Guide[edit]

Since I am new here, would you please kindly explain to me how to find the ranking of a particular page?--Lucky102 (talk) 13:21, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to Wikivoyage:Article status? If so, check the bottom of the page. You can also browse Category:Guide articles, Category:Usable articles, etc. --Peter Talk 22:30, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I was hoping to nominate a few of the articles for Destination of the Month, so I wanted to know that, also, even if it is a major city, or even capital, but say it's San Marino, would that be Off the beaten path?--Lucky102 (talk) 12:39, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think San Marino would be "OtBP," but that's always a judgment call. If others disagree, they'll just say so on the nominations page ;)
The status at the bottom of the page is often wrong/outdated, too. If you want to re-assess the status of, say, a city guide, take a look at Wikivoyage:City guide status. Anyone can change the status of an article, except to star status, which requires a nomination. Wikivoyage:Previous destinations of the month also is a good place to look for examples of what's good to nominate. --Peter Talk 18:08, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure about this edit, as well as your other similar edits? This is an unused template that is still under discussion, but description is an optional template field, and the "wp" attribute is used for the (proposed) links to Wikipedia. -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:13, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Even if description is optional, I don't know why we would advertise it as such—the vast majority of listings really need it. It's not like I put a statement prohibiting its omission! I'll chime in at the wp links discussion shortly. --Peter Talk 22:16, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Why was that file deleted (on old)? --MGA73 (talk) 09:36, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is a Wikitravel logo, and we were trying to keep all of those off our site, in part out of legal concerns. --Peter Talk 18:00, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#Active self links[edit]

A report was made at Bugzilla:43660 per our discussion at the pub. Thank you···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 15:06, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you can help?[edit]

See http://wts.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Special:Undelete/Wikivoyage:Accessing_missing_projects

Do you have the user names & passwords which are needed there? --Stefan2 (talk) 23:17, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't—you'll need to reach the WV Board/tech folks (Hans, Roland, et al). If I'm not mistaken, you have their emails, which is probably the best method. --Peter Talk 05:40, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, will you please don't mind commenting here. --Saqib (talk) 18:39, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Traveler's star[edit]

Peter, thanks for this thoughtful little edit, one of the many that make Wikivoyage shine. --Rogerhc (talk) 17:22, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ha—I didn't realize I was fixing the cache issue when I did that! --Peter Talk 18:08, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding My Vagabond Inn Edits[edit]

Hello,

I would like to know why my edits have been reverted. I am not touting nearby attractions like I was earlier but just listing the amenities and services that our Vagabond Inn locations offer, so I would like to know why my listings were not kept on the WikiVoyage page. --VagabondInn (talk) 00:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's fairly straightforward—Wikivoyage is for travelers to write about their experiences and recommendations, not for business owners to advertise their services. Nothing against you or your business/employers, it's just the nature of the site. --Peter Talk 00:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can I at least create listings for the hotel with just the contact information minus the description without having the listing deleted? --VagabondInn (talk) 01:07, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there something here that's not obvious? On the face of it, it would seem reasonable to have the Vagabond Motel(s) listed. Are there too many accommodations listed in Bakersfield#Sleep already? Does Wbo need materially changing? -- Alice 02:00, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Confirmation?[edit]

Greetings! I'm en:wp:User:BradPatrick, but apparently that link isn't automatic. BradPatrick is better. Would you be so kind as to confirm me so I can add photos from Commons? I promise I won't make too much of a mess of it. Think of it as a Wikipedia Day celebration. Thanks. --BradPatrick (talk) 05:26, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brad, I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking for autoconfirmed permissions? If so, we aren't configured to be able to do that (yet)—bureaucrats cannot assign confirmed user status here. Commons files, though, can be used without having to upload them locally. --Peter Talk 05:37, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Vulpo

--Peter Talk 19:40, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
2013 (UTC)" - Vulpo[reply]
Хорошо, я буду соединить ваши записи, но сейчас special:usermerge почему-то не работает. Нам придется подождать ;) --Peter Talk 06:28, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
А сейчас сделано. --Peter Talk 19:12, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback rights[edit]

Peter. Is rollback available only to admins here, or is it available to other well-established and trusted editors, as it is at WP? I rarely use it at WP but it would be useful here today? cheers. Nurg (talk) 10:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Currently admins only, mainly due to the fairly casual requirements we have for adminship (just about any long-time user who does regular janitorial work can be given the tools to make that work easier). We don't have a separate rollbacker permission and would need a configuration change to enable it. LtPowers (talk) 13:34, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

M0zart 19:20, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Да, я могу, но сначала вам надо демонстрировать, что записи принадлежают вам, так что рекомендую подать объявления на ваших личних страницах и в Википедии и в Викитрэвеле. Скажите мне, пожалуйста, когда это сделано. --Peter Talk 19:41, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Сделал в Викитрэвеле и в Викивояж одинаковые сообщения на страницах обсуждения участника — тема: "Единая учетная запись"; сообщение: "Просьба создать единую учетную запись"; подпись: ~~~~. M0zart 20:19, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Сделано. --Peter Talk 20:30, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Спасибо :). M0zart 06:34, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Crosswiki vandal[edit]

User:John Daker is a crosswiki vandal and has been indefblocked on the English Wikipedia: see luxo:John Daker. What's the proper place to report this? --Rschen7754 20:42, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage:User ban nominations. Starting a cross-wiki section on that page would probably make sense. Or even a subpage. Thanks! --Peter Talk 20:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
User:Vituzzu locked the account on meta, but I'm leaving the ban nomination up so that the inevitable socks are covered under it and can be indefblocked by local admins. --Rschen7754 21:10, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification regarding removal of the wikilink from Twin Lights Historic Site on the Wikivoyage Sandy Hook site[edit]

Thanks for steering me to the policy on links to Wikipedia. I do, however, want to make a case for restoring the link from the "Twin Lights Historic Site" mention on the Wikivoyage site to the article on that landmark in Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article has important historical background, and good photos of this significant installation. That information is not linked form the Wikipedia article, so I believe that link is helpful. What are your thoughts on this?--Lbeaumont (talk) 22:47, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That would require a policy change. Regardless, it might be nice to bring some of the most relevant info/best photo over here. I must apologize for being abrupt and less helpful than usual—we're patrolling some 15-20x the usual amount of edits today ;) --Peter Talk 22:50, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for autopatrolled[edit]

Hope I'm reducing the workload on the patrollers. Tom Morris (talk) 00:45, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! I take it there must be a notification of some sort when I flip the switch, then? --Peter Talk 00:49, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, spotted it on Recent Changes. It might be an idea to steal some of the templates from Wikipedia for notifying users of their user rights. Template:autopatrolledgiven (probably without the big Wikipedia globe) in this case. —Tom Morris (talk) 00:51, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about leaving messages, but reconsidered—it doesn't really have any effect on the user who gets the status. If anything, we might tip off a latent vandal ;) --Peter Talk 00:52, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These are very technical flags with no real significance to anybody but the recent changes patrollers, no reason to notify the users imo. Also, I believe that one gets an email when there's a userright change performed on oneself, tho due to the known bug it will say that User:Tom Morris has been created :D Anyway, no need to make a big deal of it like some people do on enwiki, imo Snowolf How can I help? 01:03, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the trust, Peter :-) --Danapit (talk) 15:07, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Limits[edit]

Why is a list of cities limited to 9? There are more cities. Thane (talk) 22:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While every city should be listed in a region, not every city should be listed at every layer of the hierarchy (like putting every city, town, pueblo, what have you in the North America article). The number is a bit arbitrary, but we had to pick one! More at Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy and Wikivoyage:Avoid long lists. --Peter Talk 22:57, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Can you toss Shalin_Raj? That shouldn't be up there any longer than it needs to be... (see history) --Rschen7754 06:58, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --Peter Talk 06:59, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chile[edit]

Hi Peter, thanks for your message. I prefer to answer here to make it easier for you ;)

I suppose we talked with the same journalist, so I tried to explain that to him. Anyway, I'm not sure of why Chile doesn't have the history from JAMGuides. I think that's probably because there was a "Chile" article at the Incubator, so when Spanish Wikivoyage was approved as official, all the content from the Incubator was moved to the official site. When the JAMGuides articles were imported, probably there was a duplicate in the "Chile" case so it wasn't imported; "Chicago" wasn't created on the Incubator so the JAMGuides article was imported.

Also, I think most of the articles from JAMGuides that only included the section's headers were deleted so probably that's why the number of Chilean articles decreased so much. --B1mbo (talk) 23:31, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks—I'll try and answer his question from my general knowledge, then. --Peter Talk 23:32, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, I have been flicking through the edit histories in the Asia article trying to work out if there is a pattern to the recent editing there and if there is an IP or user that might need some 'assistance' with MoS and guidelines. Have you seen a pattern? I did not have much time to go through it last night and only did a quick read through and tidy up. I have returned to find that article seems to have developed magnetic qualities of some kind. Clearly it will need some ongoing attention. The Destinations seem to be particularly troublesome, and there is some enthusiasm to promote Indonesian and Indian destinations with some zeal. Let me know if there is anything you have noted that needs looking out for. -- cheers Felix (talk) 05:13, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which user? I actually haven't been too on top of the continent articles. Since we can't coordinate patrolling very well (Bugzilla:43977), I've been focusing on monitoring less watched pages. Asia needs additional attention from an experienced hand though—the content of the various sections is underdeveloped, which looks bad on an article linked from the main page! --Peter Talk 05:20, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That Asia article seems to be getting a bit of a slamming about by some keen editing. I am feeling a bit clumsy here at the moment as I have no patrol/patrolled markers on the Recent Changes, my own Watchlist or the (diff) pages and whilst that was of no particular concern when things were a bit quieter it now the heat is now back on and this situation leaves me potentially re-patrolling an article unnecessarily, or at least skewing my priorities in Patrolling activity through being blind. Also I cannot mark an article so have resorted to adding something like "quick overview of post migration edits" to the edit notes. This is a bit like patrolling without a flashlight. What can be done to remedy this? -- cheers Felix (talk) 18:49, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is frustrating. We have requested the addition of a patroller user group that would have patrol and rollback rights, but that Bugzilla request has gone unaddressed. I'll happily nominate you for an admin now, though—if you would accept. --Peter Talk 18:51, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It also presumably means that all my edits are not auto-patrolled and are flashing up as work for others to do rather than appearing as work done. Hopefully most of the likely RE Patrollers already know who I am but still it creates extra work just needing to think about it. If you wish to nominate me I would of course be humbly honoured.-- cheers Felix (talk) 19:04, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've already marked you autopatrolled ;) --Peter Talk 19:10, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good work Peter, that will at least spare some others here of unnecessary patrolling activities. __ cheers Felix (talk) 11:43, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Photo hunt[edit]

I have replaced a few when I can Waterford is a recent example. Can't always find a replacement I'm comfortable substituting. 86.45.191.101 04:54, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for supporting my bot. I noticed before that on previous "BRFA"s you flagged the bots when counting your vote as the second vote, could you do that as well for RileyBot or is more discussion needed? :) -- Cheers, Riley 09:02, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder ;) I've flagged it, and second the 6-hour interval suggestion. --Peter Talk 09:05, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now running (checks every 6 hours) - Thanks for your speedy reply and kindness. :) -- Cheers, Riley 09:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Quick question: Is there an orphan template (see enwiki's template (here) on wikivoyage?) If so, what do you think about a bot running through all orphaned pages and adding a template? (I would obviously file a new BRFA asking more opinions if you feel this could benefit) I am mainly asking your opinion on this because I feel that placing a template on a lonely page is a much more immediate way of alerting users to a problem than relying on a page in the "special" namespace. :) -- Cheers, Riley 10:03, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that would be useful. --Peter Talk 10:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find a template (looked through Wikivoyage:Template index) for this purpose so I am going to create the template and follow the proposal instructions at Wikivoyage:Using Mediawiki templates. Thanks for your opinion. -- Cheers, Riley 10:15, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Capt Obvious deletion of over 1 KB of content at United States of America[edit]

I have reverted you because I believe that that was an improper use of the Capt. Obvious policy. I think it's faulty to assume that everybody in the whole wide world knows what a burger, a hot dog or ice cream are. Furthermore, Capt. Obvious seems to be more about health and safety tips rather than food. Perhaps you can explain why Capt. Obvious applies in the discussion I've started on the talk page, because I think it pretty clearly doesn't Purplebackpack89 20:02, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please carefully read Wikivoyage:Consensus. Edit warring will lead to blocks. --Peter Talk 20:03, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to jump in, but I think this user's edits have been in good faith, and there may just be a misunderstanding here. I agree that the information in the US article is obvious, but there isn't anything worth blocking over at this point. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:10, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone familiar enough with English to be reading our guides will know what "ice cream" is. We cannot and should not define every word that might be unfamiliar to the non-fluent. LtPowers (talk) 20:30, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

For the auto thingy - cheers sats (talk) 02:23, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User account migration[edit]

Why did you remove my request on January 18? Was there anything wrong with it? --LA2 (talk) 12:30, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here is an edit from 2005 that identifies the Wikitravel user:LA2 to be the same as user:LA2 on Wikipedia. Is that not enough? I thought I followed the instructions when I made my request, and was much surprised that it was removed without telling me. --LA2 (talk) 12:43, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. As you may have guessed, the reason was lack of a pointer towards that evidence. We had a ton of requests without any information given to confirm identities, and I figured the quickest way to make the problem clear was to just remove the entries, and keep the ones that were done correctly as examples of how it should be done. I have now performed the merge. --Peter Talk 18:25, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The ton of requests were apparently the result of users following the given instructions. Just click here, to submit your request. Did so. --LA2 (talk) 10:10, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for merging the accounts and moving my old user page back to its real name. Now, could you also unlock it, please? --LA2 (talk) 10:15, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's not correct, on the same page it explained that you need to cross-verify your accounts. I've since tried to make that more clear. Anyway, done. --Peter Talk 19:37, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Importing a template from Wikipedia?[edit]

Hello Peter, do you have importer permissions yet, as discussed on the Traveler's Pub?

If so, could you import Template:Archive_box from Wikipedia for use on talk pages? Thanks and regards, —Quintucket (talk) 21:05, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've done that. Would you please let me know what else might need to be imported for it to work properly.
Also, please note that we do way less archiving here than Wikipedia, and tend to leave talk pages long to make them easy to search for relevant information. --Peter Talk 21:13, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Does this new template serve any purpose that the existing Template:Archive does not? LtPowers (talk) 21:24, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't realize we had that. Quintucket, could you respond here? I'm inclined to delete. --Peter Talk 21:27, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead. Sorry about that. I hadn't realized that Template:Archive existed; I simply looked for counterparts to the Wikipedia one. —Quintucket (talk) 21:29, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not your fault; for some reason, Template:Archive is not listed at Wikivoyage:Template index. LtPowers (talk) 22:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That page is kind of hard to keep up-to-date. Especially if we expand the use of templates, we should consider organizing them with categories, I think. --Peter Talk 22:13, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I wanted to apologize again. By way of explanation: I'm the kind of person who's easily rattled by profound, rapid change. I do have uncertainties about what direction Wikivoyage may take in the future—I suspect we all do—but in rereading my comments, they were ridiculously overblown, they represented an extremely selective memory of recent discussions, and they were easily interpretable as a personal attack (though, again, they were not intended as such).

None of that is any excuse, though. As I said, I have immense respect for you, and I'm grateful for the help you've given me, i.e. in perusing the Buffalo district articles. Again, I'm sorry.

-- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 02:20, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey no worries, I've said some profoundly crazy things here in the past that yours can't even compare too ;) I'm a huge fan of "taking back" stuff, although wikis can sometimes make it hard to do. Hopefully no one will complain about the removal! --Peter Talk 02:23, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

I have sent you an email. --Rschen7754 07:09, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maps on user page[edit]

I see you have some interesting maps of where you've traveled on your user page. How did you make those? (I'm hoping it wasn't colored in by hand). Thanks Nerfer (talk) 00:21, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, no, I got the blank maps from File:World98.svg and File:Jewish population in the USA in 2000.svg. Since they are in SVG format, they're pretty easy to edit quickly using Inkscape. The time consuming part was just figuring out exactly where I had been, but that was really fun—a trip down a lot of memory lanes! --Peter Talk 00:25, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Move[edit]

The more I watch recent changes the more I see some quite amazing bits and pieces - watching a steward with nothing on talk or user page block a user - it sure suggests the migration/move must have a few long timers in culture shock a bit... sats (talk) 01:20, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ha! He did so on my CU request, though—so at least this old-timer knows what's going on ;) The first time I saw stewards pop up and perform blocks and even more so oversight (which is something we've never done), I was pretty confused, though. --Peter Talk 01:28, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can understand that - I had to welcome him for that ... sats (talk) 01:33, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Commons cat temp[edit]

Hi Peter. I wonder if there's any plan to bring this template to WV: {{Commons category}}? I would think that travelers would be interested in seeing a collection of images of a prospective destination, beyond the few images that fit into an article. INeverCry 23:47, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We've actually displayed this in a different way, and I think our links (courtesy of one of our bots) are now pretty comprehensive and up-to-date. From any destination guide, you should see a Commons link in the sidebar under "Related sites" (by the link to Wikipedia). --Peter Talk 23:51, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response. That's actually a bit better than the temp, especially with long articles, where you can just look directly to the left rather than scrolling to the bottom. INeverCry 23:59, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's why I like it that way. The disadvantage is that it's not very eye-catching. I've been thinking of ways to improve the sidebar, and I think icons could help a lot (WP and Commons icons would be obvious additions). I'll bring that up on the MW message page. --Peter Talk 00:01, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can't log in with SUL info[edit]

Apparently I'm supposed to ask a local bureaucrat personally about this sort of change (as opposed to using, say, Wikivoyage:User account migration). Instead of going into great detail here, please see w:en:User:Dcljr/sandbox for my request and, at the same time, proof that I (User:Dcljr) really want this done. - (anon edit) 05:42, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

And we'd like to have you here! I'm not sure of how to help, but have asked a few people. A reminder that I'm still new to the Wikimedia world. Did someone refer you to a local bureaucrat (and hopefully mention what they're supposed to do)? --Peter Talk 05:51, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

usernames[edit]

check recent changes - havent the faintest what the established tradition here is with weird (probably unmanageable) user names - elsewhere would just zap it - not sure what you would do...

Sorry from me—I've been unexpectedly offline this weekend. What do you mean by weird/unmanageable user names? --Peter Talk 08:00, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No need to apologise - no problems - my roaming recent changes for welcomes I came across a user name that was ridiculously long, and for some reason I cannot get back to the recent changes of 2 days ago to get the example... it would have been about 08:00 UTC on 26th January - and the name was like 4 or 5 names joined together... I can imagine there hasnt been a user name policy apart from offensive or otherwise, I just wasnt sure whether longer names are an issue within the technical side of things... -cheers sats (talk) 08:15, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Found it - (User creation log); 02:11 . . User account Hurbert826baldwin265shandra145 (talk | contribs) was created ‎ - I wouldnt welcome that sort of user name in a million years, so to speak - also I suspect I am seeing socks being created - they are so similar in name structure... sats (talk) 09:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How do other wikis handle this type of situation? --Peter Talk 22:59, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about not getting back, I am not sure that developing an idea for wikivoyage by comparing others would necessarily be the best way to create one - the decidedly different logics in some aspects of the wikivoyage entering into editing process clearly needs some careful nurturing into an 'easy' entrance for prospective editors. That is not to say that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Usernames is not a very useful measuring stick in principle.

I suspect that anything that ties into inter-wiki compatability is as important as anything. For some reason my trying to access my search page in meta has fouled up, but if meta-wiki has policy I suspect that should be a default to consider. The bad ones as identified in wp.en I think need to be one worth considering here, but with carefull observation so far there has been a very low level of stupid names that need to be blocked on site during my recent changes experience. Sorry it doesnt answer your question completely, but... sats (talk) 10:09, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Boxes[edit]

Thank you for the welcome! It's nice to be back!

I have a (stupid) question. On my Userpage at the bottom, I was trying to create a box to feature some of the best listings on the Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots per the talk page discussion, but I don't know what to type to make it end. What do I type in order to do that? ChubbyWimbus (talk) 13:32, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If I understood the question right, I think you just needed a tag to close the table. I have inserted one. I also removed your ugly yellow boxes—if you want to keep them, by all means, add them back ;) --Peter Talk 14:12, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help! I knew it had to be something simple but I've never made one myself before. The Cherry Blossom article is a bit of a mess now, but I'm hoping to fill in the content and then ask for feedback. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 01:01, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Invalid Requests[edit]

Greetings! I made a request to merge accounts which you removed. I think the problem was that I assumed you just wanted my username on WT and my username on WV. I didn't realize you wanted the pre-munged version here already. I just figured this out and I submitted a new request.

Anyway, if you are going to remove what appear to be good faith requests, I think you should really let the people who made those requests know! In my case, I was requesting two identical usernames be merged so I think it should have clear, to someone like you who understands this process, that I must have been confused.

In any case, I have spent ten days what was happening to my account. Even a little impersonal form message would be useful. Thanks for all your help on WikiVoyage! I'm really happy to see so much work and so many wonderful contributions to the site! —mako 00:39, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mako, you still actually need to provide confirmation that you are the same person—please log on to WT and make some sort of gesture to demonstrate this, then I can confirm your identity. I'm sorry about the lack of a notice. We were just slammed with work post-launch when the banners went up on all Wikimedia sites. The large quantity of requests that either didn't make sense or were just unfulfillable were overwhelming that page, obscuring its purpose. I figured the most efficient, if not the most ideal, way of getting peoples' attention would be to basically start over, keep the page free of bad examples of requests, and to put up those yellow caution boxes you can now see all over both pages. --Peter Talk 01:26, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Peter! I appreciate all the hard work you're putting into this and I appreciate that the transition is a ton of work. I've tried to post evidence on the page now. Sorry about being so poor at following the directions! —mako 00:13, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah good, it looks like this is done now. --Peter Talk 19:58, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

Hi Peter. I occasionally patrol the RC in the down-time when both Americans and Europeans are sleeping (and Australians are awake). I find it would be much easier if I were to use the one-click rollback button, as described at w:Wikipedia:Rollback. I haven't seen other users using it though, so it it even enabled here? If not, it may be something worth looking into. JamesA >talk 14:25, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At this time it is only available to administrators, stewards, and global rollbackers.--Jasper Deng (talk) 18:10, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're probably not seeing it used much because it isn't actually that useful, aside from quickly reverting vandalism across multiple articles. Rollbacks also don't allow for edit summaries, which are usually wanted to inform the person whose edits are being undone. --Peter Talk 18:18, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you want a JavaScript form of rollback, you can insert the first four lines of code on m:User:Snowolf/How to globally TWINKLE into your common.js file. (If you follow the directions on that page, you can actually get it on all WMF wikis too). --Rschen7754 09:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the responses, everyone. I understand rollback doesn't allow edit summaries, but these are largely unnecessary when a user is deliberately and blatantly vandalising an article. Undo is still necessary for newbie mistakes. Either way, I'll try out your recommendation, Rschen. Thanks for the tip. JamesA >talk 09:17, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Failed admin request[edit]

Is there any provision for closing a admin nomination early when it's clear that the request will not pass? So far Curtaintoad's nomination has 9 opposes, and it would be less humiliating than having it close with 18 opposes. There have also been some concerns about wasting the community's time. --Rschen7754 09:10, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New functions[edit]

Hi Peter! I have found such text on some news site: Peter Fitzgerald, another administrator on Wikivoyage, says, "Some of the plans we have involve new and more interactive ways for contributors to review businesses. New features planned by our community will allow trusted users to mark listings as accurate and up-to-date, all users will be able to up-vote or down-vote based on their experiences, and users will be able to write personalized reviews linked to listings a la Tripadvisor. The other major feature that we are planning is the addition of interactive maps based on Open Street Map, customized to suit our guides and plot our listings." Where can I read more about development of these functions? Thank you. Voll (talk) 20:52, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We're still at the conceptual stage, so no development has taken place yet. There is a bit of discussion regarding the reviews idea here, and I'm hoping we will eventually start coordinating work at Wikivoyage:Roadmap. Are you interested in any particular planned feature development? --Peter Talk 23:01, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Image Question[edit]

I am currently working up an outline for the Daniel Boone National forest in Kentucky. I have decided to model it after the Kentucky page and break the forest down into ranger districts. I have found an image on the Forest Service website that shows the ranger districts and would like to use it. After reading through the image and copyright policies, I am not sure if I can use it or how to go about securing permission. Would you be able to discuss this with me or point me in the right direction? Thanks. Schwaltz (talk)

Is it the U.S. Forest Service? If so, it's probably fine as a work of the Federal Government—all of which are in the Public Domain. Do you have a link to the photo? --Peter Talk 19:47, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, It is the U.S. Forest Service. Here is the link to the page http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/dbnf/recreation/?cid=fsbdev3_032668 and I think this one is directly to the image http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_MEDIA/stelprdb5340546.png Schwaltz (talk)
That should be fine. I recommend Commons:Special:UploadWizard to upload it. Just make it clear that it is Public Domain as a work of the U.S. Federal Government, and provide a link to the webpage where you got it. --Peter Talk 19:56, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CSS For New Main Page[edit]

Hi! Thanks very much for all your help so far with the Main Page proposal. I was just wondering if you could try out this CSS code for me. As I'm not an admin I can't try it out myself and I think the current CSS code conflicts with it when I try it out on my own page. If it works as hoped, it should make the images (including the map) scale with the window of the browser and retain the correct placement of the image-map. If it doesn't work, would you mind then reverting the code to its current form and I'll have another play. Thanks! :) --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 22:42, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize—do you still need me to do this, or has someone else already (it's been a busy day). Where should I paste it? --Peter Talk 07:07, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much - scaling on that page should now be sorted! :) --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 21:15, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Peter. I just saw your comment on the Pub calling for help. Did you want to go ahead and create a properly formatted IdeaLab proposal? Although I'm not sure whether it is the right place to apply, considering we have no cost estimations nor any idea of who/what to contact to implement the features. But there's no harm in trying, and from the looks of the list of proposals, the response has been lukewarm.

If we wanted to apply with the two, possibly three, proposals, the place is here. I think it's worth mentioning that the ideas are not set in stone, but there is general support among the Wikivoyage community, linking back to our local discussions. We can discuss specifics later if the IdeaLab team is interested. I'm only concerned about due dates, as our application needs to be in within a week.

On a totally different note, I think it is time to implement Contact -> Connect. I believe we can just use the same methodology that we did with Get out. JamesA >talk 07:50, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I absolutely want to go ahead with this. If you'd like to get started on IdeaLab (which is a completely unfamiliar site to me), I'll join in tomorrow. We don't have much yet on the map end, so it's probably best that we just focus on the listings popup and review popup/interface.
LtPowers is the man for xterm -> yterm replacements ;) But yes, I also think it's time. --Peter Talk 07:55, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the very late response, but if there's anything I can do to assist, I'd be more than happy to. As you know, I'm still quite new here, but I'd be very happy to throw myself into anything. --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 13:28, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I made the proposal for the editing interface a few days ago at meta:Grants:IEG/Listing_editor_for_Wikivoyage. Applications are due tomorrow, so I added lots of content today, but upon reading the next section, I really don't think this will work for us. You need specific information about budget, a development roadmap, which developers are going to build it, etc. We pretty much just want the WMF people to do it, and keep the money for themselves. Instead of wasting what I've done so far, I might just propose it and see what happens. Please contribute if you like. JamesA >talk 01:39, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Progress[edit]

Hi! I just wanted to ask you what you think the next step for the main page proposal is. I'm just slightly worried that it's rapidly losing momentum. If I'm completely honest,, I don't think we're going to manage to get a carousel going unfortunately, though I'll continue to try. It looks like we'll need JavaScript if we do use one and that's a complete anathema to me! Perhaps once we sort out the tricky issue that is colour of the bottom boxes, perhaps we can start thinking about the next steps? Thanks! (PS You don't happen to know any JavaScript whizzes?) --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 00:00, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good question, honestly. I think what's left is a) making sure we don't have problems with mobile readers, b) if possible, implement something carousely to reduce the need for scrolling, c) fix up the boxes at the bottom, and d) make sure the coding is OK? I put a question mark on the last one, because I'm very much a non-tech guy, and can't evaluate potential problems that the coding might cause in different browsers, devices, etc. I'm putting up a visualization of what I think it would ideally look like at Talk:Main Page New. Hopefully you and others can comment on whether it's actually doable! --Peter Talk 04:48, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to ask you to do this again but would you mind copying my CSS into the common file again? Thanks!
Done. --Peter Talk 23:44, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question[edit]

I have a question about administration, and in particular about patrolling, whose answer I can't find in the relevant article. I figure it's better to ask it somewhere where it's likely to be read and answered fairly quickly, as opposed to Wikivoyage talk:Recent changes patrol.

The article says to mark useful edits as patrolled, but on the subject of problem edits it only says to edit out vandalism, spam, etc., and to make any useful information conform to the MOS. My question is: once problem edits have been corrected, do we then go back and mark the original edit as patrolled, or do we leave it as is?

-- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 06:19, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I usually mark them as patrolled right before correcting them. So, looking at a diff page, you can hit the "mark as patrolled" link, and then edit the page. Also, the rollback tool automatically marks any reverted edits as patrolled. I hope that answers your question ;) --Peter Talk 06:23, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed it does, thanks. :)
Another question that I can't find the answer to anywhere else, with apologies if I'm annoying you at this point: As an admin, am I authorized to grant users autopatroller status? If so, how is that done? User:Challenger_l has done a bang-up job on Oakland, and I see no reason why he wouldn't deserve a place on the mantel of trusted users.

Tourist Office[edit]

Hi there! Would you mind just casting your eye over this mock-up that I've made for the 'Tourist Office' concept? I was just thinking that it's quite a nice idea and would be a shame if it were to die. I've tried to whip up some further interest, but to no avail - I don't suppose you have any ideas? Thanks as well for all your support with the New Main Page, I really appreciate it! :) --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 23:58, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I like it, but I think I like this one more. This was something I figured we would have up and running weeks ago. I wouldn't bother trying to whip up more interest, since there seems to be plenty of support for the idea (despite uncertainty about the name), but rather just go ahead and move it into the project namespace, and start advertising it as publicly as possible. I'll happily add a link in the sitenotice.
I caught the discussion about discussions that die and never go anywhere, and will respond to that too. I think the problem isn't so much with the discussion process, but that enthusiasm dies somewhere along the way, or wasn't there to start with! Ultimately, reading a consensus as best as you can and then plunging forward with the change is usually the best way to get things done. --Peter Talk 00:07, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! I've created the page here, so a link in the sitenotice would be fantastic! I wasn't sure whether it was the content or the style on mine that you disliked, so I've carried the colours across to the new page, if it was those that you disliked (or both style and content!) just let me know and I'll sort it out! Thanks for the help and support! (PS - you wouldn't happen to know how to remove the [edit] button?) --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 11:46, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer calmer colors more along the lines of our usual blue and grays (I'll take a stab at it). I suppressed the edit button—hopefully the one you meant, and have added a link in the SiteNotice. Here's to hoping that this takes off! --Peter Talk 17:23, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! I'll calm the colours down a bit - they are a bit drastic at present! Fingers crossed! --Nicholasjf21 (talk) 17:26, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Prince George's County[edit]

Actually, the principle from Wikivoyage:Avoid_long_lists is independent of whether the articles exist. "Long lists and large groups of items can be difficult to grasp." If these articles *were* created, I think we could subdivide the county (possibly north/south of Rte. 50, or inside/outside Beltway). Since they haven't been created (I put some of those links there in 2007), I would argue that having them on the list isn't useful to the traveler. I'm not worried about orphaning non-existent articles. --Jonboy (talk) 22:57, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's not right—take a look at Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy#Dividing geographical units: This doesn't need to be applied stringently to the lowest level of the hierarchy; if a region has more than nine cities in it, and there's no helpful way to divide it into subregions then don't split it. The new Avoid long lists page doesn't include that bit, but it's a key part of our geographical hierarchy. --Peter Talk 01:40, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Would it make sense, however, to divide the cities list itself on the region page along the lines I describe (North/South, Inside/Outside Beltway)? I still think the long list is unpleasant, even if I concede it doesn't make sense to subdivide further. --Jonboy (talk) 03:06, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, absolutely. I've done the same for Montgomery County (along with a lot of other semi-experimental stuff), which has 13 cities/towns/whatever. --Peter Talk 03:30, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the US-50 division you used makes perfect sense. --Peter Talk 23:07, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Somehow I think a bigger thanks is owed in your direction ;) --Peter Talk 19:43, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Haha! You're very kind! :) On an unrelated note, do you think I'm alright to implement this now? I've got an SVG ready, so it should all work - we just need some variants! --Nick (talk) 19:48, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it seemed like there was plenty of support for it. Personally, I don't think variants are needed—if someone did something really special, having one shiny barnstar to award makes it simple and doesn't discriminate between the types of work done on our site. That's just my feeling, though. --Peter Talk 19:50, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I agree with you! I thought some people might want variants, but I'm very happy to keep it clean and simple with a single icon. I'll get to work! :) --Nick (talk) 19:53, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, lately i spent some time in Khasab and it is really pity to see how this article was killed by the migration of the pictures. I tried to completely makeover both the Musandam and Khasab article. I'm lacking a good map. The OSM material is not helpful and even google maps is rather poor. Do you have an idea where to find a basis for a good map? I would like to develop an OtBP for the winter 13/14. Thanks, jan (talk) 14:22, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it looks like OSM's coverage of the town is very incomplete. I don't see what is wrong with Google Maps' coverage, although it doesn't matter too much, since we can't use their data. Nothing on Commons and no CIA maps either. I tried to check available PD satellite images using Nasa World Wind, but I'm having trouble getting the image layers to download for some reason. Maybe you would like to try using that program? The layers we can trace from are listed at Wikivoyage:How to draw a map#Acquire a base image. It's usually not high-res enough outside the U.S., but it's worth a try. --Peter Talk 20:01, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Peter, thank you for your reply. I searched the above section, too. Sadly the NASA maps are not so helpful as well. It seems that only bing [8] from Microsoft has a real good map of the region. I read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Maps that Bing maps uses OSM but i fear that this still doesn't bring it in line with our copyleft policy? Regards, jan (talk) 20:27, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Bing re-uses some OSM content, but most of its content is non-free—it's safe to assume we can't use it for Khasab. --Peter Talk 20:29, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The best I think you can do would be to use the OSM map as a starting point, and then draw free-hand whatever streets you think are essential to include, without directly copying them from another source. That won't make for an extremely accurate map, but it's better than nothing! --Peter Talk 20:31, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sierra Leone map[edit]

Hi Peter - I won't be able to start the map until next week. If you can get to it earlier, go ahead. I'll continue to work on the ToC in my spare time. -Shaundd (talk) 01:47, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, have you started working on that map? Let me know. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:26, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just finished. --Peter Talk 21:28, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! I've updated bot it:voy & en:voy pages. Please check the last one if it's in accord to en policy/taste. --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:18, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

West Wales- a definition[edit]

Peter - your approach would work better except that definitions of West Wales often (but certainly not always) include Ceredigion which is here included within Mid Wales. The differentiation of Wales into regions has always drawn different reactions. My own patch which is the Brecon Beacons national park is described by people living here as being variously (in parts at least) in South Wales, Mid Wales and West Wales and straddling the various borders - and the lines they would draw on the map of Wales would each be different! There is no one right answer of course! cheers Geopersona (talk) 18:41, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, understood. That wasn't clear in either of our versions ;) --Peter Talk 18:42, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Polar bears[edit]

Hey Peter, thanks for uploading the polar bear pics. It's tough to pick one. And thanks for doing the Sierra Leone map. I was away for the weekend and had some other things taking up my time, so I couldn't get to it as soon as I thought I would. -Shaundd (talk) 04:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, can you please restore this template or at-least provide me the content of the file. I want to tag it with experimental template. --Saqib (talk) 12:22, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I've moved it to your userspace. I would recommend, instead of using {{experimental}} that you discuss what changes you are looking for at Template talk:Archive, since we really should only have one archive template (unless I'm misunderstanding something). --Peter Talk 14:41, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please delete it again. I was thinking of creating Template:Archive box here and I thought Template:Archive box is that same. --Saqib (talk) 15:13, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Admin nomination[edit]

Hi Peter - I was going to close the nomination for User:SatuSuro, but there is still an outstanding oppose (actually "wait") vote from you. Can you comment on Wikivoyage:Administrator nominations#User:SatuSuro as to whether you still oppose the nomination, and if not flip the bits? Thanks. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:57, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well... my opinion hasn't really changed (and I think Cacahuate had the same), and wait really is a nicer way of saying oppose. I think Satsuro is clearly an asset to Wikivoyage, I want him working here, and imagine he could make a fine admin. But I'd really like to see a record of patrolling, cleaning up per the Wikivoyage:Manual of style, and participation in policy discussions, vfds, etc. before supporting an admin nomination. I think the nomination was and still is premature, and nominations of potentially good candidates concern me because a slushed nomination could turn them off to further work here. Do you have any advice for me? --Peter Talk 14:42, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I read the "wait" comment as "let's leave this nomination open for a bit and see what happens", and I think others may have as well, so if you could just clarify that it's really an oppose vote (and still is) then that would be helpful. Per your comment and User talk:Cacahuate#Admin nomination it sounds like the best thing to do may be to close the nomination for now as a failed nomination. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:09, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that I have deliberately not withdrawn my application in the same spirit that I self nominated - I wanted to see how things would be working in the processes in place - quite a lot came out there that doesnt normally get aired at nominations - that in itself seemed important at the time. As to a failed nomination, I think that is academic - the procedures have been tidied up, and I am still editing here. I may have misinterprested some of the comments at the nomination, but all in all I really think it as a succesful nomination - in the way that I interpret the outcome. If, and if some editor takes it upon themselves to close the nomination as a failed one, then I suspect that is a misreading of the issues aired and the actual conversations that ensued at the nomination. And a careful reading imho suggests that the voting and the ebb and flow of the comments suggest that it is in fact a successful nomination. Whether I eventually become an admin here (or not) is irrelevent when it all washes up - there is a vast amount of content that needs fixing up, tools or no tools. I suspect in the end voting is as much as it is at wp en - it can take a very very careful read as to whether some editors change their mind over time, and their change of mind is not easy to tally when they discuss further. sats (talk) 04:18, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On another topic, I don't see why he couldn't be assigned patroller. --Rschen7754 05:21, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To sats, administrator nominations are not done by voting—virtually everything is determined on Wikivoyage via Wikivoyage:Consensus. Even how we define consensus is a little idiosyncratic, but that article does a decent enough job of explaining, hopefully. There are two oppose votes from admins, the objections of which are explained and not unreasonable, and this does mean that the nomination failed (there are outstanding objections). --Peter Talk 22:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK - thats fine - thanks for the explanation sats (talk) 00:29, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vienna banners[edit]

Hey, we must have uploaded banners for Vienna at almost the same time! I really like the one for Vienna, but was wondering if we should change the style up a bit for the Vienna/Innere Stadt. I've posted a couple of alternatives in the talk section. Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 04:34, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks for keeping the tables up to date! -Shaundd (talk) 04:37, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's one of the dangers in the Banner expedition. Would a sign up like we have for the regions map expedition work? Or is it less worth worrying about (since it takes less work to make a banner than a map)? --Peter Talk 17:19, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I had thought about creating a sign-up sheet like the one for the regions map expedition, but was very tired after creating the expedition page and the progress tables, and just wanted to get going. On the other hand, we don't seem to be running into each other too much (other than Vienna) and like you said, banners don't take as long as maps. It's probably also not a bad thing if we have choices for banners sometimes, it is the most prominent thing people will see on the page. -Shaundd (talk) 04:08, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

I've replied - the first one appears to have failed so I resent it just now. --Rschen7754 03:39, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That email address might be failing (not sure why). Could you resend to one of my other accounts (I think you have them). --Peter Talk 19:53, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Going through my inbox, don't think I do. --Rschen7754 20:22, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Extension:Widgets proposal[edit]

Hi Peter,

Thanks for starting the small poll, responses seem positive, do you plan to send the request soon? As I suggest at the Pub, the request could be simplified by allowing Gadget edition rights directly to admins. JamesA seems to agree on that. The Gadget namespace only needs to be edited when installing a new gadget, which should be extremely rare.

Widget is known for being unsecure if edited in a wrong way (arbitrary client-side HTML injection), so Mediawiki might refuse. It might reassure them if we promise to not use the notoriously insecure Iframe widget, and only use VoyageMap instead.

Cheers! Nicolas1981 (talk) 03:49, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you would do the honors, I'd be quite grateful—I'm going to be very busy for the next week or so. --Peter Talk 06:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:-[edit]

Hey, Peter: You created "Template:-" a few years ago as a "test", but I'm not sure it's still necessary. What do you think? LtPowers (talk) 14:09, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it can be deleted, if you are willing to remove it from the 100+ articles it's used in ;) --Peter Talk 19:53, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat request - name change[edit]

Hi Peter, could I please ask a favor? I recently changed my cross-project login name, but seem to have accidentally auto-created an account here (which I'm currently using to write this message). Could you please "usurp" it and rename my old account from User:Hex to User:Scott Martin? Many thanks for your help. Scott Martin (talk) 10:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, this should now be done. Let me know if you need any further assistance. --Peter Talk 15:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Much obliged. Scott Martin (talk) 18:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, i hope you are doing fine. You nomiated JB in September for OtBP. I tried to improve the article over time but as Felix kindly said, there are shorter yellow pages for major city than the restaurant and hotel listings than these JB sections. Felix and i will try to improve but without a major drive, your nomination will fail within the next weeks. Could you help a bit? Otherwise i would slush the nomination by the end of May. Regards, jan (talk) 11:55, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take another look, but I'm less concerned about its length, since it is an undistricted city of 1.5 million people. The eat and sleep listings mostly look well and thoughtfully written, so it would be hard to reduce the lists without having more knowledge of the place. --Peter Talk 15:22, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my account migration[edit]

I am indeed the same person as Wikitravel's Rastapopulous, but I can't seem to log into that old account. I tried to retrieve the password via email as it says there's no email on file for me. You said to log into WT--did you literally mean log into Wikitravel, which bans links to here? Rastapopulous (talk) 14:50, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, to WT itself. You don't have to mention our site—just some reference to your being the same person elsewhere. --Peter Talk 15:10, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Rastapopulous (talk) 15:16, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Map problem[edit]

At Talk:Northern_Lights#Article_status you wrote "Wikivoyagifying the maps would be nice, and that's something I can certainly help with."

The map at Shanghai#Districts is one I stole from WP; the URL is on the talk page somewhere. It sort of works, but it is far too large and my attempts to adjust the size with obvious things like just adding a "400px" fail miserably. I know almost nothing about graphics in general or maps in particular and have no idea how to fix this. On the other hand, I have written text and added some articles to match that map's division of the city (reasons on talk page) and really do not want to revert to another map.

Is this something you could help with? Pashley (talk) 16:41, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be more than happy to help with a Shanghai districts map—it would be a good education for me, since I really don't know anything about its geography! To get the file manageable, though, I'll need to figure out some new software, so no guarantees on just how quickly I'll get it done. --Peter Talk 19:44, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I was just thinking about how you'd like to see more blue in the font of the logo I've been tweaking - is a light blue or dark blue the sort of thing you mean? --Nick talk 16:05, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not really sure—I certainly trust you to play around with it and come up with something attractive. The obvious thing to try first would be the same color as our current Lenka, which matches the text color we use for titles on our maps. --Peter Talk 16:30, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good thinking - that is a nice idea! --Nick talk 16:50, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Blue of the current Lenka text
Thanks very much for all the support with this! Here's a blue text version - what do you make of it? I rather like it! --Nick talk 17:01, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that looks pretty great! Could we see the text in Cyrillic? They use the name Викигид. --Peter Talk 17:04, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cyrillic
Here you go! :) --Nick talk 17:38, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I've changed the logos back to grey because LtPowers suggested it looked a little close to the colours of another wiki-based travel site and I didn't want us to get in trouble, but if you've got any other ideas for what we can do with the text, just let me know. :) --Nick talk 10:57, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PS I don't suppose you could advise me as to how I could make a decent SVG of the proposed logo? I've got Inkscape, but I'm not particularly proficient! --Nick talk 19:44, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can take care of that for you. I'm very busy this weekend, so I'll get to it in the week. --Peter Talk 19:51, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be fantastic! Thank you very much - it's very kind of you! :) --Nick talk 20:26, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Non-commercial[edit]

Hey Peter, thanks for letting me know. Aw, that shucks. I did read the policy, but must have got the wrong impression. I did just do a bit of research as to why that would be the case, as I assumed that because Wikivoyage is a non-commercial, free site (unlike Wikitravel) such things would be allowed. However, we would want to allow a potential printing of Wikivoyage guides in the future by a commercial business, a bit like Wikitravel Press, and it would cause severe headaches if the site was littered with non-commercial content. So yes, I understand now, and the policy should be updated with a similar sort of reasoning so that other people can understand too =) I'll keep trying to contact those Flickr users to release their images, of which everyone who has responded has so far. The issue is if they're still active enough on Flickr to check their messages. James Atalk 06:44, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone asks why we don't allow non-commercial content, feel free to plagiarize content from an email I sent someone with the same question awhile ago:
The relevant Wikipedia policy is here. The Wikimedia Foundation resolution on licensing is here [9], the first point of which explains that only content that meets the Definition of Free Cultural Works [10] can be used on Wikimedia projects (with a few narrow exceptions that wouldn't apply in this case).
The most common examples of re-use of Wikimedia content include commercially produced textbooks, repackaged content in the form of DVDs and other media that wouldn't be practical to distribute without charging a fee, commercial apps for PCs and mobile devices that repackage the content, etc. Other important re-users who are harmed by the Creative Commons non-commercial license include (in the words of the Wikimedia Foundation deputy director) "small publications like weblogs, advertising-funded radio stations, or local newspapers." Allowing content with non-commercial restrictions could also prevent the Wikimedia Foundation from one day entering into partnerships with for-profit entities. There is a fairly good essay about this written by a user here.
Some examples of commercial re-use that would be particularly relevant for us are print-outs by hostels, local tour guides (for things like maps in particular), visitor centers, etc. --Peter Talk 06:58, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
James, may I ask whether it was Wikivoyage:Copyleft or Wikivoyage:Non-free content that you found unclear? And I could ask you to please raise any issues you might have on the talk page of the respective policy? Thanks! LtPowers (talk) 14:36, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Powers. It was the latter that I read and thought gave permission for non-commercial images to be hosted locally. Rereading it now, rather than a specific wording on the page, I think it was more of an absence of a clear statement saying non-commercial images are disallowed. James Atalk 10:01, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well it does say that only the copyrighted artwork/architecture may be "non-free"; the rest of the image must be freely licensed. So perhaps the problem is a lack of definition of "free" in the context of WMF licensing? If you could raise this issue on the talk page, we could work to get this problem solved pretty quickly I think. LtPowers (talk) 01:58, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

The Wikivoyage Barncompass
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to Wikivoyage. Your expertise and enthusiasm help make this project a success; it's appreciated by all. LtPowers (talk) 18:45, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey thanks! And right back atcha ;) --Peter Talk 20:20, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Again, you seem to reject everything you don't agree with[edit]

This bloody-minded resistance to any style that you happen to want is getting tiresome. When you revert, you MUST provide a reason in the edit-summary.

I'm forming the view that you are one of the worst influences on this site. Tony (talk) 09:42, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You might try discussing contentious changes rather than simply repeating them in different variations, forcing us to revert you. The less often we have to revert, the more likely we are to take the time to write an edit summary. LtPowers (talk) 17:19, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not forcing anyone to revert. How silly. And you are the other person on this site who has troublesome ownership issues. It's very disappointing to see. Tony (talk) 12:22, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tony, you contribute nothing other than to say that you will not respect Wikivoyage policies on punctuation and spelling, encourage others to do the same, and then edit war over said inane style issues. That's possibly the most banal, uncreative trolling I've encountered in the past seven years of being an administrator. It's fair to assume this is the reason for reverts from me or others, unless an edit summary notes otherwise. --Peter Talk 16:22, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It should also be said that both Peter and LtPowers are some of the very best influences on this site. They both put huge volumes of time and effort into this project and neither has ever asserted or intimated any ownership of any part of it. It is however, a testament to their dedication that so many of Wikivoyage's best features have involved them at some point. The Barncompass posted for Peter just above this topic is absolutely right to commend him on his great work here; I'm only sorry that it wasn't me who posted it.
I understand that you have grievances with some of the ways in which things are done on here, but if you want to see them changed the sort of unpleasantries above will not garner you any support. Yes, there is a natural status quo bias, but if your arguments are compelling and civil, they will be heard. --Nick talk 17:33, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay, you gave him one in March. LtPowers (talk) 23:38, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops - I didn't notice! --Nick talk 23:43, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • What I see above is a clubby, ownership-obsessed attitude, full of arrogance—oh, and that one of your friends gave you a medal above really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things; I could easily find people to paste them on my talk page. Yet you're accusing me of incivility. This is becoming a problem. "you contribute nothing"—do you tell lies like that to other editors who challenge your unexplained reverts? Tony (talk) 01:46, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, I've only ever directed the "you contribute nothing" quote to you. If you are being earnest, I would encourage you to consider Wikivoyage's goal: to create a free, complete, up-to-date and reliable worldwide travel guide. If you want to contribute your knowledge about travel, that would be awesome—start with some favorite restaurants in your hometown, maybe, or mention a hostel where you had a memorable experience, or write about a little known attraction that you uncovered somewhere way off the beaten path. If, however, you are just looking for a punctuation issues debating society, you are not in the right place (in more than one way), so please take your Wikipedia–battle-tested methodology and jargon of antagonism, and leave. --Peter Talk 05:19, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You have a nerve telling me to look up my local restaurants. Why don't you leave if you intend to continue the ownership syndrome. I will specialise in what aspects of Wikivoyage I please, as anyone can. You do not own this WMF site, and I think it would be best if you left. Seriously. Tony (talk) 05:40, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is not the English Wikipedia, and you can't expect every Wikimedia site to be run that way, including Meta, and the English Wikinews. While I agree that the English Wikinews has serious management issues, I think that your campaign against that project was highly inappropriate, and your campaign here is bordering on disruptive as well. Please, learn how other projects work before expecting them to bend to the English Wikipedia Way(TM). --Rschen7754 06:07, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad to hear that you acknowledge the serious management issues at en.WN (I've been called "shithead" for my troubles, earlier this year—it's amazing this type of abuse continues unchecked). But it's not only management there; the whole model is problematic—at least to those who have thought it through. That is, of course, only my opinion. Now, on your use of the word "campaign" ... I've conducted a campaign for seven years to make WMF sites more professional. I'm not going to apologise for that: the reforms and improvements I and others have forged have made a substantive difference over the years. Sometimes it requires persistence—even dogged persistence—to ensure that a project is pliable, flexible, to change. They are, after all, wikis; what could be more pliable?

I'd much rather work with you than against you on this site. Telling me to leave is going to make me more likely to stay. Your experience and institutional memory are clearly valuable, but I'm finding you to be predictably resistant to any kind of systemic change—and we're only talking about style here, not even policy. It would be good to know that you're willing to embrace more change, after years of being under the mantle of those corporate raiders. Now en.WV exists within a huge infrastructure, and it's not realistic to think that this critical transition won't be accompanied by moves to evolve, to fine-tune. Can we work together more amicably? Tony (talk) 06:17, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not going to speak for Peter here, but I do want to add on to what Rschen said. A lot of our policy is developed and implemented by consensus, which is usually a slow process. It ensnares most of our suggestions, including those from Peter. From what I've seen, the objections are not necessarily resistance to change, but because Wikivoyage emphasizes different things than Wikipedia (e.g., consistency within a region and not just a single article), or because our focus is on creating travel content (a stylistically proper travel guide doesn't seem much use if it's largely incomplete or inaccurate). We do things differently, hopefully some common ground can be reached because I agree style is important. But you're just going to piss people off if you denigrate respected users and make style changes without conclusion to the policy discussion. Calling Peter one of the worst influences on the site is as ridiculous and charged as someone calling you one of the worst influences on style standards at English Wikipedia. But, as I said earlier, hopefully we can find some common ground and move on. -Shaundd (talk) 07:07, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tony1, as a FA writer on the English Wikipedia I can confidently say that you have made a lot of positive contributions to the Manual of Style over there. But the problem is that all Wikimedia wikis operate by consensus. When you're told "no" by the majority, you try and steamroll over them and get your way, and become quite rude in the process. That is why you have been indefinitely blocked from the French Wikipedia, and have multiple blocks on other wikis - because you make suggestions, and for whatever reason the suggestions aren't popular, and then you refuse to drop the stick and keep beating the dead horse and throwing rocks at the people trying to intervene. Sometimes, you have to learn to take "no" for an answer - the "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" attitude has gotten many an editor in trouble.
Frankly, I'm not qualified to comment on the specific style matters at hand, but what I can comment on is conduct issues, and on consensus, and those are what are the overriding factors here. --Rschen7754 07:21, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should waste time on this. The level of arrogance is way too high to be tolerated. --Alexander (talk) 07:28, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Atsirlin shows just how corrupt the clubby atmosphere has become. Or maybe you're referring to the arrogance of other people here. Brushing editors off because they want to improve a project should not be met by "we should not waste time on this". You can go elsewhere and let others who care about standards do their work.

Now, Rschen, since you want to play dirty and mention site blocks, I'll need to defend myself by declaring that the French thing was done after I left the site, having complied with a directive. Gee, that's fair, isn't it. So before you try to smear me, get your facts right. What are these multiple blocks on other WPs? More smearing? Which ones ... you seem to want to discuss details, but Brian McNeil's blocking doesn't really count, does it (he's the one responsible for the "shithead" comment).

Rschen, before you comment on conduct issues, look at your own conduct. Tony (talk) 08:54, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • Blocks for doing the exact same thing on other wikis are certainly relevant (and obviously that does not count en.wikinews). And I'm not trying to brush you off; brushing you off would be blocking you immediately. My suggestion would be to make a proposal, and then accept whatever the community decides on the matter. --Rschen7754 09:02, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Perhaps it would be service if you were blocked immediately. Tony (talk) 09:03, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Throwing around comments like that does not help the matter. If you want to block Rschen, provide some reasoning (which I believe there is none). Wikis are built on consensus, collaboration and reasoning. I'd hope that everyone on this page can move on and start (or rather, continue) writing good travel guides. James Atalk 09:58, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
        • If people stop the group attack, I'll stop rebutting. It would be nice to collaborate, but the group hostility (dysfunctional, IMO) is very apparent, and personalised. It makes this community seem inward-looking, xenophobic, unwelcoming, and resistant to its set ways. Tony (talk) 10:03, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
          • I tried to help, but it seems you won't listen. Have a good day. --Rschen7754 11:34, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An unwelcoming wiki community does not gather more editors; it is lucky if it can maintain its existing ones. Yet we do indeed gain new editors, fairly regularly, both before and after the WMF move (more after, to be sure). The vast majority of these editors have been welcomed gratefully as they apply their passion and expertise to improve the site. Those few who have not, perhaps, been welcomed as warmly may be well served to take an objective look at what the differences might be, and at who is responsible for those differences. Map Northern Lights[edit]

Peter, without wanting to be pushy, did you have a chance to ask at the Alaskan GI about the maps license? I think the maps are actually the last things missing before we nominate Northern lights for star. Danapit (talk) 12:44, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ack, I keep forgetting about this. I really need to remember to call them when they're awake, but I only ever think of this in the morning EST... I'll try harder this week ;) --Peter Talk 16:25, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thx! ;) Danapit (talk) 16:43, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter. I noticed you had quite a bit of input in that discussion in regard to changing our external link format. A few weeks have passed, and everyone who has commented there is in support. I just wanted to confirm you do not hold any more reservations and are happy to see the new format implemented. All the best, James Atalk 14:02, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, let's go! --Peter Talk 17:50, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Slow on the uptake[edit]

Back from travels (sic) for a bit, will begin editing again soon - thanks for the headsup at my talk, hope to come good soon, just nice to be in ones own house again after a topsy turvy sort of time... cheers sats (talk) 08:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User preferences[edit]

Genuine question: why are you so opposed to readers choosing their own thumbnail display size as evidenced here? --90.215.245.164 09:27, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not, but as you are fully aware, we are awaiting a technical solution to the problem of default thumbnails, and our current policy remains as it always has been. If you continue edit warring, using sockpuppets, and trying to create drama/be disruptive, all your accounts will eventually be blocked. --Peter Talk 17:05, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And by the way, I would suggest tread super carefully on any political edits regarding Northern Ireland, given your history which got you permanently banned from Wikipedia. --Peter Talk 17:19, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)
1) I am certainly not "fully aware" of any problem whatsoever with regard to "default thumbnails". What problem do you mean exactly?
Right now, with a default thumbnail size of 220 px on all Wikimedia projects (including the English language Wikivoyage) for those who are not logged in (like myself, for example) "upright=1.3" will display a thumbnail at 286 px so just why do think it worth annoying new editors off and re-introducing spelling mistakes and out of date information by abusing the undo button to change this to a hard wired 300 px? If I use "upright=1.36363637" would that placate your desire to have all thumbnails display at a width of exactly 300 px for the majority of readers while allowing those registered users who have made an effort to set a different preference to have those preferences honoured?
2) Our current policy remains outdated compared to other Wikimedia projects precisely because you abused the undo button: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Wikivoyage%3AHow_to_add_an_image&diff=2315287&oldid=2315002
3) I'm an anonymous IP address. How can I be using sockpuppets? Please stop scattering unfounded allegations. Which accounts precisely do you believe I am simultaneously (ab)using?
4) How dare you allege "edit warring". It's me that has been doing the substantive editing and you that has been abusing the undo button. Here's a classic example: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=County_Kerry&diff=2317792&oldid=2317547 where you re-introduce the front-linking style of hyperlinking external links that others have pointed out is deprecated by the current xl policy in your eagerness to achieve your desire to have all thumbnails display at a width of exactly 300 px. --90.215.245.164 17:45, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you![edit]

(Image width set to be 1.36363637 times the user's thumbnail width preference)
Logged in users who have not changed their thumbnail width preference and readers who have not logged in will see this image displayed at a width of c. 300 px while the default remains 220 px (and as you prefer Peterfitzgerald)

I have a natural aversion to both bullies and threats.

Your belligerent and baseless allegations will force me to surrender a degree of anonymity. I now have precisely ONE registered account on Wikivoyage

Ip90-215-245-164 (talk) 19:02, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see there are distinctive advantages to registering an account in terms of spreading WikiLove. --90.215.245.164 19:17, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which was your exact same response on Wikitravel after having your Frank and Alice accounts blocked, create an account for an ip [11]. You are being so blatantly obvious this time around, that I wonder whether you are testing to see how green new admins might be, or if you are just plumbing the depths of our collective stupidity. But it seems more likely that you are ready to get caught, having gotten bored with softer, long-term trolling towards a laid-back bunch of travel enthusiasts. --Peter Talk 02:35, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seychelles[edit]

Hi, you deleted my edit of the Seychelles article citing link policy. However, there was no link in the text, just reference to a website that is actually very useful to travellers and perfectly applicable to the subject matter. I would like to restore the info, but am curious as to what elements you most strongly object to so that perhaps i can adapt it. Cheers Natataek (talk) 08:16, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited it a bit, removing the .com element and updated the info for ferries as it was very old (some operators no longer exist and other routes have been expanded). Hope it is satisfactory now. If not, let me know and we can discuss in what ways to customize it. Natataek (talk) 11:54, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Colour codes?[edit]

I copied some ideas from your table at Talk:Shanghai in creating this one: Wikivoyage:World_cities/Large. However, I do not know what colour codes to use for Guide or Star, or even where that would be documented. Can you advise me? Pashley (talk) 16:35, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pashley, what about light green for guide and green for star status articles? --Saqib (talk) 17:00, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would make sense, but I do not know if there is a convention already established or what hexadecimal codes are required to implement either your suggestion or whatever would fit convention. Pashley (talk) 17:11, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I made up my own simple scheme at WV:Brazil Expedition using Red (non-existant), OrangeRed (stub), Orange (outline), Yellow (usable), PaleGreen (guide), and LimeGreen (star). Texugo (talk) 17:24, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have applied those. Thanks. Pashley (talk) 18:18, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

District titles[edit]

Hi Peter, one question. I've deduced that exist a sort of rule for the district pages that force them to be: "city/district", but I haven't found it. Could you advice me?

Furthermore, I was curios about the reason behind choice. Why to use this syntax instead of the classic wiki one (e.g. district (city)) or a more verbose one (e.g. "district of city" or similar...) that is longer but it could be used directly in the wikilink instead of applying a label all the time?

Let me know, --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:50, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just found the rule (i.e. Wikivoyage:Naming conventions#Districts) now I just miss the reason. Have you got any idea? --Andyrom75 (talk) 18:35, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I actually don't know the answer to this question. I guess it works (since a district is always a sub-article of a huge city, and nothing else), and we're used to it, so we'll keep using it, but I can't find the actual reason why we started doing this in the first place—Perhaps Evan did it, and no one brought up objections. --Peter Talk 18:33, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank anyway Peter, I'll try to ask him although it's a rule born 10 years ago and I don't know if he recall it. --Andyrom75 (talk) 21:59, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are these still things we intend to import? Texugo (talk) 15:39, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the List of Wikivoyage-specific vocabulary should be merged with Wikivoyage:Jargon. The former was on Shared, of course, so that's why they developed independently. LtPowers (talk) 16:20, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The pub still needs to be imported, but the XML file is larger than the size limits imposed by the WMF. I don't know how to get around this. --Peter Talk 18:35, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Astons-Apartments[edit]

Hi, I don't have a strong opinion about this but I understood that before allowing apartment listings there should be a discussion on talk page. There wasn't, that's why I deleted that listing. Jjtkk (talk) 08:58, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

True, but the Aston-Apartments are rentals in name only—it's just a hotel spread out through three buildings, with "apartment style" rooms. They are rented according to nightly rates and have daily maid service. --Peter Talk 15:07, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You got message (on it:voy)[edit]

Please give me a feedback on my understanding than I'll reply on lounge. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 17:26, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I just wanted to say thanks again for vectorising the proposed logo - it was really kind of you! I've now submitted it for consideration (here), so now we just have to wait and see. I'm going to be away from my computer for the next few weeks, so I won't be able to edit any images, but I'll have my phone so I can still read and write! :)

Thanks again, Nick talk

es: Report[edit]

Hi Peter. If you have the time, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what I wrote at meta:Wikivoyage/Summit#es. Texugo (talk) 13:05, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Peter,

i saw today your comment on Musandam. It was not intention to alienate you. I justed wanted to say that -as far as i know- the only option today would be a hand drawn map. I was looking for options as Musandam is up this year for OtBP this year. Hopefully you understood my intention to summarise your points and not to use it against you. btw: Thank you that you started to proof reading Travemünde. Regards, jan (talk) 13:10, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I just wanted to be clear that I'm not in the business of suggesting shady map appropriation ;) I think the only option is a combination of OSM's map + hand drawn additions. I think that the OSM coverage seems fine for a Peninsula overview map, actually. Also, now that I'm looking at the OSM coverage for Khasab and Dibba, it actually looks pretty good. Has it improved recently? Is it good enough now for maps? If OSM is good enough now, we could make the maps: a region map for the peninsula, and maybe geocoded dynamic maps for Khasab and Dibba. --Peter Talk 19:25, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Peter, seems that there are some improvements but how get i rid of the arabic descriptions on OSM? Its ruining the map. I tried to start with geocoding in Khasab but it is not perfect. Dibba is easier because it is so small but thats the place i only spent a couple of hours, so it is difficult to know the exact locations.jan (talk) 20:00, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing we can do about the Arabic on dynamic maps. If I make a region map, though, I can use English only. --Peter Talk 20:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

reused banner images[edit]

Hey Peter, I appreciate you finding that the banner for horse riding had already been used, but how did you figure it out? I'm trying not to repeat images but I've done so many page banners that I'm losing track of what I've used. Do you have a program for finding repeats? thanks Lumpytrout (talk) 23:40, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have replied on your talk page. --Peter Talk 06:57, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kazan[edit]

Hi Peter! It is nice to hear that you want to work on the Kazan article. However, i) its Russian version is incomplete; and ii) I have some rough, quick translations (mostly the listings) that I did during my travels but never uploaded to Wikivoyage. I should probably put some effort into publishing them before you start, so that we don't spend time on the same thing. --Alexander (talk) 17:36, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Now the translations are published, so you are most welcome to plunge forward with the rest of the text and correct my bad English. I did not plan to introduce districts in the English article, but of course we can copy them as well. --Alexander (talk) 18:35, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I would like to introduce the districts here too, since with translations there will be enough content. While districts maybe are not necessary, they on their own do convey a lot of useful information to travelers. And I have yet to see bad English from you—and you certainly could not say the same of my Russian ;) --Peter Talk 07:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ElectAbuzzzz[edit]

Hi, Peter. Please have a look at ElectAbuzzzz's latest post to my talk page when you have a chance. Thanks a lot!

Virgin Gorda[edit]

I haven't been to Virgin Gorda yet. I've been cleaning up the page and adding new entries as I plan my trip, and I plan on continuing to add entries as I discover more about the island. However, until I complete my trip, I don't think I'd be too helpful in writing a good lede/intros at this time. Nevertheless, I'd definitely be interesting in helping upgrade the page to star status upon my return (provided I have a good time)! Alvanson (talk) 03:03, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, hope you have a good trip! The Baths is one of my favorite beaches in the world, probably because I'm a sucker for clambering on boulders ;) --Peter Talk 03:27, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Geocoding might be a good idea as the "old" way of making maps seems quite labour intensive. How did you place everything on the map in the first place? Experience/satellite imagery or do you have some coordinates already? Alvanson (talk) 21:46, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I can't remember! Satellite imagery is probably most likely, but I do remember that I got some help (from someone who knew the island well) with the listings I wasn't sure about. --Peter Talk 21:54, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm up for some geocoding. While there doesn't seem to be anything in OpenStreetMap, between the existing map, satellite imagery, Google Maps and the Wikimapia link in your archives, I could probably get most of the entries geocoded. However, before I get started, do you have any existing coordinates? Alvanson (talk) 22:10, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing yet, no—by all means go ahead ;) --Peter Talk 22:13, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Check it out! I would also like to update the map but I'm not allowed to overwrite the original SVG in the Commons. How can I overwrite the old map? Alvanson (talk) 03:20, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! I added some experimental-ish dynamic maps gunk so we could get all the listings on a slippy map. You can reach it via the geo icon at the top, but I also put one right into the article, so it's easy to compare to the old static map. (There are some instructive differences for the Wikivoyage:Dynamic maps Expedition to look at, so I hope you don't mind keeping that clumsy looking juxtaposition in there, while we debate how to make the dynamic map better.) To overwrite, did you use the "upload a new version of this file" link at the bottom of commons:File:Virgin Gorda map.svg#File history? --Peter Talk 04:12, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There's no "upload a new version of this file" link on the page you referenced. Instead I get "You cannot overwrite this file." Alvanson (talk) 04:18, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably stupid, but just to double check, you are logged in there, right? If so, then I don't know what's going on! Maybe you need to have autoconfirmed status there, or something like that. --Peter Talk 04:26, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Logged in, still can't upload a new version. Never did anything on Commons, so I'm probably not autoconfirmed. Alvanson (talk) 04:32, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's the reason, then. It looks like you created (automatically) your account there just this evening, so waiting four days seems silly. If you upload it here (ignore the scary warnings), I'll download it, and upload it there (poke me when it's ready). You could just upload it under a new name, but it would be nice to preserve the file history as it has changed. --Peter Talk 04:36, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, but I had to put it here: [12]. Alvanson (talk) 04:45, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Which changes did you make (so I can make an accurate edit summary on Commons)? --Peter Talk 04:48, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it looks like you made some font changes. Do you mind if I switch them back for the time being? The DejaVu Sans Bold Condensed font is readable at very small sizes, and I wanted to show that contrast with the clumsy big icons on the dynamic map. Otherwise I'd be all for letting you experiment. --Peter Talk 04:52, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean to make any font changes, not sure why that happened. Please revert them back to the original intended font. Alvanson (talk) 05:00, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Eat: removed The Flying Iguana; Drink: added The Bath and Turtle, CocoMaya; Sleep: renumbered Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda Village; all listings renumbered accordingly. Minor location updates based on latest geocoding exercise. Alvanson (talk) 05:00, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I'll take care of this tonight (after sorting out an obscure archiving mess). --Peter Talk 05:01, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And done! --Peter Talk 06:25, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I've marked Virgin Gorda as having Star potential and included a task list of sorts on the talk page. -- Alvanson (talk) 02:25, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Pashley (talk) 14:40, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to close the VfD discussions on Lyman, Barbagia, Reinheim, Liliw, Taolagnaro, La Trinité and Sykia with a resolution of speedily kept. The nominator's deletion rationale for the articles had no basis in policy, and I voted speedy keep on all of them. The original nominator voted "redirect or delete" on all of them, but again, his votes had no basis in policy. Meanwhile, my "speedy keep" votes were cast roughly a week ago, with no further votes after that point.

(And, come to think of it, does a vote cast by the nominator him- or herself really count? Doesn't the very act of nominating an article imply a vote of "delete", given that articles can be redirected and/or merged without being VfD'ed, and nominating an article for deletion then voting "keep" would make absolutely no sense? And if a nomination equals a vote to delete, given "guilty until proven innocent" wouldn't we technically have to delete all nominees?)

Given the fact that my recent history on vfd has been checkered, and given the fact that an argument could be made that we technically don't have a consensus to speedy keep, I wanted to check with another admin before I moved forward with this. Frankly, I find the excessive clutter on the VfD page slightly annoying. :)

-- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 03:51, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's fair to archive those now. If you'd prefer to not be both the keep voter and the action taker, I'll do them tonight. I see your point about voting on your own "nomination," but I think I've probably done that too many times myself, when I think something should be deleted, but don't really know ;) --Peter Talk 05:39, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, as long as I have this conversation as cover if I need it, I'll go ahead and do them in a few minutes. :) -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 06:02, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you miss the question. --Andyrom75 (talk) 09:29, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pipe redirect[edit]

Just out of curiosity, what exactly is it, and how is it different from a regular redirect? Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:15, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, I'm not sure where I picked that term up. I mean pipe as a verb, and in the plumbing-like janitorial context of updating links to skip redirects. That might not make sense, and well may be an improper use of some tech terms ;) --Peter Talk 06:20, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I'm not actually sure how to create a hard, rather than soft redirect. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:27, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The | key is known as the pipe character. :) --Rschen7754 10:53, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Bypass" is the usual verb used to indicate changing a link to a redirect into a link to the target. It's also usually considered unnecessary and a waste of effort. Creating a hard redirect is simple: #REDIRECT [[target]]. LtPowers (talk) 14:18, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oneonta[edit]

Um, Peter? Why did you delete Oneonta? Are you claiming that the city in Alabama is by far the most famous Oneonta, and if so, why didn't you move that article to the base name? LtPowers (talk) 00:23, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And wouldn't we still need Oneonta (disambiguation) in that case? LtPowers (talk) 00:23, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We would only need a disambiguation if we have more than one article by that name. If we create another article, then maybe it would be worth recreating, but in the meantime letting that term pull up the search result for Oneonta (Alabama) makes sense to me. Even that article is completely empty. --Peter Talk 00:28, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I remember working on the guide to the town by the same name in New York. I assume someone unaccountably deleted it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:31, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Even if my memory is false, there certainly should be a guide to Oneonta, New York. It has a SUNY branch and is a significant town between Binghamton and Albany. I would like to restore the disambig in the meantime. I've never heard of the town in Alabama, for whatever that's worth. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:34, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find any record of such, although it looks like someone recently (Feb 2013) started an article for the town on WT. Like I said, the disambig should be there if there is more than one article. When deleting and recreating to ditch the pointless attribution notice from essentially empty articles, I'm looking to save time, and a disambig page for one article isn't something I'm likely to expend much effort on ;) --Peter Talk 00:37, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know we ever had a Wikipedia-like rule that redlinks didn't count for determining whether dab pages exist or not. LtPowers (talk) 13:03, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Post-script: I started an article on Oneonta (New York) and recreated a disambig. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:01, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good; thanks, Ikan. LtPowers (talk) 22:23, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have such a rule, and I don't think we should have some sort of deletion rule about that. My action was only in the context of the one-time cull of empty legacy pages, with the intent to recreate. But if there isn't any real reason to recreate them (like in the case of a disambig for non-existent articles), I'm inclined to save time by leaving them redlinked, until someone later wants to create them anew for some reason. --Peter Talk 00:44, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I just don't think it's a good idea to leave the base name unoccupied. LtPowers (talk) 12:51, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DC Neighborhoods Map shapefiles[edit]

Hi Peter,

I'm a big fan of GIS and map making and I've been building a map of DC for my recent house search there, but have as of yet been able to find a good shapefile with the DC neighborhoods. The DC.gov page has an assessment neighborhoods shapefile, but it does not contain all of the neighborhoods and also labels some areas with names that aren't the proper neighborhood names; not as residents would recognize them at least.

I noticed your DC neighborhood map on Wikipedia and thought it would work perfectly. So, I thought I would ask to see if you have any shapefiles from your work on creating that map and if I might be able to use them for my mapping project? Thanks in advance for any help.

Unfortunately no, it's all SVG. I believe someone was working on converting it to SHP, but I haven't heard back from him. I will check to see if he has gotten to that. --Peter Talk 02:38, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

your map in new Commons brochure[edit]

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that one of your maps is in the new Wikimedia Commons introductory brochure (as part of a screenshot of the Northeast Washington DC page, on page 7). Thanks for that and all your work on Wikivoyage!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:06, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Report site[edit]

Hi Peter. So bad, that you haven't been here. The presentation was nice and the feedback is great. Everybody seems to like the new sister project. I want to place the report from de: you are waiting for a quite a long time and can not find the page. I really lost the link. Can you provide the link to me again? Thanks -- DerFussi 09:04, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm also sad I couldn't be there. I hope you, James, and Andrea have had a chance to talk to Wikidata and OpenStreetMap folks about the listings database, potential reviews, and dynamic maps integration. I was especially interested in Submissions/How Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap can help us build an alternative to commercial Web 2.0 services, but it looks like that was withdrawn.
The reports are at Meta:Wikivoyage/Summit. I will write a new report hopefully today. --Peter Talk 17:07, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Simple method to give a map of countries one has been too[edit]

Hey Peter is there an easy way to do this? The one on your page seems rather complicated. Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 13:42, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This feature is around the top of my personal wishlist for Wikivoyage. World66 has had a very simple and somewhat ugly map generator to show which countries you have been to, and that is probably the single most popular thing there. How I'd most like to see it done would be to have readers generate a POI map by clicking a button on articles for destinations they have visited (similar to the watchlist icon, it would be "add to your visited destinations"). That would dangle the nice carrot of having your own travel map, while getting readers to explore the site. Along the way they might be enticed to contribute—especially if we lack an article about a place they want on their personal map! I envision it looking something like our ArtMap, except instead of showing all Wikivoyage destination articles, it would only show those that they have added to visited destinations.
Other sites that have this option: Travelblog generates user maps with a CC-by-sa license, but doesn't seem to be working right now. amMap has a nice interface, but no word on the licensing of the generated image. --Peter Talk 20:01, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I remember seeing something on Wikipedia. Agree this would be a good idea. Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:11, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A question in the Tourist Office[edit]

An anonymous person just asked about hotels in a city called National Harbor. Our article has no hotel recommendations but you who are from the area perhaps would know where the person should go searching for a "nice but reasonable hotel": Wikivoyage:Tourist_Office#Hotel_question ϒpsilon (talk) 19:02, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reopened discussion on left-aligned images[edit]

Hi Peter. Just wanted to give you a heads up that I have started trying a third time to resolve this discussion... Texugo (talk) 14:12, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your break[edit]

Hi Peter, I have noticed you are having a break from WV. No matter what your reasons are, I wanted to let you know that you and your hard work will be missed very much. Good luck! --Danapit (talk) 04:25, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Would like to second that. Hope to see you back soon. Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:43, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Me three. You have been sorely missed when you have taken breaks in the past, and I certainly hope this one will not be of a more permanent nature. You are one of WV's best and have helped me immensely over the years... Texugo (talk) 11:31, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Peter, You and your valuable contributions will be missed. Best wishes, hope to see you back in the future. --Saqib (talk) 11:37, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Peter, I too am really sorry to see that you're leaving us, at least temporarily. You're one of the main reasons I stayed around on Wikivoyage for so long in the beginning - you've really helped me out on here. You've done an awful lot of great work on here and I do hope you'll come back again soon. I hope that whatever the reason is for your departure, it's resolved soon. Best wishes, Nick talk
Peter, so strange to see your message just after one from you offering to merge my accounts. Like others, you are the reason I moved to WV. Roundtheworld (talk) 15:17, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
