, (WT-en) jan 08:56, 26 October 2009 (EDT)

That's odd—I don't see why your original protection didn't work. I brought the level of protection back down to autoconfirmed, though, and now it appears to be working. --Peter Talk 13:52, 26 October 2009 (EDT)
Peter, yesterday night after my protection ended the edit war started again and Lt. Powers tried to reinstall the semi protection. Somehow it doesn't worked for him either. I think therefore something is not properly working. Do you have an idea? (WT-en) jan 04:54, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
Still no idea. When I instated the protection, it did appear to work—the spammer made no edits, and I also could not edit it when logged out. But if the problem persists, I'd recommend sticking to reverts and, if necessary, temp blocks. A short block of a half hour–two hours, with a block message of "Please see [[special:mytalk|your talk page]]" can be extremely effective in engaging a troublesome user. It's quite likely that the user isn't even aware of his talk page. --Peter Talk 20:15, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
Peter, thank you for the feedback. I will keep an eye on it. User Burmeseday lives in Bali and tried to contact (via e-mail not only the talk page) two rather persistant business owners on NL but they have not reacted so far... (WT-en) jan 04:34, 28 October 2009 (EDT)
Same user (202.152.172.4) is edit warring over his business listings big time now in Nusa Lembongan and Southeastern Islands. I have tried contact by email and of course via the talk page, as have Jan and Stefan. Can I perhaps suggest a short term IP block to get the user's attn? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:18, 29 October 2009 (EDT)

Bureaucrat flag on ko:[edit]

Hello Peter,

I'm going to send an e-mail to tech team today to request a bot flag on Korean version. But I'm still thinking that I should (or, should not) request a bureaucrat flag instead of a bot flag without waiting for the end of 14 days period. Do you think ko: needs speedy janitorial work? -- (WT-en) Tatata 23:10, 29 October 2009 (EDT)

Sorry. I've noticed just now that IB forwarded an e-mail to me about this. I don't know who sent the e-mail since it doesn't have the original message. Is this yours? Or Stefan? Anyway I have a bureaucrat flag on ko: now. Thanks! -- (WT-en) Tatata 23:40, 29 October 2009 (EDT)

Hello Peter,

I set sysop flag on your . Korean version has native admins now and they are good people as admin of wiki. But I think, they are still on the way to know Wikivoyage and they need your support. So please advise and encourage them.

And, although this is my personal matter, I'll go on a trip for a week in late November and will be off-line during the period. Would you take care of them if you could? Thanks in advance. -- (WT-en) Tatata7 19:31, 4 November 2009 (EST)

An assessment of Bali please :)[edit]

I would be very grateful Peter if you could give me a quick assessment of where Bali stands in respect of the long term aim of achieving star region status. In particular could you please have a look at the 6 regional articles, as you have previously identified that getting all of these to guide is where the larger aim is most likely to come unstuck. Five of the six regions now have Wikivoyageised maps which has to be good :). I have already pushed Central Bali up to guide as I think it is sufficiently developed and all three city articles beneath it are already guides. In your eyes, is that regional article the standard we should be aiming at? I do appreciate that there is lots more to be done to achieve star region status (not least on the main article itself) but I want to compartmentalise the tasks and the 6 regional articles are critical. No rush on this of course but your assessment would be hugely appreciated. Thanks. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 07:48, 6 November 2009 (EST)

Cumbria/Lake District[edit]

Can you have a look at Talk:Cumbria. You added a merge proposal to the article in July, but I am the only person to respond so far. Can you let me have your thoughts on my alternative suggestions. (WT-en) Chris1515 09:49, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Urban City Maps[edit]

I have just completed my first really Urban Map and I cannot tell you how much I admire you guys who have been churning these out for so long. That was so much work and very fiddly! Give me national parks anyday :) Admittedly, the fact that none of the PD sources even remotely agreed with each other did not help. Had to use a lot of my own experience of the Denpasar roads. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 09:06, 10 November 2009 (EST)

rome districts[edit]

Peter, you missed by query on the Rome/Talk page. Defining districts I decided to move further afield than my home of Rome/South but now run into problems in the north. I wanted to do something on Rome's mosque (Viale della Moschea). Looking at the map at Rome this is definitely in Rome/North Center but the text states that Villa Torlonia is in Rome/North when it is actually much closer to the center than is the mosque. As there isn't much in Rome/North I would recommend cutting Rome/North Center into two and moving a large chunk into Rome/North.Shep 12:40, 11 November 2009 (EST)

Advice please. Did you do the map? Could it be amended? Thanks(WT-en) Shep 16:52, 13 November 2009 (EST)

So I gave Alexandrovsk my best shot, I'm incredibly proud at the fact that I actually found the prices for the hotel! but other than that It's all looking a bit yellow pages'ly. With the gargantuan effort undertaken to even come up with basic listings for Okha and Alexandrovsk, coupled with the fact that they are barely mentioned in LP, gives me a rather clear conciousness, this is definitely one of best guides to Sakhalin out there, but I'm not sure how the others will feel judging from the harsh reactions to current nominations. Anyway some remaining issues:

  • (WT-en) Nogliki - I really have doubts on that one, as the end point of the railway, one of the 3 airports, and the home of the Nivkh cultural centre (the only thing I've basically found on this is the name) and a hotel - I'm not sure it can really be left out - on the other hand it's probably even harder to make a decent guide for this one than the other two cities. Maybe if we're two doing the effort, with one sort of speaking Russian it can be done? or do you think it's ok to leave it out?
  • Chekhov, cheers, I was rather dreading writing up on that one! :)
Wow, I simply have no idea how you pulled that one [30] off! Your start on Nogliki already looks really good to me, so I definitely think it worth including—it only has to be at usable status for the main article to reach guide status. I sure wish we could create maps for these tiny towns, but the source material just isn't there... And any translations are a cinch—I translate Russian → English at the professional level. (The reverse is not true, to which any Russian contributors who read my initial policy article translations can attest!) --Peter Talk 23:02, 13 November 2009 (EST)

Brooklyn[edit]

For the districts map of Brooklyn, what colors did you use? (WT-en) Rastapopulous 10:33, 19 November 2009 (EST)

Ah, are you adding Template:Regionlist? The way I would find out the color code is to download Inkscape [31], open it, import or copy-paste the map into it, then use the eye-dropper tool. Just hover the eye-dropper over the color in question, and then the color code will appear at the bottom of the screen. If that answer didn't help—I'll make sure to get to helping out with the new Brooklyn regions. (I would have already, if it weren't for the DoS attack.) --Peter Talk 10:42, 19 November 2009 (EST)
Peter's advice (or similar) should work in most picture editing apps if you do not want to download Inkscape. Eg in Photoshop, open the png, select the colour that you want to identify with the eye dropper and then click the foreground icon and you will get the hex# for that colour. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:47, 19 November 2009 (EST)
Also, should the page for the East be put under [[Brooklyn/East]] or [[Brooklyn/East Brooklyn]]?
There is a general disagreement on how to answer that question. I'd pick whichever you prefer. --Peter Talk 15:16, 19 November 2009 (EST)

Undo changes to Ann Arbor--you're a lifesaver[edit]

OMG! Thanks for letting me know! I can't believe what I did to the Ann Arbor article...yes, please revert those changes if possible, as I am now aware price range for restaurants is OK and no periods should be used for abbreviations of street types. I feel like a moron...and have done this in error to sooo many article pages! Oh dear!

I'm going to follow your advice and just fix the price range and abbreviation stuff, rather than undoing the entire changes that took place. Again, you're a lifesaver and appreciate the links and help!(WT-en) Zepppep 10:48, 20 November 2009 (EST)

Shroud of Turin[edit]

You deleted the Shroud of Turin link, but it is lised as the official site, and it would be of high importance to anyone wanting to see it to have the link posted. Reading over the guidelines, it does not seem to violate them. Which do you feel it violates? It's an official attraction website. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 16:03, 21 November 2009 (EST)

My goof! Thanks for catching that. --Peter Talk 17:41, 21 November 2009 (EST)

Cambodia Regions[edit]

When you have a moment please look at the Cambodia talk page where I have suggested a change to the proposed regional structure. Hotel Revert[edit]

Hey Peter - I've been trying to work with the latest hotel tout and she seems to be doing better, but you reverted this edit - any particular reason? It has prices, doesn't include a city, and avoids touting. Was this just an auto-revert, or is it actually problematic? -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 18:07, 9 December 2009 (EST)

Star nomination Bali[edit]

Hi Peter, thank you for your involvement in the star nomination debate for Bali. I had a look at the talk page Wikivoyage_talk:Star_nominations#Determining_consensus and it seems that in case there is no imediate consensus there can be a vote. I do not want to escalate that discussion (though it is rather bizarre) but so far only LtPowers objects and Peter, Burmeseday and I have done some efforts to adapt the article. When and where it would be appropriate to start that vote? (WT-en) jan 05:48, 23 December 2009 (EST)

Hi Peter! Consensus is achieved and everybody is happy. Sorry to disturb you. (WT-en) jan 11:26, 23 December 2009 (EST)

Hampstead Map[edit]

Thanks for the kind comment on this one, and I have fixed the tube station icons. I will do a zoom of the Hampstead village area at some stage but thought a full district map was more important right now.
